Polarization transfer in the $^{4}$He$(\vec{e},e' \vec{p}^{3}$H reaction

Polarization transfer in the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at a Q^2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)^2 was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with the same ratio for elastic ep scattering. The results are consistent with a recent fully relativistic calculation which includes a predicted medium modification of the proton form factor based on a quark-meson coupling model.

Relativistic nuclear structure effects in (e,e' vec{p})

Results for recoil nucleon induced polarization for $(e,e'\vec{p})$ are presented using various approximations for the relativistic nucleonic current, at the kinematics of a recent experiment at Bates. We see that the dynamical relativistic effects improve the agreement with the data. We make predictions for the induced normal polarization and responses for TJNAF 89-033 and Mainz A1/2-93 experiments.

Quaiselastic scattering from relativistic bound nucleons: Transverse-Longitudinal response

Predictions for electron induced proton knockout from the $p_{1/2}$ and $p_{3/2}$ shells in $^{16}$O are presented using various approximations for the relativistic nucleonic current. Results for the differential cross section, transverse-longitudinal response ($R_{TL}$) and left-right asymmetry $A_{TL}$ are compared at $|Q^2|=0.8$ (GeV/c)$^2$ corresponding to TJNAF experiment 89-003. We show that there are important dynamical and kinematical relativistic effects which can be tested by experiment.

Strange form factors of the proton: a new analysis of the neutrino (antineutrino) data of the BNL-734 experiment

We consider ratios of elastic neutrino(antineutrino)-proton cross sections measured by the Brookhaven BNL-734 experiment and use them to obtain the neutral current (NC) over charged current (CC) neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry. We discuss the sensitivity of these ratios and of the asymmetry to the electric, magnetic and axial strange form factors of the nucleon and to the axial cutoff mass M_A. We show that the effects of the nuclear structure and interactions on the asymmetry and, in general, on ratios of cross sections are negligible. We find some restrictions on the possible values of the parameters characterizing the strange form factors. We show that a precise measurement of the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry would allow the extraction of the axial and vector magnetic strange form factors in a model independent way. The neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry turns out to be almost independent on the electric strange form factor and on the axial cutoff mass.

Relativistic current densities for bound spin-orbit partners and the longitudinal-transverse response in (e,e'p) processes

Scalar, baryon and vector--current densities in coordinate and momentum space are calculated within a relativistic mean--field model. The role of the low components of the bound nucleon wave function is investigated in detail for different spin--orbit partner shells. We show that the relative importance of the negative--energy projection components can be explained from the different quantum numbers involved in the relativistic wave function. This fact has proved to be important in the analysis of various electron scattering observables even for low--medium values of the bound nucleon momentum.

The ratio of p and n yields in NC neutrino(antineutrino)-nucleus scattering and strange form factors of the nucleon

We calculate the ratio of proton and neutron yields in NC induced neutrino(antineutrino)-nucleus inelastic scattering at neutrino energies of about 1 GeV. We show that this ratio depends very weakly on the nuclear models employed and that in the neutrino and antineutrino cases the ratios have different sensitivity to the axial and vector strange form factors; moreover, the ratio of antineutrino--nucleus cross sections turns out to be rather sensitive to the electric strange form factor. We demonstrate that measurements of these ratios will allow to get information on the strange form factors of the nucleon in the region Q > 0.4 GeV^2.

Analysis of factorization in (e,e'p) reactions: A survey of the relativistic plane wave impulse approximation

The issue of factorization within the context of coincidence quasi-elastic electron scattering is reviewed. Using a relativistic formalism for the entire reaction mechanism and restricting ourselves to the case of plane waves for the outgoing proton, we discuss the meaning of factorization in the cross section and the role of the small components of the bound nucleon wave function.

Correlations and the Cross Section of Exclusive ($e,e'p$) Reactions for $^{16}$O

The reduced cross section for exclusive ($e,e'p$) reactions has been studied in DWIA for the example of the nucleus $^{16}$O using a spectral function containing effects of correlations. The spectral function is evaluated directly for the finite nucleus starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction within the framework of the Green's function approach. The emphasis is focused on the correlations induced by excitation modes at low energies described within a model-space of shell-model configurations including states up to the $sdg$ shell. Cross sections for the $p$-wave quasi-hole transitions at low missing energies are presented and compared with the most recent experimental data. In the case of the so-called perpendicular kinematics the reduced cross section derived in DWIA shows an enhancement at high missing momenta as compared to the PWIA result. Furthermore the cross sections for the $s$- and $d$-wave quasi-hole transitions are presented and compared to available data at low missing momenta. Also in these cases, which cannot be described in a model without correlations, a good agreement with the experiment is obtained.

Inelastic neutrino and antineutrino scattering on nuclei and ``strangeness'' of the nucleon

Possibilities to extract information on the strange form factors of the nucleon from neutrino (antineutrino) inelastic scattering on nuclei, in an energy range from 200 MeV to 1 GeV and more, are investigated in detail. All calculations are performed within two relativistic independent particle models (Fermi gas and shell model); the final state interactions of the ejected nucleon are taken into account through relativistic optical model potentials. We have shown that the values of the cross sections significantly depend on the nuclear model (especially in the lower energy range). However the NC/CC neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry in a medium--high energy range shows a rather small dependence on the model and allows to disentangle different values of the parameters that characterize the strange form factors. We have calculated also the ratio of the cross sections for inelastic NC scattering of neutrinos on nuclei, with the emission of a proton and of a neutron. Our calculations show that this ratio depends rather weakly on the nuclear model and confirm previous conclusions on the rather strong dependence of this ratio upon the axial strange form factors.

Relativistic analysis of the 208Pb(e,e'p)207Tl reaction at high momentum

The recent 208Pb(e,e'p)207Tl data from NIKHEF-K at high missing momentum (p_m>300 MeV/c) are compared to theoretical results obtained with a fully relativistic formalism previously applied to analyze data on the low missing momentum (p_m < 300 MeV/c) region. The same relativistic optical potential and mean field wave functions are used in the two p_m-regions. The spectroscopic factors of the various shells are extracted from the analysis of the low-p_m data and then used in the high-p_m region. In contrast to previous analyses using a nonrelativistic mean field formalism, we do not find a substantial deviation from the mean field predictions other than that of the spectroscopic factors, which appear to be consistent with both low- and high-p_m data. We find that the difference between results of relativistic and nonrelativistic formalisms is enhanced in the p_m<0 region that will be interesting to explore experimentally.

Exchange Current Corrections to Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering. I. Nuclear Matter

Relativistic exchange current corrections to the impulse approximation in low and intermediate energy neutrino--nucleus scattering are presented assuming non--vanishing strange quark form factors for constituent nucleons. Two--body exchange current operators which treat {\em all} $SU(3)$ vector and axial currents on an equal footing are constructed by generalizing the soft--pion dominance method of Chemtob and Rho. For charged current reactions, exchange current corrections can reduce the impulse approximation results by 5 to 10 \% depending on the nuclear density. A finite strange quark form factor may change the total cross section for neutral current scattering by 20\% while exchange current corrections are found to be sensitive to the nuclear density. Implications on the current LSND experiment to extract the strange quark axial form factor of the nucleon are discussed.

Parity violation in quasielastic electron scattering from closed-shell nuclei

The electromagnetic and weak neutral current matrix elements that enter in the analysis of parity-violating quasielastic electron scattering are calculated using a continuum nuclear shell model. New approximations to the on-shell relativistic one-body currents and relativistic kinematics for use in such models are developed and discussed in detail. Results are presented for three closed-shell nuclei of interest: $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb. The current work concludes with a study of the sensitivity of the resulting parity-violating asymmetries to properties of the nucleon form factors including the possible strangeness content of the nucleon.

Relativistic versus Nonrelativistic Optical Potentials in A(e,e'p)B Reactions

We investigate the role of relativistic and nonrelativistic optical potentials used in the analysis of ($e,e'p$) data. We find that the relativistic calculations produce smaller ($e,e'p$) cross sections even in the case in which both relativistic and nonrelativistic optical potentials fit equally well the elastic proton--nucleus scattering data. Compared to the nonrelativistic impulse approximation, this effect is due to a depletion in the nuclear interior of the relativistic nucleon current, which should be taken into account in the nonrelativistic treatment by a proper redefinition of the effective current operator.

Exchange Current Corrections to Neutrino--Nucleus Scattering

Relativistic exchange current corrections to neutrino--nucleus cross sections are presented assuming non--vanishing strange quark form factors for the constituent nucleons. For charged current processes the exchange current corrections can lower the impulse approximation results by 10\% while these corrections are found to be sensitive to both the nuclear density and the strange quark axial form factor of the nucleon for neutral current processes. Implications on the LSND experiment to determine this form factor are discussed.

Spin dependent Momentum Distributions in Deformed Nuclei

We study the properties of the spin dependent one body density in momentum space for odd--A polarized deformed nuclei within the mean field approximation. We derive analytic expressions connecting intrinsic and laboratory momentum distributions. The latter are related to observable transition densities in {\bf p}--space that can be probed in one nucleon knock--out reactions from polarized targets. It is shown that most of the information contained in the intrinsic spin dependent momentum distribution is lost when the nucleus is not polarized. Results are presented and discussed for two prolate nuclei, $^{21}$Ne and $^{25}$Mg, and for one oblate nucleus, $^{37}$Ar. The effects of deformation are highlighted by comparison to the case of odd--A nuclei in the spherical model.

Probing Deformed Orbitals with \vec{A}(\vec{e}, e' N)B reactions

We present results for response functions and asymmetries in the nuclear reactions 37\vec{Ar}(\vec{e},e'n)36Ar and 37\vec{K}(\vec{e},e' p)36Ar at quasifree kinematics. We compare PWIA results obtained using deformed HF wave functions with PWIA and DWIA results obtained assuming a spherical mean field. We show that the complex structure of the deformed orbitals can be probed by coincidence measurements with polarized beam and targets.

Spectroscopic Factors in $^{40}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb from $(e,e'p)$: Fully Relativistic Analysis

We present results for spectroscopic factors of the outermost shells in $^{40}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb, which have been derived from the comparison between the available quasielastic ($e,e'p$) data from NIKHEF-K and the corresponding calculated cross-sections obtained within a fully relativistic formalism. We include exactly the effect of Coulomb distortion on the electron wave functions and discuss its role in the extraction of the spectroscopic factors from experiment. Without any adjustable parameter, we find spectroscopic factors of about 70\%, consistent with theoretical predictions. We compare our results with previous relativistic and nonrelativistic analyses of ($e,e'p$) data. In addition to Coulomb distortion effects we discuss different choices of the nucleon current operator and also analyze the effects due to the relativistic treatment of the outgoing-distorted and bound nucleon wave functions.
