K_l3 form factor with N_f=2+1 dynamical domain wall fermions: A progress report

We present the latest results from the UKQCD/RBC collaborations for the K_l3 form factor with 2+1 flavours of dynamical domain wall quarks. Simulations are performed on 16^3x32x16 and 24^3x64x16 lattices with three values of the light quark mass, allowing for an extrapolation to the chiral limit. After interpolating to zero momentum transfer, we obtain the preliminary result f_+^{Kπ}(0)=0.9609(51) (or Δf = -0.0161(51)), which is in agreement with the result of Leutwyler & Roos.

Transverse spin structure of the nucleon from lattice QCD simulations

We present the first calculation in lattice QCD of the lowest two moments of transverse spin densities of quarks in the nucleon. They encode correlations between quark spin and orbital angular momentum. Our dynamical simulations are based on two flavors of clover-improved Wilson fermions and Wilson gluons. We find significant contributions from certain quark helicity flip generalized parton distributions, leading to strongly distorted densities of transversely polarized quarks in the nucleon. In particular, based on our results and recent arguments by Burkardt [Phys. Rev. D 72 (2005) 094020], we predict that the Boer-Mulders-function $h_1^\perp$, describing correlations of transverse quark spin and intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks, is large and negative for both up and down quarks.

Axial coupling constant of the nucleon for two flavours of dynamical quarks in finite and infinite volume

We present data for the axial coupling constant g_A of the nucleon obtained in lattice QCD with two degenerate flavours of dynamical non-perturbatively improved Wilson quarks. The renormalisation is also performed non-perturbatively. For the analysis we give a chiral extrapolation formula for g_A based on the small scale expansion scheme of chiral effective field theory for two degenerate quark flavours. Applying this formalism in a finite volume we derive a formula that allows us to extrapolate our data simultaneously to the infinite volume and to the chiral limit. Using the additional lattice data in finite volume we are able to determine the axial coupling of the nucleon in the chiral limit without imposing the known value at the physical point.

Light quark electromagnetic structure of baryons

Fascinating aspects of the light quark-mass behavior of baryon electromagnetic form factors are highlighted. Using FLIC fermions on $20^3 \times 40$ quenched ${\cal O}(a^2)$-improved gauge fields, we explore charge radii and magnetic moments at pion masses as light as 300 MeV. Of particular interest is chiral curvature of proton charge radii and magnetic moments, the environmental dependence of strange quark properties in hyperons, and the remarkable signature of quenched chiral-nonanalytic behavior in the magnetic moment of $Δ$ baryon resonances.

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors

Elastic electromagnetic nucleon form factors have long provided vital information about the structure and composition of these most basic elements of nuclear physics. The form factors are a measurable and physical manifestation of the nature of the nucleons' constituents and the dynamics that binds them together. Accurate form factor data obtained in recent years using modern experimental facilities has spurred a significant reevaluation of the nucleon and pictures of its structure; e.g., the role of quark orbital angular momentum, the scale at which perturbative QCD effects should become evident, the strangeness content, and meson-cloud effects. We provide a succinct survey of the experimental studies and theoretical interpretation of nucleon electromagnetic form factors.

Light meson masses and non-perturbative renormalisation in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD

We present results for the light meson masses, the bare strange quark mass and preliminary non-perturbative renormalisation of B_K in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD. The ensembles used were generated with the Iwasaki gauge action and have a volume of 16^3 x 32 with a fifth dimension size of 16 and an inverse lattice spacing of 1.6 GeV. These ensembles have u and d masses as low as one quarter of the strange quark mass. All data were generated jointly by the UKQCD and RBC collaborations on QCDOC machines.

Nucleon Form Factors: Probing the Chiral Limit

The electromagnetic form factors provide important hints for the internal structure of the nucleon and continue to be of major interest for experimentalists. For an intermediate range of momentum transfers the form factors can be calculated on the lattice. However, reliability of the results is limited by systematic errors due to the required extrapolation to physical quark masses. Chiral effective field theories predict a rather strong quark mass dependence in a range which was yet unaccessible for lattice simulations. We give an update on recent results from the QCDSF collaboration using gauge configurations with Nf=2, non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermions at very small quark masses down to 340 MeV pion mass, where we start to probe the relevant quark mass region.

K\toπl νform factor with N_f=2+1 dynamical domain wall fermions

We present the latest results from the UKQCD/RBC collaborations for the K_{l3} form factor with 2+1 flavours of dynamical domain wall quarks. Simulations are performed on 16^3x32x16 and 24^3x64x16 lattices with three values of the light quark mass, allowing for an extrapolation to the chiral limit. After interpolating to zero momentum transfer, we obtain the preliminary result f_+^{Kπ}(0)=0.9680(16), which is in excellent agreement with an earlier N_f=2 result.

Simulating at Realistic Quark Masses: Light quark masses

We present new results for light quark masses. The calculations are performed using two flavours of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We have reached lattice spacings as small as $a \sim 0.07$fm and pion masses down to $m_π \sim 340$MeV in our simulations. This gives us significantly better control on the chiral and continuum extrapolations.

Simulating at Realistic Quark Masses: Pseudoscalar Decay Constants and Chiral Logarithms

Due to improvements in computer performance and algorithms, the rapidly increasing cost for unquenched Wilson-type fermions with lighter quarks has been ameliorated and new simulations are now possible. Here we present results using two flavours of O(a)-improved Wilson fermions for meson decay constants at pseudoscalar masses down to 320MeV. Results are at several lattice spacings down to about 0.07fm and include a non-perturbative determination of the renormalisation constant. This enables us to attempt contact with (partially quenched) chiral perturbation theory.

Distribution Amplitudes of Pseudoscalar Mesons

We present results for the first two moments of the distribution amplitudes of pseudoscalar mesons. Using two flavors of non-perturbatively improved clover fermions and non-perturbative renormalization of the matrix elements we perform both chiral and continuum extrapolations and compare with recent results from models and experiments.

Moments of pseudoscalar meson distribution amplitudes from the lattice

Based on lattice simulations with two flavours of dynamical, O(a)-improved Wilson fermions we present results for the first two moments of the distribution amplitudes of pseudoscalar mesons at several values of the valence quark masses. By extrapolating our results to the physical masses of up/down and strange quarks, we find the first two moments of the K^+ distribution amplitude and the second moment of the pi^+ distribution amplitude. We use nonperturbatively determined renormalisation coefficients to obtain results in the MSbar scheme. At a scale of 4 GeV^2 we find a_2^pi=0.201(114) for the second Gegenbauer moment of the pion's distribution amplitude, while for the kaon, a_1^K=0.0453(9)(29) and a_2^K=0.175(18)(47).

Probing Nucleon Structure on the Lattice

The QCDSF/UKQCD collaboration has an ongoing program to calculate nucleon matrix elements with two flavours of dynamical O(a) improved Wilson fermions. Here we present recent results on the electromagnetic form factors, the quark momentum fraction and the first three moments of the nucleon's spin-averaged and spin-dependent generalised parton distributions, including preliminary results with pion masses as low as 320 MeV.

Strange Electric Form Factor of the Proton

By combining the constraints of charge symmetry with new chiral extrapolation techniques and recent low-mass quenched lattice QCD simulations of the individual quark contributions to the electric charge radii of the baryon octet, we obtain an accurate determination of the strange electric charge radius of the proton. While this analysis provides a value for G_E^s(Q^2=0.1 GeV^2) in agreement with the best current data, the theoretical error is comparable with that expected from future HAPPEx results from JLab. Together with the earlier determination of G_M^s, this result considerably constrains the role of hidden flavor in the structure of the nucleon.

Precision Electromagnetic Structure of Octet Baryons in the Chiral Regime

The electromagnetic properties of the baryon octet are calculated in quenched QCD on a 20^3 x 40 lattice with a lattice spacing of 0.128 fm using the fat-link irrelevant clover (FLIC) fermion action. FLIC fermions enable simulations to be performed efficiently at quark masses as low as 300 MeV. By combining FLIC fermions with an improved-conserved vector current, we ensure that discretisation errors occur only at O(a^2) while maintaining current conservation. Magnetic moments and electric and magnetic radii are extracted from the electric and magnetic form factors for each individual quark sector. From these, the corresponding baryon properties are constructed. Our results are compared extensively with the predictions of quenched chiral perturbation theory. We detect substantial curvature and environment sensitivity of the quark contributions to electric charge radii and magnetic moments in the low quark mass region. Furthermore, our quenched QCD simulation results are in accord with the leading non-analytic behaviour of quenched chiral perturbation theory, suggesting that the sum of higher-order terms makes only a small contribution to chiral curvature.

Determining the strange quark mass for 2-flavour QCD

Using the O(a) Symanzik improved action an estimate is given for the strange quark mass for unquenched (n_f=2) QCD. The determination is via the axial Ward identity (AWI) and includes a non-perturbative evaluation of the renormalisation constant. Numerical results have been obtained at several lattice spacings, enabling the continuum limit to be taken. Our results indicate a value for the strange quark mass (in the MS-bar scheme at a scale of 2 GeV) in the range 100 - 130 MeV. A comparison is also made with other recent lattice determinations of the strange quark mass using dynamical sea quarks.

$1^{-+}$ exotic meson at light quark masses

The mass of the $1^{-+}$ exotic meson, created with hybrid interpolating fields, is explored at light quark masses approaching 25 MeV ($m_π/ m_ρ\simeq 1/3$). Access to such light quark masses is facilitated by the use of the Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action. Additionally, we make use of large ($20^3 \times 40$) lattices to obtain good control of statistical and finite volume errors. Our results indicate that the $1^{-+}$ exotic exhibits significant curvature close the chiral limit, indicating previous linear extrapolations, far from the chiral regime, have overestimated the mass of the $1^{-+}$. We find for the first time in lattice studies a $1^{-+}$ mass in agreement with the $π_1 (1600)$ candidate. We also find a strangeness $\pm$1 $J^P = 1^-$ state with a mass close to 2 GeV.

Estimating the Unquenched Strange Quark Mass from the Lattice Axial Ward Identity

We present a determination of the strange quark mass for two flavours (nf=2) of light dynamical quarks using the axial Ward identity. The calculations are performed on the lattice using O(a) improved Wilson fermions and include a fully non-perturbative determination of the renormalisation constant. In the continuum limit we find in the MSbar scheme at 2GeV, ms = 111(6)(4)(6)MeV using the force scale r0 = 0.467fm, where the first error is statistical, the second and third are systematic due to the fit and scale uncertainties respectively. Results are also presented for the light quark mass and the chiral condensate. The corresponding results are also given for r0=0.5fm.
