High brightness CW electron beams from Superconducting RF photoemission gun

CW photoinjectors operating at high accelerating gradients promise to revolutionize many areas of science and applications. They can establish the basis for a new generation of monochromatic X-ray free electron lasers, high brightness hadron beams, or a new generation of microchip production. In this letter we report on the record-performing superconducting RF electron gun with $\textrm{CsK}_{2}\textrm{Sb}$ photocathode. The gun is generating high charge electron bunches (up to 10 nC/bunch) and low transverse emittances, while operating for months with a single photocathode. This achievement opens a new era in generating high-power beams with a very high average brightness.

Determination of the cluster-decay branching ratio from a near-threshold molecular state in $^{10}$Be

A puzzle has long existed for the $α$-cluster content in the near-threshold 7.54 MeV state of $^{10}$Be. A new measurement was conducted to measure the cluster-decay partial width of this state, using the reaction $\rm{^9Be}(\rm{^9Be}, \rm{^{10}Be}^{*} \rightarrow α+ \rm{^6He})\rm{^8Be}$ at 45 MeV beam energy. Special measures were taken to reduce the strong near-threshold background. The neutron-decay strength was also obtained based on the three-fold coincident measurement. A cluster-decay branching ratio of $(4.04 \pm 1.26)\times 10^{-4}$ is obtained, resulting in a reasonably large $α$-cluster spectroscopic factor. The present work confirms the formation of the $σ$-bond molecular rotational band headed by the 6.18 MeV state in $^{10}$Be.

Topological Magnetic Phase in the Candidate Weyl Semimetal CeAlGe

We report the discovery of topological magnetism in the candidate magnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlGe. Using neutron scattering we find this system to host several incommensurate, square-coordinated multi-$\vec{k}$ magnetic phases below $T_{\rm{N}}$. The topological properties of a phase stable at intermediate magnetic fields parallel to the $c$-axis are suggested by observation of a topological Hall effect. Our findings highlight CeAlGe as an exceptional system for exploiting the interplay between the nontrivial topologies of the magnetization in real space and Weyl nodes in momentum space.

Observing collisions beyond the secular approximation limit

Energy transfer through quantum coherences plays an essential role in diverse natural phenomena and technological applications, such as human vision, light-harvesting complexes, quantum heat engines, and quantum information and computing. The understanding of the long-lived coherence involved in these phenomena requires a detailed modeling of the system-bath interactions beyond the so-called secular and/or Markovian approximations. Despite continuous theoretical progress on understanding nonsecular dynamics in the last decades, convincing experimental observations are still lacking. By using the laser-kicked molecular rotor as a model system, we here experimentally unveil the nonsecular dynamics in the rotational relaxation of molecules due to thermal collisions. Specifically, the rotational coherence in gas-phase molecules is systematically probed and characterized by the recently discovered rotational alignment echoes featuring a decoherence and dissipation process which can only be explained by the nonsecular quantum master equations for modeling molecular collisions.

Witnessing quantum resource conversion within deterministic quantum computation using one pure superconducting qubit

Deterministic quantum computation with one qubit (DQC1) is iconic in highlighting that exponential quantum speedup may be achieved with negligible entanglement. Its discovery catalyzed heated study of general quantum resources, and various conjectures regarding their role in DQC1's performance advantage. Coherence and discord are prominent candidates, respectively characterizing non-classicality within localized and correlated systems. Here we realize DQC1 within a superconducting system, engineered such that the dynamics of coherence and discord can be tracked throughout its execution. We experimentally confirm that DQC1 acts as a resource converter, consuming coherence to generate discord during its operation. Our results highlight superconducting circuits as a promising platform for both realizing DQC1 and related algorithms, and experimentally characterizing resource dynamics within quantum protocols.

Highly dispersive magnons with spin-gap like features in the frustrated ferromagnetic S=1/2 chain compound Ca2Y2Cu5O10 detected by inelastic neutron scattering

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments in Ca2Y2Cu5O10 and map out the full one magnon dispersion which extends up to a record value of 53 meV for frustrated ferromagnetic (FM) edge-sharing CuO2 chain (FFESC) cuprates. A homogeneous spin-1/2 chain model with a FM nearest-neighbor (NN), an antiferromagnetic (AFM) next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) inchain, and two diagonal AFM interchain couplings (ICs) analyzed within linear spin-wave theory (LSWT) reproduces well the observed strong dispersion along the chains and a weak one perpendicularly. The ratio R=|J_{a2}/J_{a1}| of the FM NN and the AFM NNN couplings is found as ~0.23, close to the critical point Rc=1/4 which separates ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically correlated spiral magnetic ground states in single chains, whereas Rc>0.25 for coupled chains is considerably upshifted even for relatively weak IC. Although the measured dispersion can be described by homogeneous LSWT, the scattering intensity appears to be considerably reduced at ~11.5 and ~28 meV. The gap-like feature at 11.5 meV is attributed to magnon-phonon coupling whereas based on DMRG simulations of the dynamical structure factor the gap at 28 meV is considered to stem partly from quantum effects due to the AFM IC. Another contribution is ascribed to the intrinsic superstructure from the distorting incommensurate pattern of CaY cationic chains adjacent to the CuO2 ones. It gives rise to non-equivalent CuO4 units and Cu-O-Cu bond angles Phi and a resulting distribution of all exchange integrals. The J's fitted by homogeneous LSWT are regarded as average values. The record value of the FM NN integral J1=24 meV among FFESC cuprates can be explained by a non-universal Phi (not 90 deg.) and Cu-O bond length dependent anisotropic mean direct FM Cu-O exchange K_{pd}~120 meV. Enhanced K_{pd} values are also needed to compensate a significant AFM J_{dd} > ~6 meV.

SCUBA-2 observations of candidate starbursting protoclusters selected by Planck and Herschel-SPIRE

We present SCUBA-2 850-$μ$m observations of 13 candidate starbursting protoclusters selected using Planck and Herschel data. The cumulative number counts of the 850-$μ$m sources in 9/13 of these candidate protoclusters show significant overdensities compared to the field, with the probability $<$10$^{-2}$ assuming the sources are randomly distributed in the sky. Using the 250-, 350-, 500- and 850-$μ$m flux densities, we estimate the photometric redshifts of individual SCUBA-2 sources by fitting spectral energy distribution (SED) templates with an MCMC method. The photometric redshift distribution, peaking at $2 2$ protoclusters and the peak of the cosmic star-formation rate density (SFRD). We find that the 850-$μ$m sources in our candidate protoclusters have infrared luminosities of $L_{\mathrm{IR}}\gtrsim$10$^{12}L_{\odot}$ and star-formation rates of SFR=(500-1,500)$M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. By comparing with results in the literature considering only Herschel photometry, we conclude that our 13 candidate protoclusters can be categorised into four groups: six of them being high-redshift starbursting protoclusters, one being a lower-redshift cluster/protocluster, three being protoclusters that contain lensed DSFG(s) or are rich in 850-$μ$m sources, and three regions without significant Herschel or SCUBA-2 source overdensities. The total SFRs of the candidate protoclusters are found to be comparable or higher than those of known protoclusters, suggesting our sample contains some of the most extreme protocluster population. We infer that cross-matching Planck and Herschel data is a robust method for selecting candidate protoclusters with overdensities of 850-$μ$m sources.

Ba8MnNb6O24: a model two-dimensional spin-5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet

We successfully synthesized and characterized the triangular lattice anitferromagnet Ba$_8$MnNb$_6$O$_{24}$, which comprises equilateral spin-5/2 Mn$^{2+}$ triangular layers separated by six non-magnetic Nb$^{5+}$ layers. The detailed susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, and spin wave theory simulation on this system reveal that it has a 120 degree ordering ground state below T$_N$ = 1.45 K with in-plane nearest-neighbor exchange interaction ~0.11 meV. While the large separation 18.9 A between magnetic layers makes the inter-layer exchange interaction virtually zero, our results suggest that a weak easy-plane anisotropy is the driving force for the k$_m$ = (1/3 1/3 0) magnetic ordering. The magnetic properties of Ba$_8$MnNb$_6$O$_{24}$, along with its classical excitation spectra, contrast with the related triple perovskite Ba$_3$MnNb$_2$O$_9$, which shows easy-axis anisotropy, and the iso-structural compound Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$, in which the effective spin-1/2 Co$^{2+}$ spins do not order down to 60 mK and in which the spin dynamics shows sign of strong quantum effects.

Grid Inadequacy Assessment against Power Injection Diversity from Intermittent Generation, Dynamic Loads, and Energy Storage

The integration of more intermittent generation, energy storage, and dynamic loads on top of a competitive market environment requires future grids to handle increasing diversity of power injection states. Grid planners need new tools and metrics that can assess how vulnerable grids are against this future. To this end, we propose grid inadequacy metrics that expose grid inability to accommodate power injection diversity from such sources. We define the metrics based on a previously unexplored characterization of grid inadequacy, that is, the size of the DC power flow infeasible set relative to the size of the power injection set is indicative of inherent grid inadequacy to accommodate power injection diversity without intervention. We circumvent the difficulty of characterizing the high-dimensional sets involved using three approaches: one sampling-based approach and two approaches that project the sets in lower dimensions. Illustrative examples show how the metrics can reveal useful insights about a grid. As with other metrics, the proposed metrics are only valid relative to the assumptions used and cannot capture all intricacies of assessing grid inadequacy. Nevertheless, the metrics provide a new way of quantifying grid inadequacy that is potentially useful in future research and practice. We present possible use-cases where the proposed metrics can be used.

Search for $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ and $K_L \!\to\! π^0 X^0$ Decays at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

A search for the rare decay $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to $2.2 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target, a single event sensitivity of $( 1.30 \pm 0.01_{\rm stat} \pm 0.14_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-9}$ was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of $3.0 \times 10^{-9}$ for the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for $K_L \!\to\! π^0 X^0$ was also set as $2.4 \times 10^{-9}$ at the 90% C.L., where $X^0$ is an invisible boson with a mass of $135~{\rm MeV}/c^2$.

Optimal Needle Diameter, Shape, and Path in Autonomous Suturing

Needle shape, diameter, and path are critical parameters that directly affect suture depth and tissue trauma in autonomous suturing. This paper presents an optimization-based approach to specify these parameters. Given clinical suturing guidelines, a kinematic model of needle-tissue interaction was developed to quantify suture parameters and constraints. The model was further used to formulate constant curvature needle path planning as a nonlinear optimization problem. The optimization results were confirmed experimentally with the Raven II surgical system. The proposed needle path planning algorithm guarantees minimal tissue trauma and complies with a wide range of suturing requirements.

Snakes on a Spaceship - An Overview of Python in Heliophysics

Computational analysis has become ubiquitous within the heliophysics community. However, community standards for peer-review of codes and analysis have lagged behind these developments. This absence has contributed to the reproducibility crisis, where inadequate analysis descriptions and loss of scientific data have made scientific studies difficult or impossible to replicate. The heliophysics community has responded to this challenge by expressing a desire for a more open, collaborative set of analysis tools. This article summarizes the current state of these efforts and presents an overview of many of the existing Python heliophysics tools. It also outlines the challenges facing community members who are working towards the goal of an open, collaborative, Python heliophysics toolkit and presents guidelines that can ease the transition from individualistic data analysis practices to an accountable, communalistic environment.

Switchable Weyl nodes in topological Kagome ferromagnet Fe3Sn2

The control of topological quantum materials is the prerequisite for novel devices exploiting these materials. Here we propose that the room temperature ferromagnet Fe3Sn2, whose fundamental building blocks are Kagome bilayers of iron, hosts Weyl nodes at the Fermi level which can move in momentum space depending on the direction of the magnetization, itself readily controlled either by modest external fields or temperature. The proposal is derived from density functional calculations, including a mean field treatment of Hubbard repulsion U, which have been validated by comparison with angle-resolved photoemission data. Ferromagnetism with magnetization along certain directions is shown to lift the Weyl degeneracies, while at the same time inducing texture in the quasiparticle spin polarizations mapped in reciprocal space. In particular, the polarization is attenuated and then rotated from parallel to perpendicular to antiparallel to the magnetization as Weyl points derived from crossing of majority and minority spin bands are traversed.

Lattice distortion in the spin-orbital entangled state in RVO3 perovskites

We report a thorough study of Y$_{0.7}$La$_{0.3}$VO$_3$ single crystals by measuring magnetic properties, specific heat, thermal conductivity, x-ray and neutron diffraction with the motivation of revealing the lattice response to the spin-orbital entanglement in \textit{R}VO$_3$. Upon cooling from room temperature, the orbitally disordered paramagnetic state changes around T*$\sim$220\,K to spin-orbital entangled state which is then followed by a transition at T$_N$=116\,K to C-type orbital ordered (OO) and G-type antiferromagnetic ordered (AF) ground state. In the temperature interval T$_N<T<T^*$, the VO$_{6/2}$ octahedra have two comparable in-plane V-O bonds which are longer than the out-of-plane V-O1 bond. This local structural distortion supports the spin-orbital entanglement of partially filled and degenerate yz/zx orbitals. However, this distortion is incompatible with the steric octahedral site distortion intrinsic to orthorhombic perovskites. Their competition induces a second order transition from the spin-orbital entangled state to C-OO/G-AF ground state where the long range OO suppresses the spin-orbital entanglement. Our analysis suggests that the spin-orbital entangled state and G-OO are comparable in energy and compete with each other. Rare earth site disorder favors the spin-orbital entanglement rather than a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion. The results also indicate for LaVO$_3$ a C-OO/G-AF state in T$_t$\,$\leq$\,T\,$\leq$T$_N$ and an orbital flipping transition at T$_t$.

Fast Molecular Outflow from a Dusty Star-Forming Galaxy in the Early Universe

Galaxies grow inefficiently, with only a few percent of the available gas converted into stars each free-fall time. Feedback processes, such as outflowing winds driven by radiation pressure, supernovae or supermassive black hole accretion, can act to halt star formation if they heat or expel the gas supply. We report a molecular outflow launched from a dust-rich star-forming galaxy at redshift 5.3, one billion years after the Big Bang. The outflow reaches velocities up to 800 km/s relative to the galaxy, is resolved into multiple clumps, and carries mass at a rate within a factor of two of the star formation rate. Our results show that molecular outflows can remove a large fraction of the gas available for star formation from galaxies at high redshift.

Cooling a polaronic liquid: Phase mixture and pseudogap-like spectra in superconducting $Ba_{1-x}K_{x}BiO_{3}$

Many complex electronic systems exhibit so-called pseudogaps, which are poorly-understood suppression of low-energy spectral intensity in the absence of an obvious gap-inducing symmetry. Here we investigate the superconductor $Ba_{1-x}K_{x}BiO_{3}$ near optimal doping, where unconventional transport behavior and evidence of pseudogap(s) have been observed above the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$, and near an insulating phase with long-range lattice distortions. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals a dispersive band with vanishing quasiparticle weight and "tails" of deep-energy intensity that strongly decay approaching the Fermi level. Upon cooling below a transition temperature $T_{p} > T_{c}$, which correlates with a change in the slope of the resistivity vs. temperature, a partial transfer of spectral weight near $E_{F}$ into the deep-binding energy tails is found to result from metal-insulator phase separation. Combined with simulations and Raman scattering, our results signal that insulating islands of ordered bipolarons precipitate out of a disordered polaronic liquid and provide evidence that this process is regulated by a crossover in the electronic mean free path.

Magnetic Properties of the low dimensional BaM$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$(M= Cu, Co, Mn) system

We performed susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements on single crystalline BaMn$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$. Based on the results, we revisited its spin structure with a more accurate solution and constructed a magnetic phase diagram with applied field along the $b$-axis, which contains a spin flop transition around 6 T. We also used susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat results confirmed the ferrimagnetic-like magnetism in polycrystalline BaCo$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$. Furthermore, we performed LSDA + U calculations for the BaM$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$ (M = Cu, Co, and Mn) system. Our discussions based on the comparison among the obtained magnetic exchange interactions suggest the different structures and electronic configurations are the reasons for the different magnetic properties among the system members.

Lattice distortion effects on the frustrated spin-1 triangular-antiferromagnet A3NiNb2O9 (A = Ba, Sr and Ca)

In the geometrically frustrated materials with the low-dimensional and small spin moment, the quantum fluctuation could interfere with the complicated interplay of the spin, electron, lattice and orbital interactions, and host exotic ground states such as nematic spin-state and chiral liquid phase. While the quantum phases of the one-dimensional chain and S - 1/2 two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) had been more thoroughly investigated by both theorists and experimentalists, the work on S = 1 TLAF has been limited. We induced the lattice distortion into the TLAFs, A3NiNb2O9 (A = Ba, Sr, and Ca) with S (Ni2+) = 1, and applied the thermodynamic, magnetic and neutron scattering measurements. Although A3NiNb2O9 kept the non-collinear 120° antiferromagnetic phase as the ground state, the Ni2+-lattice changed from the equilateral triangle (A = Ba) into isosceles triangle (A = Sr and Ca). The inelastic neutron scattering data were simulated by the linear spin-wave theory, and the competition between the single-ion anisotropy and the exchange anisotropy from the distorted lattice was discussed.
