E2 and M1 strengths in heavy deformed nuclei

Energy levels of the four lowest bands in 160,162,164Dy and 168Er, B(E2) transition strengths between the levels, and the B(M1) strength distribution of the ground state, all calculated within the framework of pseudo-SU(3) model, are presented. Realistic single-particle energies and quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interaction strengths fixed from systematics were used in the calculations. The strengths of four rotor-like terms, all small relative to the other terms in the interaction, were adjusted to give an overall best fit to the energy spectra. The procedure yielded consistent parameter sets for the four nuclei.

SU(3) symmetry breaking in lower fp-shell nuclei

Results of shell-model calculations for lower fp-shell nuclei show that SU(3) symmetry breaking in this region is driven by the single-particle spin-orbit splitting. However, even though states of the yrast band exhibit SU(3) symmetry breaking, the results also show that the yrast band B(E2) values are insensitive to this fragmentation of the SU(3) symmetry; specifically, the quadrupole collectivity as measured by B(E2) transition strengths between low lying members of the yrast band remain high even though SU(3) appears to be broken. Results for $^{44,46,48}Ti$ and $^{48}Cr$ using the Kuo-Brown-3 two-body interaction are given to illustrate these observations.

Quasi-SU(3) truncation scheme for odd-even sd-shell nuclei

The quasi-SU(3) symmetry, as found in shell model calculations, refers to the dominance of the single particle plus quadrupole-quadrupole terms in the Hamiltonian used to describe well deformed nuclei, and to the subspace relevant in its diagonalization. It provides a very efficient basis truncation scheme. It is shown that a small number of SU(3) coupled irreps, those with the largest C_2 values within the direct product of the proton and neutron SU(3) irreps with spin 0 and 1 (for even number of particles), and spin 1/2 and 3/2 for (for odd number of nucleons), are enough to describe the low energy spectra and B(E2) transition strengths of 21Ne, 23Na and 25Mg. A simple but realistic Hamiltonian is employed. Results compare favorably both with experimental data and with full shell model calculations. Limitations and possible improvements of the schematic Hamiltonian are discussed.

Deformations of the Boson $sp(4,R)$ Representation and its Subalgebras

The boson representation of the sp(4,R) algebra and two distinct deformations of it, are considered, as well as the compact and noncompact subalgebras of each. The initial as well as the deformed representations act in the same Fock space. One of the deformed representation is based on the standard q-deformation of the boson creation and annihilation operators. The subalgebras of sp(4,R) (compact u(2) and three representations of the noncompact u(1,1) are also deformed and are contained in this deformed algebra. They are reducible in the action spaces of sp(4,R) and decompose into irreducible representations. The other deformed representation, is realized by means of a transformation of the q-deformed bosons into q-tensors (spinor-like) with respect to the standard deformed su(2). All of its generators are deformed and have expressions in terms of tensor products of spinor-like operators. In this case, an other deformation of su(2) appears in a natural way as a subalgebra and can be interpreted as a deformation of the angular momentum algebra so(3). Its representation is reducible and decomposes into irreducible ones that yields a complete description of the same.

Shell Model Description of $^{158}$Gd

The pseudo-SU(3) model is used to describe the low-energy spectra as well as $E2$ and $M1$ transition strengths in $^{158}$Gd. The Hamiltonian includes spherical single-particle energies, the quadrupole-quadrupole and proton and neutron pairing interactions, plus four rotor-like terms. The parameters of the Hamiltonian were fixed by systematics with the rotor-like terms determined through a least-squares analysis. The basis states are built as linear combinations of SU(3) states which are the direct product of SU(3) proton and neutron states with pseudo-spin zero. The calculated results compare favorably with the available experimental data, which demonstrates the ability of the model to describe such nuclei.

Pseudo SU(3) shell model: Normal parity bands in odd-mass nuclei

A pseudo shell SU(3) model description of normal parity bands in 159-Tb is presented. The Hamiltonian includes spherical Nilsson single-particle energies, the quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interactions, as well as three rotor terms. A systematic parametrization is introduced, accompained by a detailed discussion of the effect each term in the Hamiltonian has on the energy spectrum. Yrast and excited band wavefunctions are analyzed together with their B(E2) values.

Quasi-SU(3) truncation scheme for even-even sd-shell nuclei

The Quasi-SU(3) symmetry was uncovered in full pf and sdg shell-model calculations for both even-even and odd-even nuclei. It manifests itself through a dominance of single-particle and quadrupole-quadrupole terms in the Hamiltonian used to describe well-deformed nuclei. A practical consequence of the quasi-SU(3) symmetry is an efficient basis truncation scheme. In a recent work was shown that when this type of Hamiltonian is diagonalized in an SU(3) basis, only a few irreducible represntations (irreps) of SU(3) are needed to describe the Yrast band, the leading S = 0 irrep augmented with the leading S = 1 irreps in the proton and neutron subspaces. In the present article the quasi-SU(3) truncation scheme is used, in conjunction with a "realistic but schematic" Hamiltonian that includes the most important multipole terms, to describe the energy spectra and B(E2) transition strengths of 20-Ne, 22-Ne, 24-Mg and 28-Si. The effect of the size of the Hilbert space on both sets of observables is discussed, as well as the structure of the Yrast band and the importance of the various terms in the Hamiltonian.

Solitons and wavelets: Scale analysis and bases

We use a one-scale similarity analysis which gives specific relations between the velocity, amplitude and width of localized solutions of nonlinear differential equations, whose exact solutions are generally difficult to obtain. We also introduce kink-antikink compact solutions for the nonlinear-nonlinear dispersion K(2,2) equation, and we construct a basis of scaling functions similar with those used in the multiresolution analysis. These approaches are useful in describing nonlinear structures and patterns, as well as in the derivation of the time evolution of initial data for nonlinear equations with finite wavelength soliton solutions.

Similarity Analysis of Nonlinear Equations and Bases of Finite Wavelength Solitons

We introduce a generalized similarity analysis which grants a qualitative description of the localised solutions of any nonlinear differential equation. This procedure provides relations between amplitude, width, and velocity of the solutions, and it is shown to be useful in analysing nonlinear structures like solitons, dublets, triplets, compact supported solitons and other patterns. We also introduce kink-antikink compact solutions for a nonlinear-nonlinear dispersion equation, and we construct a basis of finite wavelength functions having self-similar properties.

Soliton excitations as emitted clusters on nuclear surfaces

This work reports on calculations of the deformation energy of a nucleus plus an emitted cluster as a soliton moving on its surface. The potential barrier against the emission of a soliton is calculated within the macroscopic-microscopic method. The outer turning point of the barrier determines limitations on the geometrical and kinematical parameters for the formation of a surface soliton. For large asymmetry, the two-center shell model is used to assign a structure to the soliton. Calculations for $^{248}$N\lowercase{o} with the emission of a $^{40}$C\lowercase{a} soliton are reported; likewise for $^{224}$T\lowercase{h} with the emission of $^{16}$O. Except for necked shapes at the very first stages of soliton formation, the greatest portion of the deformation path displays rather compact configurations with large neck radii. These shape sequences correspond to allowable soliton velocities. Close to and just beyond the touching point configuration, where the shape becomes concave, the width and the velocity of the soliton approach zero. The calculations suggest that the emission of a $^{40}$C\lowercase{a} structure is quite probable due to a low potential barrier, whereas the emission of an $^{16}$O type soliton is rather unlikely due to the higher penetration barrier.

Shell model description of normal parity bands in odd-mass heavy deformed nuclei

The low-energy spectra and B(E2) electromagnetic transition strengths of 159Eu, 159Tb and 159Dy are described using the pseudo SU(3) model. Normal parity bands are built as linear combinations of SU(3) states, which are the direct product of SU(3) proton and neutron states with pseudo spin zero (for even number of nucleons) and pseudo spin 1/2 (for odd number of nucleons). Each of the many-particle states have a well-defined particle number and total angular momentum. The Hamiltonian includes spherical Nilsson single-particle energies, the quadrupole-quadrupole and pairing interactions, as well as three rotor terms which are diagonal in the SU(3) basis. The pseudo SU(3) model is shown to be a powerful tool to describe odd-mass heavy deformed nuclei.

The induced representations of Brauer algebra and the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of SO(n)

Induced representations of Brauer algebra $D_{f}(n)$ from $S_{f_{1}}\times S_{f_{2}}$ with $f_{1}+f_{2}=f$ are discussed. The induction coefficients (IDCs) or the outer-product reduction coefficients (ORCs) of $S_{f_{1}}\times S_{f_{2}}\uparrow D_{f}(n)$ with $f\leq 4$ up to a normalization factor are derived by using the linear equation method. Weyl tableaus for the corresponding Gel'fand basis of SO(n) are defined. The assimilation method for obtaining CG coefficients of SO(n) in the Gel'fand basis for no modification rule involved couplings from IDCs of Brauer algebra are proposed. Some isoscalar factors of $SO(n)\supset SO(n-1)$ for the resulting irrep $[λ_{1},~λ_{2},~ λ_{3},~λ_{4},\dot{0}]$ with $\sum\limits_{i=1}^{4}λ_{i}\leq .

A New Young Diagrammatic Method For Kronecker Products of O(n) and Sp(2m)

A new simple Young diagrammatic method for Kronecker products of O(n) and Sp(2m) is proposed based on representation theory of Brauer algebras. A general procedure for the decomposition of tensor products of representations for O(n) and Sp(2m) is outlined, which is similar to that for U(n) known as the Littlewood rules together with trace contractions from a Brauer algebra and some modification rules given by King.

A particle-number-conserving solution to the generalized pairing problem

An exact, number-conserving solution to the generalized, orbit-dependent pairing problem is derived by introducing an infinite-dimensional algebra. A method for obtaining eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding Hamiltonian is also given. The relevance of the orbit-dependent pairing solution is demonstrated by comparing predictions of the model with shell-model calculations.

A complementary group technique for a resolution of the outer multiplicity problem of SU(n): (I) Littlewood rule and a complementary group of SU(n)

A complementary group to SU(n) is found that realizes all features of the Littlewood rule for Kronecker products of SU(n) representations. This is accomplished by considering a state of SU(n) to be a special Gel'fand state of the complementary group {\cal U}(2n-2). The labels of {\cal U}(2n-2) can be used as the outer multiplicity labels needed to distinguish multiple occurrences of irreducible representations (irreps) in the SU(n)\times SU(n)\downarrow SU(n) decomposition that is obtained from the Littlewood rule. Furthermore, this realization can be used to determine SU(n)\supset SU(n-1)\times U(1) Reduced Wigner Coefficients (RWCs) and Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients (CGCs) of SU(n), using algebraic or numeric methods, in either the canonical or a noncanonical basis. The method is recursive in that it uses simpler RWCs or CGCs with one symmetric irrep in conjunction with standard recoupling procedures. New explicit formulae for the multiplicity for SU(3) and SU(4) are used to illustrate the theory.

A complementary group technique for the resolution of the outer multiplicity problem of SU(n): (II) A recoupling approach to the solution of SU(3)\supset U(2) reduced Wigner coefficients

A general procedure for the derivation of SU(3)\supset U(2) reduced Wigner coefficients for the coupling (λ_{1}μ_{1})\times (λ_{2}μ_{2})\downarrow (λμ)^η, where ηis the outer multiplicity label needed in the decomposition, is proposed based on a recoupling approach according to the complementary group technique given in (I). It is proved that the non-multiplicity-free reduced Wigner coefficients of SU(n) are not unique with respect to canonical outer multiplicity labels, and can be transformed from one set of outer multiplicity labels to another. The transformation matrices are elements of SO(m), where m is the number of occurrence of the corresponding irrep (λμ) in the decomposition (λ_{1}μ_{1})\times (λ_{2}μ_{2})\downarrow (λμ). Thus, a kind of the reduced Wigner coefficients with multiplicity is obtained after a special SO(m) transformation. New features of this kind of reduced Wigner coefficients and the differences from the reduced Wigner coefficients with other choice of the multiplicity label given previously are discussed. The method can also be applied to the derivation of general SU(n) Wigner or reduced Wigner coefficients with multiplicity. Algebraic expression of another kind of reduced Wigner coefficients, the so-called reduced auxiliary Wigner coefficients for SU(3)\supset U(2), are also obtained.

Effects of Pairing in the Pseudo-SU(3) Model

An extended version of the pseudo-SU(3) model which includes both spin and proton-neutron degrees of freedom is used to study the influence of the pairing interaction on K-band mixing, B(E2) values and quadrupole moments. Using the asymmetric rotor model as a backdrop, specific consequences of a many-particle shell-model based description of these collective properties are demonstrated and fundamental limits of the collective model's approach are investigated. Finally, the pseudo-SU(3) model, including representation mixing induced by pairing, is used to calculate the energies of 140Ce and the results are compared to experimental data and other theories.
