Nonlinear dynamo in a short Taylor-Couette setup

It is numerically demonstrated by means of a magnetohydrodynamics code that a short Taylor-Couette setup with a body force can sustain dynamo action. The magnetic threshold is comparable to what is usually obtained in spherical geometries. The linear dynamo is characterized by a rotating equatorial dipole. The nonlinear regime is characterized by fluctuating kinetic and magnetic energies and a tilted dipole whose axial component exhibits aperiodic reversals during the time evolution. These numerical evidences of dynamo action in a short Taylor-Couette setup may be useful for developing an experimental device.

Kinematic dynamo simulations of von Kármán flows: application to the VKS experiment

The VKS experiment has evidenced dynamo action in a highly turbulent liquid sodium von Kármán flow [R. Monchaux et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 044502 (2007)]. However, the existence and the onset of a dynamo happen to depend on the exact experimental configuration. By performing kinematic dynamo simulations on real flows, we study their influence on dynamo action, in particular the sense of rotation and the presence of an annulus in the shear layer plane. The 3 components of the mean velocity fields are measured in a water prototype for different VKS configurations through Stereoscopic Particle Imaging Velocimetry. Experimental data are then processed in order to use them in a periodic cylindrical kinematic code. Even if the kinematic predicted mode appears to be different from the experimental saturated one, the results concerning the existence of a dynamo and the thresholds are in qualitative agreement, showing the importance of the flow characteristics.

Coronal Inflows and Giant Polar Plumes

We present the first results of simulations of giant polar plumes and coronal flows. We use a 2.5D axisymmetric MHD numerical model of an isothermal corona and slow solar wind. A plume is generated just above asmall magnetic bipole embedded in an unipolar flux region which is perturbed by Alfvén waves injected from the coronal base. The boundary conditions are transparent. The results are compared to those obtained previously with a 1D wind model in which plumes are generated as a consequence of variations of the heating and flux-tube expansion parameters.

Generation of axisymmetric modes in cylindrical kinematic mean-field dynamos of VKS type

In an attempt to understand why the dominating magnetic field observed in the von-Kármán-Sodium (VKS) dynamo experiment is axisymmetric, we investigate in the present paper the ability of mean field models to generate axisymmetric eigenmodes in cylindrical geometries. An $α$-effect is added to the induction equation and we identify reasonable and necessary properties of the $α$ distribution so that axisymmetric eigenmodes are generated. The parametric study is done with two different simulation codes. We find that simple distributions of $α$-effect, either concentrated in the disk neighbourhood or occupying the bulk of the flow, require unrealistically large values of the parameter $α$ to explain the VKS observations.

Numerical study of homogeneous dynamo based on experimental von Karman type flows

A numerical study of the magnetic induction equation has been performed on von Karman type flows. These flows are generated by two co-axial counter-rotating propellers in cylindrical containers. Such devices are currently used in the von Karman sodium (VKS) experiment designed to study dynamo action in an unconstrained flow. The mean velocity fields have been measured for different configurations and are introduced in a periodic cylindrical kinematic dynamo code. Depending on the driving configuration, on the poloidal to toroidal flow ratio and on the conductivity of boundaries, some flows are observed to sustain growing magnetic fields for magnetic Reynolds numbers accessible to a sodium experiment. The response of the flow to an external magnetic field has also been studied: The results are in excellent agreement with experimental results in the single propeller case but can differ in the two propellers case.
