What is the Wigner function closest to a given square integrable function?

We consider an arbitrary square integrable function $F$ on the phase space and look for the Wigner function closest to it with respect to the $L^2$ norm. It is well known that the minimizing solution is the Wigner function of any eigenvector associated with the largest eigenvalue of the Hilbert-Schmidt operator with Weyl symbol $F$. We solve the particular case of radial functions on the two-dimensional phase space exactly. For more general cases, one has to solve an infinite dimensional eigenvalue problem. To avoid this difficulty, we consider a finite dimensional approximation and estimate the errors for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. As an application, we address the so-called Wigner approximation suggested by some of us for the propagation of a pulse in a general dispersive medium. We prove that this approximation never leads to a {\it bona fide} Wigner function. This is our prime motivation for our optimization problem. As a by-product of our results we are able to estimate the eigenvalues and Schatten norms of certain Schatten-class operators. The techniques presented here may be potentially interesting for estimating eigenvalues of localization operators in time-frequency analysis and quantum mechanics.

Robertson-Schrödinger formulation of Ozawa's Uncertainty Principle

A more general measurement disturbance uncertainty principle is presented in a Robertson-Schrödinger formulation. It is shown that it is stronger and having nicer properties than Ozawa's uncertainty relations. In particular is invariant under symplectic transformations. One shows also that there are states of the probe (measuring device) that saturate the matrix formulation of measurement disturbance uncertainty principle.

Noncommutative Black Holes and the Singularity Problem

A phase-space noncommutativity in the context of a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model is considered to study the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole. Due to the divergence of the probability of finding the black hole at the singularity from a canonical noncommutativity, one considers a non-canonical noncommutativity. It is shown that this more involved type of noncommutativity removes the problem of the singularity in a Schwarzschild black hole.

Noncommutative Black Holes

One considers phase-space noncommutativity in the context of a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model to study the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole. It is shown that the potential function of the corresponding quantum cosmology problem has a local minimum. One deduces the thermodynamics and show that the Hawking temperature and entropy exhibit an explicit dependence on the momentum noncommutativity regime and it is shown that the wave function vanishes in this limit.

Black Holes and Phase Space Noncommutativity

We use the solutions of the noncommutative Wheeler-De Witt equation arising from a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model to compute thermodynamic properties of the Schwarzschild black hole. We show that the noncommutativity in the momentum sector introduces a quadratic term in the potential function of the black hole minisuperspace model. This potential has a local minimum and thus the partition function can be computed by resorting to a saddle point evaluation in the neighbourhood of the minimum. The temperature and the entropy of the black hole are derived, and they have an explicit dependence on the inverse of the momentum noncommutative parameter, $η$. Moreover, we study the $t=r=0$ singularity in the noncommutative regime and show that in this case the wave function of the system vanishes in the neighbourhood of $t=r=0$.

A Deformation Quantization Theory for Non-Commutative Quantum Mechanics

We show that the deformation quantization of non-commutative quantum mechanics previously considered by Dias and Prata can be expressed as a Weyl calculus on a double phase space. We study the properties of the star-product thus defined, and prove a spectral theorem for the star-genvalue equation using an extension of the methods recently initiated by de Gosson and Luef.

Wigner Measures in Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics

We study the properties of quasi-distributions or Wigner measures in the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics. In particular, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a phase-space function to be a noncommutative Wigner measure, for a Gaussian to be a noncommutative Wigner measure, and derive certain properties of the marginal distributions which are not shared by ordinary Wigner measures. Moreover, we derive the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle. Finally, we show explicitly how the set of noncommutative Wigner measures relates to the sets of Liouville and (commutative) Wigner measures.

Deformation quantization of noncommutative quantum mechanics and dissipation

We review the main features of the Weyl-Wigner formulation of noncommutative quantum mechanics. In particular, we present a $\star$-product and a Moyal bracket suitable for this theory as well as the concept of noncommutative Wigner function. The properties of these quasi-distributions are discussed as well as their relation to the sets of ordinary Wigner functions and positive Liouville probability densities. Based on these notions we propose criteria for assessing whether a commutative regime has emerged in the realm of noncommutative quantum mechanics. To induce this noncommutative-commutative transition, we couple a particle to an external bath of oscillators. The master equation for the Brownian particle is deduced.

Coherent States Expectation Values as Semiclassical Trajectories

We study the time evolution of the expectation value of the anharmonic oscillator coordinate in a coherent state as a toy model for understanding the semiclassical solutions in quantum field theory. By using the deformation quantization techniques, we show that the coherent state expectation value can be expanded in powers of $\hbar$ such that the zeroth-order term is a classical solution while the first-order correction is given as a phase-space Laplacian acting on the classical solution. This is then compared to the effective action solution for the one-dimensional $\f^4$ perturbative quantum field theory. We find an agreement up to the order $ł\hbar$, where $ł$ is the coupling constant, while at the order $ł^2 \hbar$ there is a disagreement. Hence the coherent state expectation values define an alternative semiclassical dynamics to that of the effective action. The coherent state semiclassical trajectories are exactly computable and they can coincide with the effective action trajectories in the case of two-dimensional integrable field theories.

Boundary TBA Equations for a Non-diagonal Theory

We compute the boundary entropies for the allowed boundary conditions of the SU(2)-invariant principal chiral model at level k=1. We used the reflection factors determined in a previous work. As a by-product we obtain some miscellaneous results such as the ground-state energy for mixed boundary conditions as well as the degeneracies of the Kondo model in the underscreened and exactly screened cases. All these computations are in perfect agreement with known results.

Reflection Factors for the Principal Chiral Model

We consider the SU(2) Principal Chiral Model (at level $k=1$) on the half-line with scale invariant boundary conditions. By looking at the IR limiting conformal field theory and comparing with the Kondo problem, we propose the set of permissible boundary conditions and the corresponding reflection factors.
