The Kirillov picture for the Wigner particle

We discuss the Kirillov method for massless Wigner particles, usually (mis)named "continuous spin" or "infinite spin" particles. These appear in Wigner's classification of the unitary representations of the Poincaré group, labelled by elements of the enveloping algebra of the Poincaré Lie algebra. Now, the coadjoint orbit procedure introduced by Kirillov is a prelude to quantization. Here we exhibit for those particles the classical Casimir functions on phase space, in parallel to quantum representation theory. A good set of position coordinates are identified on the coadjoint orbits of the Wigner particles; the stabilizer subgroups and the symplectic structures of these orbits are also described.

Monopole-based quantization: a programme

We describe a programme to quantize a particle in the field of a (three dimensional) magnetic monopole using a Weyl system. We propose using the mapping of position and momenta as operators on a quaternionic Hilbert module following the work of Emch and Jadczyk.

Star-product in the presence of a monopole

We present a deformed star-product for a particle in the presence of a magnetic monopole. The product is obtained within a self-dual quantization-dequantization scheme, with the correspondence between classical observables and operators defined with the help of a quaternionic Hilbert space, following work by Emch and Jadczyk. The resulting product is well defined for a large class of complex functions and reproduces (at first order in hbar) the Poisson structure of the particle in the monopole field. The product is associative only for quantized monopole charges, thus incorporating Dirac's quantization requirement.

Hopf algebras in dynamical systems theory

The theory of exact and of approximate solutions for non-autonomous linear differential equations forms a wide field with strong ties to physics and applied problems. This paper is meant as a stepping stone for an exploration of this long-established theme, through the tinted glasses of a (Hopf and Rota-Baxter) algebraic point of view. By reviewing, reformulating and strengthening known results, we give evidence for the claim that the use of Hopf algebra allows for a refined analysis of differential equations. We revisit the renowned Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff-Dynkin formula by the modern approach involving Lie idempotents. Approximate solutions to differential equations involve, on the one hand, series of iterated integrals solving the corresponding integral equations; on the other hand, exponential solutions. Equating those solutions yields identities among products of iterated Riemann integrals. Now, the Riemann integral satisfies the integration-by-parts rule with the Leibniz rule for derivations as its partner; and skewderivations generalize derivations. Thus we seek an algebraic theory of integration, with the Rota-Baxter relation replacing the classical rule. The methods to deal with noncommutativity are especially highlighted. We find new identities, allowing for an extensive embedding of Dyson-Chen series of time- or path-ordered products (of generalized integration operators); of the corresponding Magnus expansion; and of their relations, into the unified algebraic setting of Rota-Baxter maps and their inverse skewderivations. This picture clarifies the approximate solutions to generalized integral equations corresponding to non-autonomous linear (skew)differential equations.

A Lie theoretic approach to renormalization

Motivated by recent work of Connes and Marcolli, based on the Connes-Kreimer approach to renormalization, we augment the latter by a combinatorial, Lie algebraic point of view. Our results rely both on the properties of the Dynkin idempotent, one of the fundamental Lie idempotents in the theory of free Lie algebras, and on properties of Hopf algebras encapsulated in the notion of associated descent algebras. Besides leading very directly to proofs of the main combinatorial aspects of the renormalization procedures, the new techniques give rise to an algebraic approach to the Galois theory of renormalization. In particular, they do not depend on the geometry underlying the case of dimensional regularization and the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence. This is illustrated with a discussion of the BPHZ renormalization scheme.

Noncommutative spacetime symmetries: Twist versus covariance

We prove that the Moyal product is covariant under linear affine spacetime transformations. From the covariance law, by introducing an $(x,Θ)$-space where the spacetime coordinates and the noncommutativity matrix components are on the same footing, we obtain a noncommutative representation of the affine algebra, its generators being differential operators in $(x,Θ)$-space. As a particular case, the Weyl Lie algebra is studied and known results for Weyl invariant noncommutative field theories are rederived in a nutshell. We also show that this covariance cannot be extended to spacetime transformations generated by differential operators whose coefficients are polynomials of order larger than one. We compare our approach with the twist-deformed enveloping algebra description of spacetime transformations.

Combinatorics of renormalization as matrix calculus

We give a simple presentation of the combinatorics of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory in terms of triangular matrices. The prescription, that may be of calculational value, is derived from first principles, to wit, the ``Birkhoff decomposition'' in the Hopf-algebraic description of renormalization by Connes and Kreimer.

Position-dependent noncommutative products: classical construction and field theory

We look in Euclidean $R^4$ for associative star products realizing the commutation relation $[x^μ,x^ν]=iΘ^{μν}(x)$, where the noncommutativity parameters $Θ^{μν}$ depend on the position coordinates $x$. We do this by adopting Rieffel's deformation theory (originally formulated for constant $Θ$ and which includes the Moyal product as a particular case) and find that, for a topology $R^2 \times R^2$, there is only one class of such products which are associative. It corresponds to a noncommutativity matrix whose canonical form has components $Θ^{12}=-Θ^{21}=0$ and $Θ^{34}=-Θ^{43}= θ(x^1,x^2)$, with $þ(x^1,x^2)$ an arbitrary positive smooth bounded function. In Minkowski space-time, this describes a position-dependent space-like or magnetic noncommutativity. We show how to generalize our construction to $n\geq 3$ arbitrary dimensions and use it to find traveling noncommutative lumps generalizing noncommutative solitons discussed in the literature. Next we consider Euclidean $λϕ^4$ field theory on such a noncommutative background. Using a zeta-like regulator, the covariant perturbation method and working in configuration space, we explicitly compute the UV singularities. We find that, while the two-point UV divergences are non-local, the four-point UV divergences are local, in accordance with recent results for constant $Θ$.

Trouble with space-like noncommutative field theory

It is argued that the one-loop effective action for a space-like noncommutative scalar field theory does not exist. This indicates that such theories are not renormalizable already at one loop order and suggests supersymmetrization and reinvestigating other types of noncommutativity.

Improved Epstein-Glaser Renormalization II. Lorentz invariant framework

The Epstein--Glaser type T-subtraction introduced by one of the authors in a previous paper is extended to the Lorentz invariant framework. The advantage of using our subtraction instead of Epstein and Glaser's standard W-subtraction method is especially important when working in Minkowski space, as then the counterterms necessary to keep Lorentz invariance are simplified. We show how T-renormalization of primitive diagrams in the Lorentz invariant framework directly relates to causal Riesz distributions. A covariant subtraction rule in momentum space is found, sharply improving upon the BPHZL method for massless theories.

Infinitely many star products to play with

While there has been growing interest for noncommutative spaces in recent times, most examples have been based on the simplest noncommutative algebra: [x_i,x_j]=i theta_{ij}. Here we present new classes of (non-formal) deformed products associated to linear Lie algebras of the kind [x_i,x_j]=ic_{ij}^k x_k. For all possible three-dimensional cases, we define a new star product and discuss its properties. To complete the analysis of these novel noncommutative spaces, we introduce noncompact spectral triples, and the concept of star triple, a specialization of the spectral triple to deformations of the algebra of functions on a noncompact manifold. We examine the generalization to the noncompact case of Connes' conditions for noncommutative spin geometries, and, in the framework of the new star products, we exhibit some candidates for a Dirac operator. On the technical level, properties of the Moyal multiplier algebra M(R_θ^{2n) are elucidated.

Connes-Kreimer-Epstein-Glaser Renormalization

Causal perturbative renormalization within the recursive Epstein-Glaser scheme involves extending, at each order, time-ordered operator-valued distributions to coinciding points. This is achieved by a generalized Taylor subtraction on test functions, which is transposed to distributions. We show how the Epstein-Glaser recursive construction can, by means of a slight modification of the Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs, be recast in terms of the new Connes-Kreimer algebraic setup for renormalization. This is illustrated for $ϕ^4_4$-theory.

The standard model in noncommutative geometry and fermion doubling

The link between chirality in the fermion sector and (anti-)self-duality in the boson sector is reexamined in the light of Connes' noncommutative geometry approach to the Standard Model. We find it to impose that the noncommutative Yang-Mills action be symmetrized in an analogous way to the Dirac-Yukawa operator itself.

On summability of distributions and spectral geometry

Modulo the moment asymptotic expansion, the Cesaro and parametric behaviours of distributions at infinity are equivalent. On the strength of this result, we construct the asymptotic analysis for spectral densities, arising from elliptic pseudodifferential operators. We show how Cesaro developments lead to efficient calculations of the expansion coefficients of counting number functionals and Green functions. The bosonic action functional proposed by Chamseddine and Connes can more generally be validated as a Cesaro asymptotic development.

A nonperturbative form of the spectral action principle in noncommutative geometry

Using the formalism of superconnections, we show the existence of a bosonic action functional for the standard K-cycle in noncommutative geometry, giving rise, through the spectral action principle, only to the Einstein gravity and Standard Model Yang-Mills-Higgs terms. It provides an effective nonminimal coupling in the bosonic sector of the Lagrangian.

On Marshak's and Connes' views of chirality

I render the substance of the discussions I had with Robert E. Marshak shortly before his death, wherein the kinship between the ``neutrino paradigm'' ---espoused by Marshak--- and the central notion of K-cycle in noncommutative geometry (NCG) was found. In that context, we give a brief account of the Connes--Lott reconstruction of the Standard Model (SM).

Parameter restrictions in a non-commutative geometry model do not survive standard quantum corrections

We have investigated the standard one-loop quantum corrections for a particularly simple non-commutative geometry model containing fermions interacting with a unique abelian gauge field and a unique scalar through Yukawa couplings. In this model there are certain relations among the different coupling constants quite similar to the ones appearing in the Connes-Lott version of the standard model. We find that it is not possible to implement those relations in a renormalization-group invariant way.
