Thermoelectric effects in molecular quantum dots with contacts

We consider the steady-state thermoelectric transport through a vibrating molecular quantum dot that is contacted to macroscopic leads. For moderate electron-phonon interaction strength and comparable electronic and phononic timescales, we investigate the impact of the formation of a local polaron on the thermoelectric properties of the junction. We apply a variational Lang-Firsov transformation and solve the equations of motion in the Kadanoff-Baym formalism up to second order in the dot-lead coupling parameter. We calculate the thermoelectric current and voltage for finite temperature differences in the resonant and inelastic tunneling regimes. For a near resonant dot level, the formation of a local polaron can boost the thermoelectric effect because of the Franck-Condon blockade. The line shape of the thermoelectric voltage signal becomes asymmetrical due to the varying polaronic character of the dot state and in the nonlinear transport regime, vibrational signatures arise.

Phonon-affected steady-state transport through molecular quantum dots

We consider transport through a vibrating molecular quantum dot contacted to macroscopic leads acting as charge reservoirs. In the equilibrium and nonequilibrium regime, we study the formation of a polaron-like transient state at the quantum dot for all ratios of the dot-lead coupling to the energy of the local phonon mode. We show that the polaronic renormalization of the dot-lead coupling is a possible mechanism for negative differential conductance. Moreover, the effective dot level follows one of the lead chemical potentials to enhance resonant transport, causing novel features in the inelastic tunneling signal. In the linear response regime, we investigate the impact of the electron-phonon interaction on the thermoelectrical properties of the quantum dot device.

Spatial modeling of the 3D morphology of hybrid polymer-ZnO solar cells, based on electron tomography data

A spatial stochastic model is developed which describes the 3D nanomorphology of composite materials, being blends of two different (organic and inorganic) solid phases. Such materials are used, for example, in photoactive layers of hybrid polymer zinc oxide solar cells. The model is based on ideas from stochastic geometry and spatial statistics. Its parameters are fitted to image data gained by electron tomography (ET), where adaptive thresholding and stochastic segmentation have been used to represent morphological features of the considered ET data by unions of overlapping spheres. Their midpoints are modeled by a stack of 2D point processes with a suitably chosen correlation structure, whereas a moving-average procedure is used to add the radii of spheres. The model is validated by comparing physically relevant characteristics of real and simulated data, like the efficiency of exciton quenching, which is important for the generation of charges and their transport toward the electrodes.

Non-equilibrium transport through molecular junctions in the quantum regime

We consider a quantum dot, affected by a local vibrational mode and contacted to macroscopic leads, in the non-equilibrium steady-state regime. We apply a variational Lang-Firsov transformation and solve the equations of motion of the Green functions in the Kadanoff-Baym formalism up to second order in the interaction coefficients. The variational determination of the transformation parameter through minimization of the thermodynamic potential allows us to calculate the electron/polaron spectral function and conductance for adiabatic to anti-adiabatic phonon frequencies and weak to strong electron-phonon couplings. We investigate the qualitative impact of the quasi-particle renormalization on the inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy signatures and discuss the possibility of a polaron induced negative differential conductance. In the high-voltage regime we find that the polaron level follows the lead chemical potential to enhance resonant transport.

Transport through a vibrating quantum dot: Polaronic effects

We present a Green's function based treatment of the effects of electron-phonon coupling on transport through a molecular quantum dot in the quantum limit. Thereby we combine an incomplete variational Lang-Firsov approach with a perturbative calculation of the electron-phonon self energy in the framework of generalised Matsubara Green functions and a Landauer-type transport description. Calculating the ground-state energy, the dot single-particle spectral function and the linear conductance at finite carrier density, we study the low-temperature transport properties of the vibrating quantum dot sandwiched between metallic leads in the whole electron-phonon coupling strength regime. We discuss corrections to the concept of an anti-adiabatic dot polaron and show how a deformable quantum dot can act as a molecular switch.

Localized polarons and doorway vibrons in finite quantum structures

We consider transport through finite quantum systems such as quantum barriers, wells, dots or junctions, coupled to local vibrational modes in the quantal regime. As a generic model we study the Holstein-Hubbard Hamiltonian with site-dependent potentials and interactions. Depending on the barrier height to electron-phonon coupling strength ratio and the phonon frequency we find distinct opposed behaviors: Vibration-mediated tunneling or intrinsic localization of (bi)polarons. These regimes are strongly manifested in the density correlations, mobility, and optical response calculated by exact numerical techniques.

Spectral functions of the spinless Holstein model

An analytical approach to the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model is proposed, which is valid at finite charge-carrier concentrations. Spectral functions of charge carriers are computed on the basis of self-energy calculations. A generalization of the Lang-Firsov canonical transformation method is shown to provide an interpolation scheme between the extreme weak- and strong-coupling cases. The transformation depends on a variationally determined parameterthat characterizes the charge distribution across the polaron volume. The relation between the spectral functions of polarons and electrons, the latter corresponding to the photoemission spectrum, is derived. Particular attention is paid to the distinction between the coherent and incoherent parts of the spectra, and their evolution as a function of band filling and model parameters. Results are discussed and compared with recent numerical calculations for the many-polaron problem.

Photoemission spectra of many-polaron systems

The cross over from low to high carrier densities in a many-polaron system is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model, using unbiased numerical methods. Combining a novel quantum Monte Carlo approach and exact diagonalization, accurate results for the single-particle spectrum and the electronic kinetic energy on fairly large systems are obtained. A detailed investigation of the quality of the Monte Carlo data is presented. In the physically most important adiabatic intermediate electron-phonon coupling regime, for which no analytical results are available, we observe a dissociation of polarons with increasing band filling, leading to normal metallic behavior, while for parameters favoring small polarons, no such density-driven changes occur. The present work points towards the inadequacy of single-polaron theories for a number of polaronic materials such as the manganites.

Considerations on the quantum double-exchange Hamiltonian

Schwinger bosons allow for an advantageous representation of quantum double-exchange. We review this subject, comment on previous results, and address the transition to the semiclassical limit. We derive an effective fermionic Hamiltonian for the spin-dependent hopping of holes interacting with a background of local spins, which is used in a related publication within a two-phase description of colossal magnetoresistant manganites.

Competition of Zener and polaron phases in doped CMR manganites

Inspired by the strong experimental evidence for the coexistence of localized and itinerant charge carriers close to the metal-insulator transition in the ferromagnetic phase of colossal magnetoresistive manganese perovskites, for a theoretical description of the CMR transition we propose a two-phase scenario with percolative characteristics between equal-density polaron and Zener band-electron states. We find that the subtle balance between these two states with distinctly different electronic properties can be readily influenced by varying physical parameters, producing various ``colossal'' effects, such as the large magnetization and conductivity changes in the vicinity of the transition temperature.

Lattice polaron formation: Effects of non-screened electron-phonon interaction

We explore the quasiparticle properties of lattice polarons on the basis of a quite general electron-phonon Hamiltonian with a long-range displacement-type of interaction. To treat the dynamical quantum phonons without significant loss of accuracy we adapt an exact Lanczos diagonalization method and compute various static and dynamical quantities, such as the electron-lattice correlation function, the polaron band dispersion, the effective polaron mass, the kinetic energy, the single-particle spectral function, and the optical conductivity, on finite one-dimensional lattices for a wide range of model parameters. We compare the results with those obtained for the standard Holstein model with short-range electron-phonon interaction only.

Spin excitations in ferromagnetic manganites

An effective one-band Hamiltonian for colossal-magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites is constructed and the spin excitations are determined. Fitting the experimental data by the derived spin-wave dispersion gives an e_g -electron hopping amplitude of about 0.2 eV in agreement with LDA band calculations.

Spectral properties of the 2D Holstein polaron

The two-dimensional Holstein model is studied by means of direct Lanczos diagonalization preserving the full dynamics and quantum nature of phonons. We present numerical exact results for the single-particle spectral function, the polaronic quasiparticle weight, and the optical conductivity. The polaron band dispersion is derived both from exact diagonalization of small lattices and analytic calculation of the polaron self-energy.

Effective one-band electron-phonon Hamiltonian for nickel perovskites

Inspired by recent experiments on the Sr-doped nickelates, $La_{2-x}Sr_xNiO_4$, we propose a minimal microscopic model capable to describe the variety of the observed quasi-static charge/lattice modulations and the resulting magnetic and electronic-transport anomalies. Analyzing the motion of low-spin (s=1/2) holes in a high-spin (S=1) background as well as their their coupling to the in-plane oxygen phonon modes, we construct a sort of generalized Holstein t-J Hamiltonian for the $NiO_2$ planes, which contains besides the rather complex ``composite-hole'' hopping part non-local spin-spin and hole-phonon interaction terms.

Interplay of charge and spin correlations in nickel perovskites

Analyzing the motion of low--spin $(s=1/2)$ holes in a high--spin $(S=1)$ background, we derive a sort of generalized t--J Hamiltonian for the $\rm NiO_2$ planes of Sr--doped nickelates. In addition to the rather complex carrier--spin and spin--spin couplings we take into account the coupling of the doped holes to in--plane oxygen breathing modes by a Holstein--type interaction term. Because of strong magnetic confinement effects the holes are nearly entirely prelocalized and the electron--phonon coupling becomes much more effective in forming polarons than in the isostructural cuprates. In the light of recent experiments on $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xNiO_4$ we discuss how the variety of the observed transport and charge/spin--ordering phenomena can be qualitatively understood in terms of our model Hamiltonian.
