Adaptive sequential Monte Carlo by means of mixture of experts

Appropriately designing the proposal kernel of particle filters is an issue of significant importance, since a bad choice may lead to deterioration of the particle sample and, consequently, waste of computational power. In this paper we introduce a novel algorithm adaptively approximating the so-called optimal proposal kernel by a mixture of integrated curved exponential distributions with logistic weights. This family of distributions, referred to as mixtures of experts, is broad enough to be used in the presence of multi-modality or strongly skewed distributions. The mixtures are fitted, via online-EM methods, to the optimal kernel through minimisation of the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the auxiliary target and instrumental distributions of the particle filter. At each iteration of the particle filter, the algorithm is required to solve only a single optimisation problem for the whole particle sample, yielding an algorithm with only linear complexity. In addition, we illustrate in a simulation study how the method can be successfully applied to optimal filtering in nonlinear state-space models.

A New Measurement of Exclusive \boldmath$ρ^{\circ}$ Photoproduction at HERA

Exclusive $ρ^{\circ}$ photoproduction has been measured with high statistics by the H1 Collaboration. The kinematical range is $20 < W < 90$ GeV, $|t|<3$ GeV$^2$ and $Q^2<4$ GeV$^2$. Cross sections are measured differentially in $W$ and $t$ and allow the extraction of the Pomeron trajectory, for the first time using $ρ^{\circ}$ photoproduction data of one single experiment. The preliminary result, $α_{\mathbb{P}} (t) = 1.093 \pm 0.003 (stat.) ^{+0.008}_{-0.007} (syst.) + (0.116 \pm 0.027 (stat.) ^{+0.036}_{-0.046} (syst.)$ GeV$^{-2} \cdot t$, deviates significantly from the canonical expectation.

Meson Production and Spectroscopy at HERA

Selected recent results from the H1 and ZEUS experiments are reviewed, illustrating some of the many facets of ``meson physics'' at the HERA ep collider. The results cover exclusive elastic and proton-dissociative diffractive vector meson production and comparisons with recent theoretical calculations show that perturbative QCD models are successful in describing these processes when at least one of the involved scales have large values. Furthermore a search for odderon induced exclusive photoproduction of pseudoscalar and tensor mesons is described; upper limits for the cross sections are below recent theoretical predictions. Finally the status of open charm meson spectroscopy in inclusive final states is reported.

QCD Studies at HERA

Several topics from the wide field of QCD studies in Deep-inelastic $ep$ Scattering at HERA are addressed. They include QCD analyses of the inclusive cross section with the determination of $α_s$ and the proton gluon density from the $F_2$ scaling violations, and the determination of the longitudinal structure function $F_L$. QCD analyses of inclusive jet and dijet data are also presented. Finally jet substructure and three-jet production are discussed.

Search for Odderon induced contributions to exclusive Meson Photoproduction at HERA

Odderon induced contributions to exclusive photoproduction of $π^{\circ}$, $f_2(1270)$ and $a_2(1320)$ have been searched for at HERA, using the multiphoton decays of these mesons. No indication for such contributions was found, in a kinematic region defined by the average photon-proton centre-of-mass energy $ = 200 - 215$ GeV, photon virtualities $Q^2 < 0.01 $GeV$^2$ and $0.02 $GeV$^2 < |t| < 0.3 $GeV$^2$, where t is the squared momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The measured upper limits for the cross sections, $σ(γp\to^{\hspace*{-2ex}\mathbb{O}}π^{\circ}N^{\ast}) < 39$ nb, $σ(γp\to^{\hspace*{-2ex}\mathbb{O}} f_2(1270)X) < 16$ nb and $σ(γp\to^{\hspace*{-2ex}\mathbb{O}} a_2(1320)X) < 96$ nb, all at 95% CL, are lower than the predictions by a theoretical model. Exclusive photoproduction of $ω$ and $ωπ^{\circ}$, in the $3γ$ and $5γ$ decay modes, is observed with the expected cross sections.
