Junctions and spiral patterns in Rock-Paper-Scissors type models

We investigate the population dynamics in generalized Rock-Paper-Scissors models with an arbitrary number of species $N$. We show, for the first time, that spiral patterns with $N$-arms may develop both for odd and even $N$, in particular in models where a bidirectional predation interaction of equal strength between all species is modified to include one N-cyclic predator-prey rule. While the former case gives rise to an interface network with Y-type junctions obeying the scaling law $L \propto t^{1/2}$, where $L$ is the characteristic length of the network and $t$ is the time, the later can lead to a population network with $N$-armed spiral patterns, having a roughly constant characteristic length scale. We explicitly demonstrate the connection between interface junctions and spiral patterns in these models and compute the corresponding scaling laws. This work significantly extends the results of previous studies of population dynamics and could have profound implications for the understanding of biological complexity in systems with a large number of species.

The role of domain wall junctions in Carter's pentahedral model

The role of domain wall junctions in Carter's pentahedral model is investigated both analytically and numerically. We perform, for the first time, field theory simulations of such model with various initial conditions. We confirm that there are very specific realizations of Carter's model corresponding to square lattice configurations with X-type junctions which could be stable. However, we show that more realistic realizations, consistent with causality constraints, do lead to a scaling domain wall network with Y-type junctions. We determine the network properties and discuss the corresponding cosmological implications, in particular for dark energy.

Cosmological Consequences of Topological Defects: Dark Energy and Varying Fundamental Constants

We investigated domain wall networks as a possible candidate to explain the present accelerated expansion of the universe. We discuss various requirements that any stable lattice of frustrated walls must obey and propose a class of `ideal' model (in terms of its potential to lead to network frustration). By using the results of the largest and most accurate three-dimensional field theory simulations of domain wall networks with junctions, we find compelling evidence for a gradual approach to scaling. We conjecture that, even though one can build (by hand) lattices that would be stable, no such lattices will ever come out of realistic domain wall forming cosmological phase transitions. We consider cosmic strings and magnetic monopoles in Bekenstein-type models and show that there is a class of models of this type for which the classical Nielsen-Olesen vortex and 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are still valid solutions. We show that Equivalence Principle constraints impose tight limits on the allowed variations of $α$ induced by string networks on cosmological scales. We show that the results obtained using the spherical infall model for an infinite wavelength inhomogeneity are inconsistent with the results of a local linearized gravity study and we argue in favor of the second approach. We also criticize the claim that the value of $α$ inside collapsed regions could be significantly different from the background one on the basis of these findings.

Dynamics of domain wall networks with junctions

We use a combination of analytic tools and an extensive set of the largest and most accurate three-dimensional field theory numerical simulations to study the dynamics of domain wall networks with junctions. We build upon our previous work and consider a class of models which, in the limit of large number $N$ of coupled scalar fields, approaches the so-called `ideal' model (in terms of its potential to lead to network frustration). We consider values of $N$ between N=2 and N=20, and a range of cosmological epochs, and we also compare this class of models with other toy models used in the past. In all cases we find compelling evidence for a gradual approach to scaling, strongly supporting our no-frustration conjecture. We also discuss the various possible types of junctions (including cases where there is a hierarchy of them) and their roles in the dynamics of the network. Finally, we revise the Zel'dovich bound and provide an updated cosmological bound on the energy scale of this type of defect network: it must be lower than $10 {\rm keV}$.

Scaling of cosmological domain wall networks with junctions

We describe the results of the largest and most accurate three-dimensional field theory simulations of domain wall networks with junctions. We consider a previously introduced class of models which, in the limit of large number $N$ of coupled scalar fields, approaches the so-called `ideal' model (in terms of its potential to lead to network frustration). We consider values of $N$ between N=2 and N=20. In all cases we find compelling evidence for a gradual approach to scaling, with the quantitative scaling parameters having only a mild dependence on $N$. These results strongly support our no-frustration conjecture.

Defect Junctions and Domain Wall Dynamics

We study a number of domain wall forming models where various types of defect junctions can exist. These illustrate some of the mechanisms that will determine the evolution of defect networks with junctions. Understanding these mechanisms is vital for a proper assessment of a number of cosmological scenarios: we will focus on the issue of whether or not cosmological frustrated domain wall networks can exist at all, but our results are also relevant for the dynamics of cosmic (super)strings, where junctions are expected to be ubiquitous. We also define and discuss the properties that would make up the ideal model in terms of hypothetical frustrated wall networks, and provide an explicit construction for such a model. We carry out a number of numerical simulations of the evolution of these networks, analyze and contrast their results, and discuss their implications for our no-frustration conjecture.

Frustrated Expectations: Defect Networks and Dark Energy

We discuss necessary conditions for a network of cosmic domain walls to have a chance of providing the dark energy that might explain the recent acceleration of the universe. We derive a strong bound on the curvature of the walls, which shows that viable candidate networks must be fine-tuned and non-standard. We also discuss various requirements that any stable lattice of frustrated walls must obey. We conjecture that, even though one can build (by hand) lattices that would be stable, no such lattices will ever come out of realistic domain wall forming cosmological phase transitions. We provide some simple numerical simulations that illustrate our results and correct some misconceptions in the published literature, but a detailed numerical analysis is left for a companion paper.

Gravitational Effects of Varying Alpha Strings

We study spatial variations of the fine-structure constant in the presence of static straight cosmic strings in the weak-field approximation in Einstein gravity. We work in the context of a generic Bekenstein-type model and consider a gauge kinetic function linear in the scalar field. We determine an analytical form for the scalar field and the string metric at large distances from the core. We show that the gravitational effects of $α$-varying strings can be seen as a combination of the gravitational effects of global and local strings. We also verify that at large distances to the core the space-time metric is similar to that of a global string. We study the motion of test particles approaching from infinity and show that photons are scattered to infinity while massive particles are trapped in bounded trajectories. We also calculate an overall limit on the magnitude of the variation of $α$ for a GUT string, by considering suitable cosmological constraints coming from the Equivalence Principle.

Evolution of the fine-structure constant in the non-linear regime

We study the evolution of the fine-structure constant, $α$, induced by non-linear density perturbations in the context of the simplest class of quintessence models with a non-minimal coupling to the electromagnetic field, in which the two available free functions (potential and gauge kinetic function) are Taylor-expanded up to linear order. We show that the results obtained using the spherical infall model for an infinite wavelength inhomogeneity are inconsistent with the results of a local linearized gravity study and we argue in favour of the second approach. We also discuss recent claims that the value of $α$ inside virialised regions could be significantly different from the background one on the basis of these findings.

Global Defects in Field Theory with Applications to Condensed Matter

We review investigations on defects in systems described by real scalar fields in (D,1) space-time dimensions. We first work in one spatial dimension, with models described by one and two real scalar fields, and in higher dimensions. We show that when the potential assumes specific form, there are models which support stable global defects for D arbitrary. We also show how to find first-order differential equations that solve the equations of motion, and how to solve models in D dimensions via soluble problems in D=1. We illustrate the procedure examining specific models and showing how they may be used in applications in different contexts in condensed matter physics, and in other areas.

Varying Alpha Monopoles

We study static magnetic monopoles in the context of varying alpha theories and show that there is a group of models for which the t'Hooft-Polyakov solution is still valid. Nevertheless, in general static magnetic monopole solutions in varying alpha theories depart from the classical t'Hooft-Polyakov solution with the electromagnetic energy concentrated inside the core seeding spatial variations of the fine structure constant. We show that Equivalence Principle constraints impose tight limits on the allowed variations of alpha induced by magnetic monopoles which confirms the difficulty to generate significant large-scale spatial variation of the fine structure constant found in previous works. This is true even in the most favorable case where magnetic monopoles are the source for these variations.

Cosmic strings in Bekenstein-type models

We study static cosmic string solutions in the context of Bekenstein-type models. We show that there is a class of models of this type for which the classical Nielsen-Olesen vortex is still a valid solution. However, in general static string solutions in Bekenstein-type models strongly depart from the standard Nielsen-Olesen solution with the electromagnetic energy concentrated along the string core seeding spatial variations of the fine structure constant, $α$. We consider models with a generic gauge kinetic function and show that equivalence principle constraints impose tight limits on the allowed variations of $α$ induced by string networks on cosmological scales.

Complete factorization of equations of motion in supersymmetric field theories

We investigate bosonic sectors of supersymmetric field theories. We consider superpotentials described by one and by two real scalar fields, and we show how the equations of motion can be factorized into a family of first order Bogomol'nyi equations, so that all the topological defects are of the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield type. We examine explicit models, that engender the Z_N symmetry, and we identify all the topological sectors, illustrating their integrability.

Complete factorization of equations of motion in Wess-Zumino theory

We prove that the equations of motion describing domain walls in a Wess-Zumino theory involving only one chiral matter multiplet can be factorized into first order Bogomol'nyi equations, so that all the topological defects are of the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield type.
