Influence of the gravitational darkening effect on the spectrum of a hot, rapidly rotating neutron star

In this paper, we discuss the influence of the gravitational darkening effect on the emergent spectrum of a fast-rotating, flattened neutron star. Model atmosphere codes always calculate spectra of emergent intensities and fluxes emitted from the unit surface on the star in plane-parallel geometry. Here we took a step beyond that and calculated a small sample grid of theoretical spectra integrated over the distorted surface of a sample rotating neutron star seen by a distant observer at various inclination angles. We assumed parameters like two dimensionless angular velocities $\barΩ^2=0.30$ and 0.60, the effective temperature of a nonrotating star $T_{\rm eff}=2.20\times 10^7\,$K, the logarithm of the surface gravity of a spherical star $\log(g)=14.40$ (cgs), and inclination angles from $i=0^\circ$ to $i=90^\circ$ with step $Δi=10^\circ$. We assumed that the atmosphere consists of a mixture of hydrogen and helium with $M_{\rm H}=0.70$ and $M_{\rm He}=0.30$. At each point on the neutron star surface, we calculated true intensities for local values of parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$ and $\log(g)$), and these monochromatic intensities are next integrated over the whole surface to obtain the emergent spectrum. In this paper, we compute for the first time theoretical spectra of the fast-rotating neutron star. Our work clearly shows that the gravitational darkening effect strongly influences the spectrum and should be included in realistic models of the atmospheres of rotating neutron stars.

Catalog of averaged magnetic phase curves of stars: the second edition

Magnetized stars exhibit periodic variations of their longitudinal global magnetic fields, $B_e$, owing to rotation. Here, we present the second catalog of averaged stellar magnetic rotational phase curves and their parameters derived from a compilation of the published observational data and personal communications for 350 stars of various spectral types, which were published up to the end of December 2019. Magnetic Ap and Bp stars constitute the most numerous subset in the catalog (215 objects). Phase curves were obtained by fitting either a sinusoid or a double sine wave to series of the observed $B_e$ measurements using the least squares method. For some stars, we present magnetic phase curves derived from time series of the surface magnetic field, $B_s$, or obtained improved values of the rotational period, $P_{\rm rot}$. We have also identified eight stars in our catalog that host planets or planetary systems.

Precision of mass and radius determination for neutron star using the ATHENA mission

In this paper we show that X-ray spectral observations of the ATHENA mission, which is planned to launch in 2031, can constrain the equation of state of superdense matter. We use our well-constrained continuum fitting method for mass and radius determination of the neutron star. Model spectra of the emission from a neutron star were calculated using the atmosphere code ATM24. In the next step, those models were fitted to a simulated spectra of the neutron star calculated for ATHENA's WFI detector, using the satellite calibration files. To simulate the spectra we assumed three different values of effective temperatures, surface gravities and gravitational redshifts. There cases are related to the three different neutron star masses and radii. This analysis allows us to demonstrate the precision of our method and demonstrate the need for a fast detector onboard of ATHENA. A large grid of theoretical spectra was calculated with various parameters and a hydrogen-helium-iron composition of solar proportion. These spectra were fitted to the simulated spectrum to estimate the precision of mass and radius determination. In each case, we obtained very precise mass and radius values with errors in the range 3--10% for mass and in the range 2--8% for radius within the 1-sigma confidence error. We show here that with the ATHENA WFI detector, such a determination could be used to constrain the equation of state of superdense neutron star matter.

On the Compton scattering redistribution function in plasma

Compton scattering is the dominant opacity source in hot neutron stars, accretion disks around black holes and hot coronae. We collected here a set of numerical expressions of the Compton scattering redistribution functions for unpolarized radiation (RF), which are more exact than the widely used Kompaneets equation. The principal aim of this paper is presentation of the RF by Guilbert (1981) which is corrected for the computational errors in the original paper. This corrected RF was used in the series of papers on model atmosphere computations of hot neutron stars. We have also organized four existing algorithms for the RF computations into a unified form ready to use in radiative transfer and model atmosphere codes. The exact method by Nagirner and Poutanen (1993) was numerically compared to all other algorithms in a very wide spectral range from hard X-rays to radio waves. Sample computations of the Compton scattering redistribution functions in thermal plasma were done for temperatures corresponding to the atmospheres of bursting neutron stars and hot intergalactic medium. Our formulae are also useful to the study Compton scattering of unpolarised microwave background radiation in hot intra-cluster gas and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We conclude, that the formulae by Guilbert (1981) and the exact quantum mechanical formulae yield practically the same redistribution functions for gas temperatures relevant to the atmospheres of X-ray bursting neutron stars, $T \le 10^8$ K.

Magnetic and pulsational variability of Przybylski's star (HD101065)

Since its discovery more than half a century ago Przybylski's star (HD101065) continues to excite the astronomical community by the unusual nature of its spectrum, exhibiting exotic element abundances. This star was also the first magnetic chemically peculiar A-type star for which the presence of rapid oscillations was established. Our analysis of newly acquired and historic longitudinal magnetic field measurements indicates that Przybylski's star is also unusual with respect to its extremely slow rotation. Adopting a dipolar structure for the magnetic field and using a sine wave fit to all reported longitudinal magnetic field values over the last 43yr, we find a probable rotation period P_rot ~ 188yr, which however has to be considered tentative as it does not represent a unique solution and has to be verified by future observations. Additionally, based on our own spectropolarimetric material obtained with HARPSpol, we discuss the impact of the anomalous structure of its atmosphere, in particular of the non-uniform horizontal and vertical distributions of chemical elements on the magnetic field measurements and the pulsational variability. Anomalies related to the vertical abundance stratification of Pr and Nd are for the first time used to establish the presence of a radial magnetic field gradient.

Accurate ray tracing of realistic neutron star atmospheres for constraining their parameters

Thermal dominated X-ray spectra of neutron stars in quiescent transient X-ray binaries and neutron stars that undergo thermonuclear bursts are sensitive to mass and radius. The mass-radius relation of neutron stars depends on the equation of state that governs their interior. Constraining this relation accurately is thus of fundamental importance to understand the nature of dense matter. In this context we introduce a pipeline to calculate realistic model spectra of rotating neutron stars with hydrogen and helium atmospheres. An arbitrarily fast rotating neutron star with a given equation of state generates the spacetime in which the atmosphere emits radiation. We use the Lorene/nrotstar code to compute the spacetime numerically and the ATM24 code to solve the radiative transfer equations self-consistently. Emerging specific intensity spectra are then ray-traced through the neutron star's spacetime from the atmosphere to a distant observer with the Gyoto code. Here, we present and test our fully relativistic numerical pipeline. To discuss and illustrate the importance of realistic atmosphere models we compare our model spectra to simpler models like the commonly used isotropic color-corrected blackbody emission. We highlight the importance of considering realistic model-atmosphere spectra together with relativistic ray tracing to obtain accurate predictions. We also insist on the crucial impact of the star's rotation on the observables. Finally, we close a controversy that has been appearing in the literature in the recent years regarding the validity of the ATM24 code.

On the global and local magnetic fields in flare stars. Study of YZ CMi and OT Ser

Global magnetic fields of flare stars can evolve rapidly, in time scale of hundreds or dozens of days. We believe, that such changes result from rapid superposition of local magnetic fields generated by differential rotation of those stars. We discuss possible mechanisms of generation and dissipation of local and global magnetic fields in sample flare stars OT Ser and YZ CMi. We propose mechanism of magnetic braking of these stars, in which differential rotation generates local magnetic fields, and eventually energy accumulated in local fields is radiated away by flares. We obtained estimates of the rotational energy and the energy of the global magnetic field of OT Ser and YZ CMi. We also show that the energy of the local magnetic fields dissipated during superflare of YZ CMi on 9 February 2008 (UT 20:22:00) did not influence the global magnetic field of this star.

Catalog of averaged magnetic phase curves of stars

The second version of the catalog contains information about 275 stars of different types. During the time that has elapsed since the creation of the first catalog, situation fundamentally changed primarily due to the significant increase of accuracy of magnetic fields (MF) measurements. Up to now global magnetic field were discoverd and measured in stars of many types and their behavior partially was studied. Magnetic behavior of Ap Bp stars is the most thoroughly studied. The catalog contains information about 182 such objects. The main goals for the construction of the catalog are: 1. Review and summarize our kowledge about magnetic behavior of different types of stars. 2. The whole data are uniformly presented and processed which will allow one to perform statistical analysis of the variability of the (longitudinal) magnetic fields of stars. 3. The informations are presented in the most convenient form for testing different theoretical models of different kind. 4. The catalog will be useful for the development of observational programs.

The appearance of non-spherical systems. Application to LMXB

We study the appearance of the neutron star - accretion disk system as seen by a distant observer in the UV/X-ray domain. The observed intensity spectra are computed assuming non-spherical geometry of the whole system, in which outgoing spectrum is not represented by the flux spectrum, the latter being valid for spherically symmetric objects. Intensity spectra of our model display double bumps in UV/X-ray energy domains. Such structure is caused by the fact that the the source is not spherically symmetric, and the proper integration of intensity over emitted area is needed to reproduce observed spectral shape. Relative normalization of double bump is self consistently computed by our model. X-ray spectra of such a type were often observed in LMXB with accretion disk, ultra luminous X-ray sources, and accreting black hole systems with hot inner compact corona. Our model naturally explains high energy broadening of the disk spectrum observed in some binaries. We attempted to fit our model to X-ray data of XTE~J1709-267 from {\it XMM-Newton}. Unfortunately, the double intensity bump predicted by our model for LMXB is located in soft X-ray domain, uncovered by existing data for this source.

On the evolution of the magnetic field of Ap star $α^2$ CVn

New high-precision measurements of the longitudinal magnetic field of Ap stars suggest the existence of secular intrinsic variations of the global magnetic field in some stars. We argue that such changes are apparent in the Ap star $α^2$ CVn in the time scale of $\sim$ 10 years, which results from the analysis of literature data. Therefore, such an observation implies, that the rate of magnetic field evolution of Ap stars is much higher than was previously thought.

X-ray-binary spectra in the lamp post model

[Abridged] Context. The high-energy radiation from black-hole binaries may be due to the reprocessing of a lamp located on the black hole axis, emitting X-rays. The observed spectrum is made of 3 components: the direct spectrum; the thermal bump; and the reflected spectrum made of the Compton hump and the iron-line complex. Aims. We aim at computing accurately the complete reprocessed spectrum (thermal bump + reflected) of black-hole binaries over the entire X-ray band. We also determine the strength of the direct component. Our choice of parameters is adapted to a source showing an important thermal component. Methods. We compute in full GR the illumination of a thin disk by a lamp along the rotation axis. We use the ATM21 radiative transfer code to compute the spectrum emitted along the disk. We ray trace this local spectrum to determine the reprocessed spectrum as observed at infinity. We discuss the dependence of the local and ray-traced spectra on the emission angle and spin. Results. We show the importance of the angle dependence of the total disk specific intensity spectrum emitted by the illuminated atmosphere when the thermal disk emission if fully taken into account. High spin implies high temperature in the inner regions, so the emitted thermal disk spectrum covers the iron-line complex. As a result we locally observe absorption lines produced in the hot disk atmosphere. Absorption lines are narrow and disappear after ray tracing the local spectrum. Conclusions. Our results mainly highlight the importance of considering the angle dependence of the local spectrum when computing reprocessed spectra, as was already found in a recent study. The main new result of our work is to show the importance of computing the thermal bump of the spectrum, as this feature can change considerably the observed iron-line complex.

Periods of magnetic field variations in the Ap star $γ$ Equulei (HD 201601)

This paper presents a series of 95 new measurements of the longitudinal (effective) magnetic field $B_e$ of the Ap star $γ$ Equ (HD 201601). Observations were obtained at the coudé focus of the 1-m reflector at the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO RAS) in Russia over a time period of 4190 days (more than 11 years). We compiled a long record of $B_e$ points, adding our measurements to all published data. The time series of magnetic data consists of 395 $B_e$ points extending for 24488 days, or over 67 years. Various methods of period determination were examined for the case in which the length of the observed time series is rather short and amounts only to ~69 percent of the period. We argue that the fitting of a sine wave to the observed $B_e$ points by least squares yields the most reliable period in the case of $γ$ Equ. Therefore, the best period for long-term magnetic variations of $γ$ Equ, and hence the rotational period, is $P_{\rm rot}=35462.5 \pm 1149$ days $= 97.16 \pm 3.15$ years.

33 Lib - analog of gamma Equ

In this paper we study periodic variability of the magnetic field in the Ap star 33 Lib. We found that its most probable period equals 83.5 years. There exist also possible shorter periods: 11.036 days, 7.649 days and 4.690 days. Analysis of the magnetic behavior of 33 Lib allows us to conclude, that the star shows the second longest period the slow rotator gamma Equ, the latter star with the period of 97 years.

Staying star gamma Equ

We determined rotational period of practically nonrotating Ap star gamma Equ and claim $P_{\rm rot}= 97$ years. This period is about 35000 times larger than the average rotational period among stars of the same spectral class. Paper discusses possible mechanism explaining the origin of this phenomenon.

Pressure Shift and Gravitational Red Shift of Balmer Lines in White Dwarfs. Rediscussion

The Stark-induced shift and asymmetry, the so-called pressure shift (PS) of $H_α$ and $H_β$ Balmer lines in spectra of DA white dwarfs (WDs), as masking effects in measurements of the gravitational red shift in WDs, have been examined in detail. The results are compared with our earlier ones from before a quarter of a century (Grabowski et al. 1987, hereafter ApJ'87; Madej and Grabowski 1990). In these earlier papers, as a dominant constituent of the Balmer-line-profiles, the standard, symmetrical Stark line profiles, shifted as the whole by PS-effect, were applied to all spectrally active layers of the WD atmosphere. At present, in each of the WD layers, the Stark-line-profiles (especially of $H_β$) are immanently asymmetrical and shifted due to the effects of strong inhomogeneity of the perturbing fields in plasma. To calculate the Stark line-profiles in successive layers of the WD atmosphere we used the modified Full Computer Simulation Method (mFCSM), able to take adequately into account the complexity of local elementary quantum processes in plasma. In the case of the $H_α$ line, the present value of Stark-induced shift of the synthetic $H_α$ line-profile is about twice smaller than the previous one (ApJ'87) and it is negligible in comparison with the gravitational red shift. In the case of the $H_β$ line, the present value of Stark-induced shift of the synthetic $H_β$ line-profile is about twice larger than the previous one. The source of this extra shift is the asymmetry of $H_β$ peaks.

Disk emission and atmospheric absorption lines in black hole candidate 4U 1630-472

We re-analyzed SUZAKU data of the black hole candidate 4U 1630-472 being in the high/soft state. We show that the continuum X-ray spectrum of 4U 1630-472 with iron absorption lines can be satisfactorily modeled by the spectrum from an accretion disk atmosphere. Absorption lines of highly ionized iron originating in hot accretion disk atmosphere can be an alternative or complementary explanation to the wind model usually favored for these type of sources. We model continuum and line spectra using a single model. Absorption lines of highly ionized iron can origin in upper parts of the disk atmosphere which is intrinsically hot due to high disk temperature. Iron line profiles computed with natural, thermal and pressure broadenings match very well observations. We showed that the accretion disk atmosphere can effectively produce iron absorption lines observed in 4U 1630-472 spectrum. Absorption line arising in accretion disk atmosphere is the important part of the observed line profile, even if there are also other mechanisms responsible for the absorption features. Nevertheless, the wind theory can be an artifact of the fitting procedure, when the continuum and lines are fitted as separate model components.
