Equations for secant varieties to Veronese varieties

We define new classes of modules of equations for secant varieties of Veronese varieties using representation theory and geometry. We also revisit some old modules of equations (catalecticant minors) to determine when they are sufficient to give scheme-theoretic defining equations.

Equations for secant varieties via vector bundles

We introduce vector bundle techniques for finding equations of secant varieties. A test is established that determines when a secant variety is an irreducible component of the zero set of the equations found. We also prove an induction theorem for varieties that are not weakly defective, that allows one to conclude that the zero set of the equations found for s_{r-1}(X) have s_{r-1}(X) as an irreducible component when s_r(X) is an irreducible component of the equations found for it. The techniques are illustrated with examples of homogeneous varieties. We give an algorithm to decompose a general ternary quintic as the sum of seven fifth powers.

Equations for secant varieties of Veronese and other varieties

New classes of modules of equations for secant varieties of Veronese varieties are defined using representation theory and geometry. Some old modules of equations (catalecticant minors) are revisited to determine when they are sufficient to give scheme-theoretic defining equations. An algorithm to decompose a general ternary quintic as the sum of seven fifth powers is given as an illustration of our methods. Our new equations and results about them are put into a larger context by introducing vector bundle techniques for finding equations of secant varieties in general. We include a few homogeneous examples of this method.

Hypersurfaces with degenerate duals and the Geometric Complexity Theory Program

We determine set-theoretic defining equations for the variety of hypersurfaces of degree d in an N-dimensional complex vector space that have dual variety of dimension at most k. We apply these equations to the Mulmuley-Sohoni variety, the GL_{n^2} orbit closure of the determinant, showing it is an irreducible component of the variety of hypersurfaces of degree $n$ in C^{n^2} with dual of dimension at most 2n-2. We establish additional geometric properties of the Mulmuley-Sohoni variety and prove a quadratic lower bound for the determinental border-complexity of the permanent.

P versus NP and geometry

I describe three geometric approaches to resolving variants of P v. NP, present several results that illustrate the role of group actions in complexity theory, and make a first step towards completely geometric definitions of complexity classes.

On the ranks and border ranks of symmetric tensors

Motivated by questions arising in signal processing, computational complexity, and other areas, we study the ranks and border ranks of symmetric tensors using geometric methods. We provide improved lower bounds for the rank of a symmetric tensor (i.e., a homogeneous polynomial) obtained by considering the singularities of the hypersurface defined by the polynomial. We obtain normal forms for polynomials of border rank up to five, and compute or bound the ranks of several classes of polynomials, including monomials, the determinant, and the permanent.

Holographic algorithms without matchgates

The theory of holographic algorithms, which are polynomial time algorithms for certain combinatorial counting problems, yields insight into the hierarchy of complexity classes. In particular, the theory produces algebraic tests for a problem to be in the class P. In this article we streamline the implementation of holographic algorithms by eliminating one of the steps in the construction procedure, and generalize their applicability to new signatures. Instead of matchgates, which are weighted graph fragments that replace vertices of a natural bipartite graph G associated to a problem P, our approach uses only only a natural number-of-edges by number-of-edges matrix associated to G. An easy-to-compute multiple of its Pfaffian is the number of solutions to the counting problem. This simplification improves our understanding of the applicability of holographic algorithms, indicates a more geometric approach to complexity classes, and facilitates practical implementations. The generalized applicability arises because our approach allows for new algebraic tests that are different from the "Grassmann-Plucker identities" used up until now. Natural problems treatable by these new methods have been previously considered in a different context, and we present one such example.

On secant varieties of Compact Hermitian Symmetric Spaces

We show that the secant varieties of rank three compact Hermitian symmetric spaces in their minimal homogeneous embeddings are normal, with rational singularities. We show that their ideals are generated in degree three - with one exception, the secant variety of the $21$-dimensional spinor variety in $\pp{63}$ where we show the ideal is generated in degree four. We also discuss the coordinate rings of secant varieties of compact Hermitian symmetric spaces.

On the Debarre-de Jong and Beheshti-Starr conjectures on hypersurfaces with too many lines

We show that the Debarre-de Jong conjecture that the Fano scheme of lines on a smooth hypersurface of degree at most n in n-dimensional projective space must have its expected dimension, and the Beheshti-Starr conjecture that bounds the dimension of the Fano scheme of lines for hypersurfaces of degree at least n in n-dimensional projective space, reduce to determining if the intersection of the top Chern classes of certain vector bundles is nonzero.

Lines on hypersurfaces

This is a detailed study of the infinitesimal variation of the variety of lines through a point of a low degree hypersurface in pro jective space. The motion is governed by a system of partial differential equations which we describe explicitly.

Exterior differential systems, Lie algebra cohomology, and the rigidity of homogenous varieties

These are expository notes from the 2008 Srni Winter School. They have two purposes: (1) to give a quick introduction to exterior differential systems (EDS), which is a collection of techniques for determining local existence to systems of partial differential equations, and (2) to give an exposition of recent work (joint with C. Robles) on the study of the Fubini-Griffiths-Harris rigidity of rational homogeneous varieties, which also involves an advance in the EDS technology.

Fubini-Griffiths-Harris rigidity and Lie algebra cohomology

We prove a general extrinsic rigidity theorem for homogeneous varieties in $\mathbb{CP}^N$. The theorem is used to show that the adjoint variety of a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ (the unique minimal G orbit in $\mathbb{P}\mathfrak{g}$) is extrinsically rigid to third order. In contrast, we show that the adjoint variety of $SL_3\mathbb{C}$, and the Segre product $\mathit{Seg}(\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^n)$, both varieties with osculating sequences of length two, are flexible at order two. In the $SL_3\mathbb{C}$ example we discuss the relationship between the extrinsic projective geometry and the intrinsic path geometry. We extend machinery developed by Hwang and Yamaguchi, Se-ashi, Tanaka and others to reduce the proof of the general theorem to a Lie algebra cohomology calculation. The proofs of the flexibility statements use exterior differential systems techniques.

Geometry and the complexity of matrix multiplication

We survey results in algebraic complexity theory, focusing on matrix multiplication. Our goals are (i.) to show how open questions in algebraic complexity theory are naturally posed as questions in geometry and representation theory, (ii.) to motivate researchers to work on these questions, and (iii.) to point out relations with more general problems in geometry. The key geometric objects for our study are the secant varieties of Segre varieties. We explain how these varieties are also useful for algebraic statistics, the study of phylogenetic invariants, and quantum computing.

On Tangential varieties of rational homogeneous varieties

We determine which tangential varieties of homogeneously embedded rational homogeneous varieties are spherical. We determine the homogeneous coordinate rings and rings of covariants of the tangential varieties of homogenously embedded compact Hermitian symmetric spaces (CHSS). We give bounds on the degrees of generators of the ideals of tangential varieties of CHSS and obtain more explicit infomation about the ideals in certain cases.
