Variability of the transitional T Tauri star T Chamaeleontis

We characterize the physical properties of T Chamaeleontis, a transitional T Tauri star showing UX Ori-type variability, and of its associated disc, and probe possible effects of disc clearing processes. Different spectral diagnostics are examined, based on a rich collection of optical high- and low-resolution spectra. We determine radial and projected rotational velocities, and measure equivalent widths of the Li I (6708 A) line and of the most prominent emission lines (e.g. Ha, Hb and [OI] 6300A); we analyse shape changes of photospheric lines via bisector-method, while variability in Ha and Hb is inspected through line-profile correlation matrices. The strength of the Ha and Hb emission is highly variable and well correlated with that of the [OI] lines, as well as with Av variations of over three magnitudes. Variations up to nearly 10 km/s in the radial velocity of the star are measured on analogous time-scale, but with no apparent periodicity. SED modelling confirms the existence of a gap in the disc. Variable circumstellar extinction is pointed out as responsible for the conspicuous variations observed in the stellar continuum flux and for concomitant changes in the emission features by contrast effect. Clumpy structures, incorporating large dust grains and orbiting the star within a few tenths of AU, obscure episodically the star and, eventually, part of the inner circumstellar zone, while the bulk of the hydrogen lines emitting zone and outer low-density wind region traced by the [OI] remain unaffected. Coherently with this scenario, the detected radial velocity changes are also explainable in terms of clumpy materials transiting and partially obscuring the star.

White dwarfs in the Capodimonte deep field

In this article we describe the search for white dwarfs (WDs) in the multi-band photometric data of the Capodimonte deep field survey. The WD candidates were selected through the V-R_C vs B-V color-color diagram. For two bright objects, the WD nature has been confirmed spectroscopically, and the atmospheric parameters (Teff and logg) have been determined. We have computed synthetic stellar population models for the observed field and the expected number of white dwarfs agrees with the observations. The possible contamination by turn-off and horizontal branch halo stars has been estimated. The quasar (QSO) contamination has been determined by comparing the number of WD candidates in different color bins with state-of-the-art models and previous observations. The WD space density is measured at different distances from the Sun. The total contamination (non-degenerate stars + QSOs) in our sample is estimated to be around 30%. This work should be considered a small experiment in view of more ambitious projects to be performed in the coming years in larger survey contexts.

Photometric/spectroscopic analyses and magnetic activity in young late-type stars

We present the work in progress of a study based on photometric and spectroscopic observations of young Weak-line T Tauri and Post T Tauri stars just attiving on the Zero Age Main Sequence. This study is part of a project based on high-resolution spectra obtained with FOCES@CAHA (Spain) and SARG@TNG (Spain) and contemporaneous photometry performed at Catania (Italy) and Ege (Turkey) observatories. The main aim is to investigate the topology of magnetic active regions at photospheric and chromospheric levels in young single stars. Since our targets are slow rotators (vsini < 25 km/s), corresponding to rotation periods larger than about 2 days, we are able to apply the spectroscopic technique based on line-depth ratio for the measure of the photospheric temperature modulation. These stars, possible members of Stellar Kinematic Groups, display emission cores in the CaII H&K and IRT lines, as well as a conspicuous filling-in of the Halpha core. Moreover, we detect absorption of the HeI-D3 line, coming from the upper chromospheric layers, derive the lithium abundance (age indicator), and measure the rotational and radial velocities. We find a clear rotational modulation, due to photospheric spots, both in the light and the temperature curves. The Halpha and the CaII-IRT emissions display a fair variation correlated with the rotation. Finally, we are developing a spot/plage model to reproduce the data and derive the spot parameters (namely, filling factor and temperature) and to recover information about the chromospheric inhomogeneities (flux contrast and filling factor). This study is very important to explore the correlations between global stellar parameters (e.g., surface gravity, effective temperature) and spot/plage characteristics in stars with different activity level and evolutionary stage.

Magnetic activity in the young star SAO 51891

We present preliminary results on a study based on contemporaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations of the young K0-1V star SAO 51891. We find that SAO 51891, a possible member of the Local Association, shows emission cores in the CaII H&K and fillings in the Halpha and CaII Infra-Red Triplet (IRT) lines. Moreover, we detect absorption lines of HeI-D3 and LiI and measure a v sini of 19 km/s. A clear rotational modulation of both the light and the photospheric temperature, due to photospheric spots, has been detected. The net Halpha chromospheric emission does not show any detectable variation, while the CaII IRT emission displays a fair modulation.

The Galactic Halo density distribution from photometric survey data: results of a pilot study

Our goal is to recover the Galactic Halo spatial density by means of field stars. To this aim, we apply a new technique to the Capodimonte Deep Field (OACDF, Alcala' et al. 2004), as a pilot study in view of the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) stellar projects. Considering the unique chance to collect deep and wide-field photometry with the VST, our method may represent a useful tool towards a definitive mapping of the Galactic Halo. In the framework of synthetic stellar populations, turn-off stars are used to reconstruct the spatial density. The determination of the space density is achieved by comparing the data with synthetic color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). The only assumptions involve the IMF, age and metallicity of the synthetic halo population. Stars are randomly placed in the solid angle. The contributions of the various Monte Carlo distributions (with a step of 4 kpc) along the line of sight are simultaneously varied to reproduce the observed CMD. Our result on the space density is consistent with a power-law exponent n~3 over a range of Galactocentric distances from 8 to 40 kpc.

Recent results on Pre-main sequence delta Scuti stars

Intermediate mass Pre-main sequence stars (1.5 $M_{\odot}< M < 5M_{\odot}$) cross the instability strip on their way to the main sequence. They are therefore expected to be pulsating in a similar way as the $δ$ Scuti stars. In this contribution we present the status of the observational studies of pulsations in these stars with special emphasis on recent results from our group. The prospects for future investigations of these objects from the ground and from space are discussed.

CSL-1: a chance projection effect or serendipitous discovery of a gravitational lens induced by a cosmic string?

CSL-1 (Capodimonte--Sternberg--Lens Candidate, No.1) is an extragalactic double source detected in the OAC-DF (Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte - Deep Field). It can be interpreted either as the chance alignment of two identical galaxies at z=0.46 or as the first case of gravitational lensing by a cosmic string. Extensive modeling shows in fact that cosmic strings are the only type of lens which (at least at low angular resolution) can produce undistorted double images of a background source. We propose an experimentum crucis to disentangle between these two possible explanations. If the lensing by a cosmic string should be confirmed, it would provide the first measurements of energy scale of symmetry breaking and of the energy scale of Grand Unified Theory (GUT).

Data reduction and astrometry strategies for wide-field images: an application to the Capodimonte Deep Field

The Capodimonte Deep Field (OACDF) is a multi-colour imaging survey on two 0.5x0.5 square degree fields performed in the BVRI bands and in six medium-band filters (700 - 900 nm) with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) at the ESO 2.2 m telescope at La Silla, Chile. In this contribution the adopted strategies for the OACDF data reduction are discussed. Preliminary scientific results of the survey are also presented.
