Ultracold molecules for measuring the electron's electric dipole moment

We demonstrate one-dimensional sub-Doppler laser cooling of a beam of YbF molecules to 100 $μ$K. This is a key step towards a measurement of the electron's electric dipole moment using ultracold molecules. We compare the effectiveness of magnetically-assisted and polarization-gradient sub-Doppler cooling mechanisms. We model the experiment and find good agreement with our data.

Anomalous Pressure Dependence of magnetic Ordering Temperature in Tb to 141 GPa: Comparison with Gd and Dy

In previous studies the pressure dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\text{o}}$ of Dy was found to exhibit a sharp increase above its volume collapse pressure of 73 GPa, appearing to reach temperatures well above ambient at 157 GPa. In a search for a second such lanthanide, electrical resistivity measurements were carried out on neighboring Tb to 141 GPa over the temperature range 3.8 - 295 K. Below Tb's volume collapse pressure of 53 GPa, the pressure dependence $T_{\text{o}}(P)$ mirrors that of both Dy and Gd. However, at higher pressures $T_{\text{o}}(P)$ for Tb becomes highly anomalous. This result, together with the very strong suppression of superconductivity by dilute Tb ions in Y, suggests that extreme pressure transports Tb into an unconventional magnetic state with an anomalously high magnetic ordering temperature.

Electronic and structural ground state of heavy alkali metals at high pressure

Alkali metals display unexpected properties at high pressure, including emergence of low symmetry crystal structures, that appear to occur due to enhanced electronic correlations among the otherwise nearly-free conduction electrons. We investigate the high pressure electronic and structural ground state of K, Rb, and Cs using x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction measurements together with ab initio theoretical calculations. The sequence of phase transitions under pressure observed at low temperature is similar in all three heavy alkalis except for the absence of the oC84 phase in Cs. Both the experimental and theoretical results point to pressure-enhanced localization of the valence electrons characterized by pseudo-gap formation near the Fermi level and strong spd hybridization. Although the crystal structures predicted to host magnetic order in K are not observed, the localization process appears to drive these alkalis closer to a strongly correlated electron state.

Free Form Lensing Implications for the Collision of Dark Matter and Gas in the Frontier Fields Cluster MACSJ0416.1-2403

We present a free form mass reconstruction of the massive lensing cluster MACSJ0416.1-2403 using the latest Hubble Frontier Fields data. Our model independent method finds that the extended lensing pattern is generated by two elongated, closely projected clusters of similar mass. Our lens model identifies new lensed images with which we improve the accuracy of the dark matter distribution. We find that the bimodal mass distribution is nearly coincident with the bimodal X-ray emission, but with the two dark matter peaks lying closer together than the centroids of the X-ray emisison. We show this can be achieved if the collision has occurred close to the plane and such that the cores are deflected around each other. The projected mass profiles of both clusters are well constrained because of the many interior lensed images, leading to surprisingly flat mass profiles of both components in the region 15-100 kpc. We discuss the extent to which this may be generated by tidal forces in our dynamical model which are large during an encounter of this type as the cores "graze" each other. The relative velocity between the two cores is estimated to be about 1200 km/s and mostly along the line of sight so that our model is consistent with the relative redshift difference between the two cD galaxies (dz = 0.04).

Suppression of dense Kondo state in CeB6 under pressure

To investigate whether the dense Kondo compound CeB6 might evolve into a topological insulator under sufficient pressure, four-point electrical resistivity measurements have been carried out over the temperature range 1.3 K to 295 K in a diamond anvil cell to 122 GPa. The temperature of the resistivity maximum initially increases slowly with pressure but disappears between 12 and 20 GPa. The marked changes observed under pressure suggest that a valence and/or structural transition may have occurred. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements, however, fail to detect any change in crystal structure to 85 GPa. Although a transition into an insulating phase is not observed, this dense Kondo system is completely suppressed at 43 GPa, leaving behind what appears to be a conventional Fermi liquid metal.

Magnetic Ordering at Anomalously High Temperatures in Dy at Extreme Pressures: a New Kondo-Lattice State?

In an attempt to destabilize the magnetic state of the heavy lanthanides Dy and Gd, extreme pressures were applied in an electrical resistivity measurement to 157 GPa over the temperature range 5 - 295 K. The magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\text{o}}$ and spin-disorder resistance $R_{sd}$ of Dy, as well as the superconducting pair-breaking effect $ΔT_{c}$ in Y(1 at.\% Dy), are found to track each other in a highly non-monotonic fashion as a function of pressure, all three increasing sharply above 73 GPa, the critical pressure for a 6\% volume collapse in Dy. At 157 GPa $T_{\text{o}}$ is estimated to reach temperatures in the range 370 - 500 K, the highest magnetic ordering temperature of any lanthanide. In contrast, $T_{\text{o}% }(P)$ for Gd shows no such sharp increase to 105 GPa. Taken together, these results suggest that pressures greater than 73 GPa transform Dy from a conventional magnetic lanthanide into a Kondo lattice system with an anomalously high magnetic ordering temperature.

Different routes to pressure-induced volume collapse transitions in gadolinium and terbium metals

The sudden decrease in molar volume exhibited by most lanthanides under high pressure is often attributed to changes in the degree of localization of their 4f-electrons. We give evidence, based on electrical resistivity measurements of dilute Y(Gd) and Y(Tb) alloys to 120 GPa, that the volume collapse transitions in Gd and Tb metals have different origins, despite their being neighbors in the periodic table. Remarkably, the change under pressure in the magnetic state of isolated Pr or Tb impurity ions in the nonmagnetic Y host appears to closely mirror corresponding changes in pure Pr or Tb metals. The collapse in Tb appears to be driven by an enhanced negative exchange interaction between 4f and conduction electrons under pressure (Kondo resonance) which, in the case of Y(Tb), dramatically alters the superconducting properties of the Y host, much like previously found for Y(Pr). In Gd our resistivity measurements suggest that a Kondo resonance is not the main driver for its volume collapse. X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies clearly show that 4f local moments remain largely intact across both volume collapse transitions ruling out 4f band formation (delocalization) and valence transition models as possible drivers. The results highlight the richness of behavior behind the volume collapse transition in lanthanides and demonstrate the stability of the 4f level against band formation to extreme pressure.

An Analysis of the Rapidly Rotating Bp Star HD 133880

HD 133880 is a rapidly rotating Bp star and host to one of the strongest magnetic fields of any Bp star. A member of the Upper Centaurus Lupus association, it is a star with a well-determined age of 16 Myr. Twelve new spectra obtained from the FEROS, ESPaDOnS, and HARPS instruments, provide sufficient material from which to re-evaluate the magnetic field and obtain a first approximation to the atmospheric abundance distributions of various elements. Using the new magnetic field measurements and optical photometry together with previously published data, we refine the period of HD 133880 to P = 0.877476 \pm 0.000009 days. The magnetic field structure was characterised by a colinear multipole expansion from the observed variations of the longitudinal and surface fields with rotational phase. This simple axisymmetric magnetic field model is based on a predominantly quadrupolar component that roughly describes the field variations. Using spectrum synthesis, we derived mean abundances for O, Mg, Si, Ti, Cr, Fe, Nd and Pr. All elements, except Mg (which has a uniform distribution), are overabundant compared to the Sun and are more abundant in the negative than in the positive magnetic hemisphere. In contrast to most Bp stars the abundance of O in HD 133880 is overabundant compared to the solar abundance ratio. In studying the Halpha and Paschen lines in the optical spectra we could not unambiguously detect information about the magnetosphere of HD 133880. However, radio emission data at both 3 and 6 cm suggests that the magnetospheric plasma is held in rigid rotation with the star by the magnetic field and further supported against collapse by the rapid rotation. Subtle differences in the shapes of the optically thick radio light curves at 3 and 6 cm suggest that the large-scale magnetic field is not fully axisymmetric at large distances from the star.

An unusual stellar death on Christmas Day

Long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most dramatic examples of massive stellar deaths, usually as- sociated with supernovae (Woosley et al. 2006). They release ultra-relativistic jets producing non-thermal emission through synchrotron radiation as they interact with the surrounding medium (Zhang et al. 2004). Here we report observations of the peculiar GRB 101225A (the "Christmas burst"). Its gamma-ray emission was exceptionally long and followed by a bright X-ray transient with a hot thermal component and an unusual optical counterpart. During the first 10 days, the optical emission evolved as an expanding, cooling blackbody after which an additional component, consistent with a faint supernova, emerged. We determine its distance to 1.6 Gpc by fitting the spectral-energy distribution and light curve of the optical emission with a GRB-supernova template. Deep optical observations may have revealed a faint, unresolved host galaxy. Our proposed progenitor is a helium star-neutron star merger that underwent a common envelope phase expelling its hydrogen envelope. The resulting explosion created a GRB-like jet which gets thermalized by interacting with the dense, previously ejected material and thus creating the observed black-body, until finally the emission from the supernova dominated. An alternative explanation is a minor body falling onto a neutron star in the Galaxy (Campana et al. 2011).

The Central Region of the Nearby Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 4945 : A Pair of Spirals

NGC 4945 is a Seyfert 2 galaxy at a distance of 3.82 Mpc. Its relative proximity has permitted a detailed SMA study of the circumnuclear molecular gas in a galaxy exhibiting an AGN. Based on an analysis of the high-resolution velocity field of the central region (20" X 20", 1" = 19 pc), we demonstrate that the S-shaped structure of the isovelocity contours is well reproduced by the numerical results of a two dimensional hydrodynamical simulation. In particular, the velocity structure is represented by the bending produced by a shock along the spiral density waves, which are excited at the outer-inner Lindblad resonance by a fast rotating bar. The simulated density map reveals a pair of tightly wound spirals in the center which pass through most of the ring-like (claimed to be a circumnuclear starburst ring by other authors) high intensity region in the observations as well as intersect several Pa$α$ emission line knots located outside the ring-like region. The calculated mass inflow rate at a scale of 50 pc is about three times the inferred mass accretion rate of the AGN of NGC 4945. We find that self-gravity of the gas is important and should be included in our model for NGC 4945. The model is compared with the gas orbit model discussed in Lim et al. (2009), and it is shown that the hydrodynamic model provides a better match to the observed position-velocity diagram and, hence, provides a more reliable prediction of the outer inner Lindblad resonance position.

High-resolution mapping of the physical conditions in two nearby active galaxies based on 12CO(1-0), (2-1) and (3-2) lines

We present a detailed analysis of high resolution observations of the three lowest CO transitions in two nearby active galaxies, NGC4569 and NGC4826. The CO(1-0) and (2-1) lines were observed with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer and the CO(3-2) line with the Submillimeter Array. Combining these data allows us to compare the emission in the three lines and to map the line ratios, R21=I_{CO(2-1)}/I_{CO(1-0)} and R32=I_{CO(3-2)}/I_{CO(1-0)} at a resolution of ~2", i.e., a linear resolution of 160 pc for NGC4569 and 40 pc for NGC4826. In both galaxies the emission in the three lines is similarly distributed spatially and in velocity, and CO is less excited (R32<0.6) than in the Galactic Center or the centers of other active galaxies studied so far. According to a pseudo-LTE model the molecular gas in NGC4569 is cold and mainly optically thick in the CO(1-0) and (2-1) lines; less than 50% of the gas is optically thin in the CO(3-2) line. LVG modeling suggests the presence of an elongated ring of cold and dense gas coinciding with the ILR of the stellar bar. More excited gas is resolved in the circumnuclear disk of NGC4826. According to our pseudo-LTE model this corresponds to warmer gas with a ~50% of the CO(3-2) emission being optically thin. LVG modeling indicates the presence of a semicircular arc of dense and cold gas centered on the dynamical center and ~70 pc in radius. The gas temperature increases and its density decreases toward the center. A near side/far side asymmetry noticeable in the CO, R32 and Pa-alpha maps suggests that opacity effects play a role. Examining published CO maps of nearby active galaxies we find similar asymmetries suggesting that this could be a common phenomenon in active galaxies. These mainly qualitative results open new perspectives for the study of active galaxies with the future Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array.

Magnetic Field Topology in Low-Mass Stars: Spectropolarimetric Observations of M Dwarfs

(ABRIDGED) We report here our mapping of the magnetic field topology of the M4 dwarf G 164-31 (or Gl 490B), which is expected to be fully convective, based on time series data collected from 20 hours of observations spread over 3 successive nights with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter. Our tomographic imaging technique applied to time series of rotationally modulated circularly polarized profiles reveals an axisymmetric large-scale poloidal magnetic field on the M4 dwarf. We then apply a synthetic spectrum fitting technique for measuring the average magnetic flux on the star. The flux measured in G 164-31 is Bf = 3.2+-0.4 kG, which is significantly greater than the average value of 0.68 kG determined from the imaging technique. The difference indicates that a significant fraction of the stellar magnetic energy is stored in small-scale structures at the surface of G 164-31. Our H_alpha emission light curve shows evidence for rotational modulation suggesting the presence of localized structure in the chromosphere of this M dwarf. The radius of the M4 dwarf derived from the rotational period and the projected equatorial velocity is at least 30% larger than that predicted from theoretical models. We argue that this discrepancy is likely primarily due to the young nature of G 164-31 rather than primarily due to magnetic field effects, indicating that age is an important factor which should be considered in the interpretation of this observational result. We also report here our polarimetric observations of five other M dwarfs with spectral types from M0 to M4.5, three of them showing strong Zeeman signatures.

Shock-enhanced ammonia emission in the Egg nebula

We present high angular resolution observations of the NH$_3$(1,1), (2,2) and (3,3) inversion transitions from the Egg Nebula, the archetypical proto-planetary nebula. The spatial distribution and kinematics of the emission in all three lines show four distinct components or lobes that are aligned with the polar and equatorial directions. The kinematics of the NH$_3$ emission is also found to follow a clear pattern: redshifted emission in the South and West and blueshifted emission in the North and East. The morphology and spatial kinematics of NH$_3$ emission are shown to have strong similarity to that observed previously in molecular hydrogen emission and CO emission which arise from the shocked molecular gas. We also find that the higher lying inversion transition NH$_3$ (2,2) and (3,3) are stronger in the polar direction in comparison to the lower transition NH$_3$ (1,1). We conclude that the NH$_3$ emission traces the warm molecular gas, which is shocked and heated by the interaction between the high velocity outflows and the surrounding envelope. The presence of strong ammonia emission associated with the shock fronts and the lack of the emission at the center of the nebula indicate that the abundance of ammonia is significantly enhanced by shocks, a situation very similar to that found in outflows from protostars.

Observation of beam loading in a laser-plasma accelerator

Beam loading is the phenomenon which limits the charge and the beam quality in plasma based accelerators. An experimental study conducted with a laser-plasma accelerator is presented. Beam loading manifests itself through the decrease of the beam energy, the reduction of dark current and the increase of the energy spread for large beam charge. 3D PIC simulations are compared to the experimental results and confirm the effects of beam loading. It is found that, in our experimental conditions, the trapped electron beams generate decelerating fields on the order of 1 GV/m/pC and that beam loading effects are optimized for trapped charges of about 20 pC.

On the Formation of Perseus OB1 at High Galactic Latitudes

The Per OB1 association, which contains the remarkable double cluster h and chi Per, is unusual in not having a giant molecular cloud in its vicinity. We show from Hipparcos data that the luminous members of this association exhibits a bulk motion away from the galactic plane, such that their average velocity increases with height above the galactic plane. We find HAeBe and T Tauri stars towards probable remnant molecular clouds associated with Per OB1. These star-forming regions lie well beyond the location of the luminous member stars at heights of 280-400 pc above the galactic plane, far higher than that previously found for embedded clusters. We argue that the observed motion of the luminous member stars is most naturally explained if many formed from molecular gas pushed and accelerated outwards by an expanding superbubble driven presumably by stellar winds and perhaps also supernova explosions. A large shell of atomic hydrogen gas and dust that lies just beyond the remnant molecular clouds, believed to be driven by just such a superbubble, may comprise the swept-up remains of the parental giant molecular cloud from which this association formed. In support of this picture, we find a week trend for the younger O star members to lie at higher galactic latitudes than the older supergiant members. The star-forming regions located at even larger heights above the galactic plane presumably correspond to more recent episodes of star formation at or near the periphery of this superbubble.

Molecular gas in nearby elliptical radio galaxies

Powerful radio-AGN are hosted by massive elliptical galaxies which are usually very poor in molecular gas. Nevertheless the central Black Hole (BH) needs molecular gas for the nuclear activity. Thus it is important to study the origin, the distribution and the kinematics of the molecular gas in such objects. We have performed at the IRAM-30m telescope a survey of the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission in the most powerful radio galaxies of the Local Universe, selected only on the basis of their radio continuum fluxes. The main result of that survey is the low content in molecular gas of such galaxies compared to Seyfert galaxies. The median value of the molecular gas mass is 4x10^8 Msun. Moreover, the CO spectra indicate the presence of a central molecular gas disk in some of these radio galaxies. We complemented this survey with photometric data of SPITZER and IRAS fluxes with the purpose to study the dust and its relation with the molecular gas and AGN.

Massive expanding torus and fast outflow in planetary nebula NGC 6302

We present interferometric observations of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $J$=2$-$1 emission from the butterfly-shaped, young planetary nebula NGC 6302. The high angular resolution and high sensitivity achieved in our observations allow us to resolve the nebula into two distinct kinematic components: (1) a massive expanding torus seen almost edge-on and oriented in the North-South direction, roughly perpendicular to the optical nebula axis. The torus exhibits very complex and fragmentated structure; (2) high velocity molecular knots moving at high velocity, higher than 20 \kms, and located in the optical bipolar lobes. These knots show a linear position-velocity gradient (Hubble-like flow), which is characteristic of fast molecular outflow in young planetary nebulae. From the low but variable $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO $J$=2$-$1 line intensity ratio we conclude that the $^{12}$CO $J$=2$-$1 emission is optically thick over much of the nebula. Using the optically thinner line $^{13}$CO $J$=2$-$1 we estimate a total molecular gas mass of $\sim$ 0.1 M$_\odot$, comparable to the ionized gas mass; the total gas mass of the NGC 6302 nebula, including the massive ionized gas from photon dominated region, is found to be $\sim$ 0.5 M$_\odot$. From radiative transfer modelling we infer that the torus is seen at inclination angle of 75$^\circ$ with respect to the plane of the sky and expanding at velocity of 15 \kms. Comparison with recent observations of molecular gas in NGC 6302 is also discussed.

Discovery of new nearby L and late-M dwarfs at low Galactic latitude from the DENIS database

We report new nearby L and late-M dwarfs (d_phot <= 30 pc) discovered in our search for nearby ultracool dwarfs (I-J >= 3.0, later than M8.0) at low Galactic latitude (|b| < 15 degr) over 4,800 square degrees in the DENIS database. We used late-M (>=M8.0), L, and T dwarfs with accurate trigonometric parallaxes to calibrate the M_J versus I-J colour-luminosity relation. The resulting photometric distances have standard errors of ~15%, which we used to select candidates d_phot <= 30 pc. We measured proper motions from multi-epoch images found in the public archives ALADIN, DSS, 2MASS, DENIS, with at least three distinct epochs and time baselines of 10 to 21 years. We then used a Maximum Reduced Proper Motion cutoff to select 28 candidates as ultracool dwarfs (M8.0--L8.0) and to reject one as a distant red star. No T dwarf candidates were found in this search which required an object to be detected in all three DENIS bands. Our low-resolution optical spectra confirmed that 26 of them were indeed ultracool dwarfs, with spectral types from M8.0 to L5.5. Two contaminants and one rejected by the Maximum Reduced Proper Motion cutoff were all reddened F-K main sequence stars. 20 of these 26 ultracool dwarfs are new nearby ultracool dwarf members, three L dwarfs within 15 pc with one L3.5 at only ~10 pc. We determine a stellar density of \barΦ_J cor=(1.64 +- 0.46).10^{-3} dwarfs pc^{-3} mag^{-1} over 11.1 <= M_J <= 13.1 based on that sample of M8--L3.5 ultracool dwarfs. Our ultracool dwarf density value is in good agreement with the Cruz et al. measurement of the ultracool dwarf density at high Galactic latitude.
