High-Quality Planar high-Tc Josephson Junctions

Reproducible high-Tc Josephson junctions have been made in a rather simple two-step process using ion irradiation. A microbridge (1 to 5 ?m wide) is firstly designed by ion irradiating a c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7-? film through a gold mask such as the non-protected part becomes insulating. A lower Tc part is then defined within the bridge by irradiating with a much lower fluence through a narrow slit (20 nm) opened in a standard electronic photoresist. These planar junctions, whose settings can be finely tuned, exhibit reproducible and nearly ideal Josephson characteristics. This process can be used to produce complex Josephson circuits.

Extended paraconductivity regime in underdoped cuprates

We reconsider transport experiments in strongly anisotropic superconducting cuprates and we find that universal Aslamazov-Larkin (AL) paraconductivity in two dimensions is surprisingly robust even in the underdoped regime below the pseudogap crossover temperature T^*. We also establish that the underlying normal state resistivity in the pseudogap phase is (almost) linear in temperature, with all the deviations being quantitatively accounted by AL paraconductivity. The disappearence of paraconductivity is governed by the disappearence of gaussian pair fluctuations at an energy scale related to T^*.

Observation of spin-bottleneck due to spin-charge separation in a superconductor

An experimental device was designed to measure the effect of the injection of spin-polarized carriers on the superconductive gap and density-of-states (DOS). Quasiparticles were injected from a ferromagnet ($Ni_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}$) through a tunnel junction into a conventional superconductor (Nb), while charge neutrality was maintained by a supercurrent. The DOS of the superconductor was measured through a second tunnel junction with a normal paramagnetic metal. No significant decrease of the superconductive gap was observed while a noticeable heating of the quasiparticles of the superconductor was measured. A similar experiment performed with current injected from a paramagnet (Al or Ag) showed no heating of quasiparticles. These observations are consistent with spin-charge separation of Bogoliubov quasi-particles and spin-bottleneck due to the enhanced recombination time of pure spin-excitations.

Feromagnetic "$π$"-junctions

We investigate Josephson coupling through a ferromagnetic thin film using Superconductor-Insulator-Ferromagnet-Superconductor planar junctions. Damped oscillations of the critical current are observed as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thickness. We show that they result from the exchange energy gained or lost by a quasiparticle Andreev-reflected at the ferromagnet-superconductor interface. The critical current cancels out at the transition from positive ("0") to negative ("$π$") coupling, in agreement with theoretical calculations.

Conductivity of underdoped YBa2Cu3O7-d : evidence for incoherent pair correlations in the pseudogap regime

Conductivity due to superconducting fluctuations studied in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-d films displays a stronger decay law in temperature than explainable by theory. A formula is proposed, which fits the data very well with two superconductive parameters, Tc and the coherence length ksi_c0, and an energy scale Delta*. This is also valid in underdoped materials and enables to describe the conductivity up to 300 K with a single-particle excitations channel in parallel with a channel whose contribution is controlled by ksi_c0, Tc and Delta*. This allows to address the nature of the pseudogap in favour of incoherent pairing.

Oscillations of the superconducting order parameter in a ferromagnet

Planar tunneling spectroscopy reveals damped oscillations of the superconducting order parameter induced into a ferromagnetic thin film by the proximity effect. The oscillations are due to the finite momentum transfer provided to Cooper pairs by the splitting of the spin up and down bands in the ferromagnet. As a consequence, for negative values of the superconducting order parameter the tunneling spectra are capsized ("$π$-state"). The oscillations' damping and period are set by the same length scale, which depends on the spin polarization.

Andreev Bound States and Josephson Coupling in YBCO/Pb tunnel junction

We have made in-situ [103] and [110]YBCO/Pb junctions, which display an hysteretic behaviour with both a well-defined Quasi-Particule branch and a Josephson current. A zero energy conductance peak is observed in the tunneling conductance which is a signature of Andreev Bound States (ABS) at a surface of a d-wave superconductor. The observed splitting of this peak at low temperature may confirm the existence of a surface state which breaks time-reversal symmetry. However, up to now, we have not seen any evidence of a coupling between Josephson current and the zero-energy ABS, predicted by Y. Tanaka and S. Kashiwaya (PRB 56 p.892).

Enhancement of Andreev reflection by spin polarization in out-of-equilibrium ferromagnet-superconductor junctions

We report on transport measurements on Nb/Al/Gd/Al/Nb junctions.Bulk Gadolinium is a weakly polarized ferromagnet (5-7%), and is present in the junction in granular form (superparamagnet). We show that Andreev reflection is strongly enhanced by a weak polarization, obtained by applying an external magnetic field. A new model is proposed that accounts for this effect. The transport is described in terms of ``hot'' carriers that experience Zeeman splitting due to the spin polarized background. The Landauer formula is $G=(4e^2)/h A(h_b)$, $h_b$ being the exchange field at the grain boundary, and A(E) the Andreev current coefficient, that increases with E for resistive junctions.
