Evidence of a new narrow resonance decaying to $χ_{c1}γ$ in $B \to χ_{c1} γK$

We report measurements of $B \to χ_{c1} γK$ and $χ_{c2} γK$ decays using $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. Evidence of a new resonance in the $χ_{c1} γ$ final state is found with a statistical significance of $3.8 σ$. This state has a mass of $3823.1 \pm 1.8 {(stat)} \pm 0.7 {(syst)}$ MeV/$c^2$, a value that is consistent with theoretical expectations for the previously unseen $1^3 D_2$ $c\bar{c}$ meson. We find no other narrow resonance and set upper limits on the branching fractions of the $X(3872) \to χ_{c1} γ$ and $χ_{c2} γ$ decays.

Precise measurement of the branching fractions for Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- and first measurement of the Ds*+ Ds*- polarization using e+e- collisions

We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- decays using 121.4 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The results are B(Bs0->Ds+ Ds-) = (0.58 +0.11 -0.09 +-0.13)%, B(Bs0->Ds*+- Ds-+) = (1.8 +-0.2 +-0.4)%, and B(Bs0->Ds*+ Ds*-) = (2.0 +-0.3 +-0.5)%; the sum is B(Bs0->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- = (4.3 +-0.4 +-1.0)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction constrains the ratio Delta(Gamma_s)/cos(phi_s), where Delta(Gamma_s) is the difference in widths between the two Bs0-Bs0bar mass eigenstates, and phi_s is the CP-violating phase in Bs0-Bs0bar mixing. For phi_s=0 we obtain Delta(Gamma_s)/Gamma_s = 0.090 +-0.009 (stat.) +-0.023 (syst.), where Gamma_s is the mean decay width. We also measure for the first time the longitudinal polarization fraction of Bs->Ds*+ Ds*-; the result is 0.12 +0.30 -0.28 +0.04 -0.05.

Measurement of exclusive $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays into Vector-Pseudoscalar final states

Using samples of 102 million $Υ(1S)$ and 158 million $Υ(2S)$ events collected with the Belle detector, we study exclusive hadronic decays of these two bottomonium resonances to $\ks K^+ π^-$ and charge-conjugate (c.c.) states, $π^+ π^- π^0 π^0$, and $π^+ π^- π^0$, and to the two-body Vector-Pseudoscalar ($K^{\ast}(892)^0\bar{K}^0+ {\rm c.c.}$, $K^{\ast}(892)^-K^+ + {\rm c.c.}$, $ωπ^0$, and $ρπ$) final states. For the first time, signals are observed in the modes $Υ(1S) \to \ks K^+ π^- + {\rm c.c.}$, $π^+ π^- π^0 π^0$, and $Υ(2S) \to π^+ π^- π^0 π^0$, and evidence is found for the modes $Υ(1S)\to π^+ π^- π^0$, $K^{\ast}(892)^0 \bar{K}^0+ {\rm c.c.}$, and $Υ(2S) \to \ks K^+ π^- + {\rm c.c.}$ Branching fractions are measured for all the processes, while 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions are also set for the modes with a statistical significance of less than $3σ$. The ratios of the branching fractions of $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ decays into the same final state are used to test a perturbative QCD prediction for OZI-suppressed bottomonium decays.

Relativistic description of magnetic moments in nuclei with doubly closed shells plus or minus one nucleon

Using the relativistic point-coupling model with density functional PC-PK1, the magnetic moments of the nuclei $^{207}$Pb, $^{209}$Pb, $^{207}$Tl and $^{209}$Bi with a $jj$ closed-shell core $^{208}$Pb are studied on the basis of relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. The corresponding time-odd fields, the one-pion exchange currents, and the first- and second-order corrections are taken into account. The present relativistic results reproduce the data well. The relative deviation between theory and experiment for these four nuclei is 6.1% for the relativistic calculations and somewhat smaller than the value of 13.2% found in earlier non-relativistic investigations. It turns out that the $π$ meson is important for the description of magnetic moments, first by means of one-pion exchange currents and second by the residual interaction provided by the $π$ exchange.

Hydrogen lines in LAMOST low resolution spectra of RR Lyrae stars

The LAMOST spectroscopic survey for Galactic structure and evolution has been in operation since October 2012, following a one-year pilot survey. The pilot survey produced a data release containing over 600,000 stellar spectra. By cross-checking with a large time series photometric database of RR Lyrae stars in high Galactic latitude regions, we found a total number of 157 stars that have been observed with LAMOST. In this sample, we successfully captured three RR Lyrae stars in the fast expansion phase, all of them showing significant hypersonic shock wave features in the spectra. By fitting the Hα line shape, we determine that the emission features seen within the broader Hα absorption line suggest hypersonic relative motions in the atmospheres of these three objects. With a further LAMOST survey of millions of stars, we will capture a large sample of RR Lyrae stars in their hypersonic expansion phase, and therefore provide a large database for the study of the internal structure and pulsation mechanism of RR Lyrae stars.

Study of Exclusive B->X_u l nu Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| using Full Reconstruction Tagging at the Belle Experiment

We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

Evidence for the decay B0 --> K+K-pi0

We report a search for charmless hadronic decays of neutral B mesons to the final state K+K-pi0. The results are based on a 711 fb^-1 data sample that contains 772x10^6 BB-bar pairs, and was collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find the first evidence for this decay with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations and measure its branching fraction as BF(B0 --> K+K-pi0) = [2.17 +/- 0.60(stat) +/- 0.24 (syst)]x10^-6.

Longitudinal Schottky spectra of a bunched Ne10+ ion beam at the CSRe

The longitudinal Schottky spectra of a radio-frequency (RF) bunched and electron cooled 22Ne10+ ion beam at 70 MeV/u have been studied by a newly installed resonant Schottky pick-up at the experimental cooler storage ring (CSRe), at IMP. For an RF-bunched ion beam, a longitudinal momentum spread of has been reached with less than 107 stored ions. The reduction of momentum spread compared with coasting ion beam was observed from Schottky noise signal of the bunched ion beam. In order to prepare the future laser cooling experiment at the CSRe, the RF-bunching power was modulated at 25th, 50th and 75th harmonic of the revolution frequency, effective bunching amplitudes were extracted from the Schottky spectrum analysis. Applications of Schottky noise for measuring beam lifetime with ultra-low intensity of ion beams are presented, and it is relevant to upcoming experiments on laser cooling of relativistic heavy ion beams and nuclear physics at the CSRe.

Hot-spot formation in stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8

We have studied experimentally and numerically temperature profiles and the formation of hot spots in intrinsic Josephson junction stacks in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO). The superconducting stacks are biased in a state where all junctions are resistive. The formation of hot spots in this system is shown to arise mainly from the strongly negative temperature coefficient of the c-axis resistivity of BSCCO at low temperatures. This leads to situations where the maximum temperature in the hot spot can be below or above the superconducting transition temperature Tc. The numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

Study of $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ and Observation of a Charged Charmonium-like State at Belle

The cross section for $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ between 3.8 GeV and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the $Υ(nS)$ ($n = 1,\ 2,\ ...,\ 5$) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of $π^+ π^- J/ψ$ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parameterization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of $Y(4260) \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ decays, a structure is observed in the $M(π^\pm\jpsi)$ mass spectrum with $5.2σ$ significance, with mass $M=(3894.5\pm 6.6\pm 4.5) {\rm MeV}/c^2$ and width $Γ=(63\pm 24\pm 26)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. This structure can be interpreted as a new charged charmonium-like state.

Knot Visualization Experiments for Verifiable Molecular Movies

Classical topological concepts are applied to understand high performance computing simulations of molecules writhing in three dimensional space. These simulations produce peta-bytes of floating point data, to describe 3 dimensional changes in molecular structure. A zero-th order analysis is achieved by viewing a computer animation synchronized with these changes. The performance demands for animation of this voluminous data can become problematic, but techniques from low-dimensional topology are helpful. The 3D molecule is reduced to a lower dimensional model of a 1-manifold, which undergoes a piecewise linear approximation for animation. An example is presented here to show how a 1-manifold and its PL approximation could come to have different embeddings as molecular writhing proceeds. This should serve as a cautionary warning to animators to respect established sufficient conditions for topological preservation so that the movies generated will faithfully reflect the topology of the underlying model. To obtain this result, techniques from low-dimensional topology were joined with experimental mathematics and numerical analyses.

Evidence for B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar with a Hadronic Tagging Method Using the Full Data Sample of Belle

We measure the branching fraction of B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar using the full Upsilon(4S) data sample containing 772*10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Events with BBbar pairs are tagged by reconstructing one of the B mesons decaying into hadronic final states, and B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar candidates are detected in the recoil. We find evidence for B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar with a significance of 3.0 standard deviations including systematic errors and measure a branching fraction B(B- -> tau- nu_tau-bar) = [0.72^{+0.27}_{-0.25}(stat) +/- 0.11(syst)] * 10^-4.

Isotopic Convergence Theorem

When approximating a space curve, it is natural to consider whether the knot type of the original curve is preserved in the approximant. This preservation is of strong contemporary interest in computer graphics and visualization. We establish a criterion to preserve knot type under approximation that relies upon pointwise convergence and convergence in total curvature.

Magnetization and spin dynamics of the spin S=1/2 hourglass nanomagnet Cu5(OH)2(NIPA)4*10H2O

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the spin S=1/2 nanomagnet Cu5(OH)2(NIPA)4*10H2O (Cu5-NIPA). Using thermodynamic, electron spin resonance and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on one hand, and ab initio density-functional band-structure calculations, exact diagonalizations and a strong coupling theory on the other, we derive a microscopic magnetic model of Cu5-NIPA and characterize the spin dynamics of this system. The elementary five-fold Cu2+ unit features an hourglass structure of two corner-sharing scalene triangles related by inversion symmetry. Our microscopic Heisenberg model comprises one ferromagnetic and two antiferromagnetic exchange couplings in each triangle, stabilizing a single spin S=1/2 doublet ground state (GS), with an exactly vanishing zero-field splitting (by Kramer's theorem), and a very large excitation gap of Δ~68 K. Thus, Cu5-NIPA is a good candidate for achieving long electronic spin relaxation (T1) and coherence (T2) times at low temperatures, in analogy to other nanomagnets with low-spin GS's. Of particular interest is the strongly inhomogeneous distribution of the GS magnetic moment over the five Cu2+ spins. This is a purely quantum-mechanical effect since, despite the non-frustrated nature of the magnetic couplings, the GS is far from the classical collinear ferrimagnetic configuration. Finally, Cu5-NIPA is a rare example of a S=1/2 nanomagnet showing an enhancement in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 at intermediate temperatures.

Anomalous Raman Spectra and Thickness Dependent Electronic properties of WSe2

Typical Raman spectra of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) display two prominent peaks, E2g and A1g, that are well separated from each other. We find that these modes are degenerate in bulk WSe2 yielding one single Raman peak. As the dimensionality is lowered, the observed peak splits in two as a result of broken degeneracy. In contrast to our experimental findings, our phonon dispersion calculations reveal that these modes remain degenerate independent of the number of layers. Interestingly, for minuscule biaxial strain the degeneracy is preserved but once the crystal symmetry is broken by uniaxial strain, the degeneracy is lifted. Our calculated phonon dispersion for uniaxially strained WSe2 shows a perfect match to the measured Raman spectrum which suggests that uniaxial strain exists in WSe2 flakes possibly induced during the sample preparation and/or as a result of interaction between WSe2 and the substrate. Furthermore, we find that WSe2 undergoes an indirect to direct bandgap transition from bulk to monolayers which is ubiquitous for semiconducting TMDs. These results not only allow us to understand the vibrational properties of WSe2 but also provides detailed insight to their physical properties.

The last three outbursts of H 1743-322 observed by RXTE in its latest service phase

After 2010, three outbursts of H 1743-322 were detected by RXTE. We have carried out timing and spectral analysis of the data, emphasizing on the two with relatively complete evolution history presented in the RXTE/PCA observations. We then constitute an enlarged outburst sample for H 1743-322 which allows to investigate the spectral transitions in more details. We find that the spectral transitions to high-soft state constrain a region for four outbursts in hardness-intensity diagram. An extension of the region locates in the vicinity of the failed outburst in 2008, and excludes it from a successful group. We therefore suggest the failed outburst in 2008 may present the first almost successful outburst sample, which is important for modelling the outburst, especially upon the conditions required for transition to high-soft state.

Measurement of Branching Fraction and First Evidence of CP Violation in B0 --> a1+-(1260) pi-+ Decays

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent CP violation parameters in B0 --> a_1^+-(1260) pi^-+ decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772x10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We also measure an upper limit on the product branching fraction for a possible decay with the same final state B0 --> a_2^+-(1320) pi^-+. In a time-dependent measurement to extract CP asymmetries, we find evidence of mixing-induced CP violation in B0 --> a_1^+-(1260) pi^-+ decays with a 3.1 sigma significance and the rate where the a_1^+-(1260) does not contain the spectator quark is found to dominate the rate where it does at the 4.1 sigma level. However, there is no evidence for either time and flavor integrated direct CP violation or flavor-dependent direct CP violation.

Precise measurement of the CP violation parameter sin2phi_1 in B0-->(c\bar c)K0 decays

We present a precise measurement of the CP violation parameter sin2phi_1 and the direct CP violation parameter A_f using the final data sample of 772x10^6 B\bar B pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. One neutral B meson is reconstructed in a J/psi K0S, psi(2S) K0S, chi_c1 K0S or J/psi K0L CP-eigenstate and its flavor is identified from the decay products of the accompanying B meson. From the distribution of proper time intervals between the two B decays, we obtain the following CP violation parameters: sin2phi_1=0.667+-0.023(stat)+-0.012(syst) and A_f=0.006+-0.016(stat)+-0.012(syst).
