First Observation of an Exotic Reggeon

We present new \compass high-statistics measurements of the peripheral production of $\eta \pi^-$ and $\eta^\prime \pi^-$ pairs in the reactions $\pi^- p \to \eta^{(\prime)}\pi^- p$. For the first time, we perform an unbinned analysis of the high-mass region of the $\eta\pi^-$ and $\eta^\prime\pi^-$ systems, which allows us to disentangle the exchange mechanisms governing their production. We report the first observation in high-energy scattering of an exotic Reggeon with high significance exceeding $5\,\sigma$ for both channels, which is, most likely, related to the exotic $\pi_1(1600)$.8

LHCspin: a Polarized Gas Target for LHC

The goal of the LHCspin project is to develop innovative solutions for measuring the 3D structure of nucleons in high-energy polarized fixed-target collisions at LHC, exploring new processes and exploiting new probes in a unique, previously unexplored, kinematic regime. A precise multi-dimensional description of the hadron structure has, in fact, the potential to deepen our understanding of the strong interactions and to provide a much more precise framework for measuring both Standard Model and Beyond Standard Model observables. This ambitious task poses its basis on the recent experience with the successful installation and operation of the SMOG2 unpolarized gas target in front of the LHCb spectrometer. Besides allowing for interesting physics studies ranging from astrophysics to heavy-ion physics, SMOG2 provides an ideal benchmark for studying beam-target dynamics at the LHC and demonstrates the feasibility of simultaneous operation with beam-beam collisions. With the installation of the proposed polarized target system, LHCb will become the first experiment to simultaneously collect data from unpolarized beam-beam collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=14 TeV and polarized and unpolarized beam-target collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\sim$100 GeV. LHCspin has the potential to open new frontiers in physics by exploiting the capabilities of the world's most powerful collider and one of the most advanced spectrometers. This document also highlights the need to perform an R\&D campaign and the commissioning of the apparatus at the LHC Interaction Region 4 during the Run 4, before its final installation in LHCb. This opportunity could also allow to undertake preliminary physics measurements with unprecedented conditions.

Transversity distributions from difference asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS

In recent years information on the transversity distribution $h_1$ has been obtained combining the Collins asymmetry results from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data on transversely polarized nucleon targets with the information on the fragmentation function of a transversely polarized quark from the asymmetries measured in $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadrons. An alternative method was proposed long time ago, which does not require the $e^+e^-$ data, but allows one to get ratios of the $u$ and $d$ quark transversity distributions from the SIDIS data alone. The method utilizes the ratio of the difference of the Collins asymmetries of positively and negatively charged hadrons produced on transversely polarized proton and deuteron targets. We have applied this method to the COMPASS proton and deuteron data, and extracted the ratio $h_1^d/h_1^u$. The results are compared to those obtained in a previous point--by--point extraction based both on SIDIS and $e^+e^-$ data.

Polarised target for Drell-Yan experiment in COMPASS at CERN, part I

In the polarised Drell-Yan experiment at the COMPASS facility in CERN pion beam with momentum of 190 GeV/c and intensity about $10^8$ pions/s interacted with transversely polarised NH$_3$ target. Muon pairs produced in Drel-Yan process were detected. The measurement was done in 2015 as the 1st ever polarised Drell-Yan fixed target experiment. The hydrogen nuclei in the solid-state NH$_3$ were polarised by dynamic nuclear polarisation in 2.5 T field of large-acceptance superconducting magnet. Large helium dilution cryostat was used to cool the target down below 100 mK. Polarisation of hydrogen nuclei reached during the data taking was about 80 %. Two oppositely polarised target cells, each 55 cm long and 4 cm in diameter were used. Overview of COMPASS facility and the polarised target with emphasis on the dilution cryostat and magnet is given. Results of the polarisation measurement in the Drell-Yan run and overviews of the target material, cell and dynamic nuclear polarisation system are given in the part II.

Graph coloring with no large monochromatic components

For a graph G and an integer t we let mcc_t(G) be the smallest m such that there exists a coloring of the vertices of G by t colors with no monochromatic connected subgraph having more than m vertices. Let F be any nontrivial minor-closed family of graphs. We show that \mcc_2(G) = O(n^{2/3}) for any n-vertex graph G \in F. This bound is asymptotically optimal and it is attained for planar graphs. More generally, for every such F and every fixed t we show that mcc_t(G)=O(n^{2/(t+1)}). On the other hand we have examples of graphs G with no K_{t+3} minor and with mcc_t(G)=Ω(n^{2/(2t-1)}). It is also interesting to consider graphs of bounded degrees. Haxell, Szabo, and Tardos proved \mcc_2(G) \leq 20000 for every graph G of maximum degree 5. We show that there are n-vertex 7-regular graphs G with \mcc_2(G)=Ω(n), and more sharply, for every ε>0 there exists c_ε>0 and n-vertex graphs of maximum degree 7, average degree at most 6+εfor all subgraphs, and with mcc_2(G)\ge c_\eps n. For 6-regular graphs it is known only that the maximum order of magnitude of \mcc_2 is between \sqrt n and n. We also offer a Ramsey-theoretic perspective of the quantity \mcc_t(G).
