Microscopic study of the He2-SF6 trimers

The He2-SF6 trimers, in their different He isotopic combinations, are studied both in the framework of the correlated Jastrow approach and of the Correlated Hyperspherical Harmonics expansion method. The energetics and structure of the He-SF6 dimers are analyzed, and the existence of a characteristic rotational band in the excitation spectrum is discussed, as well as the isotopic differences. The binding energies and the spatial properties of the trimers, in their ground and lowest lying excited states, obtained by the Jastrow ansatz are in excellent agreement with the results of the converged CHH expansion. The introduction of the He-He correlation makes all trimers bound by largely suppressing the short range He-He repulsion. The structural properties of the trimers are qualitatively explained in terms of the shape of the interactions, Pauli principle and masses of the constituents.

Curie temperature enhancement of electron doped Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ perovskites studied by photoemission spectroscopy

We report here on the electronic structure of electron-doped half-metallic ferromagnetic perovskites such Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$FeMoO$_6$ ($x$=0-0.6) as obtained from high-resolved valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (PES). By comparing the PES spectra with band structure calculations, a distinctive peak at the Fermi level (E$_F$) with predominantly (Fe+Mo) t$_{2g}^\downarrow$ character has been evidenced for all samples, irrespectively of the $x$ values investigated. Moreover, we show that the electron doping due to the La substitution provides selectively delocalized carriers to the t$_{2g}^\downarrow$ metallic spin channel. Consequently, a gradual rising of the density of states at the E$_F$ has been observed as a function of the La doping. By changing the incoming photon energy we have shown that electron doping mainly rises the density of states of Mo parentage. These findings provide fundamental clues for understanding the origin of ferromagnetism in these oxides and shall be of relevance for tailoring oxides having still higher T$_C$.

Neutrino mean free path and in-medium nuclear interaction

Neutrinos produced during the collapse of a massive star are trapped in a nuclear medium (the proto-neutron star). Typically, neutrino energies (10-100 MeV) are of the order of nuclear giant resonances energies. Hence, neutrino propagation is modified by the possibility of coherent scattering on nucleons. We have compared the predictions of different nuclear interaction models. It turns out that their main discrepancies are related to the density dependence of the k-effective mass as well as to the onset of instabilities as density increases. This last point had led us to a systematic study of instabilities of infinite matter with effective Skyrme-type interactions. We have shown that for such interactions there is always a critical density, above which the system becomes unstable.

Evidence of strong antiferromagnetic coupling between localized and itinerant electrons in ferromagnetic Sr2FeMoO6

Magnetic dc susceptibility ($χ$) and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements in the paramagnetic regime, are presented. We found a Curie-Weiss (CW) behavior for $χ$(T) with a ferromagnetic $Θ= 446(5)$ K and $μ_{eff} = 4.72(9) μ_{B}/f.u.$, this being lower than that expected for either $Fe^{3+}(5.9μ_{B})$ or $Fe^{2+}(4.9μ_{B})$ ions. The ESR g-factor $g = 2.01(2)$, is associated with $Fe^{3+}$. We obtained an excellent description of the experiments in terms of two interacting sublattices: the localized $Fe^{3+}$ ($3d^{5}$) cores and the delocalized electrons. The coupled equations were solved in a mean-field approximation, assuming for the itinerant electrons a bare susceptibility independent on $T$. We obtained $χ_{e}^{0} = 3.7$ $10^{-4}$ emu/mol. We show that the reduction of $μ_{eff}$ for $Fe^{3+}$ arises from the strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction between the two sublattices. At variance with classical ferrimagnets, we found that $Θ$ is ferromagnetic. Within the same model, we show that the ESR spectrum can be described by Bloch-Hasegawa type equations. Bottleneck is evidenced by the absence of a $g$-shift. Surprisingly, as observed in CMR manganites, no narrowing effects of the ESR linewidth is detected in spite of the presence of the strong magnetic coupling. These results provide evidence that the magnetic order in $Sr_{2}FeMoO_{6}$ does not originates in superexchange interactions, but from a novel mechanism recently proposed for double perovskites.

Neutrino propagation in Neutron Matter and the Nuclear Equation of State

We study the propagation of neutrinos inside dense matter under the conditions prevailing in a proto-neutron star. Equations of state obtained with different nuclear effective interactions (Skyrme type and Gogny type) are first discussed. It is found that for many interactions, spin and/or isospin instabilities occur at densities larger than the saturation density of nuclear matter. From this study we select two representative interactions, SLy230b and D1P. We calculate the response functions in pure neutron matter where nuclear correlations are described at the Hartree-Fock plus RPA level. These response functions allow us to evaluate neutrino mean free paths corresponding to neutral current processes.

Cationic ordering control of magnetization in Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskite

The role of the synthesis conditions on the cationic Fe/Mo ordering in Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskite is addressed. It is shown that this ordering can be controlled and varied systematically. The Fe/Mo ordering has a profound impact on the saturation magnetization of the material. Using the appropriate synthesis protocol a record value of 3.7muB/f.u. has been obtained. Mossbauer analysis reveals the existence of two distinguishable Fe sites in agreement with the P4/mmm symmetry and a charge density at the Fe(m+) ions significantly larger than (+3) suggesting a Fe contribution to the spin-down conduction band. The implications of these findings for the synthesis of Sr2FeMoO6 having optimal magnetoresistance response are discussed.

Nucleation in dilute 3He-4He liquid mixtures at low temperatures

We present a study of phase separation from supersaturated 3He-4He liquid mixtures at low temperatures addressing both the degree of critical supersaturation Dx and the thermal-to-quantum crossover temperature T* for the nucleation process. Two different nucleation seeds are investigated, namely 3He droplets and 4He vortex lines with cores filled with 3He. We have found that the experimental T* is reproduced when we consider that nucleation proceeds from 3He droplets, whereas Dx is reproduced when we consider 4He vortex lines filled with 3He. However, neither nucleation configuration is able to simultaneously reproduce the current experimental information on Dx and T*.

High-quality variational wave functions for small 4He clusters

We report a variational calculation of ground state energies and radii for 4He_N droplets (3 \leq N \leq 40), using the atom-atom interaction HFD-B(HE). The trial wave function has a simple structure, combining two- and three-body correlation functions coming from a translationally invariant configuration-interaction description, and Jastrow-type short-range correlations. The calculated ground state energies differ by around 2% from the diffusion Monte Carlo results.

Neutrino propagation and spin zero sound in hot neutron matter with Skyrme interactions

We present microscopic calculations of neutrino propagation in hot neutron matter above nuclear density within the framework of the Random Phase Approximation . Calculations are performed for non- degenerate neutrinos using various Skyrme effective interactions. We find that for densities just above nuclear density, spin zero sound is present at zero temperature for all Skyrme forces considered. However it disappears rapidly with increasing temperature due to a strong Landau damping. As a result the mean-free path is given, to a good approximation, by the mean field value. Because of the renormalization of the bare mass in the mean field, the medium is more transparent as compared to the free case. We find, in contrast, that at several times nuclear density, a new type of behavior sets in due to the vicinity of a magnetic instability. It produces a strong reduction of the mean free path. The corresponding transition density however occurs in a region where inputs from more realistic calculations are necessary for the construction of a reliable Skyrme type parametrization.

Translationally invariant treatment of pair correlations in nuclei: II. Tensor correlations

We study the extension of our translationally invariant treatment of few-body nuclear systems to include tensor forces and correlations. It is shown that a direct application of our method is not as successful for realistic V6 interactions as our previous results for V4 potentials suggested. We investigate the cause in detail for the case of $^4$He, and show that a combination of our method with that of Jastrow-correlated wave functions seems to be a lot more powerful, thereby suggesting that for mildly to strongly repulsive forces such a hybrid procedure may be an appropriate description.

Translationally-invariant coupled-cluster method for finite systems

The translational invariant formulation of the coupled-cluster method is presented here at the complete SUB(2) level for a system of nucleons treated as bosons. The correlation amplitudes are solution of a non-linear coupled system of equations. These equations have been solved for light and medium systems, considering the central but still semi-realistic nucleon-nucleon S3 interaction.

Discovery of the Young, Energetic Radio Pulsar PSR J1105-6107

We report the discovery and follow-up timing observations of the 63 ms radio pulsar, PSR J1105-6107. The pulsar is young, having a characteristic age of only 63 kyr and, from its dispersion measure, is estimated to be at a distance of ~7 kpc from the Sun. We consider its possible association with the nearby supernova remnant G290.1-0.8 (MSH 11-61A); an association requires that the pulsar's proper motion be ~22 mas/yr (corresponding to ~650 km/s for a distance of 7 kpc) directed away from the remnant center, assuming that the characteristic age is the true age. The pulsar's spin-down luminosity, 2.5 x 10^{36} erg/s, is in the top 1% of all known pulsar spin-down luminosities. Given its estimated distance, PSR J1105-6107 is therefore likely to be observable at high energies. Indeed, it is coincident with the known CGRO/EGRET source 2EG J1103-6106; we consider the possible association and conclude that it is likely.

Translationally invariant treatment of pair correlations in nuclei: I. Spin and isospin dependent correlations

We study the extension of our translationally invariant treatment of few-body nuclear systems to heavier nuclei. At the same time we also introduce state-dependent correlation operators. Our techniques are tailored to those nuclei that can be dealt with in $LS$ coupling, which includes all nuclei up to the shell closure at $A=40$. We study mainly $p$-shell nuclei in this paper. A detailed comparison with other microscopic many-body approaches is made, using a variety of schematic nuclear interactions. It is shown that our methodology produces very good energies, and presumably also wave functions, for medium mass nuclei.

Monte Carlo Calculations for Liquid $^4$He at Negative Pressure

A Quadratic Diffusion Monte Carlo method has been used to obtain the equation of state of liquid $^4$He including the negative pressure region down to the spinodal point. The atomic interaction used is a renewed version (HFD-B(HE)) of the Aziz potential, which reproduces quite accurately the features of the experimental equation of state. The spinodal pressure has been calculated and the behavior of the sound velociy around the spinodal density has been analyzed.
