Flavor issues in the Higgs sector

We discuss the conditions under which the flavor structure of SUSY model induces, either radiatively or through mixing, new flavor-violating interactions in the Higgs sector. The radiative flavor mediation mechanism is illustrated using the minimal SUSY extension of the SM (MSSM) with generic trilinear A-terms, and applied to evaluate the corrections to Lepton Flavor-Violating (LFV) and Flavor-Conserving (LFC) Higgs vertices. Flavor mediation through mixing is discussed within the context of an $E_6$-inspired multi-Higgs model, suplemented with an abelian flavor symmetry. Tevatron and LHC can probe the flavor structure of these models through the detection of the LFV Higgs mode h->tau mu, while NLC can perform high-precision tests of the LFC mode h ->tau+ tau-.

A More Flavored Higgs boson in Supersymmetric models

A More flavored Higgs boson arises when the flavor structure encoded in SUSY extensions of the SM is transmited to the Higgs sector. The flavor-Higgs transmition mechanism can have a radiative or mixing origin, as it is illustrated with several examples, and can produce interesting Higgs signatures that can be probed at future high-energy colliders. Within the MSSM, the flavor mediation mechanism can be of radiative type, as it is realized trhough gaugino-slepton loops, which transmit the flavor structture of the soft-breaking sector to the Higgs bosons. In particular we focus on evaluating the contributions from the general trilinear terms to the lepton flavor violating Higgs (LFV) vertices. On the other hand, as an example of flavor mediation through mixing, we discuss an E_6 inspired multi-Higgs model, with an abelian flavor symmetry, where LFV as well as lepton flavor conserving Higgs effects are found to arise, though in this case at tree-level. We find that Tevatron and LHC can provide information on the flavor structure of these models through the detection of the LFV higgs mode h-> tau+mu, while NLC can perform high-precision measurements of the LFC mode h-> tau tau.

Higgs production at hadron colliders as a probe of new physics

The coupling of Higgs with gauge bosons can receive non-decoupling corrections due to heavy quanta. Deviation from the SM predictions are described by a set of parameters e_V, which can be related to the parameters S,T. The Higgs production by gluon fusion can be used to probe e_g, whereas its decays into WW can probe e_W. The resulting bounds may imply the exclusion of heavy particles, such as additional standard or mirror families, chiral colored sextets and octet quarks. Within the MSSM, we also find that gluon fusion is a sensitive probe for the spectrum of squark masses.

What heavy quanta bounds could be inferred from a Higgs discovery?

The Higgs couplings can receive non-decoupling corrections due to heavy quanta, and deviations from the SM can be used to test its presence. The possible Higgs signal recently reported at LEP, with mh=115 GeV, severely constrains the presence of heavy quanta, such as a heavy fourth family. At Tevatron, the Higgs production by gluon fusion, followed by the decay h -> WW*, can also be used to probe the existence of heavy colored particles, including additional families, chiral sextet and octet quarks. Within the MSSM, we also find that gluon fusion is a sensitive probe for the squark spectrum.

Can Supersymmetric Loops Correct the Fermion Mass Relations in SU(5)?

We investigate three different possibilities for improving the fermion mass relations that arise in grand unified theories (GUTs). Each scenario relies on supersymmetric loop effects alone, without modifying the naive Yukawa unification. First, we consider A-terms that follow the usual proportionality condition. In this case SUSY effects can improve the mass relations, but not completely. Interestingly, imposing Yukawa coupling unification for two families greatly constrains the range of parameters in the MSSM. Secondly, we employ a new ansatz for the tri-linear A-terms that satisfies all experimental and vacuum stability bounds, and can successfully modify the mass relations. Finally, we investigate the use of general (non-proportional) A-terms, with large off-diagonal entries. In this case flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) data present an important constraint. We do not pretend to present a complete, motivated theory of fermion masses. Rather this paper can be viewed as an existence proof, serving to show that Yukawa coupling unification can occur even within the framework of minimal GUTs.

FCNC and non-standard soft-breaking terms in weak-scale Supersymmetry

We study the inclusion of non-standard soft-breaking terms in the minimal SUSY extension of the SM, considering it as a model of weak-scale SUSY. These terms modify the sfermion mass matrices, which can induce new sources of flavour violation. Bounds on the new soft parameters can be estimated from current data. The results are then applied to evaluate FCNC top decay t -> c + hi (hi= h,H,A). Implications of complex soft parameters for CP violation are also addressed.

Probing lepton flavour violation with Higgs boson decays H-> li+lj

We evaluate the lepton flavour violating (LFV) decays of HIggs bosons H->li+lj in several extensions of the SM, including both the effective lagrangian approach and several specific models. For the effective lagrangian case, we focus on dimension-six operators that induce LFV vertices for the Higgs and or Z bosons. For those operators whose coefficients can not be constrained by present data, LFV Higgs decays can have a B.R. of order 0.1-0.01. Those cases when current bounds apply, induce strong bounds for e-mu transitions, and the b.r. for H->e mu is of order 10^-9; however H->tau mu, tau e, can have B.R. of order 0.1. In the case of the two-higgs doublet model III, we obtain a similar B.R. for H-> tau mu, tau e, whereas in the SM with massive neutrinos and the minimal SUSY-SM the corresponding B.R. are very suppressed.

A study of Schwinger-Dyson Equations for Yukawa and Wess-Zumino Models

We study Schwinger-Dyson equation for fermions in Yukawa and Wess-Zumino models, in terms of dynamical mass generation and the wavefunction renormalization function. In the Yukawa model with $γ_5$-type interaction between scalars and fermions, we find a critical coupling in the quenched approximation above which fermions acquire dynamical mass. This is shown to be true beyond the bare 3-point vertex approximation. In the Wess-Zumino model, there is a neat cancellation of terms leading to no dynamical mass for fermions. We comment on the conditions under which these results are general beyond the rainbow approximation and also on the ones under which supersymmetry is preserved and the scalars as well do not acquire mass. The results are in accordance with the non-renormalization theorem at least to order $α$ in perturbation theory. In both the models, we also evaluate the wavefunction renormalization function, analytically in the neighbourhood of the critical coupling and numerically, away from it.

Anomalies and decoupling of charginos and neutralinos in the MSSM

We study the contribution of charginos and neutralinos of the Minimal SUSY extension of the Standard model (MSSM) to the 1-loop vertices ZAA, ZZA, ZZZ, and examine the related cancellation of anomalies. It is found that when the SUSY parameter μsatisfies |μ| >> M,M', m_W, the couplings of charginos and neutralinos with the gauge bosons become purely vectorial, and then their contribution to the amplitudes for ZAA, ZZA and ZZZ vanish, which implies that this sector of the MSSM does not generate a Wess-Zumino term. We evaluate also the contribution of charginos and neutralinos to the ρparameter, and find that ρ=0 in the large-μlimit.

Constraints on the parameters of the Left Right Mirror Model

We study some phenomenological constraints on the parameters of a left right model with mirror fermions (LRMM) that solves the strong CP problem. In particular, we evaluate the contribution of mirror neutrinos to the invisible Z decay width (Γ_Z^{inv}), and we find that the present experimental value on Γ_Z^{inv}, can be used to place an upper bound on the Z-Z' mixing angle that is consistent with limits obtained previously from other low-energy observables. In this model the charged fermions that correspond to the standard model (SM) mix with its mirror counterparts. This mixing, simultaneously with the Z-Z' one, leads to modifications of the Γ(Z --> f \bar{f}) decay width. By comparing with LEP data, we obtain bounds on the standard-mirror lepton mixing angles. We also find that the bottom quark mixing parameters can be chosen to fit the experimental values of R_b, and the resulting values for the Z-Z' mixing angle do not agree with previous bounds. However, this disagreement disappears if one takes the more recent ALEPH data.
