First Measurement of Inclusive B -> X_s eta Decays

We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0 (stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the range M_{X_s} > 1.8 GeV/c^2.

The Herschel-SPIRE instrument and its in-flight performance

The Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE), is the Herschel Space Observatory`s submillimetre camera and spectrometer. It contains a three-band imaging photometer operating at 250, 350 and 500 microns, and an imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) which covers simultaneously its whole operating range of 194-671 microns (447-1550 GHz). The SPIRE detectors are arrays of feedhorn-coupled bolometers cooled to 0.3 K. The photometer has a field of view of 4' x 8', observed simultaneously in the three spectral bands. Its main operating mode is scan-mapping, whereby the field of view is scanned across the sky to achieve full spatial sampling and to cover large areas if desired. The spectrometer has an approximately circular field of view with a diameter of 2.6'. The spectral resolution can be adjusted between 1.2 and 25 GHz by changing the stroke length of the FTS scan mirror. Its main operating mode involves a fixed telescope pointing with multiple scans of the FTS mirror to acquire spectral data. For extended source measurements, multiple position offsets are implemented by means of an internal beam steering mirror to achieve the desired spatial sampling and by rastering of the telescope pointing to map areas larger than the field of view. The SPIRE instrument consists of a cold focal plane unit located inside the Herschel cryostat and warm electronics units, located on the spacecraft Service Module, for instrument control and data handling. Science data are transmitted to Earth with no on-board data compression, and processed by automatic pipelines to produce calibrated science products. The in-flight performance of the instrument matches or exceeds predictions based on pre-launch testing and modelling: the photometer sensitivity is comparable to or slightly better than estimated pre-launch, and the spectrometer sensitivity is also better by a factor of 1.5-2.

The Herschel first look at protostars in the Aquila Rift

As part of the science demonstration phase of the Herschel mission of the Gould Belt Key Program, the Aquila Rift molecular complex has been observed. The complete ~ 3.3deg x 3.3deg imaging with SPIRE 250/350/500 micron and PACS 70/160 micron allows a deep investigation of embedded protostellar phases, probing of the dust emission from warm inner regions at 70 and 160 micron to the bulk of the cold envelopes between 250 and 500 micron. We used a systematic detection technique operating simultaneously on all Herschel bands to build a sample of protostars. Spectral energy distributions are derived to measure luminosities and envelope masses, and to place the protostars in an M_env - L_bol evolutionary diagram. The spatial distribution of protostars indicates three star-forming sites in Aquila, with W40/Sh2-64 HII region by far the richest. Most of the detected protostars are newly discovered. For a reduced area around the Serpens South cluster, we could compare the Herschel census of protostars with Spitzer results. The Herschel protostars are younger than in Spitzer with 7 Class 0 YSOs newly revealed by Herschel. For the entire Aquila field, we find a total of ~ 45-60 Class 0 YSOs discovered by Herschel. This confirms the global statistics of several hundred Class~0 YSOs that should be found in the whole Gould Belt survey.

On the (non)rigidity of the Frobenius Endomorphism over Gorenstein Rings

It is well-known that for a large class of local rings of positive characteristic, including complete intersection rings, the Frobenius endomorphism can be used as a test for finite projective dimension. In this paper, we exploit this property to study the structure of such rings. One of our results states that the Picard group of the punctured spectrum of such a ring $R$ cannot have $p$-torsion. When $R$ is a local complete intersection, this recovers (with a purely local algebra proof) an analogous statement for complete intersections in projective spaces first given in SGA and also a special case of a conjecture by Gabber. Our method also leads to many simply constructed examples where rigidity for the Frobenius endomorphism does not hold, even when the rings are Gorenstein with isolated singularity. This is in stark contrast to the situation for complete intersection rings. Also, a related length criterion for modules of finite length and finite projective dimension is discussed towards the end.

Non-monotonic variation of anomalous Hall effect with spin orbit coupling strength

For L1(0) FePt films, the anomalous Hall resistivity is found to be proportional to spontaneous magnetization $M_{\mathrm{S}}$. After the $M_{\mathrm{S}}$ temperature effect is eliminated, $ρ_{\mathrm{xyo}}$ can be fitted by $ρ_{\mathrm{xyo}}=a_{\mathrm{o}}ρ_{\mathrm{xx}}+ b_{\mathrm{o}}ρ_{\mathrm{xx}}^{\mathrm{2}}$. $a_{\mathrm{o}}$ and $b_{\mathrm{o}}$ change non-monotonically with chemical long range ordering degree $S$. Accordingly, it is indicated that for L1(0) FePt films the spin orbit coupling strength increases monotonically with increasing $S$.

Construction and Commissioning of the CALICE Analog Hadron Calorimeter Prototype

An analog hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) prototype of 5.3 nuclear interaction lengths thickness has been constructed by members of the CALICE Collaboration. The AHCAL prototype consists of a 38-layer sandwich structure of steel plates and highly-segmented scintillator tiles that are read out by wavelength-shifting fibers coupled to SiPMs. The signal is amplified and shaped with a custom-designed ASIC. A calibration/monitoring system based on LED light was developed to monitor the SiPM gain and to measure the full SiPM response curve in order to correct for non-linearity. Ultimately, the physics goals are the study of hadron shower shapes and testing the concept of particle flow. The technical goal consists of measuring the performance and reliability of 7608 SiPMs. The AHCAL was commissioned in test beams at DESY and CERN. The entire prototype was completed in 2007 and recorded hadron showers, electron showers and muons at different energies and incident angles in test beams at CERN and Fermilab.

Comparing artificial frustrated magnets: tuning symmetry in nanomagnet arrays

We study the impact of geometry on magnetostatically frustrated single-domain nanomagnet arrays. We examine square and hexagonal lattice arrays, as well as a brickwork geometry that combines the anisotropy of the square lattice and the topology of the hexagonal lattice. We find that the more highly frustrated hexagonal lattice allows for the most thorough minimization of the magnetostatic energy, and that the pair-wise correlations between moments differ qualitatively between hexagonal and brickwork lattices, although they share the same lattice topology. The results indicate that the symmetry of local interaction is more important than overall lattice topology in the accommodation of frustrated interactions.

Module Structure on Lie Powers and Natural Coalgebra-Split Sub Hopf Algebras of Tensor Algebras

In this article, we investigate the functors from modules to modules that occur as the summands of tensor powers and the functors from modules to Hopf algebras that occur as natural coalgebra summands of tensor algebras. The main results provide some explicit natural coalgebra summands of tensor algebras. As a consequence, we obtain some decompositions of Lie powers over the general linear groups.

Optical Observations of the Rapidly Expanding Type Ia Supernova 2007gi

We present optical photometry and spectra for the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2007gi in the nearby galaxy NGC 4036. SN 2007gi is characterized by extremely high-velocity (HV) features of the intermediate-mass elements (Si, Ca, and S), with expansion velocities ($v_{\rm exp}$) approaching $\sim$15,500 km s$^{-1}$ near maximum brightness (compared to $\sim$10,600 km s$^{-1}$ for SNe Ia with normal $v_{\rm exp}$). SN 2007gi reached a $B$-band peak magnitude of 13.25$\pm$0.04 mag with a decline rate of $Δm_{15}(B)$(true) = 1.33$\pm$0.09 mag. The $B$-band light curve of SN 2007gi demonstrated an interesting two-stage evolution during the nebular phase, with a decay rate of 1.16$\pm$0.05 mag (100 days)$^{-1}$ during $t = 60$--90 days and 1.61$\pm0.04$ mag (100 days)$^{-1}$ thereafter. Such a behavior was also observed in the HV SN Ia 2006X, and might be caused by the interaction between supernova ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM) around HV SNe Ia. Based on a sample of a dozen well-observed $R$-band (or unfiltered) light curves of SNe Ia, we confirm that the HV events may have a faster rise time to maximum than the ones with normal $v_{\rm exp}$.

Determination of the magnetic structure of Yb3Pt4: a k=0 local-moment antiferromagnet

We have used neutron diffraction measurements to study the zero-field magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound Yb3Pt4, which was earlier found to order antiferromagnetically at the Neel temperature TN=2.4 K, and displays a field-driven quantum critical point at 1.6 T. In Yb3Pt4, the Yb moments sit on a single low-symmetry site in the rhombohedral lattice with space group R-3. The Yb ions form octahedra with edges that are twisted with respect to the hexagonal unit cell, a twisting that results in every Yb ion having exactly one Yb nearest neighbor. Below TN, we found new diffracted intensity due to a k=0 magnetic structure. This magnetic structure was compared to all symmetry-allowed magnetic structures, and was subsequently refined. The best fitting magnetic structure model is antiferromagnetic, and involves pairs of Yb nearest neighbors on which the moments point almost exactly towards each other. This structure has moment components within the ab-plane as well as parallel to the c-axis, although the easy magnetization direction lies in the ab-plane. Our magnetization results suggest that besides the crystal-electric field anisotropy, anisotropic exchange favoring alignment along the c-axis is responsible for the overall direction of the ordered moments. The magnitude of the ordered Yb moments in Yb3Pt4 is 0.81 uB/Yb at 1.4 K. The analysis of the bulk properties, the size of the ordered moment, and the observation of well-defined crystal-field levels argue that the Yb moments are spatially localized in zero field.

Fractal pattern formation at elastic-plastic transition in heterogeneous materials

Fractal patterns are observed in computational mechanics of elastic-plastic transitions in two models of linear elastic/perfectly-plastic random heterogeneous materials: (1) a composite made of locally isotropic grains with weak random fluctuations in elastic moduli and/or yield limits; and (2) a polycrystal made of randomly oriented anisotropic grains. In each case, the spatial assignment of material randomness is a non-fractal, strict-white-noise field on a 256 x 256 square lattice of homogeneous, square-shaped grains; the flow rule in each grain follows associated plasticity. These lattices are subjected to simple shear loading increasing through either one of three macroscopically uniform boundary conditions (kinematic, mixed-orthogonal or traction), admitted by the Hill-Mandel condition. Upon following the evolution of a set of grains that become plastic, we find that it has a fractal dimension increasing from 0 towards 2 as the material transitions from elastic to perfectly-plastic. While the grains possess sharp elastic-plastic stress-strain curves, the overall stress-strain responses are smooth and asymptote toward perfectly-plastic flows; these responses and the fractal dimension-strain curves are almost identical for three different loadings. The randomness in elastic moduli alone is sufficient to generate fractal patterns at the transition, but has a weaker effect than the randomness in yield limits. In the model with isotropic grains, as the random fluctuations vanish (i.e. the composite becomes a homogeneous body), a sharp elastic-plastic transition is recovered.

Decay of entanglement in coupled, driven systems with bipartite decoherence

We analyze a system of two qubits embedded in two different environments. The qubits are coupled to each other and driven on-resonance by two external classical sources. In the secular limit, we obtain exact analytical results for the evolution of the system for several classes of two-qubit mixed initial states. For Werner states we show that the decay of entanglement does not depend on coupling. For other initial states with ``{\sf X}\rq\rq -type density matrices we find that the sudden death time displays a rich dependence on the coupling energy and state parameters due to the existence of processes of delayed sudden birth of entanglement.

Anomalous magneto-optical Kerr effect in perpendicularly magnetized Co/Pt films on two-dimensional colloidal crystals

We have studied the magneto-optical Kerr effect and optical reflectance of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt films on self-assembly two-dimensional polystyrene spheres. It is shown that the magneto-optical and the reflectance spectra are correlated to each other. Calculations have shown that the magneto-optical Kerr rotation and the Kerr ellipticity spectra are governed by the resonant coupling of light to the excitations of surface plasmon polaritons and modified by the sphere diameters. These effects lead to the possibility of developing new magnetoplasmonic nanosensors.

Anomalous spin-waves and the commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition in LiNiPO4

Detailed spin-wave spectra of magneto-electric LiNiPO4 have been measured by neutron scattering at low temperatures in the commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic (AF) phase with ordering temperature 20.8 K. An anomalous low-energy mode is observed at the modulation vector of the incommensurate (IC) AF phase appearing above the 20.8 K. A linear spin-wave model based on Heisenberg exchange couplings and single ion anisotropies accounts for all the observed spin-wave dispersions and intensities. Along the b axis an unusually strong next-nearest-neighbor AF coupling competes with the dominant nearest-neighbor AF exchange interaction and causes the IC structure.

Field-induced magnetic phases and electric polarization in LiNiPO4

Neutron diffraction is used to probe the (H,T) phase diagram of magneto-electric (ME) LiNiPO4 for magnetic fields along the c-axis. At zero field the Ni spins order in two antiferromagnetic phases. One has commensurate (C) structures and general ordering vectors (0,0,0), the other one is incommensurate (IC) with ordering vector (0,q,0). At low temperatures the C order collapses above 12 Tesla and adopts an IC structure with modulation vector parallel to (0,q,0). We show that C order is required for the ME effect and establish how electric polarization results from a field-induced reduction of the total magneto-elastic energy.

Effects of parallel ion motion on zonal flow generation in ion-temperature-gradient mode turbulence

The role of parallel ion motion for zonal flow generation in ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) mode turbulence is investigated with focus on the effects of acoustic modes and toroidicity on the zonal flow. One possible reason for the weak suppression of ITG turbulence by zonal flows found in experiments in the Columbia Linear Machine (CLM) [Phys. Plasmas {\bf 13} 055905 (2006)] might be due to the small toroidicity ($ε_n = 2L_n/R$) in the experiment. The zonal flow is often directly dependent on the ITG mode and the coupling of zonal flow to acoustic modes and hence is directly affected by any change of the relevant parameters. The model consists of the continuity, temperature and parallel ion momentum equations for the ITG turbulence. The zonal flow time evolution is described by a Hasegawa-Mima like equation and a fifth order zonal flow dispersion relation is derived. The results are interpreted in terms of quality of zonal flows, i.e., the ratio of growth rate and real frequency ($Q = Ω^{IM}/Ω^{RE}$). It is found that the quality of the zonal flow rapidly decreases with decreasing toroidicity.

Magnetic Order of the Iron Spins in NdOFeAs

Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction measurements have been carried out to investigate the iron magnetic order in undoped NdOFeAs. Antiferromagnetic order is observed below 141(6) K, which is in close proximity to the structural distortion observed in this material. The magnetic structure consists of chains of parallel spins that are arranged antiparallel between chains, which is the same in-plane spin arrangement as observed in all the other iron oxypnictide materials. Nearest-neighbor spins along the c-axis are antiparallel like LaOFeAs. The ordered moment is 0.25(7) muB, which is the smallest moment found so far in these systems.

Energy minimization and AC demagnetization in a nanomagnet array

We study AC demagnetization in frustrated arrays of single-domain ferromagnetic islands, exhaustively resolving every (Ising-like) magnetic degree of freedom in the systems. Although the net moment of the arrays is brought near zero by a protocol with sufficiently small step size, the final magnetostatic energy of the demagnetized array continues to decrease for finer-stepped protocols and does not extrapolate to the ground state energy. The resulting complex disordered magnetic state can be described by a maximum-entropy ensemble constrained to satisfy just nearest-neighbor correlations.
