Integrable atomtronic interferometry

High sensitivity quantum interferometry requires more than just access to entangled states. It is achieved through deep understanding of quantum correlations in a system. Integrable models offer the framework to develop this understanding. We communicate the design of interferometric protocols for an integrable model that describes the interaction of bosons in a four-site configuration. Analytic formulae for the quantum dynamics of certain observables are computed. These expose the system's functionality as both an interferometric identifier, and producer, of NOON states. Being equivalent to a controlled-phase gate acting on two hybrid qudits, this system also highlights an equivalence between Heisenberg-limited interferometry and quantum information. These results are expected to open new avenues for integrability-enhanced atomtronic technologies.

Integrable model of bosons in a four-well ring with anisotropic tunneling

We introduce an integrable, four-well ring model for bosons where the tunneling couplings between nearest-neighbour wells are not restricted to be equal. We show how the model may be derived through the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method from a solution of the Yang--Baxter equation, and in turn solved by algebraic Bethe Ansatz means. The model admits multiple pseudovaccum states. Numerical evidence is provided to indicate that all pseudovacua are required to obtain a complete set of Bethe eigenstates. The model has the notable property that there is a class of eigenstates which admit a simple, closed-form energy expression.

A variational approach for the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method

We introduce a variational approach for the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method to exactly solve a class of Hamiltonians via Bethe ansatz methods. We undertake this in a manner which does not rely on any prior knowledge of integrability through the existence of a set of conserved operators. The procedure is conducted in the framework of Hamiltonians describing the crossover between the low-temperature phenomena of superconductivity, in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory, and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). The Hamiltonians considered describe systems with interacting Cooper pairs and a bosonic degree of freedom. We obtain general exact solvability requirements which include seven subcases which have previously appeared in the literature.

Ground-state phase diagram for a system of interacting, $D(D_3)$ non-Abelian anyons

We study an exactly solvable model of $D(D_3)$ non-Abelian anyons on a one-dimensional lattice with a free coupling parameter in the Hamiltonian. For certain values of the coupling parameter level crossings occur, which divide the ground-state phase diagram into four regions. We obtain explicit expressions for the ground-state energy in each phase, for both closed and open chain boundary conditions. For the closed chain case we show that chiral phases occur which are characterised by non-zero ground-state momentum.

Bethe ansatz solution of an integrable, non-Abelian anyon chain with D(D_3) symmetry

The exact solution for the energy spectrum of a one-dimensional Hamiltonian with local two-site interactions and periodic boundary conditions is determined. The two-site Hamiltonians commute with the symmetry algebra given by the Drinfeld double D(D_3) of the dihedral group D_3. As such the model describes local interactions between non-Abelian anyons, with fusion rules given by the tensor product decompositions of the irreducible representations of D(D_3). The Bethe ansatz equations which characterise the exact solution are found through the use of functional relations satisfied by a set of mutually commuting transfer matrices.

Solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation: descendants of the six-vertex model from the Drinfeld doubles of dihedral group algebras

The representation theory of the Drinfeld doubles of dihedral groups is used to solve the Yang-Baxter equation. Use of the 2-dimensional representations recovers the six-vertex model solution. Solutions in arbitrary dimensions, which are viewed as descendants of the six-vertex model case, are then obtained using tensor product graph methods which were originally formulated for quantum algebras. Connections with the Fateev-Zamolodchikov model are discussed.

Integrable boundary conditions for a non-abelian anyon chain with $D(D_3)$ symmetry

A general formulation of the Boundary Quantum Inverse Scattering Method is given which is applicable in cases where $R$-matrix solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation do not have the property of crossing unitarity. Suitably modified forms of the reflection equations are presented which permit the construction of a family of commuting transfer matrices. As an example, we apply the formalism to determine the most general solutions of the reflection equations for a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation with underlying symmetry given by the Drinfeld double $D(D_3)$ of the dihedral group $D_3$. This $R$-matrix does not have the crossing unitarity property. In this manner we derive integrable boundary conditions for an open chain model of interacting non-abelian anyons.

Some spectral equivalences between Schrodinger operators

Spectral equivalences of the quasi-exactly solvable sectors of two classes of Schrodinger operators are established, using Gaudin-type Bethe ansatz equations. In some instances the results can be extended leading to full isospectrality. In this manner we obtain equivalences between PT-symmetric problems and Hermitian problems. We also find equivalences between some classes of Hermitian operators.

Iterated dynamical maps in an ion trap

Iterated dynamical maps offer an ideal setting to investigate quantum dynamical bifurcations and are well adapted to few-qubit quantum computer realisations. We show that a single trapped ion, subject to periodic impulsive forces, exhibits a rich structure of dynamical bifurcations derived from the Jahn-Teller Hamiltonian flow model. We show that the entanglement between the oscillator and electronic degrees of freedom reflects the underlying dynamical bifurcation in a Floquet eigenstate.

Premonoidal categories associated with representations of finite groups and their quantum doubles

We study the construction of premonoidal categories, where the pentagon relation fails, through representations of finite group algebras and their quantum doubles. Both finite group algebras and their quantum doubles have a finite number of irreducible representations. We show that in each case there are at least $2^{n-1}$ inequivalent premonoidal categories of representations, where $n$ is the number of irreducible representations. By construction, for the case of finite group algebras the categories are symmetric whereas for the quantum doubles the categories are braided.

The two-site Bose--Hubbard model

The two-site Bose--Hubbard model is a simple model used to study Josephson tunneling between two Bose--Einstein condensates. In this work we give an overview of some mathematical aspects of this model. Using a classical analysis, we study the equations of motion and the level curves of the Hamiltonian. Then, the quantum dynamics of the model is investigated using direct diagonalisation of the Hamiltonian. In both of these analyses, the existence of a threshold coupling between a delocalised and a self-trapped phase is evident, in qualitative agreement with experiments. We end with a discussion of the exact solvability of the model via the algebraic Bethe ansatz.

A Bethe ansatz solvable model for superpositions of Cooper pairs and condensed molecular bosons

We introduce a general Hamiltonian describing coherent superpositions of Cooper pairs and condensed molecular bosons. For particular choices of the coupling parameters, the model is integrable. One integrable manifold, as well as the Bethe ansatz solution, was found by Dukelsky et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 050403. Here we show that there is a second integrable manifold, established using the boundary Quantum Inverse Scattering Method. In this manner we obtain the exact solution by means of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. In the case where the Cooper pair energies are degenerate we examine the relationship between the spectrum of these integrable Hamiltonians and the quasi-exactly solvable spectrum of particular Schrodinger operators. For the solution we derive here the potential of the Schrodinger operator is given in terms of hyperbolic functions. For the solution derived by Dukelsky et al., loc. cit. the potential is sextic and the wavefunctions obey PT-symmetric boundary conditions. This latter case provides a novel example of an integrable Hermitian Hamiltonian acting on a Fock space whose states map in to a Hilbert space of PT-symmetric wavefunctions defined on a contour in the complex plane.

Representations of the quantum doubles of finite group algebras and solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation

Quantum doubles of finite group algebras form a class of quasi-triangular Hopf algebras which algebraically solve the Yang--Baxter equation. Each representation of the quantum double then gives a matrix solution of the Yang--Baxter equation. Such solutions do not depend on a spectral parameter, and to date there has been little investigation into extending these solutions such that they do depend on a spectral parameter. Here we first explicitly construct the matrix elements of the generators for all irreducible representations of quantum doubles of the dihedral groups $D_n$. These results may be used to determine constant solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation. We then discuss Baxterisation ansätze to obtain solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation with spectral parameter and give several examples, including a new 21-vertex model. We also describe this approach in terms of minimal-dimensional representations of the quantum doubles of the alternating group $A_4$ and the symmetric group $S_4$.

Classical and quantum dynamics of a model for atomic-molecular Bose--Einstein condensates

We study a model for a two-mode atomic-molecular Bose--Einstein condensate. Starting with a classical analysis we determine the phase space fixed points of the system. It is found that bifurcations of the fixed points naturally separate the coupling parameter space into four regions. The different regions give rise to qualitatively different dynamics. We then show that this classification holds true for the quantum dynamics.

Behaviour of the energy gap in a model of Josephson coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

In this work we investigate the energy gap between the ground state and the first excited state in a model of two single-mode Bose-Einstein condensates coupled via Josephson tunneling. The energy gap is never zero when the tunneling interaction is non-zero. The gap exhibits no local minimum below a threshold coupling which separates a delocalised phase from a self-trapping phase which occurs in the absence of the external potential. Above this threshold point one minimum occurs close to the Josephson regime, and a set of minima and maxima appear in the Fock regime. Analytic expressions for the position of these minima and maxima are obtained. The connection between these minima and maxima and the dynamics for the expectation value of the relative number of particles is analysed in detail. We find that the dynamics of the system changes as the coupling crosses these points.

Lax Operator for the Quantised Orthosymplectic Superalgebra U_q[osp(2|n)]

Each quantum superalgebra is a quasi-triangular Hopf superalgebra, so contains a \textit{universal $R$-matrix} in the tensor product algebra which satisfies the Yang-Baxter equation. Applying the vector representation $π$, which acts on the vector module $V$, to one side of a universal $R$-matrix gives a Lax operator. In this paper a Lax operator is constructed for the $C$-type quantum superalgebras $U_q[osp(2|n)]$. This can in turn be used to find a solution to the Yang-Baxter equation acting on $V \otimes V \otimes W$ where $W$ is an arbitrary $U_q[osp(2|n)]$ module. The case $W=V$ is included here as an example.

Eigenvalues of Casimir invariants for Uq[osp(m|n)]

For each quantum superalgebra $U_q[osp(m|n)]$ with $m>2$, an infinite family of Casimir invariants is constructed. This is achieved by using an explicit form for the Lax operator. The eigenvalue of each Casimir invariant on an arbitrary irreducible highest weight module is also calculated.
