CMOS compatible high-performance nanolasing based on perovskite-SiN hybrid integration

Coherent light sources in silicon photonics are the long-sought holy grail because silicon-based materials have indirect bandgap. Traditional strategies for realizing such sources, e.g., heterogeneous photonic integration, strain engineering and nonlinear process, are technologically demanding. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid lasing device composing of perovskite nanocrystals and silicon nitride nanobeam cavity. We fabricate SiN photonic crystal naonobeam cavities on a solid substrate with significantly improved thermal and mechanical stabilities compared to conventional suspended ones. In addition, adding a PMMA-encapsulation layer on top of the SiN can significantly boost the Q-factor of the cavity mode. By dispersing perovskite nanocrystals as emitters in the PMMA layer, we obtained high-performance coherent emissions in terms of lasing threshold, linewidth and mode volumes. Our work offers a compelling way of creating solution-processed active integrated photonic devices based on the mature platform of silicon photonics for applications in optical information science and photonic quantum technology.

Spontaneous Rotation of Ferrimagnetism Driven by Antiferromagnetic Spin Canting

Spin-reorientation phase transitions that involve the rotation of a crystal$'$s magnetization have been well characterized in distorted-perovskite oxides such as the orthoferrites. In these systems spin reorientation occurs due to competing rare-earth and transition metal anisotropies coupled via $f$-$d$ exchange. Here, we demonstrate an alternative paradigm for spin reorientation in distorted perovskites. We show that the $R_2\mathrm{CuMnMn_4O_{12}}$ (R = Y or Dy) triple A-site columnar-ordered quadruple perovskites have three ordered magnetic phases and up to two spin-reorientation phase transitions. Unlike the spin-reorientation phenomena in other distorted perovskites, these transitions are independent of rare-earth magnetism, but are instead driven by an instability towards antiferromagnetic spin canting likely originating in frustrated Heisenberg exchange interactions, and the competition between Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and single-ion anisotropies.

Anisotropic behavior of TiB2 nanoparticles reinforced 2024Al composites rolling sheet

The in-plane anisotropy (IPA) of mechanical properties existed in plate products is often undesired since it limits the industrial application and increases the difficulty of material processing. It is thus one of the important factors which requires strict control during the manufacture of high-performance aluminum alloy plates. The anisotropic behavior of TiB2/2024Al composite rolling sheet under different heat treatment is studied in this article. T4 heat treated specimen shows good isotropy of yield strength and its texture components are significantly weakened compared with traditional Al alloys. The evolution of microstructures for T4 specimen was studied. The submicron TiB2 particles increase the driving force of recrystallization during rolling process and static recrystallization (SRX) is stimulated, thus induces texture randomization. Anisotropic behavior of yield strength occurs in specimen after T3 heat treatment. It is supposed that the difference in the activation of slip system under different loading direction gives rise to this anisotropy.

A parsec-scale wobbling jet in the high-synchrotron peaked blazar PG 1553+113

PG 1553+113 is the first blazar showing an approximately two-year quasi-periodic pattern in its gamma-ray light curve. Such quasi-periodicity might have a geometrical origin, possibly related to the precessing nature of the jet, or could be intrinsic to the source and related to pulsational accretion flow instabilities. By means of a ~2yr very long baseline array (VLBA) monitoring at 15, 24, and 43 GHz we investigate the source pc-scale properties during an entire cycle of gamma-ray activity in the period 2015-2017. In contrast to the well-defined periodicity in the gamma-ray emission, at radio frequencies no clear periodic pattern can be recognized. The jet position angle, constrained by means of the total intensity ridge line, varies across the different observing epochs in the range 40-60 deg. We also investigate the time evolution of the source polarization properties, including the rotation measure. The brightness temperature is found to decrease as the frequency increases with an intrinsic value of ~1.5 x 10^10 K and the estimated Doppler factor is ~1.4.

High figure-of-merit in the heavy-fermion UN2 system for radioisotope thermoelectric applications

The design of uranium-based thermoelectric materials presents a novel and intriguing strategy for directly converting nuclear heat into electrical power. Using high-level first-principles approach combined with accurate solution of Boltzmann transport equation, we demonstrate that a giant n-type power factor of 13.8 mW/mK^2 and a peak ZT value of 2.2 can be realized in the heavy-fermion UN2 compound at 700 K. Such promising thermoelectric performance arises from the large degeneracy (Nv=14) of heavy conduction band coupled with weak electron-phonon interactions, which is in principle governed by the strong Coulomb correlation among the partially filled U-5f electrons in the face-centered cubic structure. Collectively, our theoretical work suggests that the energetic UN2 is an excellent alternative to efficient radioisotope power conversion, which also uncovers an underexplored area for thermoelectric research.

Subfemtosecond glory hologrammetry for vectorial optical waveform reconstruction

In this paper, we propose a new method to characterize the temporal structure of arbitrary optical laser pulses with low pulse energies. This approach is based on strong field photoelectron holography with the glory rescattering effect as the underlying mechanism in the near-forward direction. Utilizing the subfemtosecond glory rescattering process as a fast temporal gate to sample the unknown light pulse, the time-dependent vectorial electric field can be retrieved from the streaking photoelectron momentum spectra. Our method avoids the challenging task of generation or manipulation of attosecond pulses and signifies important progress in arbitrary optical waveform characterization.

Localizing the $γ$-ray emitting region in the blazar TXS 2013+370

The $γ$-ray production mechanism and its localization in blazars are still a matter of debate. The main goal of this paper is to constrain the location of the high-energy emission in the blazar TXS 2013+370 and to study the physical and geometrical properties of the inner jet region on sub-pc scales. VLBI observations at 86 GHz and space-VLBI at 22 GHz allowed us to image the jet base with an angular resolution of $\sim$0.4 pc. By employing CLEAN imaging and Gaussian model-fitting, we performed a thorough kinematic analysis, which provided estimates of the jet speed, orientation, and component ejection times. Additionally, we studied the jet expansion profile and used the information on the jet geometry to estimate the location of the jet apex. VLBI data were combined with single-dish measurements to search for correlated activity between the radio and $γ$-ray emission. The high-resolution VLBI imaging revealed the existence of a spatially bent jet, described by moving and stationary features. New jet features are observed to emerge from the core, accompanied by flaring activity in radio bands and $γ$ rays. The analysis of the transverse jet width profile constrains the location of the mm core to lie $\leq$ 2 pc downstream of the jet apex, and also reveals the existence of a transition from parabolic to conical jet expansion at a distance of $\sim$54 pc from the core, corresponding to $\sim$1.5$\times$10$^{\rm 6}$ Schwarzschild radii. The cross-correlation analysis reveals a strong correlation between the radio and $γ$-ray data, with the 1 mm emission lagging $\sim$49 days behind the $γ$ rays. Based on this, we infer that the high energy emission is produced at a distance of $\sim$1 pc from the VLBI core, suggesting that the seed photon fields for the external Compton mechanism originate either in the dusty torus or in the broad-line region.

Exclusive $π^+$ electroproduction off the proton from low to high -t

Background: Measurements of exclusive meson production are a useful tool in the study of hadronic structure. In particular, one can discern the relevant degrees of freedom at different distance scales through these studies. Purpose: To study the transition between non-perturbative and perturbative Quantum Chromodyanmics as the square of four momentum transfer to the struck proton, -t, is increased. Method: Cross sections for the $^1$H(e,e'$π^+$)n reaction were measured over the -t range of 0.272 to 2.127 GeV$^2$ with limited azimuthal coverage at fixed beam energy of 4.709 GeV, Q$^2$ of 2.4 GeV$^2$ and W of 2.0 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) Hall C. Results: The -t dependence of the measured $π^+$ electroproduction cross section generally agrees with prior data from JLab Halls B and C. The data are consistent with a Regge amplitude based theoretical model, but show poor agreement with a Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) based model. Conclusion: The agreement of cross sections with prior data implies small contribution from the interference terms, and the confirmation of the change in t-slopes between the low and high -t regions previously observed in photoproduction indicates the changing nature of the electroproduction reaction in our kinematic regime.

Sensitivity of the COHERENT Experiment to Accelerator-Produced Dark Matter

The COHERENT experiment is well poised to test sub-GeV dark matter models using low-energy recoil detectors sensitive to coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) in the $π$-DAR neutrino beam produced by the Spallation Neutron Source. We show how a planned 750-kg liquid argon scintillation detector would place leading limits on scalar light dark matter models, over two orders of magnitude of dark matter mass, for dark matter particles produced through vector and leptophobic portals in the absence of other effects beyond the standard model. The characteristic timing structure of a $π$-DAR beam allows a unique opportunity for constraining systematic uncertainties on the standard model background in a time window where signal is not expected, enhancing expected sensitivity. Additionally, we discuss future prospects, further increasing the discovery potential of CEvNS detectors. Such methods would test the calculated thermal dark matter abundance for all couplings $α'\leq1$ within the vector portal model over an order of magnitude of dark matter masses.

Improved limits on Fierz Interference using asymmetry measurements from the UCNA experiment

The Ultracold Neutron Asymmetry (UCNA) experiment was designed to measure the $β$-decay asymmetry parameter, $A_0$, for free neutron decay. In the experiment, polarized ultracold neutrons are transported into a decay trap, and their $β$-decay electrons are detected with $\approx 4π$ acceptance into two detector packages which provide position and energy reconstruction. The experiment also has sensitivity to $b_{n}$, the Fierz interference term in the neutron $β$-decay rate. In this work, we determine $b_{n}$ from the energy dependence of $A_0$ using the data taken during the UCNA 2011-2013 run. In addition, we present the same type of analysis using the earlier 2010 $A$ dataset. Motivated by improved statistics and comparable systematic errors compared to the 2010 data-taking run, we present a new $b_{n}$ measurement using the weighted average of our asymmetry dataset fits, to obtain $b_{n} = 0.066 \pm 0.041_{\text{stat}} \pm 0.024_{\text{syst}}$ which corresponds to a limit of $-0.012 < b_{n} < 0.144$ at the 90% confidence level.

On Proportional Scintillation in Very Large LXe Detectors

The charge read out of a LXe detector via Proportional Scintillation in the liquid phase was first realized by the Waseda group 40 years ago, but at that time the technical challenges were overwhelming. Although the tests were successful, this method was finally discarded and eventually nearly forgotten. For present day large LXe Dark Matter detectors, this approach was not even considered. Instead the Dual Phase technology was selected despite many limitations and challenges. In two independent studies the groups from Columbia University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University reevaluated Proportional Scintillation in the liquid phase. Both established the merits for very large LXe detectors, but the Columbia group also encountered apparent limitations, namely the shadowing of the light by the anode wires and a dependence of the pulse shape on the drift path of the electrons in the anode region. The discrepancies between the two studies, however, are not intrinsic to the technique, but a direct consequence of the chosen geometry. Taking the geometrical differences into account the results match without ambiguity. They also agree with the original results from the Waseda group. With the technical problems solved, the path is now open to use this method in future large LXe TPCs.

Detecting intracranial aneurysm rupture from 3D surfaces using a novel GraphNet approach

Intracranial aneurysm (IA) is a life-threatening blood spot in human's brain if it ruptures and causes cerebral hemorrhage. It is challenging to detect whether an IA has ruptured from medical images. In this paper, we propose a novel graph based neural network named GraphNet to detect IA rupture from 3D surface data. GraphNet is based on graph convolution network (GCN) and is designed for graph-level classification and node-level segmentation. The network uses GCN blocks to extract surface local features and pools to global features. 1250 patient data including 385 ruptured and 865 unruptured IAs were collected from clinic for experiments. The performance on randomly selected 234 test patient data was reported. The experiment with the proposed GraphNet achieved accuracy of 0.82, area-under-curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve 0.82 in the classification task, significantly outperforming the baseline approach without using graph based networks. The segmentation output of the model achieved mean graph-node-based dice coefficient (DSC) score 0.88.

Origin of sawtooth domain walls in ferroelectrics

Domains and domain walls are among the key factors that determine the performance of ferroelectric materials. In recent years, a unique type of domain walls, i.e., the sawtooth-shaped domain walls, has been observed in BiFeO$_{3}$ and PbTiO$_{3}$. Here, we build a minimal model to reveal the origin of these sawtooth-shaped domain walls. Incorporating this model into Monte-Carlo simulations shows that (i) the competition between the long-range Coulomb interaction (due to bound charges) and short-range interaction (due to opposite dipoles) is responsible for the formation of these peculiar domain walls and (ii) their relative strength is critical in determining the periodicity of these sawtooth-shaped domain walls. Necessary conditions to form such domain walls are also discussed.

Charge effects in donor doped perovskite ferroelectrics

Doping is a widely used method to tune physical properties of ferroelectric perovskites. Since doping can induce charges due to the substitution of certain elements, charge effects shall be considered in doped samples. To understand how charges can affect the system, we incorporate the dipole-charge interaction into our simulations, where the pinched hysteresis loops can well be reproduced. Two charge compensation models are proposed and numerically investigated to understand how lanthanum doping affect BaTiO$_{3}$'s ferroelectric phase transition temperature and hysteresis loop. The consequences of the two charge compensation models are compared and discussed.

Unique Access to u-Channel Physics: Exclusive Backward-Angle Omega Meson Electroproduction

Backward-angle meson electroproduction above the resonance region, which was previously ignored, is anticipated to offer unique access to the three quark plus sea component of the nucleon wave function. In this letter, we present the first complete separation of the four electromagnetic structure functions above the resonance region in exclusive omega electroproduction off the proton, e + p -> e' + p + omega, at central Q^2 values of 1.60, 2.45 GeV^2 , at W = 2.21 GeV. The results of our pioneering -u ~ -u min study demonstrate the existence of a unanticipated backward-angle cross section peak and the feasibility of full L/T/LT/TT separations in this never explored kinematic territory. At Q^2 =2.45 GeV^2 , the observed dominance of sigma_T over sigma_L, is qualitatively consistent with the collinear QCD description in the near-backward regime, in which the scattering amplitude factorizes into a hard subprocess amplitude and baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs): universal non-perturbative objects only accessible through backward angle kinematics.

Measurement of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum from 40 GeV to 100 TeV with the DAMPE satellite

The precise measurement of the spectrum of protons, the most abundant component of the cosmic radiation, is necessary to understand the source and acceleration of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. This work reports the measurement of the cosmic ray proton fluxes with kinetic energies from 40 GeV to 100 TeV, with two and a half years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with a high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Our result suggests the existence of a new spectral feature of cosmic rays at energies lower than the so-called knee, and sheds new light on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays.

First Constraint on Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering in Argon

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) is the dominant neutrino scattering channel for neutrinos of energy $E_ν< 100$ MeV. We report a limit for this process using data collected in an engineering run of the 29 kg CENNS-10 liquid argon detector located 27.5 m from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Hg target with $4.2\times 10^{22}$ protons on target. The dataset yielded $< 7.4$ observed CEvNS events implying a cross section for the process, averaged over the SNS pion decay-at-rest flux, of $<3.4 \times 10^{-39}$ cm$^{2}$, a limit within twice the Standard Model prediction. This is the first limit on CEvNS from an argon nucleus and confirms the earlier CsI non-standard neutrino interaction constraints from the collaboration. This run demonstrated the feasibility of the ongoing experimental effort to detect CEvNS with liquid argon.

Measurement of spin mixing conductance in Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/$α$-W and Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/$β$-W heterostrucutures via ferromagnetic resonance

We present measurements of interfacial Gilbert damping due to the spin pumping effect in Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/W heterostructures. Measurements were compared for heterostructures in which the crystallographic phase of W, either $α$(bcc)-W or $β$(A15)-W, was enriched through deposition conditions and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (HR-XTEM). Single phase Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/$α$-W heterostructures could be realized, but heterostructures with $β$-W were realized as mixed $α$-$β$ phase. The spin mixing conductances (SMC) for W at interfaces with Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ were found to be significantly lower than those for similarly heavy metals such as Pd and Pt, but comparable to those for Ta, and independent of enrichment in the $β$ phase.
