The Mean Value of $L(\tfrac{1}{2},χ)$ in the Hyperelliptic Ensemble

We obtain an asymptotic formula for the first moment of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over function fields at the central point $s=\tfrac{1}{2}$. Specifically, we compute the expected value of $L(\tfrac{1}{2},χ)$ for an ensemble of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ over a fixed finite field as $g\rightarrow\infty$. Our approach relies on the use of the analogue of the approximate functional equation for such $L$--functions. The results presented here are the function field analogues of those obtained previously by Jutila in the number-field setting and are consistent with recent general conjectures for the moments of $L$--functions motivated by Random Matrix Theory.

Rate of convergence of linear functions on the unitary group

We study the rate of convergence to a normal random variable of the real and imaginary parts of Tr(AU), where U is an N x N random unitary matrix and A is a deterministic complex matrix. We show that the rate of convergence is O(N^{-2 + b}), with 0 <= b < 1, depending only on the asymptotic behaviour of the singular values of A; for example, if the singular values are non-degenerate, different from zero and O(1) as N -> infinity, then b=0. The proof uses a Berry-Esse'en inequality for linear combinations of eigenvalues of random unitary, matrices, and so appropriate for strongly dependent random variables.

On twin primes associated with the Hawkins random sieve

We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of k-difference twin primes associated with the Hawkins random sieve, which is a probabilistic model of the Eratosthenes sieve. The formula for k=1 was obtained by Wunderlich [Acta Arith. 26 (1974), 59--81]. We here extend this to k \geq 2 and generalize it to all l-tuples of Hawkins primes.

Eigenfunction Statistics on Quantum Graphs

We investigate the spatial statistics of the energy eigenfunctions on large quantum graphs. It has previously been conjectured that these should be described by a Gaussian Random Wave Model, by analogy with quantum chaotic systems, for which such a model was proposed by Berry in 1977. The autocorrelation functions we calculate for an individual quantum graph exhibit a universal component, which completely determines a Gaussian Random Wave Model, and a system-dependent deviation. This deviation depends on the graph only through its underlying classical dynamics. Classical criteria for quantum universality to be met asymptotically in the large graph limit (i.e. for the non-universal deviation to vanish) are then extracted. We use an exact field theoretic expression in terms of a variant of a supersymmetric sigma model. A saddle-point analysis of this expression leads to the estimates. In particular, intensity correlations are used to discuss the possible equidistribution of the energy eigenfunctions in the large graph limit. When equidistribution is asymptotically realized, our theory predicts a rate of convergence that is a significant refinement of previous estimates. The universal and system-dependent components of intensity correlation functions are recovered by means of an exact trace formula which we analyse in the diagonal approximation, drawing in this way a parallel between the field theory and semiclassics. Our results provide the first instance where an asymptotic Gaussian Random Wave Model has been established microscopically for eigenfunctions in a system with no disorder.

Localised eigenfunctions in Seba billiards

We describe some new families of quasimodes for the Laplacian perturbed by the addition of a potential formally described by a Dirac delta function. As an application we find, under some additional hypotheses on the spectrum, subsequences of eigenfunctions of Seba billiards that localise around a pair of unperturbed eigenfunctions.

Quantum chaotic resonances from short periodic orbits

We present an approach to calculating the quantum resonances and resonance wave functions of chaotic scattering systems, based on the construction of states localized on classical periodic orbits and adapted to the dynamics. Typically only a few of such states are necessary for constructing a resonance. Using only short orbits (with periods up to the Ehrenfest time), we obtain approximations to the longest living states, avoiding computation of the background of short living states. This makes our approach considerably more efficient than previous ones. The number of long lived states produced within our formulation is in agreement with the fractal Weyl law conjectured recently in this setting. We confirm the accuracy of the approximations using the open quantum baker map as an example.

On the mean values of Dirichlet L-functions

We study the 2k-th power moment of Dirichlet L-functions L(s,χ) at the centre of the critical strip (s=1/2), where the average is over all primitive characters χ(mod q). We extend to this case the hybrid Euler-Hadamard product results of Gonek, Hughes & Keating for the Riemann zeta function. This allows us to recover conjectures for the moments based on random matrix models, incorporating the arithmetical terms in a natural way.

On the mean values of L-functions in orthogonal and symplectic families

Hybrid Euler-Hadamard products have previously been studied for the Riemann zeta function on its critical line and for Dirichlet L-functions in the context of the calculation of moments and connections with Random Matrix Theory. According to the Katz-Sarnak classification, these are believed to represent families of L-function with unitary symmetry. We here extend the formalism to families with orthogonal & symplectic symmetry. Specifically, we establish formulae for real quadratic Dirichlet L-functions and for the L-functions associated with primitive Hecke eigenforms of weight 2 in terms of partial Euler and Hadamard products. We then prove asymptotic formulae for some moments of these partial products and make general conjectures based on results for the moments of characteristic polynomials of random matrices.

Lower Order Terms for the One-Level Density of Elliptic Curve L-Functions

It is believed that, in the limit as the conductor tends to infinity, correlations between the zeros of elliptic curve $L$-functions averaged within families follow the distribution laws of the eigenvalues of random matrices drawn from the orthogonal group. For test functions with restricted support, this is known to be the true for the one- and two-level densities of zeros within the families studied to date. However, for finite conductor Miller's experimental data reveal an interesting discrepancy from these limiting results. Here we use the L-functions ratios conjectures to calculate the 1-level density for the family of even quadratic twists of an elliptic curve L-function for large but finite conductor. This gives a formula for the leading and lower order terms up to an error term that is conjectured to be significantly smaller. The lower order terms explain many of the features of the zero statistics for relatively small conductor and model the very slow convergence to the infinite conductor limit. However, our main observation is that they do not capture the behaviour of zeros in the important region very close to the critical point and so do not explain Miller's discrepancy. This therefore implies that a more accurate model for statistics near to this point needs to be developed.

On the resonance eigenstates of an open quantum baker map

We study the resonance eigenstates of a particular quantization of the open baker map. For any admissible value of Planck's constant, the corresponding quantum map is a subunitary matrix, and the nonzero component of its spectrum is contained inside an annulus in the complex plane, $|z_{min}|\leq |z|\leq |z_{max}|$. We consider semiclassical sequences of eigenstates, such that the moduli of their eigenvalues converge to a fixed radius $r$. We prove that, if the moduli converge to $r=|z_{max}|$, then the sequence of eigenstates converges to a fixed phase space measure $ρ_{max}$. The same holds for sequences with eigenvalue moduli converging to $|z_{min}|$, with a different limit measure $ρ_{min}$. Both these limiting measures are supported on fractal sets, which are trapped sets of the classical dynamics. For a general radius $|z_{min}|< r < |z_{max}|$, we identify families of eigenstates with precise self-similar properties.

Quantum ergodicity on graphs

We investigate the equidistribution of the eigenfunctions on quantum graphs in the high-energy limit. Our main result is an estimate of the deviations from equidistribution for large well-connected graphs. We use an exact field-theoretic expression in terms of a variant of the supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-model. Our estimate is based on a saddle-point analysis of this expression and leads to a criterion for when equidistribution emerges asymptotically in the limit of large graphs. Our theory predicts a rate of convergence that is a significant refinement of previous estimates, long-assumed to be valid for quantum chaotic systems, agreeing with them in some situations but not all. We discuss specific examples for which the theory is tested numerically.

Fractional $\hbar$-scaling for quantum kicked rotors without cantori

Previous studies of quantum delta-kicked rotors have found momentum probability distributions with a typical width (localization length $L$) characterized by fractional $\hbar$-scaling, ie $L \sim \hbar^{2/3}$ in regimes and phase-space regions close to `golden-ratio' cantori. In contrast, in typical chaotic regimes, the scaling is integer, $L \sim \hbar^{-1}$. Here we consider a generic variant of the kicked rotor, the random-pair-kicked particle (RP-KP), obtained by randomizing the phases every second kick; it has no KAM mixed phase-space structures, like golden-ratio cantori, at all. Our unexpected finding is that, over comparable phase-space regions, it also has fractional scaling, but $L \sim \hbar^{-2/3}$. A semiclassical analysis indicates that the $\hbar^{2/3}$ scaling here is of quantum origin and is not a signature of classical cantori.

A model for chaotic dielectric microresonators

We develop a random-matrix model of two-dimensional dielectric resonators which combines internal wave chaos with the deterministic Fresnel laws for reflection and refraction at the interfaces. The model is used to investigate the statistics of the laser threshold and line width (lifetime and Petermann factor of the resonances) when the resonator is filled with an active medium. The laser threshold decreases for increasing refractive index $n$ and is smaller for TM polarization than for TE polarization, but is almost independent of the number of out-coupling modes $N$. The Petermann factor in the line width of the longest-living resonance also decreases for increasing $n$ and scales as $\sqrt{N}$, but is less sensitive to polarization. For resonances of intermediate lifetime, the Petermann factor scales linearly with $N$. These qualitative parametric dependencies are consistent with the random-matrix theory of resonators with small openings. However, for a small refractive index where the resonators are very open, the details of the statistics become non-universal. This is demonstrated by comparison with a particular dynamical model.

Periodic orbit bifurcations and scattering time delay fluctuations

We study fluctuations of the Wigner time delay for open (scattering) systems which exhibit mixed dynamics in the classical limit. It is shown that in the semiclassical limit the time delay fluctuations have a distribution that differs markedly from those which describe fully chaotic (or strongly disordered) systems: their moments have a power law dependence on a semiclassical parameter, with exponents that are rational fractions. These exponents are obtained from bifurcating periodic orbits trapped in the system. They are universal in situations where sufficiently long orbits contribute. We illustrate the influence of bifurcations on the time delay numerically using an open quantum map.

Semiclassical structure of chaotic resonance eigenfunctions

We study the resonance (or Gamow) eigenstates of open chaotic systems in the semiclassical limit, distinguishing between left and right eigenstates of the non-unitary quantum propagator, and also between short-lived and long-lived states. The long-lived left (right) eigenstates are shown to concentrate as $\hbar\to 0$ on the forward (backward) trapped set of the classical dynamics. The limit of a sequence of eigenstates $\{ψ(\hbar)\}_{\hbar\to 0}$ is found to exhibit a remarkably rich structure in phase space that depends on the corresponding limiting decay rate. These results are illustrated for the open baker map, for which the probability density in position space is observed to have self-similarity properties.

Localization and its consequences for quantum walk algorithms and quantum communication

The exponential speed-up of quantum walks on certain graphs, relative to classical particles diffusing on the same graph, is a striking observation. It has suggested the possibility of new fast quantum algorithms. We point out here that quantum mechanics can also lead, through the phenomenon of localization, to exponential suppression of motion on these graphs (even in the absence of decoherence). In fact, for physical embodiments of graphs, this will be the generic behaviour. It also has implications for proposals for using spin networks, including spin chains, as quantum communication channels.

Quantum ergodicity for graphs related to interval maps

We prove quantum ergodicity for a family of graphs that are obtained from ergodic one-dimensional maps of an interval using a procedure introduced by Pakonski et al (J. Phys. A, v. 34, 9303-9317 (2001)). As observables we take the L^2 functions on the interval. The proof is based on the periodic orbit expansion of a majorant of the quantum variance. Specifically, given a one-dimensional, Lebesgue-measure-preserving map of an interval, we consider an increasingly refined sequence of partitions of the interval. To this sequence we associate a sequence of graphs, whose directed edges correspond to elements of the partitions and on which the classical dynamics approximates the Perron-Frobenius operator corresponding to the map. We show that, except possibly for subsequences of density 0, the eigenstates of the quantum graphs equidistribute in the limit of large graphs. For a smaller class of observables we also show that the Egorov property, a correspondence between classical and quantum evolution in the semiclassical limit, holds for the quantum graphs in question.
