Independent freezing of charge and spin dynamics in La1.5Sr0.5CoO4

We present elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements characterizing peculiar short-range charge-orbital and spin order in the layered perovskite material La1.5Sr0.5CoO4. We find that below Tc~750 K holes introduced by Sr doping lose mobility and enter a statically ordered {\it charge glass} phase with loosely correlated checkerboard arrangement of empty and occupied d{3z2-r2} orbitals (Co3+ and Co2+). The dynamics of the resultant mixed spin system is governed by the anisotropic nature of the crystal-field Hamiltonian and the peculiar exchange pattern produced by the orbital order. It undergoes a {\it spin freezing} transition at much a lower temperature, Ts~30 K.

Persistent X-Ray Photoconductivity and Percolation of Metallic Clusters in Charge-Ordered Manganites

Charge-ordered manganites of composition $\rm Pr_{1-x}(Ca_{1-y}Sr_{y})_{x}MnO_3$ exhibit persistent photoconductivity upon exposure to x-rays. This is not always accompanied by a significant increase in the {\it number} of conduction electrons as predicted by conventional models of persistent photoconductivity. An analysis of the x-ray diffraction patterns and current-voltage characteristics shows that x-ray illumination results in a microscopically phase separated state in which charge-ordered insulating regions provide barriers against charge transport between metallic clusters. The dominant effect of x-ray illumination is to enhance the electron {\it mobility} by lowering or removing these barriers. A mechanism based on magnetic degrees of freedom is proposed.

Interplay between charge, orbital and magnetic order in Pr_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3

We report resonant x-ray scattering studies of charge and orbital order in Pr_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_3 with x=0.4 and 0.5. Below the ordering temperature, T_O=245 K, the charge and orbital order intensities follow the same temperature dependence, including an increase at the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, T_N. High resolution measurements reveal, however, that long range orbital order is never achieved. Rather, an orbital domain state is formed. Above T_O, the charge order fluctuations are more highly correlated than the orbital fluctuations. Similar phenomenology is observed in a magnetic field. We conclude that the charge order drives the orbital order at the transition.
