Absence of finite-temperature ballistic charge transport in the 1D half-filled Hubbard model

Finite-temperature T>0 transport properties of integrable and nonintegrable one-dimensional (1D) many-particle quantum systems are rather different, showing in the metallic phases ballistic and diffusive behavior, respectively. The repulsive 1D Hubbard model is an integrable system of wide physical interest. For electronic densities $n\neq1$ it is an ideal conductor, with ballistic charge transport for T larger or equal to 0. In spite that it is solvable by the Bethe ansatz, at $n=1$ its T>0 transport properties are a collective-behavior issue that remains poorly understood. Here we combine that solution with symmetry to show that for on-site repulsion U>0 the charge stiffness D (T) vanishes for T>0 in the thermodynamic limit. This absence of finite-temperature ballistic charge transport is an exact result that clarifies a long-standing open problem.

Spinon and eta-spinon correlation functions

We calculate real-space static correlation functions related to basic entities of the one-dimensional Hubbard model, which emerge from the exact Bethe-ansatz solution. These entities involve complex rearrangements of the original electrons. Basic ingredients are operators related to unoccupied, singly occupied with spin up or spin down and doubly occupied sites. The spatial decay of their correlation functions is determined using an approximate mean-field-like approach based on the Zou-Anderson transformation and DMRG results for the half-filled case. The nature and spatial extent of the correlations between two sites on the Hubbard chain is studied using the eigenstates and eigenvalues of the two-site reduced density matrix.

Charge and Spin Fractionalization Beyond the Luttinger Liquid Paradigm

It is well established that at low energies one-dimensional (1D) fermionic systems are described by the Luttinger liquid (LL) theory, that predicts phenomena like spin-charge separation, and charge fractionalization into chiral modes. Here we show through the time evolution of an electron injected into a 1D t-J model, obtained with time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, that a further fractionalization of both charge and spin takes place beyond the hydrodynamic limit. Its dynamics can be understood at the supersymmetric point (J=2t) in terms of the excitations of the Bethe-Ansatz solution. Furthermore we show that fractionalization with similar characteristics extends to the whole region corresponding to a repulsive LL.

d-wave superconductivity in the virtual-electron pair quantum liquid

We find evidence that for zero spin density $m=0$, intermediate $U/4t$ values, and a range $x\in (x_c,x_*)$ of finite hole concentrations the ground state of the virtual-electron pair quantum liquid obtained from perturbing the square-lattice quantum liquid of Ref. \cite{companion2} by weak three-dimensional (3D) uniaxial anisotropy and intrinsic disorder has long-range d-wave superconducting order. Here $t$ is the effective nearest-neighbor transfer integral and $U$ the effective on-site repulsion. The long-range d-wave superconducting order emerges below a critical temperature $T_c$ for a hole concentration range centered at $x_{op}= (x_c+x_*)/2$. It results from the effects of the residual interactions of the charge $c$ fermions and spin-neutral two-spinon $s1$ fermions of Ref. \cite{companion2}, as a by-product of the short-range spin correlations. Rather than the U(1) symmetry contained in the $η$-spin SU(2) symmetry of the $SO(4) = [SU(2)\times SU(2)]/Z_2$ symmetry, the U(1) symmetry broken at $T_c$ is the $c$ fermion U(1) symmetry of Ref. \cite{bipartite}. It is contained in the extended global $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)=[SO(4)\times U(1)]/Z_2$ symmetry of the Hubbard model on the square lattice. Our preliminary results seem to indicate that combining the electronic correlations described by the square-lattice quantum liquid perturbed by 3D uniaxial anisotropy with the very weak effects of intrinsic disorder or superfluid-density anisotropy leads for the hole-concentration range $x\in (x_c,x_*)$ to a successful description of the universal properties of the hole-doped cuprate superconductors.

Hubbard-model description of the high-energy spin-spectral-weight distribution in La(2)CuO(4)

The spectral-weight distribution in recent neutron scattering experiments on the parent compound La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO), which are limited in energy range to about 450\,meV, is studied in the framework of the Hubbard model on the square lattice with effective nearest-neighbor transfer integral $t$ and on-site repulsion $U$. Our study combines a number of numerical and theoretical approaches, including, in addition to standard treatments, density matrix renormalization group calculations for Hubbard cylinders and a suitable spinon approach for the spin excitations. Our results confirm that the $U/8t$ magnitude suitable to LCO corresponds to intermediate $U$ values smaller than the bandwidth $8t$, which we estimate to be $8t \approx 2.36$ eV for $U/8t\approx 0.76$. This confirms the unsuitability of the conventional linear spin-wave theory. Our theoretical studies provide evidence for the occurrence of ground-state d-wave spinon pairing in the half-filled Hubbard model on the square lattice. This pairing applies only to the rotated-electron spin degrees of freedom, but it could play a role in a possible electron d-wave pairing formation upon hole doping. We find that the higher-energy spin spectral weight extends to about 566 meV and is located at and near the momentum $[π,π]$. The continuum weight energy-integrated intensity vanishes or is extremely small at momentum $[π,0]$. This behavior of this intensity is consistent with that of the spin waves observed in recent high-energy neutron scattering experiments, which are damped at the momentum $[π,0]$. We suggest that future LCO neutron scattering experiments scan the energies between 450 meV and 566 meV and momenta around $[π,π]$.

Charge dynamics in half-filled Hubbard chains with finite on-site interaction

We study the charge dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with finite on-site repulsion U at half filling. Numerical results from the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group are analyzed by comparison with the exact spectrum of the model. The evolution of the line shape as a function of U is explained in terms of a relative transfer of spectral weight between the two-holon continuum that dominates in the limit U\to \infty and a subset of the two-holon-two-spinon continuum that reconstructs the electron-hole continuum in the limit U\to 0. Power-law singularities along boundary lines of the spectrum are described by effective impurity models that are explicitly invariant under spin and η-spin SU(2) rotations. The Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition is reflected in a discontinuous change of the exponents of edge singularities at U=0. The sharp feature observed in the spectrum for momenta near the zone boundary is attributed to a Van Hove singularity that persists as a consequence of integrability.

The $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ Hubbard model on a square lattice in terms of $c$ and $αν$ fermions and deconfined $η$-spinons and spinons

In this paper a description of the energy eingenstates of the Hubbard model on the square lattice with nearest-neighbor transfer integral $t$, on-site repulsion $U$, and $N_a^2\gg 1$ sites in terms of occupancy configurations of charge $c$ fermions, spin-1/2 spinons, and $η$-spin-1/2 $η$-spinons is introduced. Such objects emerge from a suitable electron - rotated-electron unitary transformation. In chromodynamics the quarks have color but all quark-composite physical particles are color-neutral. Within our description the $η$-spinon (and spinons) that are not invariant under the electron - rotated-electron unitary transformation have $η$ spin 1/2 (and spin 1/2) but are part of $η$-spin-neutral (and spin-neutral) $2ν$-$η$-spinon (and $2ν$-spinon) composite $ην$ fermions (and $sν$ fermions). Here $ν=1,2,...$ is the number of $η$-spinon (and spinon) pairs. In turn, a well-defined number of independent spinons and independent $η$-spinons are invariant under the electron - rotated-electron unitary transformation. Simple occupancy configurations of (i) the $c$ fermions, (ii) independent spinons and $2ν$-spinon composite $sν$ fermions, and (iii) independent $η$-spinons and $2ν$-$η$-spinon composite $ην$ fermions generate an useful complete set of states. The configurations (i), (ii), and (iii) correspond to the state representations of the U(1), spin SU(2), and $η$-spin SU(2) symmetries, respectively, associated with the model $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1) =[SU(2)\times SU(2)\times U(1)]/Z_2^2$ global symmetry.

Spin-spectral-weight distribution and energy range of the parent compound La$_2$CuO$_4$

The spectral-weight distribution in recent neutron scattering experiments on the parent compound La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO), which are limited in energy range to about 450\,meV, is studied in the framework of the Hubbard model on the square lattice. We find that the higher-energy weight extends to about 566\,meV and is located at and near the momentum $[π,π]$. Our results confirm that the $U/t$ value suitable to LCO is in the range $U/t\in (6,8)$. The continuum weight energy-integrated intensity vanishes or is extremely small at momentum $[π,0]$. This behavior of the intensity is consistent with that of spin waves, which are damped at $[π,0]$.

Quantum criticality and correlations in the cuprate superconductors

A description of the electronic correlations contained in the Hubbard model on the square-lattice perturbed by very weak three-dimensional uniaxial anisotropy in terms of the residual interactions of charge $c$ fermions and spin-neutral composite two-spinon $s1$ fermions is used to access further information on the origin of quantum critical behavior in the hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Excellent quantitative agreement with their anisotropic linear-$ω$ one-electron scattering rate and normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity is achieved. Our results provide strong evidence that the normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity is indeed a manifestation of low-temperature scale-invariant physics.

Neutron scattering in the hole-doped cuprate superconductors

The occurrence of a neutron resonance energy is a common feature of unconventional superconductors. In turn, the low-temperature incommensurate sharp peaks observed in the inelastic neutron scattering of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) correspond to four rods symmetrically distributed around $[π,π]$. Here it is shown that within the virtual-electron pair quantum liquid recently introduced the neutron resonance energy and the LSCO low-temperature incommensurate sharp peaks are generated by simple and closely related spinon processes. Our results indicate that in LSCO the neutron resonance energy either does not occur or corresponds to a lower energy $\approx 17$ meV.

Ground-state two-spinon bonds in the Hubbard model on a square lattice

In this paper the spin configurations of the ground state and one- and two-electron excited states of the Hubbard model on the square lattice are studied. We profit from a general rotated-electron description, which is consistent with the model global $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry. For rotated electrons, doubly and single occupancy are good quantum numbers for on-site repulsion $U>0$. The above states are within that description generated by occupancy configurations of charge $c$ fermions and spin-singlet two-spinon $s1$ bond particles. Those describe the charge and spin degrees of freedom, respectively, of the rotated electrons that singly occupy sites. While the $c$ fermions have no internal structure, that of the spin-neutral $s1$ bond-particle occupancy configurations is here described in terms of spinon occupancies of a well-defined effective spin lattice. In reference \cite{companion} it is confirmed that our results contribute to the further understanding of the role of electronic correlations in the spin spectrum of the parent compound La$_2$CuO$_4$. They are also of interest for studies of ultra-cold fermionic atoms on an optical lattice.

A description of the Hubbard model on a square lattice consistent with its global $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry

In this paper a description of the Hubbard model on the square lattice with nearest-neighbor transfer integral $t$, on-site repulsion $U$, and $N_a^2\gg 1$ sites consistent with its exact global $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry is constructed. Our studies profit from the interplay of that recently found global symmetry of the model on any bipartite lattice with the transformation laws under a suitable electron - rotated-electron unitary transformation of a well-defined set of operators and quantum objects. For $U/4t>0$ the occupancy configurations of these objects generate the energy eigenstates that span the one- and two-electron subspace. Such a subspace as defined in this paper contains nearly the whole spectral weight of the excitations generated by application onto the zero-spin-density ground state of one- and two-electron operators. Our description involves three basic objects: charge $c$ fermions, spin-1/2 spinons, and $η$-spin-1/2 $η$-spinons. Alike in chromodynamics the quarks have color but all quark-composite physical particles are color-neutral, the $η$-spinon (and spinons) that are not invariant under that transformation have $η$ spin 1/2 (and spin 1/2) but are part of $η$-spin-neutral (and spin-neutral) $2ν$-$η$-spinon (and $2ν$-spinon) composite $ην$ fermions (and $sν$ fermions) where $ν=1,2,...$ is the number of $η$-spinon (and spinon) pairs. The description introduced here is consistent with a Mott-Hubbard insulating ground state with antiferromagnetic long-range order for half filling at $x=0$ hole concentration and a ground state with short-range spin order for a well-defined range of finite hole concentrations $x>0$.

d-wave superconductivity in Hubbard model on the square lattice perturbed by weak 3D uniaxial anisotropy

The Hubbard model on a square lattice is one of the most studied condensed-matter quantum problems. Here we find evidence that for intermediate $U/4t$ values and a hole-concentration range $x\in (x_c,x_*)$ the ground state of the Hubbard model on the square lattice perturbed by weak three-dimensional (3D) uniaxial anisotropy has long-range d-wave superconducting order. Here $t$ is the effective nearest-neighbor transfer integral and $U$ the effective on-site repulsion. The lower critical concentration $x_c$ involves the Ginzburg number Gi and is approximately given by $x_c\approx {\rm Gi}+x_0\approx 0.05$. Here $x_0<{\rm Gi}$ is a small critical hole concentration that marks a sharp quantum phase transition from a Mott-Hubbard insulator with long-range antiferromagnetic order for $x<x_0$ to an Anderson insulator with short-range incommensurate spiral spin order for $x\in (x_0,x_c)$. The value of the critical hole concentration $x_*$ depends on $U/4t$ and is given by $x_*\approx 0.27$ for $U/4t\approx 1.525$. The long-range d-wave superconducting order emerges below a critical temperature $T_c$ for a hole concentration range centered at $x_{op}= (x_c+x_*)/2\approx 0.16$. It results from the effects of the residual interactions of the charge $c$ and spin-neutral two-spinon $s1$ fermions of Ref. \cite{companion2}, as a by-product of the short-range spin correlations. The spin subsystem provides through such interactions the energy needed for the effective pairing coupling between the $c$ fermions of the virtual-electron pair configurations.

One-electron scattering rate and normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity of the cuprates

Here we use a description of the electronic correlations contained in the Hubbard model on the square-lattice perturbed by very weak three-dimensional uniaxial anisotropy in terms of the residual interactions of charge $c$ fermions and spin-neutral composite two-spinon $s1$ fermions. Excellent quantitative agreement with the anisotropic linear-$ω$ one-electron scattering rate and normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity observed in experiments on hole-doped cuprates with critical concentrations $x_c\approx 0.05$ and $x_*\approx 0.27$ is achieved. Our results provide strong evidence that the normal-state linear-$T$ resistivity is a manifestation of low-temperature scale-invariant physics.

Global $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry of the Hubbard model on bipartite lattices

It is found that for on-site interaction $U\neq 0$ the local $SU(2)\times SU(2) \times U(1)$ gauge symmetry of the Hubbard model on a bipartite lattice with vanishing transfer integral $t=0$ can be lifted to a global $[SU(2)\times SU(2)\times U(1)]/Z_2^2=SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry in the presence of the kinetic-energy hopping term of the Hamiltonian with $t>0$. The generator of the new found hidden independent charge global U(1) symmetry is one half the rotated-electron number of singly-occupied sites operator. It is confirmed elsewhere that our results have important physical consequences concerning the further understanding of the unusual properties of the hole-doped cuprates.

The square-lattice quantum liquid of charge c fermions and spin-neutral two-spinon s1 fermions

The momentum bands, energy dispersions, and velocities of the charge $c$ fermions and spin-neutral two-spinon $s1$ fermions of a square-lattice quantum liquid referring to the Hubbard model on such a lattice of edge length $L$ in the one- and two-electron subspace are studied. The model involves the effective nearest-neighbor integral $t$ and on-site repulsion $U$ and can be experimentally realized in systems of correlated ultra-cold fermionic atoms on an optical lattice and thus our results are of interest for such systems. Our investigations profit from a general rotated-electron description, which is consistent with the model global $SO(3)\times SO(3)\times U(1)$ symmetry. For the model in the one- and two-electron subspace the discrete momentum values of the $c$ and $s1$ fermions are good quantum numbers so that in contrast to the original strongly-correlated electronic problem their interactions are residual. The use of our description renders an involved many-electron problem into a quantum liquid with some similarities with a Fermi liquid.

Dynamical Functions of a 1D Correlated Quantum Liquid

We extend to initial ground states with zero spin density m = 0 the expressions provided by the pseudofermion dynamical theory (PDT) for the finite-energy one- and two-electron spectral-weight distributions of a one-dimensional (1D) correlated metal with on-site particle-particle repulsion. The spectral-function expressions derived in this paper were used in recent successful and detailed theoretical studies of the finite-energy singular features in photoemission of the organic compound tetrathiafulvalene-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TTF-TCNQ) metallic phase. Our studies take into account spectral contributions from types of microscopic processes that do not occur for finite values of the spin density. Expressions for the spectral functions in the vicinity of the singular border lines which also appear in the TTF- TCNQ spectral-weight distribution are derived. In addition, the PDT expressions are generalized for electronic densities in the vicinity of half filling. Further details on the processes involved in the applications to TTF-TCNQ are reported. Our results are useful for the further understanding of the unusual spectral properties observed in low-dimensional organic metals and also provide expressions for the one- and two-atom spectral functions of a correlated quantum system of ultracold fermionic atoms in a 1D optical lattice with on-site two-atom repulsion.

The TTF finite-energy spectral features in photoemission of TTF-TCNQ: The Hubbard-chain description

A dynamical theory which accounts for all microscopic one-electron processes is used to study the spectral function of the 1D Hubbard model for the whole $(k, ω)$-plane, beyond previous studies which focused on the weight distribution in the vicinity of the singular branch lines only. While our predictions agree with those of the latter studies concerning the tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) related singular features in photoemission of the organic compound tetrathiafulvalene-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TTF-TCNQ) metallic phase, the generalized theory also leads to quantitative agreement concerning the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) related finite-energy spectral features, which are found to correspond to a value of the on-site repulsion $U$ larger than for TCNQ. Our study reveals the microscopic mechanisms behind the unusual spectral features of TTF-TCNQ and provides a good overall description of those features for the whole $(k, ω)$-plane.
