Boronization-enabled I-mode on EAST tokamak with an expanded density window and favorable-configuration access

I-mode is a promising confinement regime for future fusion reactors because it combines enhanced energy confinement with L-mode-like particle transport and naturally ELM-free operation. Previous EAST I-mode studies were performed exclusively under lithium-conditioned wall conditions. Here we report the first systematic experimental investigation of I-mode under boronized wall conditions on EAST and compare it with an existing lithium-conditioned I-mode database at the same toroidal field, $B_t = 2.47$\,T. The boronized-wall dataset exhibits a substantially broader accessible density range, with the Greenwald fraction extending from $f_{\mathrm{GW}} = 0.26 - 0.77$ , compared with $f_{\mathrm{GW}} = 0.35 - 0.54$ under lithiation. A higher normalized $\mathrm{D}_α$ emission suggests that enhanced edge recycling may contribute to this density extension. A striking increase in favorable-configuration I-mode is also observed: $51\%$ boronized-wall discharges are obtained in favorable-configuration, compared with only $8\%$ lithium-conditioned discharges. These favorable-configuration cases are concentrated at high density and exhibit a deeper radial electric-field($E_r$) well and stronger $\mathbf{E_r}\times\mathbf{B}$ velocity shear. When ETRO is present, the associated transition between electron and ion turbulence is similar under the two wall conditions, although ETRO occurs less frequently ($15\%$) under boronization. An empirical EAST I-mode energy confinement scaling at fixed $B_t$ is obtained, $τ_E = 3.29 I_p^{0.51 \pm 0.10} P_{\mathrm{loss}}^{-0.53 \pm 0.05} \bar{n}_e^{0.08 \pm 0.07}$, indicating weaker power degradation than IPB98(y,2) H-mode scaling and a weak density dependence. These results show that boronization can broaden the operational space of EAST I-mode and support the development of reactor-relevant ELM-free scenarios.

Characteristics of grassy ELMs and its impact on the divertor heat flux width

BOUT++ turbulence simulations are conducted for a 60s steady-state long pulse high \{beta}p EAST grassy ELM discharge. BOUT++ linear simulations show that the unstable mode spectrum covers a range of toroidal mode numbers from low-n (n=10~15) peeling-ballooning modes (P-B) to high-n (n=40~80) drift-Alfvén instabilities. Nonlinear simulations show that the ELM crash is trigged by low-n peeling modes and fluctuation is generated at the peak pressure gradient position and radially spread outward into the Scrape-Off-Layer (SOL), even though the drift-Alfvén instabilities dominate the linear growth phase. However, drift-Alfvén turbulence delays the onset of the grassy ELM and enhances the energy loss with the fluctuation extending to pedestal top region. Simulations further show that if the peeling drive is removed, the fluctuation amplitude drops by an order of magnitude and the ELM crashes disappear. The divertor heat flux width is ~2 times larger than the estimates based on the HD model and the ITPA multi-tokamak scaling (or empirical Eich scaling) due to the strong radial turbulence transport.

Influence of Micro-turbulence on Neoclassical Tearing Mode Onset

Direct evidence of micro-turbulence effect on the onset of neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) is reported for the first time in this letter. A puzzling positive correlation between critical width of seed island of NTM and normalized plasma pressure beta_p is first observed employing a novel method for clearly separating the processes of seed island and the onset of NTM in the EAST tokamak. Different from the methods developed before, the width of the seed island is well controlled by slowly ramping up the current in resonant magnetic perturbation coils. It is revealed that the positive correlation is mainly attributed to the enhancement of perpendicular transport by micro-turbulence, which overcomes the destabilizing effect of beta_p on the onset of NTM. Reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) modeling well reproduced the two states of nonlinear bifurcations observed in this experiment by including the finite transport effect. This result provides a new route for understanding multi-scale interaction in plasma physics.

Analysis of Alfven Eigenmode destabilization in DIII-D high poloidal $β$ discharges using a Landau closure model

Alfven Eigenmodes are destabilized at the DIII-D pedestal during transient beta drops in high poloidal beta discharges with internal transport barriers (ITBs), driven by n=1 external kink modes, leading to energetic particle losses. There are two different scenarios in the thermal beta recovery phase: with bifurcation (two instability branches with different frequencies) or without bifurcation (single instability branch). We use the reduced MHD equations in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles as well as the geodesic acoustic wave dynamics, to study the properties of the instabilities observed in the DIII-D high poloidal beta discharges and identify the conditions to trigger the bifurcation. The simulations suggest that instabilities with lower frequency in the bifurcation case are ballooning modes driven at the plasma pedestal, while the instability branch with higher frequencies are low n (n<4) Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes nearby the pedestal. The reverse shear region between the middle and plasma periphery in the non-bifurcated case avoids the excitation of ballooning modes at the pedestal, although Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes and Reverse Shear Alfven Eigenmodes are unstable in the reverse shear region. The n=1 and n=2 Alfven Eigenmode activity can be suppressed or minimized if the neutral beam injector (NBI) intensity is lower than the experimental value (betaf < 0.03). In addition, if the beam energy or neutral beam injector voltage is lower than in the experiment (Vth,f / VA0 < 0.2), the resonance between beam and thermal plasma is weaker. The n=3,4,5 and 6 AE activity can't be fully suppressed, although the growth rate and frequency is smaller for an optimized neutral beam injector operation regime. In conclusion, AE activity in high poloidal beta discharges can be minimized for optimized NBI operation regimes.
