System size resonance in an attractor neural network

We study the response of an attractor neural network, in the ferromagnetic phase, to an external, time-dependent stimulus, which drives the system periodically two different attractors. We demonstrate a non-trivial dependance of the system via a system size resonance, by showing a signal amplification maximum at a certain finite size.

Feedback control in a collective flashing ratchet

An ensemble of Brownian particles in a feedback controlled flashing ratchet is studied. The ratchet potential is switched on and off depending on the position of the particles, with the aim of maximizing the current. We study in detail a protocol which maximizes the instant velocity of the center of mass of the ensemble at any time. This protocol is optimal for one particle and performs better than any periodic flashing for ensembles of moderate size, whereas is defeated by a random or periodic switching for large ensembles.

Paradoxical games and Brownian thermal engines

Two losing games, when alternated in a periodic or random fashion, can produce a winning game. This paradox occurs in a family of stochastic processes: if one combines two or more dynamics where a given quantity decreases, the result can be a dynamic system where this quantity increases. The paradox could be applied to a number of stochastic systems and has drawn the attention of researchers from different areas. In this paper we show how the phenomenon can be used to design Brownian or molecular motors, i.e., thermal engines that operate by rectifying fluctuations. We briefly review the literature on Brownian motors, pointing out that a new thermodynamics of Brownian motors will be fundamental to the understanding of most processes of energy transduction in molecular biology.

Stationary and Oscillatory Spatial Patterns Induced by Global Periodic Switching

We propose a new mechanism for pattern formation based on the global alternation of two dynamics neither of which exhibits patterns. When driven by either one of the separate dynamics, the system goes to a spatially homogeneous state associated with that dynamics. However, when the two dynamics are globally alternated sufficiently rapidly, the system exhibits stationary spatial patterns. Somewhat slower switching leads to oscillatory patterns. We support our findings by numerical simulations and discuss the results in terms of the symmetries of the system and the ratio of two relevant characteristic times, the switching period and the relaxation time to a homogeneous state in each separate dynamics.

Efficiency of Brownian Motors

The efficiency of different types of Brownian motors is calculated analytically and numerically. We find that motors based on flashing ratchets present a low efficiency and an unavoidable entropy production. On the other hand, a certain class of motors based on adiabatically changing potentials, named reversible ratchets, exhibit a higher efficiency and the entropy production can be arbitrarily reduced.
