Memory effects in nonlinear transport: kinetic equations and ratchet devices

We present a new method to derive kinetic equations for systems undergoing non-linear transport in the presence of memory effects. In the framework of mesoscopic nonequilibrium thermodynamics, we derive a generalized Fokker-Planck equation incorporating memory effects through time-dependent coefficients. As applications, we first discuss the non-Markovian dynamics of anomalous diffusion in a potential, analyzing the validity of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. In a second application, we propose a new ratchet mechanism in which the periodic driving acting on the particle is induced by the Onsager coupling of the diffusion current with an oscillating thermodynamic force.

Vortex ratchet

We present a new class of thermal ratchets operating under the action of a symmetry breaking non-Hermitian perturbation which rectifies thermal fluctuations, and driven by a unbiased periodic force. The peculiar non-Hermitian dynamics which follows causes energy transduction from the force to the system in such a way that an average `uphill' particle current is induced. We discuss physical realizations in assemblies of orientable particles, in itinerant oscillator models, and in problems of diffusion in disordered media.

Origin of the Violation of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem in Systems with Activated Dynamics

We analyze the validity of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for slow relaxation systems in the context of mesoscopic nonequilibrium thermodynamics. We demonstrate that the violation arises as a natural consequence of the elimination of fast variables in the description of a glassy system, and it is intrinsically related to the underlying activated nature of slow relaxation. In addition, we show that the concept of effective temperature, introduced to characterize the magnitude of the violation, is not robust since it is observable-dependent, can diverge, or even be negative.

Self-consistent theory of current and voltage noise in multimode ballistic conductors

Electron transport in a self-consistent potential along a ballistic two-terminal conductor has been investigated. We have derived general formulas which describe the nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, differential conductance, and low-frequency current and voltage noise assuming an arbitrary distribution function and correlation properties of injected electrons. The analytical results have been obtained for a wide range of biases: from equilibrium to high values beyond the linear-response regime. The particular case of a three-dimensional Fermi-Dirac injection has been analyzed. We show that the Coulomb correlations are manifested in the negative excess voltage noise, i.e., the voltage fluctuations under high-field transport conditions can be less than in equilibrium.

On the origin of plankton patchiness

Plankton is the productive base of aquatic ecosystems and plays a major role in the global control of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, after intensive study, the factors that drive its spatial distribution are still far from being clear. The models proposed so far show very limited agreement with actual data as many of their results are not consistent with field observations. Here we show that fluctuations and turbulent diffusion in standard prey-predator models are able to accurately and consistently explain plankton field observations at mesoscales (1-100 km). This includes not only the spatial pattern but also its temporal evolution. We explicitly elucidate the interplay between physical and biological factors, suggesting that the form in which small scale biotic fluctuations are transferred to larger scales may constitute one of the key elements in determining the spatial distribution of plankton in the sea.

Surface tension of liquids near the critical point

A simple analytical microscopic expression for the surface tension of liquids $γ$ is obtained which is in a good agreement with available data of numerical experiments. We apply the integral transformation that maps the fluid Hamiltonian onto the field-theoretical Hamiltonian and show that the order parameter of the effective Hamiltonian corresponds to the one-body potential in the fluid. Revealing the physical meaning of the order parameter allows calculation of $γ$.

Shot noise as a tool to probe an electron energy distribution

We discuss the possibility to employ the shot-noise measurements for the analysis of the energy resolved ballistic currents. Coulomb interactions play an essential role in this technique, since they lead to the shot-noise-suppression level which depends on the details of the energy profile.

Thermodynamics "beyond" local equilibrium

Nonequilibrium thermodynamics has shown its applicability in a wide variety of different situations pertaining to fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. As successful as it is, however, its current formulation considers only systems close to equilibrium --those satisfying the so-called local equilibrium hypothesis. Here we show that diffusion processes that occur far away from equilibrium can be viewed as at local equilibrium in a space that includes all the relevant variables in addition to the spatial coordinate. In this way, nonequilibrium thermodynamics can be used and the difficulties and ambiguities associated with the lack of a thermodynamic description disappear. We analyze explicitly the inertial effects in diffusion and outline how the main ideas can be applied to other situations.

Noise suppression by noise

We have analyzed the interplay between an externally added noise and the intrinsic noise of systems that relax fast towards a stationary state, and found that increasing the intensity of the external noise can reduce the total noise of the system. We have established a general criterion for the appearance of this phenomenon and discussed two examples in detail.

Stochastic model for the dynamics of interacting Brownian particles

Using the scheme of mesoscopic nonequilibrium thermodynamics, we construct the one- and two- particle Fokker-Planck equations for a system of interacting Brownian particles. By means of these equations we derive the corresponding balance equations. We obtain expressions for the heat flux and the pressure tensor which enable one to describe the kinetic and potential energy interchange of the particles with the heat bath. Through the momentum balance we analyze in particular the diffusion regime to obtain the collective diffusion coefficient in terms of the hydrodynamic and the effective forces acting on the Brownian particles.

mesoscopic approach to the slow dynamics of supercooled liquids and colloidal systems

We propose a method to analyze the dynamics of systems exhibiting slow relaxation which is based on mesoscopic non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The method allows us to obtain kinetic equations of the Fokker-Planck type for the probability functional and their corresponding Langevin equations. Our results are compared with the ones obtained by other authors.

Shot-noise suppression by Fermi and Coulomb correlations in ballistic conductors

We investigate the injection of degenerate Fermi-Dirac electrons into a multimode ballistic conductor under the space-charge limited regime. The nonequilibrium current fluctuations were found to be suppressed by both Coulomb and Fermi correlations. We show that the Fermi shot-noise suppression factor is limited below by the value 2kT/epsilon_F, where T is the temperature and epsilon_F the Fermi energy of the injected electrons. The Coulomb noise suppression factor may attain much lower values epsilon_F/2qU, because of its dependence on the applied bias U >> kT/q. The asymptotic behaviour of the overall shot-noise suppression factor in a high degenerate limit was found to be kT/qU, independently of the material parameters.

Mesoscopic non-equilibrium thermodynamics approach to the dynamics of polymers

We present a general formalism able to derive the kinetic equations of polymer dynamics. It is based on the application of nonequilibrium thermodynamics to analyze the irreversible processes taking place in the conformational space of the macromolecules. The Smoluchowski equation results from the analysis of the underlying diffusion process in that space within the scheme of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. We apply the method to different situations, concerning flexible, semiflexible and rod-like polymers and to the case of more concentrated solutions in which interactions become important.

Model of correlated sequential adsorption of colloidal particles

We present results of a new model of sequential adsorption in which the adsorbing particles are correlated with the particles attached to the substrate. The strength of the correlations is measured by a tunable parameter $σ$. The model interpolates between free ballistic adsorption in the limit $σ\to\infty$ and a strongly correlated phase, appearing for $σ\to0$ and characterized by the emergence of highly ordered structures. The phenomenon is manifested through the analysis of several magnitudes, as the jamming limit and the particle-particle correlation function. The effect of correlations in one dimension manifests in the increased tendency to particle chaining in the substrate. In two dimensions the correlations induce a percolation transition, in which a spanning cluster of connected particles appears at a certain critical value $σ_c$. Our study could be applicable to more general situations in which the coupling between correlations and disorder is relevant, as for example, in the presence of strong interparticle interactions.

Self-consistent theory of shot noise in nondegenerate ballistic conductors

A self-consistent theory of shot noise in ballistic two-terminal conductors under the action of long-range Coulomb correlations is presented. Analytical formulas for the electron distribution function and its fluctuation along the conductor, which account for the Coulomb correlations, have been derived. Based upon these formulas, the current-noise reduction factor has been obtained for biases ranging from thermal to shot-noise limits as dependent on two parameters: the ratio between the length of the sample and the Debye screening length λ=d/L_D and the applied voltage qU/k_BT. The difference with the formulas for a vacuum diode is discussed.

Suppression of non-Poissonian shot noise by Coulomb correlations in ballistic conductors

We investigate the current injection into a ballistic conductor under the space-charge limited regime, when the distribution function of injected carriers is an arbitrary function of energy F_c(epsilon). The analysis of the coupled kinetic and Poisson equations shows that the injected current fluctuations may be essentially suppressed by Coulomb correlations, and the suppression level is determined by the shape of F_c(epsilon). This is in contrast to the time-averaged quantities: the mean current and the spatial profiles are shown to be insensitive to F_c(epsilon) in the leading-order terms at high biases. The asymptotic high-bias behavior for the energy resolved shot-noise suppression has been found for an arbitrary (non-Poissonian) injection, which may suggest a new field of investigation on the optimization of the injected energy profile to achieve the desired noise-suppression level.

Energy transduction in periodically driven non-Hermitian systems

We show a new mechanism to extract energy from non-equilibrium fluctuations typical of periodically driven non-Hermitian systems. The transduction of energy between the driving force and the system is revealed by an \emph{anomalous} behavior of the susceptibility, leading to a diminution of the dissipated power and consequently to an improvement of the transport properties. The general framework is illustrated by the analysis of some relevant cases.

Shot-noise suppression in Schottky barrier diodes

We give a theoretical interpretation of the noise properties of Schottky barrier diodes based on the role played by the long range Coulomb interaction. We show that at low bias Schottky diodes display shot noise because the presence of the depletion layer makes negligible the effects of the Coulomb interaction on the current fluctuations. When the device passes from barrier to flat band conditions, the Coulomb interaction becomes active, thus introducing correlation between different current fluctuations. Therefore, the cross-over between shot and thermal noise represents the suppression due to long range Coulomb interaction of the otherwise full shot-noise. Similar ideas can be used to interpret the noise properties of others semiconductor devices.
