Physical Results from 2+1 Flavor Domain Wall QCD and SU(2) Chiral Perturbation Theory

We have simulated QCD using 2+1 flavors of domain wall quarks on a $(2.74 {\rm fm})^3$ volume with an inverse lattice scale of $a^{-1} = 1.729(28)$ GeV. The up and down (light) quarks are degenerate in our calculations and we have used four values for the ratio of light quark masses to the strange (heavy) quark mass in our simulations: 0.217, 0.350, 0.617 and 0.884. We have measured pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants, the kaon bag parameter $B_K$ and vector meson couplings. We have used SU(2) chiral perturbation theory, which assumes only the up and down quark masses are small, and SU(3) chiral perturbation theory to extrapolate to the physical values for the light quark masses. While next-to-leading order formulae from both approaches fit our data for light quarks, we find the higher order corrections for SU(3) very large, making such fits unreliable. We also find that SU(3) does not fit our data when the quark masses are near the physical strange quark mass. Thus, we rely on SU(2) chiral perturbation theory for accurate results. We use the masses of the $Ω$ baryon, and the $π$ and $K$ mesons to set the lattice scale and determine the quark masses. We then find $f_π= 124.1(3.6)_{\rm stat}(6.9)_{\rm syst} {\rm MeV}$, $f_K = 149.6(3.6)_{\rm stat}(6.3)_{\rm syst} {\rm MeV}$ and $f_K/f_π= 1.205(0.018)_{\rm stat}(0.062)_{\rm syst}$. Using non-perturbative renormalization to relate lattice regularized quark masses to RI-MOM masses, and perturbation theory to relate these to $\bar{\rm MS}$ we find $ m_{ud}^{\bar{\rm MS}}(2 {\rm GeV}) = 3.72(0.16)_{\rm stat}(0.33)_{\rm ren}(0.18)_{\rm syst} {\rm MeV}$ and $m_{s}^{\bar{\rm MS}}(2 {\rm GeV}) = 107.3(4.4)_{\rm stat}(9.7)_{\rm ren}(4.9)_{\rm syst} {\rm MeV}$.

Elastic s-wave scattering phase shifts and |Vub| from lattice calculations of form factors for exclusive semileptonic decays

Omnes dispersion relations make a connection between form factors for exclusive semileptonic decays and phase shifts in the corresponding elastic scattering channels. We describe two applications. In the first, we use lattice form factor calculations to learn about phase shifts in elastic s-wave isospin-1/2 channels for K pi, B pi, D pi and D K scattering. The aim of the second application is to make the determination of the CKM matrix element magnitude |Vub| from exclusive semileptonic B to pi decays competitive with that from inclusive decays. Here we use many subtractions in an Omnes dispersion relation to motivate a simple fitting function, allowing data to constrain the q^2 shape of the differential decay rate and theory, primarily lattice results, to provide normalisation via form factor values.

Hadronic form factors in Lattice QCD at small and vanishing momentum transfer

The introduction of partially twisted boundary conditions allows weak and electromagnetic form factors to be evaluated at specified values of the hadronic momenta (and hence momentum transfers) in lattice simulations. We present and demonstrate this technique for the computation of the K->pi semileptonic form factor at zero momentum transfer and for the electromagnetic form factor of the pion at arbitrarily small momentum transfers. These exploratory computations are carried out in full QCD with 3 flavours of sea quarks, but with only two values of m_u=m_d which limits our ability to perform the chiral extrapolations. The results should therefore be viewed primarily as a demonstration of the feasibility of the method. For the K-> pi form factor we compare the new technique to the conventional approach and for the pion form factor we assess our results for very small momentum transfer with the help of chiral perturbation theory.

Quark model study of the semileptonic B -> pi decay

The semileptonic decay B->pi is studied starting from a simple quark model and taking into account the effect of the B* resonance. A novel, multiply subtracted, Omnès dispersion relation has been implemented to extend the predictions of the quark model to all physical q^2 values. We find |V_{ub}|=0.0034 +/- 0.0003(exp.)+/- 0.0007(theory), in good agreement with experiment.

Study of the semileptonic decays B->pi, D->pi and D->K

The semileptonic decay B->pi is studied starting from a simple quark model that takes into account the effect of the B* resonance. A novel, multiply subtracted, Omnes dispersion relation has been implemented to extend the predictions of the quark model to all q^2 values accesible in the physical decay. By comparison to the experimental data, we extract |V_ub|=0.0034 +/- 0.0003(exp.) +/- 0.0007(theory). As a further test of the model, we have also studied D->pi and D->K decays for which we get good agreement with experiment.

The First Moment of the Kaon Distribution Amplitude from N_f=2+1 Domain Wall Fermions

We present a lattice computation of the first moment of the kaon's leading-twist distribution amplitude. We use ensembles with 2+1 dynamical flavours of domain wall fermions and the Iwasaki gauge action from the RBC and UKQCD joint dataset. We observe the expected chiral behaviour and obtain <ξ>(2GeV)=3/5a_K^1(2GeV)=0.032(3), which agrees very well with other results obtained using QCD sum-rules and the recent lattice result from the UKQCD/QCDSF collaboration.

A Lattice Computation of the First Moment of the Kaon's Distribution Amplitude

We present a lattice computation of the first moment of the kaon's leading-twist distribution amplitude. The results were computed using ensembles with 2+1 dynamical flavours with the domain wall fermion action and Iwasaki gauge action from the RBC and UKQCD joint dataset. The first moment is non-zero because of SU(3)-breaking effects, and we find that we are able to measure these effects very clearly. We observe the expected chiral behaviour and finally obtain <ξ>(2GeV) = 3/5*a_K^1(2GeV) = 0.032(3), which agrees very well with results obtained using sum-rules, but with a significantly smaller error.

Semileptonic $B\to π$ Decays from an Omnès Improved Nonrelativistic Constituent Quark Model

The semileptonic $B\to πl^+ ν_l$ decay is studied starting from a simple quark model which includes the influence of the $B^*$ pole. To extend the predictions of a nonrelativistic constituent quark model from its region of applicability near $q^2_{\rm max}=(m_B-m_π)^2$ to all $q^2$ values accessible in the physical decay, we use a novel multiply-subtracted Omnès dispersion relation, which considerably diminishes the form factor dependence on the elastic $πB \to πB$ scattering amplitudes at high energies. By comparison to the experimental branching fraction we extract $|V_{ub}| = 0.0034 \pm 0.0003 ({\rm exp}) \pm 0.0007 ({\rm theory})$. To further test our framework, we also study $D\to π$ and $D\to K$ decays and find excellent results $\frac{f^+_π(0)}{f^+_K(0)} = 0.80 \pm 0.03, \quad \frac{{\cal B}(D^0\to π^- e^+ ν_e)}{{\cal B}(D^0\to K^- e^+ ν_e)}= 0.079 \pm 0.008$. In particular for the $D\to π$ case, we reproduce, with high accuracy, the three-flavor lattice QCD results recently obtained by the Fermilab-MILC-HPQCD Collaboration. While for the $D\to K$ case, we successfully describe the data for $f^+(q^2)/f^+(0)$ recently measured by the FOCUS Collaboration.

A Numerical Study of Partially Twisted Boundary Conditions

We investigate the use of partially twisted boundary conditions in a lattice simulation with two degenerate flavours of improved Wilson sea quarks. The use of twisted boundary conditions on a cubic volume (L^3) gives access to components of hadronic momenta other than integer multiples of 2*pi/L. Partial twisting avoids the need for new gluon configurations for every choice of momentum, while, as recently demonstrated, keeping the finite-volume errors exponentially small for the physical quantities investigated in this letter. In this study we focus on the spectrum of pseudo scalar and vector mesons, on their leptonic decay constants and on Z_P, the matrix element of the pseudo scalar density between the pseudo scalar meson and the vacuum. The results confirm the momentum shift imposed by these boundary conditions and in addition demonstrate that they do not introduce any appreciable noise. We therefore advocate the use of partially twisted boundary conditions in applications where good momentum resolution is necessary.

Sea quark effects in B_K from N_f=2 clover-improved Wilson fermions

We report calculations of B_K using two flavours of dynamical clover-improved Wilson lattice fermions and look for dependence on the dynamical quark mass at fixed lattice spacing. We see some evidence for dynamical quark effects. In particular B_K decreases as the sea quark masses are reduced towards the up/down quark mass. Our meson masses are quite heavy and a firm prediction of B_K is a task for future simulations.

Sea quark effects in B_K from N_f=2 clover-improved Wilson fermions

We report calculations of the parameter B_K appearing in the Delta S=2 neutral kaon mixing matrix element, whose uncertainty limits the power of unitarity triangle constraints for testing the standard model or looking for new physics. We use two flavours of dynamical clover-improved Wilson lattice fermions and look for dependence on the dynamical quark mass at fixed lattice spacing. We see some evidence for dynamical quark effects and in particular B_K decreases as the sea quark masses are reduced towards the up/down quark mass.

B to rho ell nu form factors in lattice QCD

We present results from quenched lattice QCD for the form factors for the decay $B\toρlν$. The calculations are performed using a nonperturbatively improved action and operators at two values of the lattice spacing. The bottom quark mass is reached by extrapolation from simulations performed with heavy quark masses around the charm mass. Our primary result is for the partially integrated decay rate $Γ_{PI}$ over the range $12.7\gev^2 < q^2 < 18.2\gev^2$: Γ_PI = (4.9^{+12}_{-10}{+0}_{-14}) X 10^12 s^-1

Spectroscopy of Doubly-Charmed Baryons in Lattice QCD

We present results for masses of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 double-charm baryons in quenched lattice QCD, from an exploratory study using a non-perturbatively improved clover action at beta=6.2. We have studied local operators and we observe, after appropriate projections, a good signal for the ground states. We also present results for single-charmed baryons and spin-splittings for both double- and single-charmed states.

Decay Constants of B and D Mesons from Non-perturbatively Improved Lattice QCD

The decay constants of B, D and K mesons are computed in quenched lattice QCD at two different values of the coupling. The action and operators are O(a) improved with non-perturbative coefficients. The results are f_B=195(6)(+24/-23) MeV, f_D=206(4)(+17/-10) MeV, f_B_s=220(6)(+23/-28) MeV, f_D_s=229(3)(+23/-12) MeV and f_K= 150(3)(+12/-8) MeV. Systematic errors are discussed in detail. Results for vector decay constants, flavour symmetry breaking ratios of decay constants, the pseudoscalar-vector mass splitting and D meson masses are also presented.

Form Factors for Semileptonic B -> pi and D -> pi Decays from the Omnes Representation

We use the Omnes representation to obtain the q-squared dependence of the form factors f+ and f0 for semileptonic H -> pi decays from the elastic pi H -> pi H scattering amplitudes, where H denotes a B or D meson. The scattering amplitudes used satisfy elastic unitarity and are calculated from two-particle irreducible amplitudes obtained using tree-level heavy meson chiral perturbation theory (HMChPT). The q-squared dependences for the form factors agree with lattice QCD results when the HMChPT coupling constant, g, takes values smaller than 0.32, and confirm the milder dependence of f0 on q-squared found in sumrule calculations.

Improved B -> pi l nu_l form factors from the lattice

We present the results of a lattice computation of the form factors for B^0 ->pi^- l^+nu_l decays near zero-recoil. These results will allow a determination of the CKM matrix element |Vub| when measurements of the differential decay rate become available. We also provide models for extrapolation of the form factors and rate to the full recoil range. Our computation is performed in the quenched approximation to QCD on a 24^3x48 lattice at beta=6.2, using a non-perturbatively O(a)-improved action. The masses of all light valence quarks involved are extrapolated to their physical values.

An Investigation of the Soft Pion Relation in Quenched Lattice QCD

A lattice determination of the form factor and decay constants for the semileptonic decay of heavy pseudoscalar (PS) mesons at zero recoil is presented from which the soft pion relation is satisfied. Chiral extrapolation of the form factor is performed at constant $q^2$. Pole dominance is used to extrapolate the form factor in heavy quark mass. At the B mass, the form factor at zero recoil lies somewhat below the ratio of decay constants; the relation remains satisfied within error.
