Spectrum generating algebra for the continuous spectrum of a free particle in Lobachevski space

In this paper, we construct a Spectrum Generating Algebra (SGA) for a quantum system with purely continuous spectrum: the quantum free particle in a Lobachevski space with constant negative curvature. The SGA contains the geometrical symmetry algebra of the system plus a subalgebra of operators that give the spectrum of the system and connects the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian among themselves. In our case, the geometrical symmetry algebra is $\frak{so}(3,1)$ and the SGA is $\frak{so}(4,2)$. We start with a representation of $\frak{so}(4,2)$ by functions on a realization of the Lobachevski space given by a two sheeted hyperboloid, where the Lie algebra commutators are the usual Poisson-Dirac brackets. Then, introduce a quantized version of the representation in which functions are replaced by operators on a Hilbert space and Poisson-Dirac brackets by commutators. Eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian are given and "naive" ladder operators are identified. The previously defined "naive" ladder operators shift the eigenvalues by a complex number so that an alternative approach is necessary. This is obtained by a non self-adjoint function of a linear combination of the ladder operators which gives the correct relation among the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian. We give an eigenfunction expansion of functions over the upper sheet of two sheeted hyperboloid in terms of the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian.

Spectrum Generating Algebras for the free motion in $S^3$

We construct the spectrum generating algebra (SGA) for a free particle in the three dimensional sphere $S^3$ for both, classical and quantum descriptions. In the classical approach, the SGA supplies time-dependent constants of motion that allow to solve algebraically the motion. In the quantum case, the SGA include the ladder operators that give the eigenstates of the free Hamiltonian. We study this quantum case from two equivalent points of view.

Quantum mechanics and umbral calculus

In this paper we present the first steps for obtaining a discrete Quantum Mechanics making use of the Umbral Calculus. The idea is to discretize the continuous Schroedinger equation substituting the continuous derivatives by discrete ones and the space-time continuous variables by well determined operators that verify some Umbral Calculus conditions. In this way we assure that some properties of integrability and symmetries of the continuous equation are preserved and also the solutions of the continuous case can be recovered discretized in a simple way. The case of the Schroedinger equation with a potential depending only in the space variable is discussed.

Intertwining symmetry algebras of quantum superintegrable systems on the hyperboloid

A class of quantum superintegrable Hamiltonians defined on a two-dimensional hyperboloid is considered together with a set of intertwining operators connecting them. It is shown that such intertwining operators close a su(2,1) Lie algebra and determine the Hamiltonians through the Casimir operators. By means of discrete symmetries a broader set of operators is obtained closing a so(4,2) algebra. The physical states corresponding to the discrete spectrum of bound states as well as the degeneration are characterized in terms of unitary representations of su(2,1) and so(4,2).

Classical and quantum integrability in 3D systems

In this contribution, we discuss three situations in which complete integrability of a three dimensional classical system and its quantum version can be achieved under some conditions. The former is a system with axial symmetry. In the second, we discuss a three dimensional system without spatial symmetry which admits separation of variables if we use ellipsoidal coordinates. In both cases, and as a condition for integrability, certain conditions arise in the integrals of motion. Finally, we study integrability in the three dimensional sphere and a particular case associated with the Kepler problem in $S^3$.

Factorizations of one dimensional classical systems

A class of one dimensional classical systems is characterized from an algebraic point of view. The Hamiltonians of these systems are factorized in terms of two functions that together with the Hamiltonian itself close a Poisson algebra. These two functions lead directly to two time-dependent integrals of motion from which the phase motions are derived algebraically. The systems so obtained constitute the classical analogues of the well known factorizable one dimensional quantum mechanical systems.

Classical and quantum three-dimensional integrable systems with axial symmetry

We study the most general form of a three dimensional classical integrable system with axial symmetry and invariant under the axis reflection. We assume that the three constants of motion are the Hamiltonian, $H$, with the standard form of a kinetic part plus a potential dependent on the position only, the $z$-component of the angular momentum, $L$, and a Hamiltonian-like constant, $\widetilde H$, for which the kinetic part is quadratic in the momenta. We find the explicit form of these potentials compatible with complete integrability. The classical equations of motion, written in terms of two arbitrary potential functions, is separated in oblate spheroidal coordinates. The quantization of such systems leads to a set of two differential equations that can be presented in the form of spheroidal wave equations.

A study of the bound states for square potential wells with position-dependent mass

A square potential well with position-dependent mass is studied for bound states. Applying appropriate matching conditions, a transcendental equation is derived for the energy eigenvalues. Numerical results are presented graphically and the variation of the energy of the bound states are calculated as a function of the well-width and mass.

New Two-Dimensional Integrable Quantum Models from SUSY Intertwining

Supersymmetrical intertwining relations of second order in the derivatives are investigated for the case of supercharges with deformed hyperbolic metric $g_{ik}=diag(1,-a^2)$. Several classes of particular solutions of these relations are found. The corresponding Hamiltonians do not allow the conventional separation of variables, but they commute with symmetry operators of fourth order in momenta. For some of these models the specific SUSY procedure of separation of variables is applied.

Travelling-wave solutions for Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equations through factorizations

Travelling-wave solutions of the standard and compound form of Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equations are found using factorizations of the corresponding reduced ordinary differential equations. The procedure leads to solutions of Bernoulli equations of nonlinearity 3/2 and 2 (Riccati), respectively. Introducing the initial conditions through an imaginary phase in the travelling coordinate, we obtain all the solutions previously reported, some of them being corrected here, and showing, at the same time, the presence of interesting details of these solitary waves that have been overlooked before this investigation

Anyons, group theory and planar physics

Relativistic and nonrelativistic anyons are described in a unified formalism by means of the coadjoint orbits of the symmetry groups in the free case as well as when there is an interaction with a constant electromagnetic field. To deal with interactions we introduce the extended Poincaré and Galilei Maxwell groups.

SUSY approach to Pauli Hamiltonians with an axial symmetry

A two-dimensional Pauli Hamiltonian describing the interaction of a neutral spin-1/2 particle with a magnetic field having axial and second order symmetries, is considered. After separation of variables, the one-dimensional matrix Hamiltonian is analyzed from the point of view of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Attention is paid to the discrete symmetries of the Hamiltonian and also to the Hamiltonian hierarchies generated by intertwining operators. The spectrum is studied by means of the associated matrix shape-invariance. The relation between the intertwining operators and the second order symmetries is established and the full set of ladder operators that complete the dynamical algebra is constructed.

Superintegrable quantum u(3)--systems and higher rank factorizations

A class of two-dimensional superintegrable systems on a constant curvature surface is considered as the natural generalization of some well known one-dimensional factorized systems. By using standard methods to find the shape-invariant intertwining operators we arrive at a $so(6)$ dynamical algebra and its Hamiltonian hierarchies. We pay attention to those associated to certain unitary irreducible representations that can be displayed by means of three-dimensional polyhedral lattices. We also discuss the role of superpotentials in this new context.

Dynamical symmetries for superintegrable quantum systems

We study the dynamical symmetries of a class of two-dimensional superintegrable systems on a 2-sphere, obtained by a procedure based on the Marsden-Weinstein reduction, by considering its shape-invariant intertwining operators. These are obtained by generalizing the techniques of factorization of one-dimensional systems. We firstly obtain a pair of noncommuting Lie algebras $su(2)$ that originate the algebra $so(4)$. By considering three spherical coordinate systems we get the algebra $u(3)$ that can be enlarged by `reflexions' to $so(6)$. The bounded eigenstates of the Hamiltonian hierarchies are associated to the irreducible unitary representations of these dynamical algebras.

Discrete q-derivatives and symmetries of q-difference equations

In this paper we extend the umbral calculus, developed to deal with difference equations on uniform lattices, to q-difference equations. We show that many of the properties considered for shift invariant difference operators satisfying the umbral calculus can be implemented to the case of the q-difference operators. This q-umbral calculus can be used to provide solutions to linear q-difference equations and q-differential delay equations. To illustrate the method, we will apply the obtained results to the construction of symmetry solutions for the q-heat equation and to solve a linear ordinary second order q-difference equation

Twisted Conformal Algebra so(4,2)

A new twisted deformation, U_z(so(4,2)), of the conformal algebra of the (3+1)-dimensional Minkowskian spacetime is presented. This construction is provided by a classical r-matrix spanned by ten Weyl-Poincare generators, which generalizes non-standard quantum deformations previously obtained for so(2,2) and so(3,2). However, by introducing a conformal null-plane basis it is found that the twist can indeed be supported by an eight-dimensional carrier subalgebra. By construction the Weyl-Poincare subalgebra remains as a Hopf subalgebra after deformation. Non-relativistic limits of U_z(so(4,2)) are shown to be well defined and they give rise to new twisted conformal algebras of Galilean and Carroll spacetimes. Furthermore a difference-differential massless Klein-Gordon (or wave) equation with twisted conformal symmetry is constructed through deformed momenta and position operators. The deformation parameter is interpreted as the lattice step on a uniform Minkowskian spacetime lattice discretized along two basic null-plane directions.

Landau quantum systems: an approach based on symmetry

We show that the Landau quantum systems (or integer quantum Hall effect systems) in a plane, sphere or a hyperboloid, can be explained in a complete meaningful way from group-theoretical considerations concerning the symmetry group of the corresponding configuration space. The crucial point in our development is the role played by locality and its appropriate mathematical framework, the fiber bundles. In this way the Landau levels can be understood as the local equivalence classes of the symmetry group. We develop a unified treatment that supplies the correct geometric way to recover the planar case as a limit of the spherical or the hyperbolic quantum systems when the curvature goes to zero. This is an interesting case where a contraction procedure gives rise to nontrivial cohomology starting from a trivial one. We show how to reduce the quantum hyperbolic Landau problem to a Morse system using horocyclic coordinates. An algebraic analysis of the eigenvalue equation allow us to build ladder operators which can help in solving the spectrum under different boundary conditions.
