Electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ

We study the electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ by means of density-functional band theory, Hubbard model calculations, and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The experimental spectra reveal significant quantitative and qualitative discrepancies to band theory. We demonstrate that the dispersive behavior as well as the temperature-dependence of the spectra can be consistently explained by the finite-energy physics of the one-dimensional Hubbard model at metallic doping. The model description can even be made quantitative, if one accounts for an enhanced hopping integral at the surface, most likely caused by a relaxation of the topmost molecular layer. Within this interpretation the ARPES data provide spectroscopic evidence for the existence of spin-charge separation on an energy scale of the conduction band width. The failure of the one-dimensional Hubbard model for the {\it low-energy} spectral behavior is attributed to interchain coupling and the additional effect of electron-phonon interaction.

Finite-frequency optical absorption in 1D conductors and Mott-Hubbard insulators

The frequency-dependent conductivity is studied for the one-dimensional Hubbard model, using a selection rule, the Bethe ansatz, and symmetries associated with conservation laws. For densities where the system is metallic the absorption spectrum has two contributions, a Drude peak at $ω= 0$ separated by a pseudogap from a broad absorption band whose lower edge is characterized by a non-classical critical exponent. Our findings shed new light on the ``far infrared puzzle'' and other optical properties of metallic organic chain compounds.

Finite-Temperature Transport in Finite-Size Hubbard Rings in the Strong-Coupling Limit

We study the current, the curvature of levels, and the finite temperature charge stiffness, D(T,L), in the strongly correlated limit, U>>t, for Hubbard rings of L sites, with U the on-site Coulomb repulsion and t the hopping integral. Our study is done for finite-size systems and any band filling. Up to order t we derive our results following two independent approaches, namely, using the solution provided by the Bethe ansatz and the solution provided by an algebraic method, where the electronic operators are represented in a slave-fermion picture. We find that, in the U=\infty case, the finite-temperature charge stiffness is finite for electronic densities, n, smaller than one. These results are essencially those of spinless fermions in a lattice of size L, apart from small corrections coming from a statistical flux, due to the spin degrees of freedom. Up to order t, the Mott-Hubbard gap is Δ_{MH}=U-4t, and we find that D(T) is finite for n<1, but is zero at half-filling. This result comes from the effective flux felt by the holon excitations, which, due to the presence of doubly occupied sites, is renormalized to Φ^{eff}=ϕ(N_h-N_d)/(N_d+N_h), and which is zero at half-filling, with N_d and N_h being the number of doubly occupied and empty lattice sites, respectively. Further, for half-filling, the current transported by any eigenstate of the system is zero and, therefore, D(T) is also zero.

One-Particle Spectral Properties of 1D Mott-Hubbard Insulators

We use an exact {\it holon} and {\it spinon} Landau-liquid functional which describes the holon - spinon interactions at all scattering orders, to study correlation functions of integrable multicomponent many-particle problems showing both linear and non-linear energy bands. Motivated by recent photoemission experiments, we consider specific cases when the dominant non-linear band terms are quadratic and apply our results to the evaluation of the half-filling 1D Hubbard model one-particle spectral functions beyond conformal-field theory.

Curvature of Levels and Charge Stiffness of One-Dimensional Spinless Fermions

Combining the Bethe Ansatz with a functional deviation expansion and using an asymptotic expansion of the Bethe Ansatz equations, we compute the curvature of levels D_n at any filling for the one-dimensional lattice spinless fermion model. We use these results to study the finite temperature charge stiffness D(T). We find that the curvature of the levels obeys, in general, the relation D_n=D_0+δD_n, where D_0 is the zero-temperature charge stiffness and δD_n arises from excitations. Away from half filling and for the low-energy (gapless) eigenstates, we find that the energy levels are, in general, flux dependent and, therefore, the system behaves as an ideal conductor, with D(T) finite. We show that if gapped excitations are included the low-energy excitations feel an effective flux Φ^{eff} which is different from what is usually expected. At half filling, we prove, in the strong interacting limit and to order 1/V (V is the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction), that the energy levels are flux independent. This leads to a zero value for the curvature of levels D_n and, as consequence, to D(T)=0, proving an earlier conjecture of Zotos and Prelovšek.

Optical absorption edge in one-dimensional conductors

The frequency-dependent conductivity is studied for both the one-dimensional Hubbard model and a model of spinless fermions, using a selection rule, the Bethe ansatz energy eigenstates, and conformal invariance. For densities where the system is metallic the absorption spectrum has two contributions, a Drude peak at ω= 0 separated by a pseudo-gap from a broad absorption band whose lower edge is characterized by a non-classical critical exponent. Our findings are expected to shed new light on the ``far infrared puzzle'' of metallic organic chain compounds.

Complete Pseudohole and Heavy-Pseudoparticle Operator Representation for the Hubbard Chain

We introduce the pseudohole and heavy-pseudoparticle operator algebra that generates all Hubbard-chain eigenstates from a single reference vacuum. In addition to the pseudoholes already introduced for the description of the low-energy physics, this involves the heavy pseudoparticles associated with Hamiltonian eigenstates whose energy spectrum has a gap relatively to the many-electron ground state. We introduce a generalized pseudoparticle perturbation theory which describes the relevant finite-energy ground state transitions. In the present basis these excitations refer to a small density of excited pseudoparticles. Our operator basis goes beyond the Bethe-ansatz solution and it is the suitable and correct starting point for the study of the finite-frequency properties, which are of great relevance for the understanding of the unusual spectral properties detected in low-dimensional novel materials.

Instabilities of the Hubbard chain in a magnetic field

We find and characterize the instabilities of the repulsive Hubbard chain in a magnetic field by studing all response functions at low frequency ωand arbitrary momentum. The instabilities occur at momenta which are simple combinations of the (U=0) σ=\uparrow ,\downarrow Fermi points, \pm k_{Fσ}. For finite values of the on-site repulsion U the instabilities occur for single σelectron adding or removing at momenta \pm k_{Fσ}, for transverse spin-density wave (SDW) at momenta \pm 2k_F (where 2k_F=k_{F\uparrow}+k_{F\downarrow}), and for charge-density wave (CDW) and SDW at momenta \pm 2k_{F\uparrow} and \pm 2k_{F\downarrow}. While at zero magnetic field removing or adding single electrons is dominant, the presence of that field brings about a dominance for the transverse \pm 2k_F SDW over all the remaining instabilities for a large domain of $U$ and density n values. We go beyond conformal-field theory and study divergences which occur at finite frequency in the one-electron Green function at half filling and in the transverse-spin response function in the fully-polarized ferromagnetic phase.

Complete Pseudoparticle Representation and the Conductivity Spectrum of the Hubbard Chain

We use a complete pseudoparticle operator representation to study the explicit form of the finite-frequency conductivity for the Hubbard chain. Our study reveals that the spectral weight is mostly concentrated at the ω=0 Drude peak (except at density n=1) and at an absorption starting just below twice the value of the chemical potential whose ω-dependence we evaluate exactly. We also obtain the exact ωdependence of the higher-energy, less-pronounced absorption edges, whose weights vanish for large on-site interaction U.

Pseudoparticle Description of the 1D Hubbard Model Electronic Transport Properties

We extend the pseudoparticle transport description of the Hubbard chain to all energy scales. In particular we compute the mean value of the electric current transported by any Bethe-ansatz state and the transport masses of the charge carriers. We present numerical results for the optical conductivity of the model at half-filling for values of U/t=3 and 4. We show that these are in good agreement with the pseudoparticle description of the finite-energy transitions involving new pseudoparticle energy bands.

Magnetic-field and chemical-potential effects on the low-energy separation

We show that in the presence of a magnetic field the usual low-energy separation of the Hubbard chain is replaced by a ``$c$'' and ``$s$'' separation. Here $c$ and $s$ refer to small-momentum and low-energy independent excitation modes which couple both to charge and spin. Importantly, we find the exact generators of these excitations both in the electronic and pseudoparticle basis. In the limit of zero magnetic field these generators become the usual charge and spin fluctuation operators. The $c$ and $s$ elementary excitations are associated with the $c$ and $s$ pseudoparticles, respectively. We also study the separate pseudoparticle left and right conservation laws. In the presence of the magnetic field the small-momentum and low-energy excitations can be bosonized. However, the suitable bosonization corresponds to the $c$ and $s$ pseudoparticle modes and not to the usual charge and spin fluctuations. We evaluate exactly the commutator between the electronic-density operators. Its spin-dependent factor is in general non diagonal and depends on the interaction. The associate bosonic commutation relations characterize the present unconventional low-energy separation.

Topological ground-state excitations and symmetry in the many-electron one-dimensional problem

We consider the Hubbard chain in a magnetic field and chemical potential. We introduce a pseudohole basis where all states are generated from a single reference vacuum. This allows the evaluation for all sectors of Hamiltonian symmetry of the model of the expression of the $σ$ electron and hole operators at Fermi momentum $\pm k_{Fσ}$ and vanishing excitation energy in terms of pseudohole operators. In all sectors and to leading order in the excitation energy the electron and hole are constituted by one $c$ pseudohole, one $s$ pseudohole, and one {\it topological momenton}. These three quantum objects are confined in the electron or hole and cannot be separated. We find that the set of different pseudohole types which in pairs constitute the two electrons and two holes associated with the transitions from the $(N_{\uparrow }, N_{\downarrow })$ ground state to the $(N_{\uparrow }+1,N_{\downarrow })$, $(N_{\uparrow },N_{\downarrow }+1)$ and $(N_{\uparrow }-1, N_{\downarrow })$, $(N_{\uparrow },N_{\downarrow }-1)$ ground states, respectively, transform in the representation of the symmetry group of the Hamiltonian in the initial-ground-state sector of parameter space. We also find the pseudohole generators for the half-filling holon and zero-magnetic-field spinon. The pseudohole basis introduced in this paper is the only suitable for the extension of the present type of operator description to the whole Hilbert space.

Electrons, pseudoparticles, and quasiparticles in the one-dimensional many-electron problem

We generalize the concept of quasiparticle for one-dimensional (1D) interacting electronic systems. The $\uparrow $ and $\downarrow $ quasiparticles recombine the pseudoparticle colors $c$ and $s$ (charge and spin at zero magnetic field) and are constituted by one many-pseudoparticle {\it topological momenton} and one or two pseudoparticles. These excitations cannot be separated. We consider the case of the Hubbard chain. We show that the low-energy electron -- quasiparticle transformation has a singular charater which justifies the perturbative and non-perturbative nature of the quantum problem in the pseudoparticle and electronic basis, respectively. This follows from the absence of zero-energy electron -- quasiparticle overlap in 1D. The existence of Fermi-surface quasiparticles both in 1D and three dimensional (3D) many-electron systems suggests there existence in quantum liquids in dimensions 1$<$D$<$3. However, whether the electron -- quasiparticle overlap can vanish in D$>$1 or whether it becomes finite as soon as we leave 1D remains an unsolved question.

Electrons, pseudoparticles, and quasiparticles in one-dimensional interacting electronic systems

We find the singular transformation between the electron operator and the pseudoparticle operators for the Hubbard chain. We generalize the concept of quasiparticle to one-dimensional electronic systems which in 1D refers to many-pseudoparticle objects. We obtain explicit results for the electron renormalization factor, self energy, and vertex functions at the Fermi points. We also discuss the possible connection of our results to higher dimensions and explore the possibilities of instabilities in the interacting problem such as the formation of Cooper pairs.

Ground states of integrable quantum liquids

Based on a recently introduced operator algebra for the description of a class of integrable quantum liquids we define the ground states for all canonical ensembles of these systems. We consider the particular case of the Hubbard chain in a magnetic field and chemical potential. The ground states of all canonical ensembles of the model can be generated by acting onto the electron vacuum (densities $n<1$) or hole vacuum (densities $n>1$), suitable pseudoparticle creation operators. We also evaluate the energy gaps of the non-lowest-weight states (non - LWS's) and non-highest-weight states (non - HWS's) of the eta-spin and spin algebras relative to the corresponding ground states. For all sectors of parameter space and symmetries the {\it exact ground state} of the many-electron problem is in the pseudoparticle basis the non-interacting pseudoparticle ground state. This plays a central role in the pseudoparticle perturbation theory.

Pseudoparticle-operator description of an interacting Bose gas

We write the Hamiltonian of the Bose gas with two-body repulsive $δ$-function potential in a pseudoparticle operator basis which diagonalizes the problem via the Bethe ansatz. In this operator basis the original bosonic interactions are represented by zero-momentum forward-scattering interactions between Landau-liquid pseudoparticles. We find that this pseudoparticle operator algebra is complete: {\it all} the Hamiltonian eigenstates are generated by acting pseudoparticle operators on the system vacuum. It is shown that one boson of vanishing momentum and energy is a composite of a one-pseudoparticle excitation and a collective pseudoparticle excitation. These excitations have finite opposite momenta and cannot be decomposed. Our formalism enables us to calculate the various quantities which characterize the static and dynamic behavior of the system at low energies.

Conservation laws and bosonization in integrable Luttinger liquids

We examine and explain the Luttinger-liquid character of models solvable by the Bethe ansatz by introducing a suitable bosonic operator algebra. In the case of the Hubbard chain, this involves two bosonic algebras which apply to {\it all} values of $U$, electronic density, and magnetization. Only at zero magnetization does this lead to the usual charge - spin separation. We show that our ``pseudoparticle'' operator approach clarifies, unifies, and extends several recent results, including the existence of independent right and left equations of motion and the concept of ``pseudoparticle'' (also known as ``Bethe quasiparticle'').
