High temperature crystal structure of UPt$_2$Si$_2$ determined using single-crystal neutron diffraction at 400 K is reported. It is found that the crystal structure remains of the primitive tetragonal CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$ type with the space group P4/$n m m. Anisotropic displacement factors of the Pt atoms at the 2a (3/4 1/4 0) and Si atoms at the 2c (1/4 1/4 z) Wyckoff sites are found to be anomalously large.
In a number of quantum paramagnets, magnetic field can induce a quantum phase transition to an antiferromagnetic state which exists for a range of fields Hc1 < H < Hc2. Generally, these compounds exhibit a significant asymmetry in their properties at low- and high-field transitions. Here we present detailed specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 together with analytical and numerical results. We show that the asymmetry is caused by a strong renormalization of the effective mass of spin excitations due to quantum fluctuations for H<Hc1 that are absent for H<Hc2.
Motivated by experiment, we argue that the enigmatic hidden order in $URu_2Si_2$ demands a dual description that encompasses both its itinerant and its local aspects. A combination of symmetry considerations and observation allow us to rule out a number of possibilities. The two remaining scenarios, the quadrupolar charge density wave and the orbital antiferromagnet, are discussed and experiments are suggested to select between these proposals.
