A Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE).XII. Ionised gas emission in the inner regions of lenticular galaxies

As part of the VESTIGE survey, a blind narrow-band Ha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the CFHT, we discovered 8 massive lenticular galaxies with prominent ionised gas emission features in their inner (few kpc) regions. These features are either ionised gas filaments similar to those observed in cooling flows (2 gal), or thin discs with sizes 0.7<R(Ha)<2.0 kpc (6 gal), thus significantly smaller than those of the stellar disc. These discs have morphological properties similar to those of the dust seen in absorption in high-resolution HST images. Using a unique set of multifrequency data we show that while the gas located within these inner discs is photoionised by young stars, signaling ongoing star formation, the gas in the filamentary structures is shock-ionised. These discs have a star formation surface brightness similar to those observed in late-type galaxies. Because of their reduced size, however, these lenticular galaxies are located below the main sequence of unperturbed or cluster star-forming systems. By comparing the dust masses measured from absorption maps in optical images, from the Balmer decrement, or estimated by fitting the UV-to-far-IR spectral energy distribution of the target galaxies, we confirm that those derived from optical attenuation maps are heavily underestimated because of geometrical effects due to the relative distribution of the absorbing dust and the emitting stars. We have also shown that these galaxies have gas-to-dust ratios of G/D~80, and that the star formation within these discs follows the Schmidt relation, albeit with an efficiency reduced by a factor of ~ 2.5. Using our unique set of multifrequency data, we discuss the possible origin of the ionised gas in these objects, which suggests multiple and complex formation scenarios for massive lenticular galaxies in clusters.

Carnegie Supernova Project-II: Near-infrared Spectroscopy of Stripped-Envelope Core-Collapse Supernovae

We present 75 near-infrared (NIR; 0.8$-$2.5 $μ$m) spectra of 34 stripped-envelope core-collapse supernovae (SESNe) obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project-II (CSP-II), encompassing optical spectroscopic Types IIb, Ib, Ic, and Ic-BL. The spectra range in phase from pre-maximum to 80 days past maximum. This unique data set constitutes the largest NIR spectroscopic sample of SESNe to date. NIR spectroscopy provides observables with additional information that is not available in the optical. Specifically, the NIR contains the resonance lines of He I and allows a more detailed look at whether Type Ic supernovae are completely stripped of their outer He layer. The NIR spectra of SESNe have broad similarities, but closer examination through statistical means reveals a strong dichotomy between NIR "He-rich" and "He-poor" SNe. These NIR subgroups correspond almost perfectly to the optical IIb/Ib and Ic/Ic-BL types, respectively. The largest difference between the two groups is observed in the 2 $μ$m region, near the He I $λ$2.0581 $μ$m line. The division between the two groups is not an arbitrary one along a continuous sequence. Early spectra of He-rich SESNe show much stronger He I $λ$2.0581 $μ$m absorption compared to the He-poor group, but with a wide range of profile shapes. The same line also provides evidence for trace amounts of He in half of our SNe in the He-poor group.

Less than 1% of Core-Collapse Supernovae in the local universe occur in elliptical galaxies

We present observations of three Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) in elliptical hosts, detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility Bright Transient Survey (BTS). SN 2019ape is a SN Ic that exploded in the main body of a typical elliptical galaxy. Its properties are consistent with an explosion of a regular SN Ic progenitor. A secondary g-band light curve peak could indicate interaction of the ejecta with circumstellar material (CSM). An H$α$-emitting source at the explosion site suggests a residual local star formation origin. SN 2018fsh and SN 2020uik are SNe II which exploded in the outskirts of elliptical galaxies. SN 2020uik shows typical spectra for SNe II, while SN 2018fsh shows a boxy nebular H$α$ profile, a signature of CSM interaction. We combine these 3 SNe with 7 events from the literature and analyze their hosts as a sample. We present multi-wavelength photometry of the hosts, and compare this to archival photometry of all BTS hosts. Using the spectroscopically complete BTS we conclude that $0.3\%^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ of all CCSNe occur in elliptical galaxies. We derive star-formation rates and stellar masses for the host-galaxies and compare them to the properties of other SN hosts. We show that CCSNe in ellipticals have larger physical separations from their hosts compared to SNe Ia in elliptical galaxies, and discuss implications for star-forming activity in elliptical galaxies.

Transitional events in the spectrophotometric regime between stripped envelope and superluminous supernovae

The division between stripped-envelope supernovae (SE-SNe) and superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) is not well defined in either photometric or spectroscopic space. While a sharp luminosity threshold has been suggested, there remains an increasing number of transitional objects that reach this threshold without the spectroscopic signatures common to SLSNe. In this work we present data and analysis on four SNe transitional between SE-SNe and SLSNe; the He-poor SNe 2019dwa and 2019cri, and the He-rich SNe 2019hge and 2019unb. Each object displays long-lived and variable photometric evolution with luminosities around the SLSN threshold of $M_r < -19.8$ mag. Spectroscopically however, these objects are similar to SE-SNe, with line velocities lower than either SE-SNe and SLSNe, and thus represent an interesting case of rare transitional events.

ASASSN-15hy: an under-luminous, red 03fg-like type Ia supernova

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the 03fg-like type Ia supernova (SN Ia) ASASSN-15hy from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR). ASASSN-15hy shares many of the hallmark characteristics of 03fg-like SNe Ia, previously referred to as "super-Chandrasekhar" SNe Ia. It is bright in the UV and NIR, lacks a clear i-band secondary maximum, shows a strong and persistent C II feature, and has a low Si II $λ$6355 velocity. However, some of its properties are also extreme among the subgroup. ASASSN-15hy is under-luminous (M$_{B,peak}=-19.14^{+0.11}_{-0.16}$ mag), red ($(B-V)_{Bmax}=0.18^{+0.01}_{-0.03}$ mag), yet slowly declining ($Δ{m_{15}}(B)=0.72 \pm 0.04$ mag). It has the most delayed onset of the i-band maximum of any 03fg-like SN. ASASSN-15hy lacks the prominent H-band break emission feature that is typically present during the first month past maximum in normal SNe Ia. Such events may be a potential problem for high-redshift SN Ia cosmology. ASASSN-15hy may be explained in the context of an explosion of a degenerate core inside a non-degenerate envelope. The explosion impacting the non-degenerate envelope with a large mass provides additional luminosity and low ejecta velocities. An initial deflagration burning phase is critical in reproducing the low $^{56}$Ni mass and luminosity, while the large core mass is essential in providing the large diffusion time scales required to produce the broad light curves. The model consists of a rapidly rotating 1.47 $M_{\odot}$ degenerate core and a 0.8 $M_{\odot}$ non-degenerate envelope. This "deflagration core-degenerate" scenario may result from the merger between a white dwarf and the degenerate core of an asymptotic giant branch star.

SN 2021csp -- the explosion of a stripped envelope star within a H and He-poor circumstellar medium

We present observations of SN 2021csp, a unique supernova (SN) which displays evidence for interaction with H- and He- poor circumstellar material (CSM) at early times. Using high-cadence spectroscopy taken over the first week after explosion, we show that the spectra of SN 2021csp are dominated by C III lines with a velocity of 1800 km s$^{-1}$. We associate this emission with CSM lost by the progenitor prior to explosion. Subsequently, the SN displays narrow He lines before metamorphosing into a broad-lined Type Ic SN. We model the bolometric light curve of SN 2021csp, and show that it is consistent with the energetic ($4\times10^{51}$ erg) explosion of a stripped star, producing 0.4 M$_\odot$ of 56Ni within a $\sim$1 M$_\odot$ shell of CSM extending out to 400 R$_\odot$.

An Amusing Look at the Host of the Periodic Nuclear Transient ASASSN-14ko Reveals a Second AGN

We present Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral-field spectroscopy of ESO 253$-$G003, which hosts a known Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) and the periodic nuclear transient ASASSN-14ko, observed as part of the All-weather MUse Supernova Integral-field of Nearby Galaxies (AMUSING) survey. The MUSE observations reveal that the inner region hosts two AGN separated by $1.4\pm0.1~\rm{kpc}$ ($\approx 1.\!\!^{\prime\prime}7$). The brighter nucleus has asymmetric broad, permitted emission-line profiles and is associated with the archival AGN designation. The fainter nucleus does not have a broad emission-line component but exhibits other AGN characteristics, including $v_{\rm{FWHM}}\approx 700~\rm{km}~\rm{s}^{-1}$ forbidden line emission, $\log_{10}(\rm{[OIII]}/\rm{H}β) \approx 1.1$, and high excitation potential emission lines such as [Fe$~$VII]$~\lambda6086$ and He$~$II$~\lambda4686$. The host galaxy exhibits a disturbed morphology with large kpc-scale tidal features, potential outflows from both nuclei, and a likely superbubble. A circular relativistic disk model cannot reproduce the asymmetric broad emission-line profiles in the brighter nucleus, but two non-axisymmetric disk models provide good fits to the broad emission-line profiles: an elliptical disk model and a circular disk + spiral arm model. Implications for the periodic nuclear transient ASASSN-14ko are discussed.

SN 2020cpg: an energetic link between type IIb and Ib supernovae

Stripped-envelope supernovae (SE-SNe) show a wide variety of photometric and spectroscopic properties. This is due to the different potential formation channels and the stripping mechanism that allows for a large diversity within the progenitors outer envelop compositions. Here, the photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2020cpg covering $\sim 130$ days from the explosion date are presented. SN 2020cpg ($z = 0.037$) is a bright SE-SNe with the $B$-band peaking at $M_{B} = -17.75 \pm 0.39$ mag and a maximum pseudo-bolometric luminosity of $L_\mathrm{max} = 6.03 \pm 0.01 \times 10^{42} \mathrm{ergs^{-1}}$. Spectroscopically, SN 2020cpg displays a weak high and low velocity H$α$ feature during the photospheric phase of its evolution, suggesting that it contained a detached hydrogen envelope prior to explosion. From comparisons with spectral models, the mass of hydrogen within the outer envelope was constrained to be $\sim 0.1 \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. From the pseudo-bolometric light curve of SN 2020cpg a $^{56}$Ni mass of $M_\mathrm{Ni} \sim 0.27 \pm 0.08$ $\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ was determined using an Arnett-like model. The ejecta mass and kinetic energy of SN 2020cpg were determined using an alternative method that compares the light curve of SN 2020cpg and several modelled SE-SNe, resulting in an ejecta mass of $M_\mathrm{ejc} \sim 5.5 \pm 2.0$ $\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and a kinetic energy of $E_\mathrm{K} \sim 9.0 \pm 3.0 \times 10^{51} \mathrm{erg}$. The ejected mass indicates a progenitor mass of $18 - 25 \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. The use of the comparative light curve method provides an alternative process to the commonly used Arnett-like model to determine the physical properties of SE-SNe.

The double-peaked type Ic Supernova 2019cad: another SN 2005bf-like object

We present the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of supernova (SN) 2019cad during the first $\sim100$ days from explosion. Based on the light curve morphology, we find that SN 2019cad resembles the double-peaked type Ib/c SN 2005bf and the type Ic PTF11mnb. Unlike those two objects, SN 2019cad also shows the initial peak in the redder bands. Inspection of the g-band light curve indicates the initial peak is reached in $\sim8$ days, while the r band peak occurred $\sim15$ days post-explosion. A second and more prominent peak is reached in all bands at $\sim45$ days past explosion, followed by and fast decline from $\sim60$ days. During the first 30 days, the spectra of SN 2019cad show the typical features of a type Ic SN, however, after 40 days, a blue continuum with prominent lines of Si II $λ6355$ and C II $λ6580$ is observed again. Comparing the bolometric light curve to hydrodynamical models, we find that SN 2019cad is consistent with a pre-SN mass of 11 M$_{\odot}$, and an explosion energy of $3.5\times 10^{51}$ erg. The light curve morphology can be reproduced either by a double-peaked $^{56}$Ni distribution with an external component of 0.041 M$_{\odot}$ and an internal component of 0.3 M$_{\odot}$ or a double-peaked $^{56}$Ni distribution plus magnetar model (P $\sim11$ ms and B $\sim26\times 10^{14}$ G). If SN 2019cad were to suffer from significant host reddening (which cannot be ruled out), the $^{56}$Ni model would require extreme values, while the magnetar model would still be feasible.

Optical-to-NIR magnitude measurements of the Starlink LEO Darksat satellite and effectiveness of the darkening treatment

Four observations of Starlink's LEO communication satellites, Darksat and STARLINK-1113, were conducted on two nights with two telescopes. The Chakana 0.6\,m telescope at the Ckoirama observatory (Chile) observed both satellites on 5\,Mar\,2020 (UTC) and 7\,Mar\,2020 (UTC) using a Sloan r' and Sloan i' filter, respectively. The ESO VISTA 4.1\,m telescope with the VIRCAM instrument observed both satellites on 5\,Mar\,2020 (UTC) and 7\,Mar\,2020 (UTC) in the NIR J-band and Ks-band, respectively. The calibration, image processing, and analysis of the Darksat images give r\,$\approx$\,5.6\,mag, i\,$\approx$\,5.0\,mag, J\,$\approx$\,4.2\,mag, and Ks\,$\approx$\,4.0\,mag when scaled to a range of 550\,km (airmass $=1$) and corrected for the solar incidence and observer phase angles. In comparison, the STARLINK-1113 images give r\,$\approx$\,4.9\,mag, i\,$\approx$\,4.4\,mag, J\,$\approx$\,3.8\,mag, and Ks\,$\approx$\,3.6\,mag when corrected for range, solar incidence, and observer phase angles. The data and results presented in this work show that the special darkening coating used by Starlink for Darksat has darkened the Sloan r' magnitude by 50\,\%, Sloan i' magnitude by 42\,\%, NIR J magnitude by 32\,\%, and NIR Ks magnitude by 28\,\%. The results show that both satellites increase in reflective brightness with increasing wavelength and that the effectiveness of the darkening treatment is reduced at longer wavelengths. This shows that the mitigation strategies being developed by Starlink and other LEO satellite operators need to take into account other wavelengths, not just the optical. This work highlights the continued importance of obtaining multi-wavelength observations of many different LEO satellites in order to characterise their reflective properties and to aid the community in developing impact simulations and developing mitigation tools.

SN 2013ai: a link between hydrogen-rich and hydrogen-poor core-collapse supernovae

We present a study of optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra along with the light curves of SN 2013ai. These data range from discovery until 380 days after explosion. SN 2013ai is a fast declining type II supernova (SN II) with an unusually long rise time; $18.9\pm2.7$d in $V$ band and a bright $V$ band peak absolute magnitude of $-18.7\pm0.06$ mag. The spectra are dominated by hydrogen features in the optical and NIR. The spectral features of SN 2013ai are unique in their expansion velocities, which when compared to large samples of SNe II are more than 1,000 kms faster at 50 days past explosion. In addition, the long rise time of the light curve more closely resembles SNe IIb rather than SNe II. If SN 2013ai is coeval with a nearby compact cluster we infer a progenitor ZAMS mass of $\sim$17 M$_\odot$. After performing light curve modeling we find that SN 2013ai could be the result of the explosion of a star with little hydrogen mass, a large amount of synthesized $^{56}$Ni, 0.3-0.4 M$_\odot$, and an explosion energy of $2.5-3.0\times10^{51}$ ergs. The density structure and expansion velocities of SN 2013ai are similar to that of the prototypical SN IIb, SN 1993J. However, SN 2013ai shows no strong helium features in the optical, likely due to the presence of a dense core that prevents the majority of $γ$-rays from escaping to excite helium. Our analysis suggests that SN 2013ai could be a link between SNe II and stripped envelope SNe.

Luminous Red Nova AT 2019zhd, a new merger in M 31

We present the follow-up campaign of the luminous red nova (LRN) AT~2019zhd, the third event of this class observed in M 31. The object was followed by several sky surveys for about five months before the outburst, during which it showed a slow luminosity rise. In this phase, the absolute magnitude ranged from M_r=-2.8+-0.2 mag to M_r=-5.6+-0.1 mag. Then, over a four-five day period, AT 2019zhd experienced a major brightening, reaching at peak M_r=-9.61+-0.08 mag, and an optical luminosity of 1.4x10^39 erg/s. After a fast decline, the light curve settled onto a short-duration plateau in the red bands. Although less pronounced, this feature is reminiscent of the second red maximum observed in other LRNe. This phase was followed by a rapid linear decline in all bands. At maximum, the spectra show a blue continuum with prominent Balmer emission lines. The post-maximum spectra show a much redder continuum, resembling that of an intermediate-type star. In this phase, Halpha becomes very weak, Hbeta is no longer detectable and a forest of narrow absorption metal lines now dominate the spectrum. The latest spectra, obtained during the post-plateau decline, show a very red continuum (T_eff ~ 3000 K) with broad molecular bands of TiO, similar to those of M-type stars. The long-lasting, slow photometric rise observed before the peak resembles that of LRN V1309 Sco, which was interpreted as the signature of the common-envelope ejection. The subsequent outburst is likely due to the gas outflow following a stellar merging event. The inspection of archival HST images taken 22 years before the LRN discovery reveals a faint red source (M_F555W=0.21+-0.14 mag, with F555W-F814W = 2.96+-0.12 mag) at the position of AT 2019zhd, which is the most likely quiescent precursor. The source is consistent with expectations for a binary system including a predominant M5-type star.

Accretion disc cooling and narrow absorption lines in the tidal disruption event AT 2019dsg

We present the results of a large multi-wavelength follow-up campaign of the Tidal Disruption Event (TDE) \dsg, focusing on low to high resolution optical spectroscopy, X-ray, and radio observations. The galaxy hosts a super massive black hole of mass $\rm (5.4\pm3.2)\times10^6\,M_\odot$ and careful analysis finds no evidence for the presence of an Active Galactic Nucleus, instead the TDE host galaxy shows narrow optical emission lines that likely arise from star formation activity. The transient is luminous in the X-rays, radio, UV and optical. The X-ray emission becomes undetected after $\sim$125 days, and the radio luminosity density starts to decay at frequencies above 5.4 GHz by $\sim$180 days. Optical emission line signatures of the TDE are present up to $\sim$250 days after the discovery of the transient. The medium to high resolution spectra show traces of absorption lines that we propose originate in the self-gravitating debris streams. At late times, after $\sim$200 days, narrow Fe lines appear in the spectra. The TDE was previously classified as N-strong, but after careful subtraction of the host galaxy's stellar contribution, we find no evidence for these N lines in the TDE spectrum, even though O Bowen lines are detected. The observed properties of the X-ray emission are fully consistent with the detection of the inner regions of a cooling accretion disc. The optical and radio properties are consistent with this central engine seen at a low inclination (i.e., seen from the poles).

A Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE).IX. The effects of ram pressure stripping down to the scale of individual HII regions in the dwarf galaxy IC 3476

We study the IB(s)m galaxy IC 3476 observed in the context of VESTIGE, a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster. The deep narrow-band (NB) image reveals a very pertubed ionised gas distribution, characterised by a prominent banana-shaped structure in the front of the galaxy formed of giant HII regions crossing the stellar disc, with star forming structures at ~8 kpc from the edges of the stellar disc, detected also in a deep FUV ASTROSAT/UVIT image. This particular morphology indicates that the galaxy is undergoing an almost edge-on ram pressure stripping event. The NB image also shows that the star formation activity is totally quenched in the leading edge of the disc, where the gas has been removed during the interaction. The SED fitting analysis indicates that this quenching episode is very recent (~50 Myr), and roughly corresponds to an increase of the star formation activity in the inner regions with respect to what expected for secular evolution. The analysis of these data, whose angular resolution allows the study of the induced effects of the perturbation down to the scale of individual HII regions, also suggests that the increase of the star formation activity is due to the compression of the gas along the stellar disc of the galaxy, which is able to increase its mean electron density and boost the star formation process producing bright HII regions. The hydrodynamic interaction has deeply perturbed the velocity field of the ionised gas component while leaving unaffected that of the stellar disc. The comparison of the data with hydrodynamic simulations accounting for the different gas phases (atomic, molecular, ionised) consistently indicates that the perturbing event is very recent, once again confirming that ram pressure stripping is a violent phenomenon able to perturb on short timescales the evolution of galaxies in rich environments.

Supernova 2018cuf: A Type IIP supernova with a slow fall from plateau

We present multi-band photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2018cuf, a Type IIP ("P" for plateau) supernova (SN) discovered by the Distance Less Than 40 Mpc survey (DLT40) within 24 hours of explosion. SN 2018cuf appears to be a typical Type IIP SN, with an absolute $V$-band magnitude of $-$16.73 $\pm$ 0.32 at maximum and a decline rate of 0.21 $\pm$ 0.05 mag/50d during the plateau phase. The distance of the object is constrained to be 41.8 $\pm$ 5.7 Mpc by using the expanding photosphere method. We use spectroscopic and photometric observations from the first year after the explosion to constrain the progenitor of SN 2018cuf using both hydrodynamic light curve modelling and late-time spectroscopic modelling. The progenitor of SN 2018cuf was most likely a red supergiant of about 14.5 $\rm M_{\odot}$ that produced 0.04 $\pm$ 0.01 $\rm M_{\odot}$ $\rm ^{56}Ni$ during the explosion. We also found $\sim$ 0.07 $\rm M_{\odot}$ of circumstellar material (CSM) around the progenitor is needed to fit the early light curves, where the CSM may originate from pre-supernova outbursts. During the plateau phase, high velocity features at $\rm \sim 11000\ km~s^{-1}$ are detected both in the optical and near-infrared spectra, supporting the possibility that the ejecta were interacting with some CSM. A very shallow slope during the post-plateau phase is also observed and it is likely due to a low degree of nickel mixing or the relatively high nickel mass in the SN.

The Tidal Disruption Event AT 2018hyz I: Double-peaked emission lines and a flat Balmer decrement

We present results from spectroscopic observations of AT 2018hyz, a transient discovered by the ASAS-SN survey at an absolute magnitude of $M_V\sim -20.2$ mag, in the nucleus of a quiescent galaxy with strong Balmer absorption lines. AT 2018hyz shows a blue spectral continuum and broad emission lines, consistent with previous TDE candidates. High cadence follow-up spectra show broad Balmer lines and He I in early spectra, with He II making an appearance after $\sim70-100$ days. The Balmer lines evolve from a smooth broad profile, through a boxy, asymmetric double-peaked phase consistent with accretion disc emission, and back to smooth at late times. The Balmer lines are unlike typical AGN in that they show a flat Balmer decrement (H$α$/H$β\sim1.5$), suggesting the lines are collisionally excited rather than being produced via photo-ionisation. The flat Balmer decrement together with the complex profiles suggest that the emission lines originate in a disc chromosphere, analogous to those seen in cataclysmic variables. The low optical depth of material due to a possible partial disruption may be what allows us to observe these double-peaked, collisionally excited lines. The late appearance of He II may be due to an expanding photosphere or outflow, or late-time shocks in debris collisions.

An outflow powers the optical rise of the nearby, fast-evolving tidal disruption event AT2019qiz

At 66 Mpc, AT2019qiz is the closest optical tidal disruption event (TDE) to date, with a luminosity intermediate between the bulk of the population and iPTF16fnl. Its proximity allowed a very early detection and triggering of multiwavelength and spectroscopic follow-up well before maximum light. The velocity dispersion of the host galaxy and fits to the TDE light curve indicate a black hole mass $\approx 10^6$ M$_\odot$, disrupting a star of $\approx 1$ M$_\odot$. Comprehensive UV, optical and X-ray data shows that the early optical emission is dominated by an outflow, with a luminosity evolution $L \propto t^2$, consistent with a photosphere expanding at constant velocity ($\gtrsim 2000$ km s$^{-1}$), and a line-forming region producing initially blueshifted H and He II profiles with $v=3000-10000$ km s$^{-1}$. The fastest optical ejecta approach the velocity inferred from radio detections (modelled in a forthcoming companion paper from K.~D.~Alexander et al.), thus the same outflow may be responsible for both the fast optical rise and the radio emission -- the first time this connection has been observed in a TDE. The light curve rise begins $29 \pm 2$ days before maximum light, peaking when the photosphere reaches the radius where optical photons can escape. The photosphere then undergoes a sudden transition, first cooling at constant radius then contracting at constant temperature. At the same time, the blueshifts disappear from the spectrum and Bowen fluorescence lines (N III) become prominent, implying a source of far-UV photons, while the X-ray light curve peaks at $\approx 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Assuming that these X-rays are from prompt accretion, the size and mass of the outflow are consistent with the reprocessing layer needed to explain the large optical to X-ray ratio in this and other optical TDEs, possibly favouring accretion-powered over collision-powered outflow models.

SN 2017ivv: two years of evolution of a transitional Type II supernova

We present the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the Type II supernova (SN II) SN 2017ivv (also known as ASASSN-17qp). Located in an extremely faint galaxy (M$_r=-10.3$ mag), SN 2017ivv shows an unprecedented evolution during the two years of observations. At early times, the light curve shows a fast rise ($\sim6-8$ days) to a peak of ${\rm M}^{\rm max}_{g}= -17.84$ mag, followed by a very rapid decline of $7.94\pm0.48$ mag per 100 days in the $V-$band. The extensive photometric coverage at late phases shows that the radioactive tail has two slopes, one steeper than that expected from the decay of $^{56}$Co (between 100 and 350 days), and another slower (after 450 days), probably produced by an additional energy source. From the bolometric light curve, we estimated that the amount of ejected $^{56}$Ni is $\sim0.059\pm0.003$ M$\odot$. The nebular spectra of SN 2017ivv show a remarkable transformation that allows the evolution to be split into three phases: (1) H$α$ strong phase ($<200$ days); (2) H$α$ weak phase (between 200 and 350 days); and (3) H$α$ broad phase ($>500$ days). We find that the nebular analysis favours a binary progenitor and an asymmetric explosion. Finally, comparing the nebular spectra of SN 2017ivv to models suggests a progenitor with a zero-age main-sequence mass of 15 -- 17 \Msun.
