The Statistic Analysis of GeV Spectral Breaks in Bright Gamma-Ray FSRQs

We present the statistic results of GeV spectral breaks of bright gamma-ray flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) in the energy range of 0.1-10 GeV based on New Pass 8 date of the Large Area Telescope abroad on Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. We have fitted the 15-year average gamma-ray spectra of 755 FSRQs by using both a broken power-law (BPL) and the Logarithmic Parabolas (LP) models, and obtained 87 bright gamma-ray FSRQs with their integrated photon fluxes greater than $2.16\times 10^{-8}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. From our results, the FSRQ population shows similar preferences for both the BPL and LP models in gamma-ray spectral fitting and clustering analysis suggests that BPL-preferred and LP-preferred FSRQs belong to the same category. Our results indicate that GeV spectral breaks in bright gamma-ray FSRQs are located at $\rm 2.90\pm1.92$ GeV in the rest frame, and the observed change in photon index is $\rm Δγ=0.45 \pm 0.19$, which is consistent with the expected value for a cooling break of electrons scattering seed photons.

Classifications of Fermi-LAT unassociated sources in multiple machine learning methods

The classifications of Fermi-LAT unassociated sources are studied using multiple machine learning (ML) methods. The update data from 4FGL-DR3 are divided into high Galactic latitude (HGL, Galactic latitude $|b|>10^\circ$) and low Galactic latitude (LGL, $|b|\le10^\circ$) regions. In the HGL region, a voting ensemble of four binary ML classifiers achieves a 91$\%$ balanced accuracy. In the LGL region, an additional Bayesian-Gaussian (BG) model with three parameters is introduced to eliminate abnormal soft spectrum AGNs from the training set and ML-identified AGN candidates, a voting ensemble of four ternary ML algorithms reach an 81$\%$ balanced accuracy. And then, a catalog of Fermi-LAT all-sky unassociated sources is constructed. Our classification results show that (i) there are 1037 AGN candidates and 88 pulsar candidates with a balanced accuracy of $0.918 \pm 0.029$ in HGL region, which are consistent with those given in previous all-sky ML approaches; and (ii) there are 290 AGN-like candidates, 135 pulsar-like candidates, and 742 other-like candidates with a balanced accuracy of $0.815 \pm 0.027$ in the LGL region, which are different from those in previous all-sky ML approaches. Additionally, different training sets and class weights were tested for their impact on classifier accuracy and predicted results. The findings suggest that while different training approaches can yield similar model accuracy, the predicted numbers across different categories can vary significantly. Thus, reliable evaluation of the predicted results is deemed crucial in the ML approach for Fermi-LAT unassociated sources.

An emergent quasi-2D metallic state derived from the Mott insulator framework

Recent quasi-2D systems with judicious exploitation of the atomic monolayer or few-layer architecture exhibit unprecedented physical properties that challenge the conventional wisdom on the condensed matter physics. Here we show that the infinite layer SrCuO2 (SCO), a topical cuprate Mott insulator in the bulk form, can manifest an unexpected metallic state in the quasi-2D limit when SCO is grown on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. Hard x-ray core-level photoemission spectra demonstrate a definitive Fermi level that resembles the hole doped metal. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy also reveals features analogous to those of a hole doped Mott insulator. Based on these results, we conclude that the hole doping does not occur at the interfaces between SCO and STO; instead, it comes from the transient layers between the chain type and the planar type structures within the SCO slab. The present work reveals a novel metallic state in the infinite layer SCO and invites further examination to elucidate the spatial extent of this state.

Frobenius-Perron theory of representation-directed algebras

We study the Frobenius-Perron dimension of representation-directed algebras and quotient algebras of canonical algebras of type ADE, prove that the Frobenius-Perron dimension of a representation-directed algebra is always zero and the Frobenius-Perron dimension of a quotient algebra of canonical algebras of type ADE is 0 or 1. Moreover, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for a quotient algebra of a canonical algebra of type ADE under which its Frobenius-Perron dimension is 0.

Frobenius-Perron theory of the bound quiver algebras containing loops

The spectral radius of matrix, also known as Frobenius-Perron dimension, is a useful tool for studying linear algebras and plays an important role in the classification of the representation categories of algebras. In this paper, we study the Frobenius-Perron theory of the representation categories of bound quiver algebras containing loops, find a way to calculate the Frobenius-Perron dimension of these algebras when they satisfy the commutativity condition of loops. As an application, we prove that the Frobenius-Perron dimension of the representation category of a modified ADE bounded quiver algebra is equal to the maximum number of loops at a vertex. Finally, we point out that there also exists infinite dimensional algebras whose Frobenius-Perron dimension is equal to the maximal number of loops by giving an example.

Frobenius-Perron theory for projective schemes

The Frobenius-Perron theory of an endofunctor of a $\Bbbk$-linear category (recently introduced in [CG]) provides new invariants for abelian and triangulated categories. Here we study Frobenius-Perron type invariants for derived categories of commutative and noncommutative projective schemes. In particular, we calculate the Frobenius-Perron dimension for domestic and tubular weighted projective lines, define Frobenius-Perron generalizations of Calabi-Yau and Kodaira dimensions, and provide examples. We apply this theory to the derived categories associated to certain Artin-Schelter regular and finite-dimensional algebras.

Low temperature magnetic properties of Nd2Ru2O7

We present magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of polycrystalline Nd2Ru2O7 down to 0.4 K. Three anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility measurements at 146, 21 and 1.8 K are associated with an antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru4+ moments, a weak ferromagnetic signal attributed to a canting of the Ru4+ and Nd3+ moments, and a long-range-ordering of the Nd3+ moments, respectively. The long-range order of the Nd3+ moments was observed in all the measurements, indicating that the ground state of the compound is not a spin glass. The magnetic entropy of Rln2 accumulated up to 5 K, suggests the Nd3+ has a doublet ground state. Lattice distortions accompany the transitions, as revealed by neutron diffraction measurements, and in agreement with earlier synchrotron x-ray studies. The magnetic moment of the Nd3+ ion at 0.4 K is estimated to be 1.54(2)μB and the magnetic structure is all-in all-out as determined by our neutron diffraction measurements.

Performance of information criteria used for model selection of Hawkes process models of financial data

We test three common information criteria (IC) for selecting the order of a Hawkes process with an intensity kernel that can be expressed as a mixture of exponential terms. These processes find application in high-frequency financial data modelling. The information criteria are Akaike's information criterion (AIC), the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and the Hannan-Quinn criterion (HQ). Since we work with simulated data, we are able to measure the performance of model selection by the success rate of the IC in selecting the model that was used to generate the data. In particular, we are interested in the relation between correct model selection and underlying sample size. The analysis includes realistic sample sizes and parameter sets from recent literature where parameters were estimated using empirical financial intra-day data. We compare our results to theoretical predictions and similar empirical findings on the asymptotic distribution of model selection for consistent and inconsistent IC.

Antiferromagnetism with divalent Eu in EuNi$_5$As$_3$

We have successfully synthesized single crystals of EuNi$_5$As$_3$ using a flux method and we present a comprehensive study of the physical properties using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. EuNi$_5$As$_3$ undergoes two close antiferromagnetic transitions at respective temperatures of $T_{N1}$ = 7.2 K and $T_{N2}$ = 6.4 K, which are associated with the Eu$^{2+}$ moments. Both transitions are suppressed upon applying a field and we map the temperature-field phase diagrams for fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the easy $a$ axis. XAS measurements reveal that the Eu is strongly divalent, with very little temperature dependence, indicating the localized Eu$^{2+}$ nature of EuNi$_5$As$_3$, with a lack of evidence for heavy fermion behavior.

Selective interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu spins in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{7-x}$ grown on top of La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ MnO$_3$

Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between the in-plane Cu spins in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) superconductor when it is grown on top of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ MnO$_3$ (LCMO) manganite layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such that it is only observed in bilayers with MnO_2but not with La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ interfacial termination. Such contrasting behaviors, we propose, are due to distinct energetic of CuO chain and CuO$_2$ plane at the La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ and MnO$_2$ terminated interfaces respectively, therefore influencing the transfer of spin-polarized electrons from manganite to cuprate differently. Our findings suggest that the superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers with proper interfacial engineering can be good candidates for searching the theorized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in cuprates and studying the competing quantum orders in highly correlated electron systems.

Crossover from a heavy fermion to intermediate valence state in noncentrosymmetric Yb2Ni12(P,As)7

We report measurements of the physical properties and electronic structure of the hexagonal compounds Yb2Ni12Pn7 (Pn = P, As) by measuring the electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat and partial fluorescence yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy (PFY-XAS). These demonstrate a crossover upon reducing the unit cell volume, from an intermediate valence state in Yb2Ni12As7 to a heavy-fermion paramagnetic state in Yb2Ni12P7, where the Yb is nearly trivalent. Application of pressure to Yb2Ni12P7 suppresses T_FL, the temperature below which Fermi liquid behavior is recovered, suggesting the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) under pressure. However, while there is little change in the Yb valence of Yb2Ni12P7 up to 30 GPa, there is a strong increase for Yb2Ni12As7 under pressure, before a near constant value is reached. These results indicate that any magnetic QCP in this system is well separated from strong valence fluctuations. The pressure dependence of the valence and lattice parameters of Yb2Ni12As7 are compared and at 1 GPa, there is an anomaly in the unit cell volume as well as a change in the slope of the Yb valence, indicating a correlation between structural and electronic changes.

Evidence for two distinct superconducting phases in EuBiS$_2$F under pressure

We present a pressure study of the electrical resistivity, AC magnetic susceptibility and powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) of the newly discovered BiS$_2$-based superconductor EuBiS$_2$F. At ambient pressure, EuBiS$_2$F shows an anomaly in the resistivity at around $T_0\approx 280$ K and a superconducting transition at $T_c\approx 0.3$ K. Upon applying hydrostatic pressure, there is little change in $T_0$ but the amplitude of the resistive anomaly is suppressed, whereas there is a dramatic enhancement of $T_c$ from 0.3 K to about 8.6 K at a critical pressure of $p_c$ $\approx{1.4}$ GPa. XRD measurements confirm that this enhancement of $T_c$ coincides with a structural phase transition from a tetragonal phase ($P4/nmm$) to a monoclinic phase ($P2_1$/m), which is similar to that observed in isostructural LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. Our results suggest the presence of two different superconducting phases with distinct crystal structures in EuBiS$_2$F, which may be a general property of this family of BiS$_2$-based superconductors.

Doping evolution of Zhang-Rice singlet spectral weight: a comprehensive examination by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

The total spectral weight \textit{S} of the emergent low-energy quasipaticles in high-temperature superconductors is explored by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In order to examine the applicability of the Hubbard model, regimes that cover from zero doping to overdoping are investigated. In contrast to mean field theory, we found that \textit{S} deviates from linear dependence on the doping level \textit{p}. The slope of \textit{S} versus \textit{p} changes continuously throughout the whole doping range with no sign of saturation up to \textit{p} = 0.23. Therefore, the picture of Zhang-Rice singlet remains intact within the most prominent doping regimes of HTSC's.

Spin-state transition, magnetism and local crystal structure in Eu_{1-x}Ca_xCoO_{3-d}

The doping series Eu1-xCaxCoO3-d provides a rather peculiar way to study the spin-state transition in cobalt-based complex oxides since partial substitution of Eu3+ ions by Ca2+ ions does not increase the mean valence state of cobalt but is accompanied by appearance of oxygen vacancies in the ratio d \sim x/2. In the parent compound EuCoO3, the low spin (LS)-high spin (HS) transition takes place at temperatures so high that the chemical decomposition prevents its direct observation. The substitution of Eu3+ for Ca2+ in this system shifts the LS-HS transition to lower temperatures. The energy gap associated with this transition in octahedrally-coordinated Co3+ ions changes from 1940 K in EuCoO3 to 1540 K in Eu0.9Ca0.1CoO2.95 and 1050 K in Eu0.8Ca0.2CoO2.9. Besides, each O2- vacancy reduces the local coordination of two neighboring Co3+ ions from octahedral to pyramidal thereby locally creating magnetically active sites which couple into dimers. These dimers at low temperatures form another gapped magnetic system with very different energy scale, D~3 K, on the background of intrinsically non-magnetic lattice of octahedrally-coordinated low-spin Co3+ ions.

Dynamical spectral weight in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

The comprehensive study of the temperature dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals a dynamical spectral weight $α$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO). Large spectral weight changes for both the Upper Hubbard band and the Zhang-Rice band due to dynamics of holes are experimentally found in the underdoped regime. A large value of $α\geq 0.3$ is indispensable to describing XAS of YBCO with the conservation of states. The value of $α$ is linearly proportional to the pseudogap temperature in the underdoped regime, but becomes smaller as the doping level goes to the undoped limit. Our results clearly indicate that the pseudogap is related to the double occupancy and originates from bands in higher energies.

Possible coexistence of s-wave and unconventional pairing in Na_xCoO_2-yH2O:a new insight from impurity effects

To shed light on the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in Na_xCoO_2-yH_2O, the Mn doping effects are studied. X-ray absorption spectroscopy verifies that the doped Mn impurities occupy the Co sites and are with a valance close to +4. Impurity scattering by Mn is in the unitary limit that, however, does not lead to strong Tc suppression. This absence of the strong impurity effects on T_c is not consistent with the simple picture of a sign-changing order parameter. Coexistence of the s-wave and unconventional order parameters is proposed to reconcile all existing experiments and has been directly observed by the specific heat experiments.

Electronic structure and transport properties of La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), optical reflectance spectroscopy, and the Hall effect measurements were used to investigate the electronic structure in La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3 thin films (LCeMO). The XAS results are consistent with those obtained from LDA+U calculations. In that the doping of Ce has shifted up the Fermi level and resulted in marked shrinkage of hole pockets originally existing in La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 (LCaMO). The Hall measurements indicate that in LCeMO the carriers are still displaying the characteristics of holes as LDA+U calculations predict. Analyses of the optical reflectance spectra evidently disapprove the scenario that the present LCeMO might have been dominated by the La-deficient phases.

Effect of Sr-for-Ba isovalent substitution on the local structure, hole distribution and magnetic irreversibility of Cu(Ba,Sr)2YbCu2O6.95(2)

The effect of Sr(II)-for-Ba(II) isovalent substitution on the magnetic irreversibility field (Hirr) of Cu(Ba1-ySry)2YbCu2O6.95(2) (Cu-1212) sample series (y = 0 ~ 0.4) is studied to reveal guiding rules for tailoring the intrinsic Hirr characteristics of high-Tc superconductors. It has been assumed that substitution of the larger alkaline earth cation, Ba(II), by the smaller, Sr(II), might improve the Hirr characteristics as a consequence of the decrease in the thickness of nonsuperconductive blocking block (BB). However, results of the present work show that Sr substitution rather depresses the Hirr characteristics of the Cu-1212-phase superconductors even though the thickness of BB decreases. Both the amount of excess oxygen and the overall positive charge are confirmed to remain constant upon the Sr substitution by wet-chemical and XANES analyses, respectively. However, from neutron diffraction data analysis it is found that Sr substitution breaks the conductive CuO chains in BB by shifting part of the excess oxygen atoms from the characteristic b-axis lattice site to the a-axis site. This is believed to decrease the concentration of mobile holes in the BB, as supported by the results of TEP measurements. The lower Hirr(T) lines of the Sr-substituted samples may thus be attributed to the lower concentration of mobile holes in BB.
