The New Status Qvo? SN 2021qvo is Another 2003fg-like Type Ia Supernova with a Rising Light-Curve Bump

In recent years, multiple Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have been observed with ''bumps'' in their rising light curves shortly after explosion. Here, we present SN 2021qvo: a SN Ia that exhibits a clear early bump in photometry obtained by the Young Supernova Experiment. Photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2021qvo show that it has a broader light curve, higher peak luminosity, shallower Si II $λ$5972 pseudo-equivalent width, and lower ejecta velocities than normal SNe Ia, which are all consistent with the characteristics of the 2003fg-like (often called ''super-Chandrasekhar") SN subtype. Including SN 2021qvo, just four known 2003fg-like SNe Ia have sufficient pre-peak data to reveal a rising light-curve bump, and all four have bump detections. Host-galaxy analysis reveals that SN 2021qvo exploded in a low-mass galaxy ${\rm log}(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}) = 7.83^{+0.17}_{-0.24}$, also consistent with other members of this class. The current leading early-bump 2003fg-like SN Ia progenitor model involves an interaction between the circumstellar material (CSM) and the SN ejecta. We test the validity of this theory by modeling the early bump and subsequent light-curve evolution of SN 2021qvo with the Modular Open Source Fitter for Transients. We find that the bump can be modeled with a best-fit CSM mass in the range $M_\mathrm{CSM}=3.31-8.51 \times 10^{-3} M_\odot$. SN 2021qvo adds to the small but growing number of 2003fg-like SNe Ia with rising light-curve bumps; as the number of these SNe Ia with CSM estimates continues to grow, population-level inferences about the CSM distribution will be able to constrain the progenitor scenario for these SNe Ia.

Scaling behaviour of the helical and skyrmion phases of Cu2OSeO3 determined by single crystal small angle neutron scattering

Skyrmions are topologically protected quantum objects at the nanometre scale. They form perpendicular to an applied magnetic field at a certain temperature and arrange themselves in a typically hexagonal lattice. Using small angle neutron scattering we have determined the magnetic field versus temperature phase diagrams of the stability range of the different magnetic phases, the helical as well as the skyrmion phases in the multiferroic skyrmion material Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Therefore, a single crystal was mounted in different crystal orientations, i.e. unoriented and with the crystallographic $\langle1 1 0\rangle$ and $\langle1 0 0\rangle$ axis aligned parallel to the magnetic field. Furthermore, different cooling procedures were tested, cooling from the paramagnetic phase at zero magnetic field and field cooling through the skyrmion phase where metastable skyrmions are nucleated. From this, not only were the stability ranges of both the helical and skyrmion phases in this multiferroic skyrmion material determined, but the length of the spin helix and the skyrmion distances at different conditions was also determined through detailed analysis of the positions of the observed Bragg peaks. The obtained data provide valuable information about the scaling of the skyrmion distances and therefore their packing density. The knowledge about this tunability will serve as an important input for the theoretical understanding of the formation of skyrmions. Concerning technological applications, for example as high-density data storage devices in information technology, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the packing density of skyrmions is of critical importance for their design. Therefore, the obtained knowledge is an essential input for future skyrmionics applications in high-density data storage, in low-energy spintronics or in skyrmionics quantum computation.

Decoding the conductance of disordered nanostructures: a quantum inverse problem

Obtaining conductance spectra for a concentration of disordered impurities distributed over a nanoscale device with sensing capabilities is a well-defined problem. However, to do this inversely, i.e., extracting information about the scatters from the conductance spectrum alone, is not an easy task. In the presence of impurities, even advanced techniques of inversion can become particularly challenging. This article extends the applicability of a methodology we proposed capable of extracting composition information about a nanoscale sensing device using the conductance spectrum. The inversion tool decodes the conductance spectrum to yield the concentration and nature of the disorders responsible for conductance fluctuations in the spectra. We present the method for simple one-dimensional systems like an electron gas with randomly distributed delta functions and a linear chain of atoms. We prove the generality and robustness of the method using materials with complex electronic structures like hexagonal boron nitride, graphene nanoribbons, and carbon nanotubes. We also go on to probe the distribution of disorders on the sublattice structure of the materials using the proposed inversion tool.

Reduced crystal symmetry as origin of the ferroelectric polarization within the incommensurate magnetic phase of TbMn2O5

The precise crystal symmetry and hence the emergence of the electric polarization still remains an open question in the multiferroic materials $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ ($R$ = rare-earth, Bi, Y). While previous diffraction studies have indicated that $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ possesses the centro-symmetric space group P$bam$, an atomic displacement allowing for the electric polarization would require a non-centrosymmetric crystal symmetry. Our single crystal neutron diffraction experiments on TbMn$_2$O$_5$ provide direct evidence of a reduced crystallographic symmetry already above the magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions and a change in magnetic order upon entering the ferroelectric phase. This is indicated through the presence of additional nuclear Bragg reflections that are otherwise forbidden for the space group P$bam$ but are in good agreement with the polar space group P$12_11$. It implies that the exchange-striction, which arises from a symmetric $S_i \cdot S_j$ spin coupling, is the dominating mechanism for the generation of the electric polarization in the commensurate magnetic phase of TbMn$_2$O$_5$. Furthermore, the commensurate magnetic reflections are in accordance with a quartile step spin-spiral along the $c$-axis. Therefore, the antisymmetric $S_i \times S_j$ exchange via the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction contributes as well and becomes the leading term in the low temperature incommensurate spin-spiral magnetic phase. These new findings provide important information for the understanding of the complex interplay between the magnetic and the structural order throughout the $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ series of type-II multiferroics.

Magnetic order and magneto-transport in half-metallic ferrimagnetic Mn$_y$Ru$_x$Ga thin films

The ruthenium content of half-metallic Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga thin films, with a biaxially-strained inverse Heusler structure, controls the ferrimagnetism that determines their magnetic and electronic properties. An extensive study of Mn$_y$Ru$_x$Ga films on MgO (100) substrates with $1.8 \leq y \leq 2.6$ and $x = 0.5$, 0.7 or 0.9, including crystallographic, magnetic order, magneto-transport and spin polarisation is undertaken to map specific composition-dependent properties in this versatile ternary system. A comparison of experimental densities obtained from X-ray reflectivity with calculated densities indicates full site occupancy for all compositions, which implies chemical disorder. All moments lie on the Slater-Pauling plot with slope 1 and all except $x = 0.5$, $y = 2.2$ exhibit magnetic compensation at \tcmp~below 500~K. The coercivity near \tcmp~exceeds 10~T. Increasing the Mn or Ru content raises \tcmp, but increasing Ru also decreases the spin polarisation determined by point contact Andreev reflection. Molecular field theory is used to model the temperature dependence of the net ferrimagnetic moment and three principal exchange coefficients are deduced. Marked differences in the shape of anomalous Hall and net magnetisation hysteresis loops are explained by substantial canting of the small net moment by up to \SI{40}{\degree} relative to the $c$-axis in zero field, which is a result of slight non-collinearity of the Mn$^{4c}$ sublattice moments due to competing intra-sublattice exchange interactions arising from antisite disorder and excess Mn in the unit cell. Consequences are reduced spin polarisation and an enhanced intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall effect. The systematic investigation of the physical properties as a function of $x$ and $y$ will guide the selection of compositions to meet the requirements for magnonic and spintronic MRG-based devices.

Exploring the mass surface near the rare-earth abundance peak via precision mass measurements at JYFLTRAP

The JYFLTRAP double Penning trap at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility has been used to measure the atomic masses of 13 neutron-rich rare-earth isotopes. Eight of the nuclides, $^{161}$Pm, $^{163}$Sm, $^{164,165}$Eu, $^{167}$Gd, and $^{165,167,168}$Tb, were measured for the first time. The systematics of the mass surface has been studied via one- and two-neutron separation energies as well as neutron pairing-gap and shell-gap energies. The proton-neutron pairing strength has also been investigated. The impact of the new mass values on the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process has been studied. The calculated abundance distribution results in a better agreement with the solar abundance pattern near the top of the rare-earth abundance peak at around $A\approx165$.

The Northern HIPASS catalogue - Data presentation, completeness and reliability measures

The Northern HIPASS catalogue (NHICAT) is the northern extension of the HIPASS catalogue, HICAT (Meyer et al. 2004). This extension adds the sky area between the declination range of +2 deg < dec. < +25.5 deg to HICAT's declination range of -90 deg < dec. < +2 deg. HIPASS is a blind HI survey using the Parkes Radio Telescope covering 71% of the sky (including this northern extension) and a heliocentric velocity range of -1,280 km/s to 12,700 km/s . The entire Virgo Cluster region has been observed in the Northern HIPASS. The galaxy catalogue, NHICAT, contains 1002 sources with v_hel > 300 km/s . Sources with -300 km/s < v_hel < 300 km/s were excluded to avoid contamination by Galactic emission. In total, the entire HIPASS survey has found 5317 galaxies identified purely by their HI content. The full galaxy catalogue is publicly-available at .

The HIPASS Catalogue: III - Optical Counterparts & Isolated Dark Galaxies

We present the largest catalogue to date of optical counterparts for HI radio-selected galaxies, Hopcat. Of the 4315 HI radio-detected sources from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (Hipass) catalogue, we find optical counterparts for 3618 (84%) galaxies. Of these, 1798 (42%) have confirmed optical velocities and 848 (20%) are single matches without confirmed velocities. Some galaxy matches are members of galaxy groups. From these multiple galaxy matches, 714 (16%) have confirmed optical velocities and a further 258 (6%) galaxies are without confirmed velocities. For 481 (11%), multiple galaxies are present but no single optical counterpart can be chosen and 216 (5%) have no obvious optical galaxy present. Most of these 'blank fields' are in crowded fields along the Galactic plane or have high extinctions. Isolated 'Dark galaxy' candidates are investigated using an extinction cut of ABj < 1 mag and the blank fields category. Of the 3692 galaxies with an ABj extinction < 1 mag, only 13 are also blank fields. Of these, 12 are eliminated either with follow-up Parkes observations or are in crowded fields. The remaining one has a low surface brightness optical counterpart. Hence, no isolated optically dark galaxies have been found within the limits of the Hipass survey.

The 1000 Brightest HIPASS Galaxies: HI Mass Function and Omega_HI

We present a new accurate measurement of the HI mass function of galaxies from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog, a sample of 1000 galaxies with the highest HI peak flux densities in the southern hemisphere (Koribalski et al. 2003). This sample spans nearly four orders of magnitude in HI mass (from log M_HI/M_sun=6.8 to 10.6, H0=75) and is the largest sample of HI selected galaxies to date. We develop a bivariate maximum likelihood technique to measure the space density of galaxies, and show that this is a robust method, insensitive to the effects of large scale structure. The resulting HI mass function can be fitted satisfactorily with a Schechter function with faint-end slope alpha=-1.30. This slope is found to be dependent on morphological type, with later type galaxies giving steeper slopes. We extensively test various effects that potentially bias the determination of the HI mass function, including peculiar motions of galaxies, large scale structure, selection bias, and inclination effects, and quantify these biases. The large sample of galaxies enables an accurate measurement of the cosmological mass density of neutral gas: Omega_HI=(3.8 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-4}. Low surface brightness galaxies contribute only 15% to this value, consistent with previous findings.
