Deuteron-equivalent and phase-equivalent interactions within light nuclei

Background: Phase-equivalent transformations (PETs) are well-known in quantum scattering and inverse scattering theory. PETs do not affect scattering phase shifts and bound state energies of two-body system but are conventionally supposed to modify two-body bound state observables such as the rms radius and electromagnetic moments. Purpose: In order to preserve all bound state observables, we propose a new particular case of PETs, a deuteron-equivalent transformation (DET-PET), which leaves unchanged not only scattering phase shifts and bound state (deuteron) binding energy but also the bound state wave function. Methods: The construction of DET-PET is discussed; equations defining the simplest DET-PETs are derived. We apply these simplest DET-PETs to the JISP16 $NN$ interaction and use the transformed $NN$ interactions in calculations of $^3$H and $^4$He binding energies in the No-core Full Configuration (NCFC) approach based on extrapolations of the No-core Shell Model (NCSM) basis space results to the infinite basis space. Results: We demonstrate the DET-PET modification of the $np$ scattering wave functions and study the DET-PET manifestation in the binding energies of $^3$H and $^4$He nuclei and their correlation (Tjon line). Conclusions: It is shown that some DET-PETs generate modifications of the central component while the others modify the tensor component of the $NN$ interaction. DET-PETs are able to modify significantly the $np$ scattering wave functions and hence the off-shell properties of the $NN$ interaction. DET-PETs give rise to significant changes in the binding energies of $^3$H (in the range of approximately 1.5 MeV) and $^4$He (in the range of more than 9 MeV) and are able to modify the correlation patterns of binding energies of these nuclei.

Testing the density matrix expansion against ab initio calculations of trapped neutron drops

Microscopic input to a universal nuclear energy density functional can be provided through the density matrix expansion (DME), which has recently been revived and improved. Several DME implementation strategies are tested for neutron drop systems in harmonic traps by comparing to Hartree-Fock (HF) and ab initio no-core full configuration (NCFC) calculations with a model interaction (Minnesota potential). The new DME with exact treatment of Hartree contributions is found to best reproduce HF results and supplementing the functional with fit Skyrme-like contact terms shows systematic improvement toward the full NCFC results.

Electron in a transverse harmonic cavity

We employ Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory in a basis function approach to solve the non-perturbative problem of an electron in a strong scalar transverse confining potential. We evaluate both the invariant mass spectra and the anomalous magnetic moment of the lowest state for this two-scale system. The weak external field limit of the anomalous magnetic moment agrees with the result of QED perturbation theory within the anticipated accuracy.

Origin of the anomalous long lifetime of 14C

We report the microscopic origins of the anomalously suppressed beta decay of 14C to 14N using the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) with the Hamiltonian from chiral effective field theory (EFT) including three-nucleon force (3NF) terms. The 3NF induces unexpectedly large cancellations within the p-shell between contributions to beta decay, which reduce the traditionally large contributions from the NN interactions by an order of magnitude, leading to the long lifetime of 14C.

Challenges for Modeling Nuclear Structure: Are the Proton and Neutron Masses and A-body Interactions Relevant?

We discuss some of the challenges that future nuclear modeling may face in order to improve the description of the nuclear structure. One challenge is related to the need for A-body nuclear interactions justified by various contemporary nuclear physics studies. Another challenge is related to the discrepancy in the NNN contact interaction parameters for 3He and 3H that suggests the need for accurate proton and neutron masses in the future precision calculations. New development of realistic J-matrix inverse scattering NN interaction and ab initio description of light nuclei

We discuss the studies of light nuclei in ab initio No-core Full Configuration approach based on extrapolations to the infinite model space of large-scale No-core Shell Model calculations on supercomputers. The convergence at the end of p shell and beginning of the sd shell can be achieved if only reasonable soft enough NN interactions are used. In particular, good predictions are obtained with a realistic JISP16 NN interaction obtained in J-matrix inverse scattering approach and fitted to reproduce light nuclei observables without three-nucleon forces. We discuss the current status of this NN interaction and its recent development.

No-core shell model for A = 47 and A = 49

We apply the no-core shell model to the nuclear structure of odd-mass nuclei straddling $^{48}$Ca. Starting with the NN interaction, that fits two-body scattering and bound state data we evaluate the nuclear properties of $A = 47$ and $A = 49$ nuclei while preserving all the underlying symmetries. Due to model space limitations and the absence of 3-body interactions, we incorporate phenomenological interaction terms determined by fits to $A = 48$ nuclei in a previous effort. Our modified Hamiltonian produces reasonable spectra for these odd mass nuclei. In addition to the differences in single-particle basis states, the absence of a single-particle Hamiltonian in our no-core approach complicates comparisons with valence effective NN interactions. We focus on purely off-diagonal two-body matrix elements since they are not affected by ambiguities in the different roles for one-body potentials and we compare selected sets of $fp$-shell matrix elements of our initial and modified Hamiltonians in the harmonic oscillator basis with those of a recent model $fp$-shell interaction, the GXPF1 interaction of Honma, Otsuka, Brown and Mizusaki. While some significant differences emerge from these comparisons, there is an overall reasonably good correlation between our off-diagonal matrix elements and those of GXPF1.

Ab initio nuclear structure simulations: the speculative $^{14}$F nucleus

We present results from ab initio No-Core Full Configuration simulations of the exotic proton-rich nucleus $^{14}$F whose first experimental observation is expected soon. The calculations with JISP16 NN interaction are performed up to the $N_{\max}=8$ basis space. The binding energy is evaluated using an extrapolation technique. This technique is generalized to excitation energies, verified in calculations of $^6$Li and applied to $^{14}$B, the $^{14}$F mirror, for which some data are available.

Hamiltonian light-front field theory in a basis function approach

Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory constitutes a framework for the non-perturbative solution of invariant masses and correlated parton amplitudes of self-bound systems. By choosing the light-front gauge and adopting a basis function representation, we obtain a large, sparse, Hamiltonian matrix for mass eigenstates of gauge theories that is solvable by adapting the ab initio no-core methods of nuclear many-body theory. Full covariance is recovered in the continuum limit, the infinite matrix limit. There is considerable freedom in the choice of the orthonormal and complete set of basis functions with convenience and convergence rates providing key considerations. Here, we use a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator basis for transverse modes that corresponds with eigensolutions of the soft-wall AdS/QCD model obtained from light-front holography. We outline our approach and present illustrative features of some non-interacting systems in a cavity. We illustrate the first steps towards solving QED by obtaining the mass eigenstates of an electron in a cavity in small basis spaces and discuss the computational challenges.

NN Interaction JISP16: Current Status and Prospect

We discuss realistic nonlocal NN interactions of a new type - J-matrix Inverse Scattering Potential (JISP). In an ab exitu approach, these interactions are fitted to not only two-nucleon data (NN scattering data and deuteron properties) but also to the properties of light nuclei without referring to three-nucleon forces. We discuss recent progress with the ab initio No-core Shell Model (NCSM) approach and respective progress in developing ab exitu JISP-type NN-interactions together with plans of their forthcoming improvements.

Hamiltonian light-front field theory within an AdS/QCD basis

Non-perturbative Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory presents opportunities and challenges that bridge particle physics and nuclear physics. Fundamental theories, such as Quantum Chromodynmamics (QCD) and Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) offer the promise of great predictive power spanning phenomena on all scales from the microscopic to cosmic scales, but new tools that do not rely exclusively on perturbation theory are required to make connection from one scale to the next. We outline recent theoretical and computational progress to build these bridges and provide illustrative results for nuclear structure and quantum field theory. As our framework we choose light-front gauge and a basis function representation with two-dimensional harmonic oscillator basis for transverse modes that corresponds with eigensolutions of the soft-wall AdS/QCD model obtained from light-front holography.

Effective operators from exact many-body renormalization

We construct effective two-body Hamiltonians and E2 operators for the p-shell by performing $16\hbarΩ$ ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations for A=5 and A=6 nuclei and explicitly projecting the many-body Hamiltonians and E2 operator onto the $0\hbarΩ$ space. We then separate the effective E2 operator into one-body and two-body contributions employing the two-body valence cluster approximation. We analyze the convergence of proton and neutron valence one-body contributions with increasing model space size and explore the role of valence two-body contributions. We show that the constructed effective E2 operator can be parametrized in terms of one-body effective charges giving a good estimate of the NCSM result for heavier p-shell nuclei.

No-core shell model for 48-Ca, 48-Sc and 48-Ti

We report the first no-core shell model results for $^{48}Ca$, $^{48}Sc$ and $^{48}Ti$ with derived and modified two-body Hamiltonians. We use an oscillator basis with a limited $\hbarΩ$ range around $45/A^{1/3}-25/A^{2/3} = 10.5 MeV$ and a limited model space up to $1\hbarΩ$. No single-particle energies are used. We find that the charge dependence of the bulk binding energy of eight A=48 nuclei is reasonably described with an effective Hamiltonian derived from the CD-Bonn interaction while there is an overall underbinding by about 0.4 MeV/nucleon. However, the resulting spectra exhibit deficiencies that are anticipated due to: (1) basis space limitations and/or the absence of effective many-body interactions; and, (2) the absence of genuine three-nucleon interactions. We then introduce additive isospin-dependent central terms plus a tensor force to our Hamiltonian and achieve accurate binding energies and reasonable spectra for all three nuclei. The resulting no-core shell model opens a path for applications to the double-beta ($ββ$) decay process.

Ab initio no-core full configuration calculations of light nuclei

We perform no-core full configuration calculations for a set of light nuclei including $^{16}$O with a realistic NN interaction, JISP16. We obtain ground state energies and their uncertainties through exponential extrapolations that we demonstrate are reliable in $^2$H, $^3$H and $^4$He test cases where fully converged results are obtained directly. We find that $^6$He, $^6$Li and $^8$He are underbound by about 600 keV, 560 keV and 1.7 MeV, respectively. $^{12}$C is overbound by about 1.7 MeV and $^{16}$O is overbound by about 16 MeV. The first excited $0^+$ states in $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O are also evaluated but their uncertainties are significantly larger than the uncertainties for the ground states.

Full Configuration Study of Light No-Core Nuclei with Novel Realistic NN Interaction JISP16

We introduce the no-core full configuration (NCFC) approach and present results for $^4$He, $^{12}$C and $^{14}$F with the realistic NN interaction, JISP16. We obtain ground state energies and their uncertainties through exponential extrapolations that we demonstrate are reliable in $^4$He where fully converged results are obtained. We find $^{12}$C is overbound by 1.7 MeV and we predict the yet-to-be-measured binding energy of $^{14}$F to be $70.2\pm 3.5$ MeV. The extrapolated spectrum of $^{14}$F is in reasonable agreement with known features of the $^{14}$B spectrum.
