Chiral states induced by symmetry-breaking in $α-T_3$ lattices: Magnetic field effect

The sublattice-symmetry breaking in the $α-T_3$ lattice leads to a bandgap opening. A defect line in the substrate on which the $α-T_3$ lattice is deposited can be viewed as a topological change in the substrate that induces translational in-plane symmetry breaking, resulting in mid-gap states. These topologically protected states are confined along the defect line and exhibit preferential directional motion, with different signs for the different Dirac valleys. Within this context, we investigate how these unidirectional interface chiral states are affected in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and how they can be tuned by varying the controlling system parameter $α$. The latter tunes the $α-T_3$ structure from a honeycomb-like lattice ($α=0$) to a dice lattice ($α=1$). Our theoretical framework is based on the continuum approximation described by a $3\times 3$ matrix Hamiltonian with a sublattice symmetry-breaking term given by $Δ(x) diag(1,\quad -1,\quad 1)$, assuming $Δ(x)$ as a kink-like mass potential profile. Results for dispersion relations and wavefunction distributions for different $α$ parameters and magnetic field amplitudes are discussed. We demonstrate lifting of Landau levels degeneracy and of valley degeneracy. Our findings pave the way for proposing valley filter devices based on any evolutionary stage between the honeycomb-like and dice lattice structures of the $α-T_3$ phase, controlled by external fields.

Electronic properties of multilayered Lieb, transition, and Kagome lattices

Based on the interconvertibility feature shared between monolayer Lieb and Kagome lattices, which allows mapping transition lattice's stages between these two limits ($π/2 \leqθ\leq 2π/3$), in this work we extend the recently proposed one-control ($θ$) parameter tight-binding model for the case of a multilayer Lieb-Kagome system, by considering the two most-common stacks: AA and AB (Bernal). We systematically study the band transformations between the two lattices by adjusting the interlayer hopping and distance, with or without considering the influence of the nearest interlayer neighbors, for different numbers of stacked layers, and under the application of an external perpendicular electric field. The energetic changes are understood from the perspective of the layer dependence of the pseudospin components and the total probability density distributions. The present framework provides an appropriate and straightforward theoretical approach to continuously investigate the evolution of electronic properties in the multilayer Lieb-Kagome system under various external effects.

Topological phase transitions in strained Lieb-Kagome lattices

Lieb and Kagome lattices exhibit two-dimensional topological insulator behavior with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological classification when considering spin-orbit coupling. In this study, we used a general tight-binding Hamiltonian with a morphological control parameter $θ$ to describe the Lieb ($θ=π/2$), Kagome ($θ=2π/3$), and transition lattices ($π/2<θ<2π/3$) while considering intrinsic spin-orbit (ISO) coupling. We systematically investigated the effects of shear and uniaxial strains, applied along different crystallographic directions, on the electronic spectrum of these structures. Our findings reveal that these deformations can induce topological phase transitions by modifying the structural lattice angle associated with the interconversibility process between Lieb and Kagome, the amplitude of the strain, and the magnitude of the ISO coupling. These transitions are confirmed by the evolution of Berry curvature and by changes in the Chern number when the gap closes. Additionally, by analyzing hypothetical strain scenarios in which the hopping and ISO coupling parameters remain intentionally unchanged, our results demonstrated that the strain-induced phase transitions arise from changes in the hopping and ISO coupling parameters.

Linear and nonlinear optical absorption of position-dependent mass oscillators

We study the linear $(α^{(1)} )$, nonlinear $(α^{(3)})$ and total $(α)$ optical absorptions of position-dependent mass oscillators (PDMOs). We consider three mass distributions $(m(x,λ))$ used to describe semiconducting structures; $λ$ is a deformation parameter. In the limit $λ\rightarrow 0$, the three systems describe electrons in a parabolic quantum well. For the system $m_1(x)=m_0/[1+(λx)^2 ]^2$ we observe that $α^{(1)}(ω)) (α^{(3)}(ω))$ increases (decreases) with increasing $λ$. For $m_2 (x)=m_0 [1+(λx)^2 ]$ and $m_3(x)=m_0 [1 + tanh^2 (λx) ]$ the opposite occurs. In the light of the PDMO approach we observe the $m_2 (x)$ and $m_3(x)$ systems are very similar, and can not be distinguished by optical transitions between the two lowest electronic levels. We also discussed about the total optical absorption of the systems.

Monolayer phosphorene under time-dependent magnetic field

We obtain the exact wave function of a monolayer phosphorene under a low- intensity time-dependent magnetic field using the dynamical invariant method. We calculate the quantum-mechanical energy expectation value and the transition probability for a constant and an oscillatory magnetic field. For the former we observe that the Landau level energy varies linearly with the quantum numbers n and m and the magnetic field intensity B_0. No transition takes place. For the latter, we observe that the energy oscillates in time, increasing linearly with the Landau level n and m and nonlinearly with the magnetic field. The (k,l) to (n,m) transitions take place only for l=m. We investigate the (0,0) to (n,0) and (1,l) and (2,l) probability transitions.

Entropy and Information of a harmonic oscillator in a time-varying electric field in 2D and 3D noncommutative spaces

We analyzed the noncommutativity effects on the Fisher information (F_(r,p)) and Shannon entropies (S_(r,p)) of a harmonic oscillator immersed in a time-varying electric field in two and three dimensions. We find the exact solutions of the respective time-dependent Schrödinger equation and use them to calculate the Fisher information and the Shannon entropy for the simplest case corresponding the lowest-lying state of each system. While there is no problem in defining the Shannon entropy for noncommutating spaces, the definition of the Fisher information had to be modified to satisfy the Cramer-Rao inequalities. We observe for both systems, how the Fisher information and Shannon entropy in position and momentum change due to the noncommutativity of the space. We verified that the Bialynicki-Birula-Mycielski (BBM) entropic uncertainty relation still holds in the systems considered.
