Tight-binding model of Pt-based jacutingaites as combination of the honeycomb and kagome lattices

We introduce a refined tight-binding (TB) model for Pt-based jacutingaite materials Pt$_{2}N$X$_{3}$, ($N$ = Zn, Cd, Hg; X = S, Se, Te), offering a detailed representation of the low-energy physics of its monolayers. This model incorporates all elements with significant spin-orbit coupling contributions, which are essential for understanding the topological energy gaps in these materials. Through comparison with first-principles calculations, we meticulously fitted the TB parameters, ensuring an accurate depiction of the energy bands near the Fermi level. Our model reveals the intricate interplay between the Pt $3e$ and $N$ metal orbitals, forming distinct kagome and honeycomb lattice structures. Applying this model, we explore the edge states of Pt-based jacutingaite monolayer nanoribbons, highlighting the sensitivity of the topological edge states dispersion bands to the nanostructures geometric configurations. These insights not only deepen our understanding of jacutingaite materials but also assist in tailoring their electronic properties for future applications.

Current modulation in graphene p-n junctions with external fields

In this work we describe a proposal for a graphene-based nanostructure that modulates electric current even in the absence of a gap in the band structure. The device consists of a graphene p-n junction that acts as a Veselago lens that focuses ballistic electrons on the output lead. Applying external (electric and magnetic) fields changes the position of the output focus, reducing the transmission. Such device can be applied to low power field effect transistors, which can benefit from graphene's high electronic mobility.

Snake states in graphene quantum dots in the presence of a p-n junction

We investigate the magnetic interface states of graphene quantum dots that contain p-n junctions. Within a tight-binding approach, we consider rectangular quantum dots in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field containing p-n, as well as p-n-p and n-p-n junctions. The results show the interplay between the edge states associated with the zigzag terminations of the sample and the snake states that arise at the p-n junction, due to the overlap between electron and hole states at the potential interface. Remarkable localized states are found at the crossing of the p-n junction with the zigzag edge having a dumb-bell shaped electron distribution. The results are presented as function of the junction parameters and the applied magnetic flux.

Topological confinement in graphene bilayer quantum rings

We demonstrate the existence of localized electron and hole states in a ring-shaped potential kink in biased bilayer graphene. Within the continuum description, we show that for sharp potential steps the Dirac equation describing carrier states close to the K (or K') point of the first Brillouin zone can be solved analytically for a circular kink/anti-kink dot. The solutions exhibit interfacial states which exhibit Aharonov-Bohm oscillations as functions of the height of the potential step and/or the radius of the ring.
