The projective geometry of Freudenthal's magic square

We connect the algebraic geometry and representation theory associated to Freudenthal's magic square. We give unified geometric descriptions of several classes of orbit closures, describing their hyperplane sections and desingularizations, and interpreting them in terms of composition algebras. In particular, we show how a class of invariant quartic polynomials can be viewed as generalizations of the classical discriminant of a cubic polynomial.

On the infinitesimal rigidity of homogeneous varieties

Let $X\subset P^N$ be a variety (respectively a patch of an analytic submanifold) and let $x\in X$ be a general point. We show that if the projective second fundamental form of $X$ at $x$ is isomorphic to the second fundamental form of a point of a Segre $P^n\times P^m$, $n,m\geq 2$, a Grassmaniann $G(2,n+2)$, $n\geq 4$, or the Cayley plane $OP^2$, then $X$ is the corresponding homogeneous variety (resp. a patch of the corresponding homogeneous variety). If the projective second fundamental form of $X$ at $x$ is isomorphic to the second fundamental form of a point of a Veronese $v_2(P^n)$ and the Fubini cubic form of $X$ at $x$ is zero, then $X=v_2(P^n)$ (resp. a patch of $v_2(P^n)$). All these results are valid in the real or complex analytic categories and locally in the $C^{\infty}$ category if one assumes the hypotheses hold in a neighborhood of any point $x$. As a byproduct, we show that the systems of quadrics $I_2(P^{m-1}\sqcup P^{n-1}), I_2(P^1\times P^{n-1})$ and $I_2(S_5)$ are stable in the sense that if $A_t\subset S^2T^*$ is an analytic family such that for $t\neq 0$, $A_t\simeq A$, then $A_0\simeq A$. We also make some observations related to the Fulton-Hansen connectedness theorem.

Exterior differential systems: a geometric approach to PDE. Lecture notes from the 1997 Daewoo workshop

This is an elementary introduction to exterior differential systems motivated by two examples: minimal submanifolds and the isometric embedding problem. The two main goals of the lectures are: 1. To explain how to find an appropriate geometric setting for studying a given system of pde. 2. To explain the Cartan algorithm to determine the moduli space of local solutions to any given exterior differential system and an appropriate initial value problem for the system.

Is a linear space contained in a variety? - On the number of derivatives needed to tell

Let $X^n\subset C^{n+a}$ or $X^n\subset P^{n+a}$ be a patch of an analytic submanifold of an affine or projective space, let $x\in X$ be a general point, and let L^k be a linear space of dimension k osculating to order m at x. If m is large enough, one expects L to be contained in X and thus X contains a linear space of dimension kthrough almost every point. We show that $L\subset X$ in the following cases: k=1 and m=n+1; k=n-1, $a\geq 2$, and m=2; $n\geq 4$, k=n-2 and m=4. We prove these results by first deriving the order of osculation that generically implies containment and then showing that in these cases containment must occur. If X is a patch of a projective variety, we address the question as to whether X can be a smooth variety. We show that if there is a P^k through each point and $codim(X)<\frac{k}{n-k}$ then X cannot be a smooth variety.

On symmetric degeneracy loci, spaces of symmetric matrices of constant rank and dual varieties

Let X be a nonsingular simply connected projective variety of dimension m, E a rank n vector bundle on X, and L a line bundle on X. Suppose that $S^2(E^{*}) \otimes L$ is an ample vector bundle and that there is a constant even rank $r \ge 2$ symmetric bundle map $E \to E^{*} \otimes L$. We prove that $m \le n-r$. We use this result to solve the constant rank problem for symmetric matrices, proving that the maximal dimension of a linear subspace of the space of $m\times m$ symmetric matrices such that each nonzero element has even rank $r \ge 2$ is $m-r+1$. We explain how this result relates to the study of dual varieties in projective geometry and give some applications and examples.

On isometric and minimal isometric embeddings

In this paper we study critial isometric and minimal isometric embeddings of classes of Riemannian metrics which we call {\it quasi-$k$-curved metrics}. Quasi-$k$-curved metrics generalize the metrics of space forms. We construct explicit examples and prove results about existence and rigidity.

On an unusual conjecture of Kontsevich and variants of Castelnuovo's lemma

Let $A=(a^i_j)$ be an orthogonal matrix with no entries zero. Let $B=(b^i_j)$ be the matrix defined by $b^i_j=\frac 1{a^i_j}$. M. Kontsevich conjectured that the rank of $B$ is never equal to three. We interpret this conjecture geometrically and prove it. The geometric statment can be understood as a generalization of the Castelnouvo lemma and Brianchon's theorem.

On Degenerate Secant and Tangential Varieties and Local Differential Geometry

We study the local differential geometry of varieties $X^n\subset \Bbb C\Bbb P^{n+a}$ with degenerate secant and tangential varieties. We show that the second fundamental form of a smooth variety with degenerate tangential variety is subject to certain rank restrictions. The rank restrictions imply a slightly refined version of Zak's theorem on linear normality and a short proof of the Zak-Fantecchi theorem on the superadditivity of multisecant defects. We show there is a vector bundle defined over general points of $TX$ whose fibers carry the structure of a Clifford algebra. This structure implies additional restrictions of the size of the secant defect. The Clifford algebra structure, combined with further local computations, yields a new proof of Zak's theorem on Severi varieties that is substantially shorter than the original. We also prove local and global results on the dimension of the Gauss image of degenerate tangential varieties, refining the results in [GH].
