Emergence of the stripe-domain phase in patterned Permalloy films

The occurrence of stripe domains in ferromagnetic Permalloy (Py=Fe$_{20}$Ni$_{80}$) is a well known phenomenon which has been extensively observed and characterized. This peculiar magnetic configuration appears only in films with a thickness above a critical value ($d_{cr}$), which is strongly determined by the sputtering conditions (i.e. deposition rate, temperature, magnetic field). So far, $d_{cr}$ has usually been presented as the boundary between the homogeneous (H) and stripe-domains (SD) regime, respectively below and above $d_{cr}$. In this work we study the transition from the H to the SD regime in thin films and microstructured bridges of Py with different thicknesses. We find there is an intermediate regime, over a quite significant thickness range below d$_{cr}$, which is signaled in confined structures by a quickly changing domain-wall configuration and by a broadening of the magnetoresistance dip at the coercive field. We call this the emerging stripe-domains (ESD) regime. The transition from the ESD to the SD regime is accompanied by a sharp increase of the magnetoresistance ratio at the thickness where stripes appear in MFM.

Quantum dynamics of vortices in mesoscopic magnetic disks

Model of quantum depinning of magnetic vortex cores from line defects in a disk geometry and under the application of an in-plane magnetic field has been developed within the framework of the Caldeira-Leggett theory. The corresponding instanton solutions are computed for several values of the magnetic field. Expressions for the crossover temperature Tc and for the depinning rate Γ(T) are obtained. Fitting of the theory parameters to experimental data is also presented.

Anisotropic magnetic deflagration in single crystals of Gd5Ge4

Experimental evidence of the anisotropy of the magnetic deflagration associated with the low-temperature first order antiferromagnetic (AFM) --> ferromagnetic (FM) phase-transition in single crystals of Gd5Ge4 is reported. The deflagrations have been induced by controlled pulses of surface acoustic waves (SAW) allowing us to explore both the magnetic field and temperature dependencies on the characteristic times of the phenomenon. The study was done using samples with different geometries and configurations between the SAW pulses and the direction of the applied magnetic field with respect to the three main crystallographic directions of the samples. The effect of temperature is nearly negligible, whereas observed strong magnetic field dependence correlates with the magnetic anisotropy of the sample. Finally, the role of the SAW pulses in both the ignition and formation of the deflagration front was also studied, and we show that the thermal diffusivity of Gd5Ge4 must be anisotropic, following \kappaa>\kappab>\kappac.

Quantum Tunneling of Normal-Superconducting Interfaces in a Type-I Superconductor

Evidence of a non-thermal magnetic relaxation in the intermediate state of a type-I superconducor is presented. It is attributed to quantum tunneling of interfaces separating normal and superconducting regions. Tunneling barriers are estimated and temperature of the crossover from thermal to quantum regime is obtained from Caldeira-Leggett theory. Comparison between theory and experiment points to tunneling of interface segments of size comparable to the coherence length, by steps of order one nanometer.

Magneto-optical imaging of magnetic deflagration in Mn12-Acetate

For the first time, the morphology and dynamics of spin avalanches in Mn12-Acetate crystals using magneto-optical imaging has been explored. We observe an inhomogeneous relaxation of the magnetization, the spins reversing first at one edge of the crystal and a few milliseconds later at the other end. Our data fit well with the theory of magnetic deflagration, demonstrating that very slow deflagration rates can be obtained, which makes new types of experiments possible.

Bounding the top and bottom electric dipole moments from neutron experimental data

Heavy quarks, namely, the top and bottom quarks, may show great sensitiveness to new physics effects. In particular, they might have unusually large electric dipole moments. This possibility is analyzed via the corresponding one-loop correction to the neutron electric dipole moment, $d_n$. The current experimental limit on $d_n$ is used then to derive the uppers bounds $|d_t|<3.06\times 10^{-15}$ e-cm, $|d_b|<1.22\times 10^{-13}$ e-cm.

Spatial motion of the magnetic avalanches associated to the CO-AFM to CD-FM transition in La$_{0.225}$Pr$\_{0.40}$Ca$\_{0.375}$MnO$\_{3}$ manganite

Very fast magnetic avalanches in (La, Pr)-based manganites are the signature of a phase transition from an insulating blocked charge-ordered (CO-AFM) state to a charge delocalized ferromagnetic (CD-FM) state. We report here the experimental observation that this transition does not occur neither simultaneously nor randomly in the whole sample but there is instead a spatial propagation with a velocity of the order of tens of m/s. Our results show that avalanches are originated in the inside of the sample, move to the outside and occur at values of the applied magnetic field that depend on the CD-FM fraction in the sample. Moreover, a change in the gradient of the magnetic field along the sample shifts the point where the avalanches are ignited.

Phonon-Induced Quantum Magnetic Deflagration in Mn12

A comprehensive set of experiments on the effect of high-frequency surface acoustic waves, SAWs, in the spin relaxation in Mn12-acetate is presented. We have studied the quantum magnetic deflagration induced by SAWs under various experimental conditions extending the data shown in a very recent paper [A. Hernandez-Minguez et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 217205 (2005)]. We have focused our study on the dependence of both the ignition time and the propagation speed of the magnetic avalanches on the frequency, amplitude, and duration of the SAW pulses in experiments performed under different temperatures and external magnetic fields.

Rare top quark decay t --> u_1 \bar{u}_2 u_2 in the standard model

The one-loop induced top quark decay $t\to u_1\bar{u}_2u_2$ ($u_i=u,c$) is calculated in the context of the standard model. The dominant contribution to this top quark decay arises from the Feynman diagrams induced by the off-shell $tu_1g^*$ vertex, whereas the box diagrams are negligibly small. In contrast with the on-shell $tu_1g$ vertex, which only gives rise to a pure dipolar effect, the off-shell $tu_1g^*$ coupling also involves a monopolar term, which gives a larger contribution than the dipolar one. It is found that the branching ratio for the three-body decay $t\to u_1\bar{u}_2u_2$ is about of the same order of magnitude of the two-body decay $t\to u_1 g$, the latter being slightly larger, which stems from the fact that the three-body decay is dominated by a monopolar term.

Quantum Magnetic Deflagration in Mn12 Acetate

We report controlled ignition of magnetization reversal avalanches by surface acoustic waves in a single crystal of Mn12 acetate. Our data show that the speed of the avalanche exhibits maxima on the magnetic field at the tunneling resonances of Mn12. Combined with the evidence of magnetic deflagration in Mn12 acetate (Suzuki et al., cond-mat/0506569) this suggests a novel physical phenomenon: deflagration assisted by quantum tunneling.

Low temperature microwave emission from molecular clusters

We investigate the experimental detection of the electromagnetic radiation generated in the fast magnetization reversal in Mn12-acetate at low temperatures. In our experiments we used large single crystals and assemblies of several small single crystals of Mn12-acetate placed inside a cylindrical stainless steel waveguide in which an InSb hot electron device was also placed to detect the radiation. All this was set inside a SQUID magnetometer that allowed to change the magnetic field and measure the magnetic moment and the temperature of the sample as the InSb detected simultaneously the radiation emitted from the molecular magnets. Our data show a sequential process in which the fast inversion of the magnetic moment first occurs, then the radiation is detected by the InSb device, and finally the temperature of the sample increases during 15 ms to subsequently recover its original value in several hundreds of milliseconds.

HERA-B Framework for Online Calibration and Alignment

This paper describes the architecture and implementation of the HERA-B framework for online calibration and alignment. At HERA-B the performance of all trigger levels, including the online reconstruction, strongly depends on using the appropriate calibration and alignment constants, which might change during data taking. A system to monitor, recompute and distribute those constants to online processes has been integrated in the data acquisition and trigger systems.

Quantum dynamics of crystals of molecular nanomagnets inside a resonant cavity

It is shown that crystals of molecular nanomagnets exhibit enhanced magnetic relaxation when placed inside a resonant cavity. Strong dependence of the magnetization curve on the geometry of the cavity has been observed, providing evidence of the coherent microwave radiation by the crystals. A similar dependence has been found for a crystal placed between Fabry-Perot superconducting mirrors. These observations open the possibility of building a nanomagnetic microwave laser pumped by the magnetic field.

Comment on "Magnetic Relaxations of Antiferromagnetic Nanoparticles in Magnetic Fields"

We have carried out in ferritin the Field-Cooling method and data analysis proposed by Mamiya et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 67202 (2002) at T = 5 K in order to check the time magnetic relaxation of these antiferromagnetic nanoparticles as a function of the magnetic field. We found that relaxation at T = 5 K in ferritin is faster in the absence of magnetic field, in good agreement with the zero-field Resonant Spin Quantum Tunneling observed previously in ferritin (Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1754 (1997).

Effective Lagrangian description of the lepton flavor violating decays Z-->li lj

A comprehensive analysis of the lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays Z-->li lj is presented within the effective Lagrangian approach. Both the decoupling and nondecoupling scenarios are explored. The experimental constraints from li --> lj lk \bar{lk} and li -->lj gamma as well as some relationships arising from the gauge invariance of the effective Lagrangian are used to put constraints on Z-->li lj. It is found that while current experimental data impose very strong constraints on Z-->mu e, the channel Z --> tau mu (e)still may be at the reach of the planned TESLA collider.

Experimental evidence of the dependence of spin tunnelling on the concentration of dislocations in Mn12 crystals

We present experimental results on resonant spin tunnelling in a single crystal of Mn$_{12}$-2Cl benzoate with different concentration of dislocations. The time evolution of the magnetisation follows the stretched exponential over a few time decades. The values of parameters of stretched exponential deduced from experiment have been used to determine the concentration of dislocations before and after the cooling-annealing process, using the algorithm recently suggested by Garanin and Chudnovsky.

Crystal defects and spin tunneling in single crystals of Mn12 clusters

The question addressed in this paper is that of the influence of the density of dislocations on the spin tunneling in Mn12 clusters. We have determined the variation in the mosaicity of the crystal structure of fresh and thermally treated single crystals of Mn12 by analyzing the widening of low angle X-ray diffraction peaks. It has also been well established from both isothermal magnetization and relaxation experiments that there is a broad distribution of tunneling rates which is shifted to higher rates when increases the density of dislocations.
