General structure of the solutions of the Hamiltonian constraints of gravity

A general framework for the solutions of the constraints of pure gravity is constructed. It provides with well defined mathematical criteria to classify their solutions in four classes. Complete families of solutions are obtained in some cases. A starting point for the systematic study of the solutions of Einstein gravity is suggested.

Nab: Measurement Principles, Apparatus and Uncertainties

The Nab collaboration will perform a precise measurement of 'a', the electron-neutrino correlation parameter, and 'b', the Fierz interference term in neutron beta decay, in the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the SNS, using a novel electric/magnetic field spectrometer and detector design. The experiment is aiming at the 10^{-3} accuracy level in (Delta a)/a, and will provide an independent measurement of lambda = G_A/G_V, the ratio of axial-vector to vector coupling constants of the nucleon. Nab also plans to perform the first ever measurement of 'b' in neutron decay, which will provide an independent limit on the tensor weak coupling.

Time reversal of Bose-Einstein condensates

Using Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we study the time reversibility of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in kicked optical lattices, showing that inside the regime of quantum chaos the dynamics can be inverted from explosion to collapse. The accuracy of time reversal decreases with the increase of atom interactions inside BEC, until it is completely lost. Surprisingly, quantum chaos helps to restore time reversibility. These predictions can be tested with existing experimental setups.

The role of translational invariance in non linear gauge theories of gravity

The internal structure of the tetrads in a Poincaré non linear gauge theory of gravity is considered. Minkowskian coordinates becomes dynamical degrees of freedom playing the role of Goldstone bosons of the translations. A critical length allowing a covariant expansion similar to the weak field approach is deduced, the zeroth order metric being maximally symmetric (Minkowskian in some cases).

Dynamic nuclear polarization using a single pair of electrons

We observe dynamic nuclear polarization in a GaAs double dot system using two electrons that are never exchanged with the reservoir. By periodically bringing the system to the mixing point where the singlet and the triplet T+ states are degenerate, we observe that an excess polarization is built up. Surprisingly, the pumping procedure is most effective when the total duty cycle equals a multiple of the Larmor precession time of the Ga and As nuclei. The induced polarization corresponds to cooling of the underlying nuclear system. The dependence on the dwell time at the mixing point is found to be non-monotonic.

Loschmidt cooling by time reversal of atomic matter waves

We propose an experimental scheme which allows to realize approximate time reversal of matter waves for ultracold atoms in the regime of quantum chaos. We show that a significant fraction of the atoms return back to their original state, being at the same time cooled down by several orders of magnitude. We give a theoretical description of this effect supported by extensive numerical simulations. The proposed scheme can be implemented with existing experimental setups.

Multifractality and intermediate statistics in quantum maps

We study multifractal properties of wave functions for a one-parameter family of quantum maps displaying the whole range of spectral statistics intermediate between integrable and chaotic statistics. We perform extensive numerical computations and provide analytical arguments showing that the generalized fractal dimensions are directly related to the parameter of the underlying classical map, and thus to other properties such as spectral statistics. Our results could be relevant for Anderson and quantum Hall transitions, where wave functions also show multifractality.

Entanglement of localized states

We derive exact expressions for the mean value of Meyer-Wallach entanglement Q for localized random vectors drawn from various ensembles corresponding to different physical situations. For vectors localized on a randomly chosen subset of the basis, tends for large system sizes to a constant which depends on the participation ratio, whereas for vectors localized on adjacent basis states it goes to zero as a constant over the number of qubits. Applications to many-body systems and Anderson localization are discussed.

Can rigidly rotating polytropes be sources of the Kerr metric?

We use a recent result by Cabezas et al. to build up an approximate solution to the gravitational field created by a rigidly rotating polytrope. We solve the linearized Einstein equations inside and outside the surface of zero pressure including second-order corrections due to rotational motion to get an asymptotically flat metric in a global harmonic coordinate system. We prove that if the metric and their first derivatives are continuous on the matching surface up to this order of approximation, the multipole moments of this metric cannot be fitted to those of the Kerr metric.

Quantum Imaging with Incoherent Photons

We propose a technique to obtain sub-wavelength resolution in quantum imaging with potentially 100% contrast using incoherent light. Our method requires neither path-entangled number states nor multi-photon absorption. The scheme makes use of N photons spontaneously emitted by N atoms and registered by N detectors. It is shown that for coincident detection at particular detector positions a resolution of λ/ N can be achieved.

Observation of Electron-Hole Puddles in Graphene Using a Scanning Single Electron Transistor

The electronic density of states of graphene is equivalent to that of relativistic electrons. In the absence of disorder or external doping the Fermi energy lies at the Dirac point where the density of states vanishes. Although transport measurements at high carrier densities indicate rather high mobilities, many questions pertaining to disorder remain unanswered. In particular, it has been argued theoretically, that when the average carrier density is zero, the inescapable presence of disorder will lead to electron and hole puddles with equal probability. In this work, we use a scanning single electron transistor to image the carrier density landscape of graphene in the vicinity of the neutrality point. Our results clearly show the electron-hole puddles expected theoretically. In addition, our measurement technique enables to determine locally the density of states in graphene. In contrast to previously studied massive two dimensional electron systems, the kinetic contribution to the density of states accounts quantitatively for the measured signal. Our results suggests that exchange and correlation effects are either weak or have canceling contributions.

On Mach's principle: Inertia as gravitation

In order to test the validity of Mach's principle, we calculate the action of the entire universe on a test mass in its rest frame, which is an acceleration ${\bf g}^*$. We show the dependence of the inertia principle on the lapse and the shift. Using the formalism of linearized gravitation, we obtain the non-relativistic limit of ${\bf g}^*$ in terms of two integrals. We follow then two approaches. In the first one, these integrals are calculated in the actual time section $t=t_0$ up to the distance $R_U=ct_0$. In the more exact and satisfactory second approach, they are calculated over the past light cone using the formalism of the retarded potentials. The aim is to find whether the acceleration $\dot{\bf v}$ in the LHS of Newton's second law can be interpreted as a reactive acceleration, in other words, as minus the acceleration of gravity ${\bf g}^*$ in the rest frame of the accelerated particle ({\it i. e.} to know whether or not ${\bf g}^*=-\dot{\bf v}$). The results strongly support Mach's idea since the reactive acceleration for $Ω_Λ=0.7$ turns out to be about ${\bf g}^*=-1.1 \dot{\bf v}$, in the first approach, and about ${\bf g}^*= -0.7 \dot{\bf v}$, in the second. These results depend little on $Ω_Λ$ if $Ω_Λ<0.9$. Even considering the approximations and idealizations made during the calculations, we deem these results as interesting and encouraging.

Singular sources in the Demianski-Newman spacetimes

The analysis of singular regions in the NUT solutions carried out in the recent paper (Manko and Ruiz, 2005 Class. Quantum Grav. 22, p.3555) is now extended to the Demianski-Newman vacuum and electrovacuum spacetimes. We show that the effect which produces the NUT parameter in a more general situation remains essentially the same as in the purely NUT solutions: it introduces the semi-infinite singularities of infinite angular momenta and positive or negative masses depending on the interrelations between the parameters; the presence of the electromagnetic field additionally endows the singularities with electric and magnetic charges. The exact formulae describing the mass, charges and angular momentum distributions in the Demianski-Newman solutions are obtained and concise general expressions P_n=(m+iν)(ia)^n, Q_n=(q+ib)(ia)^n for the entire set of the respective Beig-Simon multipole moments are derived. These moments correspond to a unique choice of the integration constant in the expression of the metric function ωwhich is different from the original choice made by Demianski and Newman.

Autocatalytic reaction front in a pulsative periodic flow

Autocatalytic reaction fronts between reacted and unreacted species may propagate as solitary waves, namely at a constant front velocity and with a stationary concentration profile, resulting from a balance between molecular diffusion and chemical reaction. A velocity field in the supporting medium may affect the propagation of such fronts through different phenomena: convection, diffusion enhancement, front shape changes... We report here on an experimental study and lattice BGK numerical simulations of the effect of an oscillating flow on the autocatalytic reaction between iodate and arsenous acid in a Hele-Shaw cell. In the low frequency range covered by the experiments, the front behavior is controlled by the flow across the gap and can be reproduced with 2D numerical simulations. An analytical solution is also derived under the condition of a weak flow velocity, and is found to be in reasonable agreement with our data.

Anomalous Conductance Quantization in Carbon Nanotubes

Conductance measurements of carbon nanotubes containing gated local depletion regions exhibit plateaus as a function of gate voltage, spaced by approximately e2/h, the quantum of conductance for a single (non-degenerate) mode. Plateau structure is investigated as a function of bias voltage, temperature, and magnetic field. We speculate on the origin of this surprising quantization, which appears to lack band and spin degeneracy.

Spherically symmetric dissipative anisotropic fluids: A general study

The full set of equations governing the evolution of self--gravitating spherically symmetric dissipative fluids with anisotropic stresses is deployed and used to carry out a general study on the behaviour of such systems, in the context of general relativity. Emphasis is given to the link between the Weyl tensor, the shear tensor, the anisotropy of the pressure and the density inhomogeneity. In particular we provide the general, necessary and sufficient, condition for the vanishing of the spatial gradients of energy density, which in turn suggests a possible definition of a gravitational arrow of time. Some solutions are also exhibited to illustrate the discussion.

The microscopic nature of localization in the quantum Hall effect

The quantum Hall effect arises from the interplay between localized and extended states that form when electrons, confined to two dimensions, are subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. The effect involves exact quantization of all the electronic transport properties due to particle localization. In the conventional theory of the quantum Hall effect, strong-field localization is associated with a single-particle drift motion of electrons along contours of constant disorder potential. Transport experiments that probe the extended states in the transition regions between quantum Hall phases have been used to test both the theory and its implications for quantum Hall phase transitions. Although several experiments on highly disordered samples have affirmed the validity of the single-particle picture, other experiments and some recent theories have found deviations from the predicted universal behaviour. Here we use a scanning single-electron transistor to probe the individual localized states, which we find to be strikingly different from the predictions of single-particle theory. The states are mainly determined by Coulomb interactions, and appear only when quantization of kinetic energy limits the screening ability of electrons. We conclude that the quantum Hall effect has a greater diversity of regimes and phase transitions than predicted by the single-particle framework. Our experiments suggest a unified picture of localization in which the single-particle model is valid only in the limit of strong disorder.

Pattern of Reaction Diffusion Front in Laminar Flows

Autocatalytic reaction between reacted and unreacted species may propagate as solitary waves, namely at a constant front velocity and with a stationary concentration profile, resulting from a balance between molecular diffusion and chemical reaction. The effect of advective flow on the autocatalytic reaction between iodate and arsenous acid in cylindrical tubes and Hele-Shaw cells is analyzed experimentally and numerically using lattice BGK simulations. We do observe the existence of solitary waves with concentration profiles exhibiting a cusp and we delineate the eikonal and mixing regimes recently predicted.
