Hadrons with Charm and Beauty

By combining potential models and QCD spectral sum rules (QSSR), we discuss the spectroscopy of the $(b\bar c)$ mesons and of the $(bcq)$, $(ccq)$ and $(bbq)$ baryons (${q}\equiv {d}$ or $s$), the decay constant and the (semi)leptonic decay modes of the $B_c$ meson. For the masses, the best predictions come from potential models and read: $M_{B_c} = (6255 \pm 20)$~MeV, $M_{B^*_c} = (6330 \pm 20)$~MeV, $M_{Λ(bcu)} = (6.93\pm 0.05)$~GeV, $M_{Ω(bcs)} = (7.00\pm 0.05)$~GeV, $M_{Ξ^*(ccu)} =(3.63\pm 0.05)$~GeV and $M_{Ξ^*(bbu)} = (10.21\pm 0.05)$~GeV. The decay constant $f_{B_c} = (2.94 \pm 0.21) f_π$ is well determined from QSSR and leads to: $Γ(B_c \rightarrow ν_ττ) = (3.0 \pm 0.4)( V_{cb}/0.037 )^2$ $\times 10^{10}$ s$^{-1}$.The uses of the vertex sum rules for the semileptonic decays of the $B_c$ show that the $t$-dependence of the form factors is much stronger than predicted by vector meson dominance. It also predicts the almost equal strength of about 0.30 $\times 10^{10}$ sec$^{-1}$ for the semileptonic rates $B_c$ into $B_s, B^*_s,η_c$ and J/$ψ$. Besides these phenomenological results, we also show explicitly how the Wilson coefficients of the $\langleα_s G^2\rangle$ and $\langle G^3\rangle$ gluon condensates already contain the full heavy quark- ($\langle\bar QQ\rangle$) and mixed- ($\langle\bar QGQ\rangle$) condensate contributions in the OPE.}

Elusive multiquark spectroscopy

A review is presented of past and recent attempts to build multiquark states within current models already describing ordinary mesons and baryons. This includes: coherence in the chromomagnetic interaction, tetraquarks with two heavy quarks, Steiner-tree models of confinement, and hadronic molecules, in particular in the hidden-charm sector. Some emphasis is put on the difficulties encountered when extrapolating toward higher configurations the dynamics of confining forces, starting from the simple case of a quark and an antiquark, or three quarks in a colour singlet.

The relevance of positivity in spin physics

Positivity reduces substantially the allowed domain for spin observables. We briefly recall some methods used to determine these domains and give some typical examples for exclusive and inclusive spin-dependent reactions.

Charmonium singlets, open charm and exotic hadrons

Caution is suggested on the comparison of the spin-singlet charmonium P-state with the centre of gravity of triplet states, when the mass splitting is of the order of a few MeV. The physics of new hidden-charm states X and Y is briefly reviewed. Perspectives for producing double-charm baryons and double-charm exotic mesons are discussed.

Can the X(3872) be a 1^{++} four-quark state?

We use QCD spectral sum rules to test the nature of the meson X(3872), assumed to be an exotic four-quark (c\bar{c}q\bar{q}) state with J^{PC}=1^{++}. For definiteness, we work with the current proposed recently by Maiani et al [1], at leading order in α_s, consider the contributions of higher dimension condensates and keep terms which are linear in the light quark mass m_q. We find M_X=(3925+- 127) MeV which is compatible, within the errors, with he experimental candidate X(3872), while the SU(3) breaking-terms lead to an unusual mass-splitting M_{X^{s}}-M_X=- (61+-30) MeV. The mass-difference between the neutral states due to isospin violation of about (2.6-3.9) MeV is much smaller than the value (8+-3) MeV proposed in [1]. For the b-quark, we predict M_{X_b}= (10144+-106) MeV for the X_b(b\bar{b}q \bar{q}), which is much below the {\bar B}B* threshold in contrast to the {\bar B}B* molecule prediction [2], and for the X_b^s(b\bar{b}s \bar{s}), a mass-splitting M_{X^s_{b}}-M_{X_b}=-(121+-182) MeV. Our analysis also indicates that the mass-splitting between the ground state and the radial excitation of about (225~250) MeV is much smaller than in the case of ordinary mesons and is (within the errors) flavour-independent. We also extract the decay constants, analogous to f_π, of such mesons, which are useful for further studies of their leptonic and hadronic decay widths. The uncertainties of our estimates are mainly due to the ones from the c and b quark masses.

A chromomagnetic mechanism for the X(3872) resonance

The chromomagnetic interaction, with proper account for flavour-symmetry breaking, is shown to explain the mass and coupling properties of the X(3872) resonance as a $J^{PC}$ = 1$^{++}$ state consisting of a heavy quark-antiquark pair and a light one. It is crucial to introduce all the spin-colour configurations compatible with these quantum numbers and diagonalise the chromomagnetic interaction in this basis. This approach thus differs from the molecular picture $D\bar {D}*$ and from the diquark-antidiquark picture.

Light and heavy multiquark spectroscopy

The dynamics of multiquark binding is revisited in the light of the recent experimental results. It is emphasized that some configurations mixing light and heavy flavours are among the most favourable for stable or metastable multiquarks. The nuclear-physics type of approach predicting the so-called hadron-hadron molecules is compared to direct studies in terms of quark interaction.

Neutron--Antineutron Oscillations at the Surface of Nuclei

We discuss some aspects of possible neutron--antineutron oscillations in nuclei. The phenomenon occurs mostly at the surface of nuclei, and hence {\sl i)} is not very sensitive to medium corrections and {\sl ii)} makes use of the antinucleon-nucleus interaction in a region probed by experiments at CERN.

Limits on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time from the stability of nuclei

We refute a recent claim by Nazaruk that the limits placed on the free--space neutron--antineutron oscillation time $τ_{n\bar n}$ can be improved by many orders of magnitude with respect to the estimate $τ_{n\bar n}>2(T_0/Γ)^{1/2}$, where $T_0$ is a measured limit on the annihilation lifetime of a nucleus and $Γ\sim 100$ MeV is a typical antineutron-nucleus annihilation width.

Proof of stability of the hydrogen molecule

We sketch two rigorous proofs of the stability of the hydrogen molecule in quantum mechanics. The first one is based on an extrapolation of variational estimates of the groundstate energy of a positronium molecule to arbitrary mass ratios. The second one is an extension of Heitler-London theory to nuclei of finite mass.
