Closed-form approximations of fundamental quantities of Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi cosmologies from Symbolic Regression: I. Results on the Garcia-Bellido-Haugbølle parameterization

We introduce a novel set of analytic approximations for five fundamental functions in spherically symmetric, inhomogeneous Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) cosmologies, derived via Symbolic Regression (SR). Focusing on the constrained Garcia-Bellido-Haugboelle (GBH) parameterization, we sample the four-dimensional LTB parameter space using the bubble LTB numerical code and apply SR to reconstruct closed-form expressions for the radial and transverse scale factors A_parallel(r,t) and A_perp(r,t), the corresponding Hubble functions H_parallel(r,t) and H_perp(r,t), and the angular diameter distance D_A(z). Our best-fit formulas reproduce the numerical data with high precision: the relative mean error across all quantities remains below 0.3 percent, except for the radial Hubble function, where it reaches 1.4 percent. These compact expressions enable rapid evaluation of LTB predictions, supporting fast parameter scans, likelihood analyses, and model comparisons without time-consuming integrations. We provide explicit coefficients and discuss the domain of validity, demonstrating that SR-driven approximations can serve as robust surrogates for exact LTB solutions in both theoretical investigations and observational analyses.

Euclid: Forecasts on $Λ$CDM consistency tests with growth rate data

The large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe is an important probe for deviations from the canonical cosmological constant $Λ$ and cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model. A statistically significant detection of any deviations would signify the presence of new physics or the breakdown of any number of the underlying assumptions of the standard cosmological model or possible systematic errors in the data. In this paper, we quantify the ability of the LSS data products of the spectroscopic survey of the Euclid mission, together with other contemporary surveys, to improve the constraints on deviations from $Λ$CDM in the redshift range $0<z<1.75$. We consider both currently available growth rate data and simulated data with specifications from Euclid and external surveys, based on $Λ$CDM and a modified gravity (MoG) model with an evolving Newton's constant (denoted $μ$CDM), and carry out a binning method and a machine learning reconstruction, based on genetic algorithms (GAs), of several LSS null tests. Using the forecast Euclid growth data from the spectroscopic survey in the range $0.95<z<1.75$, we find that in combination with external data products (covering the range $0<z<0.95$), Euclid will be able to improve on current constraints of null tests of the LSS on average by a factor of eight when using a binning method and a factor of six when using the GAs. Our work highlights the need for synergies between Euclid and other surveys, but also the usefulness of statistical analyses, such as GAs, in order to disentangle any degeneracies in the cosmological parameters. Both are necessary to provide tight constraints over an extended redshift range and to probe for deviations from the $Λ$CDM model.

Euclid: Forecast constraints on consistency tests of the $Λ$CDM model

The standard cosmological model is based on the fundamental assumptions of a spatially homogeneous and isotropic universe on large scales. An observational detection of a violation of these assumptions at any redshift would immediately indicate the presence of new physics. We quantify the ability of the Euclid mission, together with contemporary surveys, to improve the current sensitivity of null tests of the canonical cosmological constant $Λ$ and the cold dark matter (LCDM) model in the redshift range $0<z<1.8$. We considered both currently available data and simulated Euclid and external data products based on a LCDM fiducial model, an evolving dark energy model assuming the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parameterization or an inhomogeneous Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi model with a cosmological constant $Λ$ (LLTB), and carried out two separate but complementary analyses: a machine learning reconstruction of the null tests based on genetic algorithms, and a theory-agnostic parametric approach based on Taylor expansion and binning of the data, in order to avoid assumptions about any particular model. We find that in combination with external probes, Euclid can improve current constraints on null tests of the LCDM by approximately a factor of three when using the machine learning approach and by a further factor of two in the case of the parametric approach. However, we also find that in certain cases, the parametric approach may be biased against or missing some features of models far from LCDM. Our analysis highlights the importance of synergies between Euclid and other surveys. These synergies are crucial for providing tighter constraints over an extended redshift range for a plethora of different consistency tests of some of the main assumptions of the current cosmological paradigm.

Self-interacting scalar field cosmologies: unified exact solutions and symmetries

We investigate a mechanism that generates the exact solutions of scalar field cosmologies in a unified way. The procedure investigated here permits to recover allmost all known solutions, and allows one to derive new solutions as well. In particular, we derive and discuss one novel solution defined in terms of the Lambert function. The solutions are organized in a classification which depends on the choice of a generating function which we have denoted by $x(ϕ)$ that reflects the underlying thermodynamics of the model. We also analyse and discuss the existence of form invariances and dualities between solutions. A general way of defining the latter in an appropriate fashion for scalar fields is put forward.

Reheating induced by competing decay modes

We address the problem of studying the decay of the inflaton field $ϕ$ to another scalar field $χ$ through parametric resonance in the case of a coupling that involves several decay modes. This amounts to the presence of extra harmonic terms in the perturbation of the $χ$ field dynamics. For the case of two frequencies we compute the geometry of the resonance regions, which is significantly altered due to the presence of non-cuspidal resonance regions associated to higher harmonics and to the emergence of instability `pockets'. We discuss the effect of this change in the efficiency of the energy transfer process for the simplest case of a coupling given by a combination of the two interaction terms of homogeneous degree usually considered in the literature. We find that the presence of higher harmonics has limited cosmological implications.

Scalar field phase dynamics in preheating

We study the model of a massive inflaton field $ϕ$ coupled to another scalar filed $χ$ with interaction term $g^2ϕ^2χ^2$ for the first stage of preheating. We obtain the the behavior of the phase in terms of the iteration of a simple family of circle maps. When expansion of the universe is taken into account the qualitative behavior of the phase and growth number evolution is reminiscent of the behavior found in the case without expansion.

Phase dynamics and particle production in preheating

We study a simple model of a massive inflaton field $ϕ$ coupled to another scalar filed $χ$ with interaction term $g^2ϕ^2χ^2$. We use the theory developed by Kofman {\em et al.} (Phys. Rev. D {\bf 56} (1997) 3258 [arXiv:hep-ph/9704452])for the first stage of preheating to give a full description of the dynamics of the $χ$ field modes, including the behaviour of the phase, in terms of the iteration of a simple family of circle maps. The parameters of this family of maps are a function of time when expansion of the universe is taken into account. With this more detailed description, we obtain a systematic study of the efficiency of particle production as a function of the inflaton field and coupling parameters, and we find that for $g \lesssim 3 \times 10^{-4}$ the broad resonance ceases during the first stage of preheating.
