Measurement of the neutron $β$-asymmetry parameter $A_0$ with ultracold neutrons

We present a detailed report of a measurement of the neutron $β$-asymmetry parameter $A_0$, the parity-violating angular correlation between the neutron spin and the decay electron momentum, performed with polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). UCN were extracted from a pulsed spallation solid deuterium source and polarized via transport through a 7-T magnetic field. The polarized UCN were then transported through an adiabatic-fast-passage spin-flipper field region, prior to storage in a cylindrical decay volume situated within a 1-T $2 \times 2π$ solenoidal spectrometer. The asymmetry was extracted from measurements of the decay electrons in multiwire proportional chamber and plastic scintillator detector packages located on both ends of the spectrometer. From an analysis of data acquired during runs in 2008 and 2009, we report $A_0 = -0.11966 \pm 0.00089_{-0.00140} ^{+0.00123}$, from which we extract a value for the ratio of the weak axial-vector and vector coupling constants of the nucleon, $λ= g_A/g_V = -1.27590 \pm 0.00239_{-0.00377}^{+0.00331}$. Complete details of the analysis are presented.

Electromagnon and phonon excitations in multiferroic TbMnO3

We have performed Raman measurements on TbMnO3 single crystal under magnetic field along the three crystallographic directions. The flip of the spin spiral plane creates an electromagnon excitation. In addition to the electromagnons induced by the Heisenberg coupling, we have detected the electromagnon created by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction along the c axis. We have identified all the vibrational modes of TbMnO3. Their temperature dependences show that only one phonon observed along the polarization axis is sensitive to the ferroelectric transition. This mode is tied to the Tb3+ ion displacements that contribute to the ferroelectric polarization.

The T2K Side Muon Range Detector

The T2K experiment is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment aiming to observe the appearance of ν e in a νμ beam. The νμ beam is produced at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), observed with the 295 km distant Super- Kamiokande Detector and monitored by a suite of near detectors at 280m from the proton target. The near detectors include a magnetized off-axis detector (ND280) which measures the un-oscillated neutrino flux and neutrino cross sections. The present paper describes the outermost component of ND280 which is a side muon range detector (SMRD) composed of scintillation counters with embedded wavelength shifting fibers and Multi-Pixel Photon Counter read-out. The components, performance and response of the SMRD are presented.

Intra-day variability observations of S5 0716+714 over 4.5 years at 4.8 GHz

We aim to search for evidence of annual modulation in the time scales of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714. The intra-day variability (IDV) observations were carried out monthly from 2005 to 2009, with the Urumqi 25m radio telescope at 4.8 GHz. The source has shown prominent IDV as well as long-term flux variations. The IDV time scale does show evidence in favor of an annual modulation, suggesting that the IDV of 0716+714 is dominated by interstellar scintillation. The source underwent a strong outburst phase between mid-2008 and mid-2009; a second intense flare was observed in late 2009, but no correlation between the total flux density and the IDV time scale is found, implying that the flaring state of the source does not have serious implications for the general characteristics of its intra-day variability. However, we find that the inner-jet position angle is changing throughout the years, which could result in an annual modulation noise in the anisotropic ISS model fit. There is also an indication that the lowest IDV amplitudes (rms flux density) correspond to the slowest time scales of IDV, which would be consistent with an ISS origin of the IDV of 0716+714.

Higher Order Spin Resonances in a 2.1 GeV/c Polarized Proton Beam

Spin resonances can depolarize or spin-flip a polarized beam. We studied 1st and higher order spin resonances with stored 2.1 GeV/c vertically polarized protons. The 1st order vertical (νy) resonance caused almost full spin-flip, while some higher order νy resonances caused partial depolarization. The 1st order horizontal (νx) resonance caused almost full depolarization, while some higher order νx resonances again caused partial depolarization. Moreover, a 2nd order νx resonance is about as strong as some 3rd order νx resonances, while some 3rd order νy resonances are much stronger than a 2nd order νy resonance. One thought that νy spin resonances are far stronger than νx, and that lower order resonances are stronger than higher order; the data do not support this.

Galaxy clusters discovered via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in the first 720 square degrees of the South Pole Telescope survey

We present a catalog of 224 galaxy cluster candidates, selected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect signature in the first 720 deg2 of the South Pole Telescope (SPT) survey. This area was mapped with the SPT in the 2008 and 2009 austral winters to a depth of 18 uK-arcmin at 150 GHz; 550 deg2 of it was also mapped to 44 uK-arcmin at 95 GHz. Based on optical imaging of all candidates and near-infrared imaging of the majority of candidates, we have found optical and/or infrared counterparts for 158 clusters. Of these, 135 were first identified as clusters in SPT data, including 117 new discoveries reported in this work. This catalog triples the number of confirmed galaxy clusters discovered through the SZ effect. We report photometrically derived (and in some cases spectroscopic) redshifts for confirmed clusters and redshift lower limits for the remaining candidates. The catalog extends to high redshift with a median redshift of z = 0.55 and maximum redshift of z = 1.37. Based on simulations, we expect the catalog to be nearly 100% complete above M500 ~ 5e14 Msun h_{70}^-1 at z > 0.6. There are 121 candidates detected at signal-to-noise greater than five, at which the catalog purity is measured to be 95%. From this high-purity subsample, we exclude the z < 0.3 clusters and use the remaining 100 candidates to improve cosmological constraints following the method presented by Benson et al., 2011. Adding the cluster data to CMB+BAO+H0 data leads to a preference for non-zero neutrino masses while only slightly reducing the upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses to sum mnu < 0.38 eV (95% CL). For a spatially flat wCDM cosmological model, the addition of this catalog to the CMB+BAO+H0+SNe results yields sigma8=0.807+-0.027 and w = -1.010+-0.058, improving the constraints on these parameters by a factor of 1.4 and 1.3, respectively. Axes determination for segmented true-coaxial HPGe detectors

A fast method to determine the crystallographic axes of segmented true-coaxial high-purity germanium detectors is presented. It is based on the analysis of segment-occupancy patterns obtained by irradiation with radioactive sources. The measured patterns are compared to predictions for different axes orientations. The predictions require a simulation of the trajectories of the charge carriers taking the transverse anisotropy of their drift into account.

Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in inclusive electroproduction of $π^-$ near the $Δ^0$ resonance

The parity-violating (PV) asymmetry of inclusive $π^-$ production in electron scattering from a liquid deuterium target was measured at backward angles. The measurement was conducted as a part of the G0 experiment, at a beam energy of 360 MeV. The physics process dominating pion production for these kinematics is quasi-free photoproduction off the neutron via the $Δ^0$ resonance. In the context of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory (HB$χ$PT), this asymmetry is related to a low energy constant $d_Δ^-$ that characterizes the parity-violating $γ$N$Δ$ coupling. Zhu et al. calculated $d_Δ^-$ in a model benchmarked by the large asymmetries seen in hyperon weak radiative decays, and predicted potentially large asymmetries for this process, ranging from $A_γ^-=-5.2$ to $+5.2$ ppm. The measurement performed in this work leads to $A_γ^-=-0.36\pm 1.06\pm 0.37\pm 0.03$ ppm (where sources of statistical, systematic and theoretical uncertainties are included), which would disfavor enchancements considered by Zhu et al. proportional to $V_{ud}/V_{us}$. The measurement is part of a program of inelastic scattering measurements that were conducted by the G0 experiment, seeking to determine the $N-Δ$ axial transition form-factors using PV electron scattering.

Optical followup of galaxy clusters detected by the South Pole Telescope

The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a 10 meter telescope operating at mm wavelengths. It has recently completed a three-band survey covering 2500 sq. degrees. One of the survey's main goals is to detect galaxy clusters using Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect and use these clusters for a variety of cosmological and astrophysical studies such as the dark energy equation of state, the primordial non-gaussianity and the evolution of galaxy populations. Since 2005, we have been engaged in a comprehensive optical and near-infrared followup program (at wavelengths between 0.4 and 5 μm) to image high-significance SPT clusters, to measure their photometric redshifts, and to estimate the contamination rate of the candidate lists. These clusters are then used for various cosmological and astrophysical studies.

Observation of TeV gamma rays from the Cygnus region with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

We report the observation of TeV gamma-rays from the Cygnus region using the ARGO-YBJ data collected from 2007 November to 2011 August. Several TeV sources are located in this region including the two bright extended MGRO J2019+37 and MGRO J2031+41. According to the Milagro data set, at 20 TeV MGRO J2019+37 is the most significant source apart from the Crab Nebula. No signal from MGRO J2019+37 is detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment, and the derived flux upper limits at 90% confidence level for all the events above 600 GeV with medium energy of 3 TeV are lower than the Milagro flux, implying that the source might be variable and hard to be identified as a pulsar wind nebula. The only statistically significant (6.4 standard deviations) gamma-ray signal is found from MGRO J2031+41, with a flux consistent with the measurement by Milagro.

Cosmological Constraints from Sunyaev-Zel'dovich-Selected Clusters with X-ray Observations in the First 178 Square Degrees of the South Pole Telescope Survey

We use measurements from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) cluster survey in combination with X-ray measurements to constrain cosmological parameters. We present a statistical method that fits for the scaling relations of the SZ and X-ray cluster observables with mass while jointly fitting for cosmology. The method is generalizable to multiple cluster observables, and self-consistently accounts for the effects of the cluster selection and uncertainties in cluster mass calibration on the derived cosmological constraints. We apply this method to a data set consisting of an SZ-selected catalog of 18 galaxy clusters at z > 0.3 from the first 178 deg2 of the 2500 deg2 SPT-SZ survey, with 14 clusters having X-ray observations from either Chandra or XMM. Assuming a spatially flat LCDM cosmological model, we find the SPT cluster sample constrain sigma_8 (Omega_m/0.25)^0.30 = 0.785 +- 0.037. In combination with measurements of the CMB power spectrum from the SPT and the seven-year WMAP data, the SPT cluster sample constrain sigma_8 = 0.795 +- 0.016 and Omega_m = 0.255 +- 0.016, a factor of 1.5 improvement on each parameter over the CMB data alone. We consider several extensions beyond the LCDM model by including the following as free parameters: the dark energy equation of state (w), the sum of the neutrino masses (sum mnu), the effective number of relativistic species (Neff), and a primordial non-Gaussianity (fNL). We find that adding the SPT cluster data significantly improves the constraints on w and sum mnu beyond those found when using measurements of the CMB, supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, and the Hubble constant. Considering each extension independently, we best constrain w=-0.973 +- 0.063 and the sum of neutrino masses sum mnu < 0.28 eV at 95% confidence, a factor of 1.25 and 1.4 improvement, respectively, over the constraints without clusters. Measurement of the temperature dependence of pulse lengths in an n-type germanium detector

The temperature dependence of the pulse length was measured for an 18-fold segmented n-type germanium detector in the temperature range of 77-120 K. The interactions of 122 keV photons originating from a Europium-152 source were selected and pulses as observed on the core and segment electrodes were studied. In both cases, the temperature dependence can be well described by a Boltzmann-like ansatz.

The MGDO software library for data analysis in Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments

The GERDA and Majorana experiments will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of germanium-76 using isotopically enriched high-purity germanium detectors. Although the experiments differ in conceptual design, they share many aspects in common, and in particular will employ similar data analysis techniques. The collaborations are jointly developing a C++ software library, MGDO, which contains a set of data objects and interfaces to encapsulate, store and manage physical quantities of interest, such as waveforms and high-purity germanium detector geometries. These data objects define a common format for persistent data, whether it is generated by Monte Carlo simulations or an experimental apparatus, to reduce code duplication and to ease the exchange of information between detector systems. MGDO also includes general-purpose analysis tools that can be used for the processing of measured or simulated digital signals. The MGDO design is based on the Object-Oriented programming paradigm and is very flexible, allowing for easy extension and customization of the components. The tools provided by the MGDO libraries are used by both GERDA and Majorana.

From antiferromagnetic insulator to correlated metal in pressurized and doped LaMnPO

Widespread adoption of superconducting technologies requires the discovery of new materials with enhanced properties, especially higher superconducting transition temperatures T$_{c}$. The unexpected discovery of high T$_{c}$ superconductivity in cuprates and in materials as diverse as heavy fermions, organic conductors, and endohedrally-doped fullerenes suggests that the highest T$_{c}$s occur when pressure or doping transform the localized and moment-bearing electrons in antiferromagnetic insulators into itinerant and weakly magnetic metals. The absence of this delocalization transition in Fe-based superconductors may limit their T$_{c}$s, but even larger T$_{c}$s may be possible in their isostructural Mn analogs, which are antiferromagnetic insulators like the cuprates. It is generally believed that prohibitively large pressures would be required to suppress the strong Hund's rule coupling in these Mn-based compounds, collapsing the insulating gap and enabling superconductivity. Indeed, no Mn-based compounds are known to be superconductors. The electronic structure calculations and x-ray diffraction measurements presented here challenge these long held beliefs, finding that only modest pressures are required to transform LaMnPO, isostructural to superconducting host LaFeAsO, from an insulating tetragonal structure with a large Mn moment to a gapless orthorhombic structure with a small Mn moment. Proximity to this electronic delocalization transition in LaMnPO results in a highly interacting metallic state, the familiar breeding ground of superconductivity.

Study of Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions with Atmospheric Neutrino Data in Super-Kamiokande I and II

In this paper we study non-standard neutrino interactions as an example of physics beyond the standard model using atmospheric neutrino data collected during the Super-Kamiokande I(1996-2001) and II(2003-2005) periods. We focus on flavor-changing-neutral-currents (FCNC), which allow neutrino flavor transitions via neutral current interactions, and effects which violate lepton non-universality (NU) and give rise to different neutral-current interaction-amplitudes for different neutrino flavors. We obtain a limit on the FCNC coupling parameter, varepsilon_{mu tau}, |varepsilon_{mu tau}|<1.1 x 10^{-2} at 90%C.L. and various constraints on other FCNC parameters as a function of the NU coupling, varepsilon_{e e}. We find no evidence of non-standard neutrino interactions in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric data.

Transverse Beam Spin Asymmetries at Backward Angles in Elastic Electron-Proton and Quasi-elastic Electron-Deuteron Scattering

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetries in elastic scattering of transversely polarized electrons from the proton, and performed the first measurement in quasi-elastic scattering on the deuteron, at backward angles (lab scattering angle of 108 degrees) for Q2 = 0.22 GeV^2/c^2 and 0.63 GeV^2/c^2 at beam energies of 362 MeV and 687 MeV, respectively. The asymmetry arises due to the imaginary part of the interference of the two-photon exchange amplitude with that of single photon exchange. Results for the proton are consistent with a model calculation which includes inelastic intermediate hadronic (piN) states. An estimate of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for the scattering from the neutron is made using a quasi-static deuterium approximation, and is also in agreement with theory.
