Revisiting spin alignment of heavy mesons in its inclusive production

In the heavy quark limit inclusive production rate of a heavy meson can be factorized, in which the nonperturbative effect related to the heavy meson can be characterized by matrix elements defined in the heavy quark effective theory. Using this factorization, predictions for the full spin density matrix of a spin-1 and spin-2 meson can be obtained and they are characterized only by one coefficient representing the nonperturbative effect. Predictions for spin-1 heavy meson are compared with experiment performed at $e^+e^-$ colliders in the energy range from $\sqrt{s}=10.5$GeV to $\sqrt{s}=91$GeV, a complete agreement is found for $D^*$- and $B^*$-meson. For $D^{**}$ meson, our prediction suffers a large correction, as indicated by experimental data. There exists another approach by taking heavy mesons as bound systems, in which the total angular momentum of the light degrees of freedom is 1/2 and 3/2 for spin-1 and spin-2 meson respectively, then the diagonal parts of spin density matrices can be obtained. However, there are distinct differences in the predictions from the two approaches and they are discussed in detail.

I=2 Pion Scattering Length from a Coarse Anisotropic Lattice Calculation

Using the tadpole improved clover Wilson quark action on coarse anisotropic lattices, the $ππ$ scattering length in the I=2 channel is calculated within quenched approximation. We show that such a calculation is feasible using small lattices on small computers provided that the finite volume and finite lattice spacing errors are under control. Our results are extrapolated towards the chiral, infinite volume and continuum limit. Comparisons of our results with previous lattice results from JLQCD collaboration, the new results from E865 experiment, and the results from Chiral Perturbation Theory are made. Good agreements are found.

A QCD-Analysis for Radiative Decays of $Υ$ into $f_2(1270)$

We perform a QCD analysis for the radiative decay of a heavy $^3S_1$ quarkonium into the tensor meson $f_2(1270)$. We make an attempt to separate the nonperturbative effect related to the quarkonium and that related to the tensor meson, the former is represented by NRQCD matrix elements, while the later is parameterized by distribution amplitudes of gluons in the tensor meson at twist-2 level and at twist-3 level. We find that at twist-2 level the helicity $λ$ of the tensor meson can be 0 and 2 and the amplitude with $λ=2$ is suppressed. At twist-3 level the tensor meson can have $λ=1$. A comparison with experiment is made, an agreement of our results with experiment can be found. We also briefly discuss the radiative decay into $η$ and obtain a prediction for $Υ\toγ+η$.

Exclusive decay of $1^{- -}$ heavy quarkonium into photon and two pions

We study the exclusive decay of $1^{--}$ heavy quarkonium into one photon and two pions in the kinematic region, where the two-pion system has a invariant mass which is much smaller than the mass of heavy quarkonium. Neglecting effects suppressed by the inverse of the heavy quark mass, the decay amplitude can be factorized, in which the nonperturbative effect related to heavy quarkonium is represented by a non-relativistic QCD matrix element, and that related to the two pions is represented by a distribution amplitude of two gluons in the isoscalar pion pair. By taking the asymptotic form for the distribution amplitude and by using chiral perturbative theory we are able to obtain numerical predictions for the decay. Numerical results show that the decay of $\jpsi$ can be observed at BEPC and at CESR. Experiment observation of this process in this kinematic region at BEPC and CESR can provide information about how gluons are converted into the two pions and may supply a unique approach to study $ I = 0$ s-wave $ππ$ scattering.

Exclusive decay of $J/Ψ$ into a lepton pair combined with light hadrons

We study the exclusive decay of $J/Ψ$ into a lepton pair combined with light hadrons in the kinematic region, specified by that the total energy of the light hadrons is much smaller than $m_c$, the mass of the $c$-quark. In this region, the nonperturbaive effect related to $J/Ψ$ and that related to the light hadrons can be separated, the former is represented by a NRQCD matrix element, while the later is represented by a matrix element of a correlator of electric chromofields. The results are obtained in a axial gauge by assumming that contributions from two-gluon emmssion are dominant. But we can show that these results can be obtained without the assumption in arbitrary gauges. A discussion of the results are presented.

Semi-Inclusive B\to K(K^*) X Decays with Initial Bound State Effects

The effects of initial $b$ quark bound state for the semi-inclusive decays $B\to K(K^*) X$ are studied using light cone expansion and heavy quark effective theory methods. We find that the initial bound state effects on the branching ratios and CP asymmetries are small. In the light cone expansion approach, the CP-averaged branching ratios are increased by about 2% with respect to the free $b$-quark decay. For $\bar B^0 \to K^- (K^{*-}) X$, the CP-averaged branching ratios are sensitive to the phase $γ$ and the CP asymmetry can be as large as 7% (14%), whereas for $B^-\to \bar K^0 (\bar K^{*0})X$ the CP-averaged branching ratios are not sensitive to $γ$ and the CP asymmetries are small ($< 1%$). The CP-averaged branching ratios are predicted to be in the ranges $(0.53 \sim 1.5)\times 10^{-4}$ [$(0.25 \sim 2.0)\times 10^{-4}$] for $\bar B^0 \to K^- (K^{*-})X$ and $(0.77 \sim 0.84)\times 10^{-4}$ [$(0.67 \sim 0.74)\times 10^{-4}$] for $B^-\to \bar K^0 (\bar K^{*0}) X$, depending on the value of the CP violating phase $γ$. In the heavy quark effective theory approach, we find that the branching ratios are decreased by about 10% and the CP asymmetries are not affected. These predictions can be tested in the near future.

$B\to ϕK$ and $B\to ϕX_s$ in the Heavy Quark Limit

We study $B\to ϕK$ and $B\to ϕX_s$ decays in the heavy quark limit using perturbative QCD. The next leading order corrections introduce substantial modifications to the naive factorization results (more than 50%). The branching ratio $Br(B\to ϕK)$ is predicted to be in the range $(F^{B\to K}_1(m^2_ϕ)/0.33)^2(3.5\sim 4.2) \times 10^{-6}$ which is within the one $σ$ allowed region from the central value of $6.2\times 10^{-6}$ measured by CLEO, but outside the one $σ$ allowed region from the central value of $17.2\times 10^{-6}$ measured by BELLE for reasonable $F_1^{B\to K}$. For the semi-inclusive decay $B\to ϕX_s$ we also include initial bound state effect in the heavy quark limit which decreases the branching ratio by about 10%. $Br(B\to ϕX_s)$ is predicted to be in the range $(5.1\sim 6.3)\times 10^{-5}$.

The Color Singlet Relativistic Correction in $J/ψ$ Photoproduction

The $O(v^2)$ relativistic correction for inelastic $J/ψ$ photoproduction, in which heavy quark pairs are in the dominant Fock state of the quarkonium, is studied in the framework of NRQCD factorization. An assessment of its significance, particularly in comparison to the color octet contributions, is made. It is found that the impact on the energy distribution is negative in certain regions of phase space. The predictions are compared with photoproduction data from DESY-HERA.

Effects of The Initial Hadron in $B\to J/ψ+X$

In the framework of HQET inclusive decays of b-flavored hadrons can be handled as decays of the free b-quark approximately. We analyse the correction to this approximation for the inclusive decays into a polarized $J/ψ$,the correction is characterized by two matrix elements defined in HQET. For the $J/ψ$ we use NRQCD to parameterize the formation of the $c\bar c$ pair into $J/ψ$. Numerically the correction is remarkably large, it can be at the level of 30% and it is mainly due to the Fermi-motion of the $b$-quark. With this correction we give a new determination for combinations of two NRQCD matrix elements.

Relativistic Corrections for Plarized J/Ψ-Production in b-quark decay

We analyse the structure of relativistic corrections in the inclusive production of polarized $J/Ψ$ from b-quark decay. The analysis is performed not only for the production channel in which the $c\bar c$ pair is a color sinlet, but also for the channels in which the $c\bar c$ is a color octet. We find that the correction in the color-singlet channel at the tree-level is completely determined by the decay constant of $J/Ψ$, while in the color-octet channels the corrections are characterized by three matrix elements defined in NRQCD, whose numerical values are unknown. We discuss the impact of these corrections on the polarized $J/Ψ$% -production, and the impact is so significant that the predictions based on the analysis for the considered process may be unreliable. Finally, we propose an integrated spin observable to measure the polarization of $J/Ψ$%

The Mass Effect in Quarkonium Decay

In the NRQCD factorization for productions and decays of a quakonium the difference between the quarkonium mass and the twice of the heavy quark mass is neglected at the leading order of the small velocity expansion. The effect of this difference is included in the relativistic correction. We attempt to define the difference in terms of NRQCD matrix elements and to separate the effect of the difference in several decays. It turns out that the total relativistic correcttion can be estimated by the difference. Numerically the correction will enhance the decay widths considered here.

A Study of Gluon Propagator on Coarse Lattice

We study gluon propagator in Landau gauge with lattice QCD, where we use an improved lattice action. The calculation of gluon propagator is performed on lattices with the lattice spacing from 0.40 fm to 0.24 fm and with the lattice volume from $(2.40 fm)^4$ to $(4.0 fm)^4$. We try to fit our results by two different ways, in the first one we interpret the calculated gluon propagators as a function of the continuum momentum, while in the second we interpret the propagators as a function of the lattice momentum. In the both we use models which are the same in continuum limit. A qualitative agreement between two fittings is found.

$J/Ψ$-Production at Photon-Photon Colliders as a Probe of the Color Octet Mechanism

We study $J/Ψ$ production at photon-photon colliders, which can be realised with Compton scaterring of laser photons at $e^+e^-$ colliders. We find that the production rate through the color-octet channel is comparable to that through the color-singlet channel. Experimentally the two mechanisms can be studied separately because the processes have different signals.

Higher Twist Effect in Inclusive Quarkonium Photoproduction

We analyze higher twist effect in photoproduction of quarkonium, where the quarkonium is a spin-triplet, S-wave state. We find that the nonperturbative effect of next-to-leading twist is contained in three correlation functions related to the initial hadron and some of the effect of next-to-leading twist is only suppressed by the inverse of the mass square of the quarkonium. A naive estimation indicates that the effect can be significant for charmonium. In the analysis we only take the leading order in the small velocity expansion for the nonperturbative parts related to the quarkonium. Possible corrections from higher orders, especially, corrections from color-octet states are discussed in detail.

Perturbative Prediction for Parton Fragmentation into Heavy Hadron

By expanding functions of parton fragmentation into a heavy hadron in the inverse of the heavy quark mass $m_Q$ we attempt to factorize them into perturbative- and nonperturbative parts. In our approach the nonperturbative parts can be defined as matrix elements in heavy quark effective theory, the shape of the functions is predicted by perturbative QCD. In this work we neglect effect at order of $m_Q^{-2}$ and calculate the perturbative parts at one-loop level for heavy quark- and gluon fragmentation. We compare our results from leading log approximation with experimental results from $e^+e^-$ colliders and find a deviation below or at 10% level. Adding effect of higher order in $α_s$ it can be expected to reduce the deviation. The size of matrix elements appearing at the order we consider for several types of heavy hadrons is determined.

The Mass Spectrum of Light and Heavy Hadrons from Improved Lattice Actions

We use improved lattice actions for glue, light quarks and heavy quarks for which we use lattice NRQCD to compute hadron masses. Our results are in good agreement with experiment, except for charmed hadrons. It seems that charmed quar ks are not well approximated as heavy quarks nor as light quarks.

Inclusive Photoproduction of Polarized $^3P_1$ Quarkonium

We analyse inclusive photoproduction of polarized $^3P_1$ quarkonium in the framework of QCD. To separate nonperturbative and perturbative parts in the density matrix of the produced quarkonium we use a method , which is equivalent to the diagramatic expansion widely used in analysing deeply inelastic scatterings. A systematic expansion in a small velocity $v$, with which a heavy quark moves inside the quarkonium in its rest frame, is performed for the nonperturbative parts, and they are expressed as matrix elements in nonrelativistic QCD. At the leading order of $v$ there are four matrix elements representing nonperturbative physics. The perturbative parts are calculated at the leading order of coupling constants. Some numerical results, especially, numerical results for HERA are given.

Gluon Fragmentation into $^3P_J$ Quarkonium

The functions of the gluon fragmentation into $^3P_J$ quarkonium are calculated to order $α_s^2$. With the recent progress in analysing quarkonium systems in QCD we show explicitly how the socalled divergence in the limit of the zero-binding energy, which is related to $P$-wave quarkonia, is treated correctly in the case of fragmentation functions. The obtained fragmentation functions satisfy explicitly at the order of $α_s^2$ the Altarelli-Parisi equation and when $z\rightarrow 0$ they behave as $z^{-1}$ as expected. Some comments on the previous results are made.
