Reversal of the circular dichroism in the angle-resolved photoemission from Bi2Te3

The helical Dirac fermions at the surface of topological insulators show a strong circular dichroism which has been explained as being due to either the initial-state spin angular momentum, the initial-state orbital angular momentum, or the handedness of the experimental setup. All of these interpretations conflict with our data from Bi2Te3 which depend on the photon energy and show several sign changes. Our one-step photoemission calculations coupled to ab initio theory confirm the sign change and assign the dichroism to a final-state effect. The spin polarization of the photoelectrons, instead, remains a reliable probe for the spin in the initial state.

Trends in the magnetic properties of Fe, Co and Ni clusters and monolayers on Ir(111), Pt(111) and Au(111)

We present a detailed theoretical investigation on the magnetic properties of small single-layered Fe, Co and Ni clusters deposited on Ir(111), Pt(111) and Au(111). For this a fully relativistic {\em ab-initio} scheme based on density functional theory has been used. We analyse the element, size and geometry specific variations of the atomic magnetic moments and their mutual exchange interactions as well as the magnetic anisotropy energy in these systems. Our results show that the atomic spin magnetic moments in the Fe and Co clusters decrease almost linearly with coordination on all three substrates, while the corresponding orbital magnetic moments appear to be much more sensitive to the local atomic environment. The isotropic exchange interaction among the cluster atoms is always very strong for Fe and Co exceeding the values for bulk bcc Fe and hcp Co, whereas the anisotropic Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction is in general one or two orders of magnitude smaller when compared to the isotropic one. For the magnetic properties of Ni clusters the magnetic properties can show quite a different behaviour and we find in this case a strong tendency towards noncollinear magnetism.

Magnetic Compton profiles of Fe and Ni corrected by dynamical electron correlations

Magnetic Compton profiles (MCPs) of Ni and Fe along [111] direction have been calculated using a combined Density Functional and many-body theory approach. At the level of the local spin density approximation the theoretical MCPs does not describe correctly the experimental results around the zero momentum transfer. In this work we demonstrate that inclusion of electronic correlations as captured by Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) improves significantly the agreement between the theoretical and the experimental MCPs. In particular, an energy decomposition of Ni MCPs gives indication of spin polarization and intrinsic nature of Ni 6 eV satellite, a genuine many-body feature.

Spin-orbit coupling effect in (Ga,Mn)As films: anisotropic exchange interactions and magnetocrystalline anisotropy

The magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA) of (Ga,Mn)As films has been studied on the basis of ab-initio electronic structure theory by performing magnetic torque calculations. An appreciable contribution to the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy can be attributed to an extended region adjacent to the surface. Calculations of the exchange tensor allow to ascribe a significant part to the MCA to the exchange anisotropy, caused either by a tetragonal distortion of the lattice or by the presence of the surface or interface.

Calculation of angle-resolved photo emission spectra within the one-step model of photo emission - recent developments

Various technical developments enlarged the potential of angle-resolved photo emission (ARPES) tremendously during the last one or two decades. In particular improved momentum and energy resolution as well as the use of photon energies from few eV up to several keV makes ARPES a rather unique tool to investigate the electronic properties of solids and surfaces. Obviously, this rises the need for a corresponding theoretical formalism that allows to accompany experimental ARPES studies in an adequate way. As will be demonstrated by several examples this goal could be achieved by various recent developments on the basis of the one-step model of photo emission: The spin-orbit induced Rashba-splitting of Shockley-type surface states is discussed using a fully relativistic description. The impact of chemical disorder within surface layers can be handled by means of the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory. Calculating phonon properties together with the corresponding electron-phonon self-energy allows a direct comparison with features in the ARPES spectra caused by electron-phonon interaction. The same holds for the influence of electronic correlation effects. These are accounted for by means of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) that removes the most serious short comings of standard calculations based on the standard LDA. The combination of this approach with the CPA allows the investigation of correlated transition metal alloys. Finally, accounting for the photon momentum and going beyond the single scatter approximation for the final state allows to deal quantitatively with ARPES in the HAXPES regime that reduces the influence of the surface on the spectra and probing primarily the bulk electronic structure this way. Corresponding calculations of ARPES spectra, however, have to deal with thermal vibrations in an adequate way.

Cobalt nano-clusters on metal supported Xe monolayers: influence of the substrate on cluster formation kinetics and magnetism

The growth dynamics of submonolayer coverages of Cobalt during buffer layer assisted growth on Ag(111) and Pt(111) substrates is investigated by variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy in the temperature range between 80 and 150 Kelvin. It is found that attractive cluster-substrate interactions can govern the cluster formation on the Xe buffer layer, if the Xe layer is sufficiently thin. The interpretation of the microscopy results are supported by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism which monitors the effect of cluster-substrate interactions on the formation of magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy of Co nanocluster during the different stages of growth. {\it Ab-initio} calculations show that the cluster magnetism is controlled by the interface anisotropy, leading to perpendicular magnetization for Co on Pt(111). Limits of and new potential for nanocluster fabrication by buffer layer assisted growth are discussed.

gamma-Mn at the border between weak and strong correlations

We investigate the role of magnetic fluctuations in the spectral properties of paramagnetic gamma-Mn. Two methods are employed. The Local Density Approximation plus Dynamical Mean-Field Theory together with the numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo solver is used as a reference for the spectral properties. Then the same scheme is used with the computationally less demanding perturbative spin-polarized fluctuation-exchange solver in combination with the Disordered Local Moment approach, and photoemission spectra are calculated within the one-step model. It is shown that the formation of local magnetic moments in gamma-Mn is very sensitive to the value of Hund's exchange parameter. Comparison with the experimental photoemission spectra demonstrates that gamma-Mn is a strongly correlated system, with the Hubbard band formation, which cannot be described by the perturbative approach. However, minor change of parameters would transform it into a weakly correlated system.

Spin-orbit induced non-collinear spin structure in deposited transition metal clusters

The influence of the spin-orbit coupling on the magnetic structure of deposited transition metal nanostructure systems has been studied by fully relativistic electronic structure calculations. The interplay of exchange coupling and magnetic anisotropy was monitored by studying the corresponding magnetic torque calculated within ab-initio and model approaches. It is found that a spin-orbit induced Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction can stabilise a non-collinear spin structure even if there is a pronounced isotropic ferromagnetic exchange interaction between the magnetic atoms.

Electron correlations in Co$_2$Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si Heusler compounds

This study presents the effect of local electronic correlations on the Heusler compounds Co$_2$Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si as a function of the concentration $x$. The analysis has been performed by means of first-principles band-structure calculations based on the local approximation to spin-density functional theory (LSDA). Correlation effects are treated in terms of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) and the LSDA+U approach. The formalism is implemented within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green's function method. In good agreement with the available experimental data the magnetic and spectroscopic properties of the compound are explained in terms of strong electronic correlations. In addition the correlation effects have been analysed separately with respect to their static or dynamical origin. To achieve a quantitative description of the electronic structure of Co$_2$Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si both static and dynamic correlations must be treated on equal footing.

Correlation effects in total energy of transition metals and related properties

We present an accurate implementation of total energy calculations into the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) method. The electronic structure problem is solved through the full potential linear Muffin-Tin Orbital (FP-LMTO) and Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (FP-KKR) methods with a perturbative solver for the effective impurity suitable for moderately correlated systems. We have tested the method in detail for the case of Ni and investigated the sensitivity of the results to the computational scheme and to the complete self-consistency. It is demonstrated that the LDA+DMFT method can resolve a long-standing controversy between the LDA/GGA density functional approach and experiment for equilibrium lattice constant and bulk modulus of Mn.

Orbital magnetism in transition-metal systems: The role of local correlation effects

The influence of correlation effects on the orbital moments for transition metals and their alloys is studied by first-principle relativistic Density Functional Theory in combination with the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. In contrast to the previous studies based on the orbital polarization corrections we obtain an improved description of the orbital moments for wide range of studied systems as bulk Fe, Co and Ni, Fe-Co disordered alloys and 3$d$ impurities in Au. The proposed scheme can give simultaneously a correct dynamical description of the spectral function as well as static magnetic properties of correlated disordered metals.

Magnetic Anisotropy of Deposited Transition Metal Clusters

We present results of magnetic torque calculations using the fully relativistic spin-polarized Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker approach applied to small Co and Fe clusters deposited on the Pt(111) surface. From the magnetic torque one can derive among others the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). It was found that this approach is numerically much more stable and also computationally less demanding than using the magnetic force theorem that allows to calculate the MAE directly. Although structural relaxation effects were not included our results correspond reasonably well to recent experimental data.
