Witnessing pre-processing at intermediate redshift: observational evidence of infalling groups onto a merging galaxy cluster

The fraction of quenched galaxies increases with local density, and part of this trend is thought to arise in groups before cluster accretion (pre-processing). In merging clusters, this is difficult to separate from star formation triggered or suppressed by the cluster merger itself. We investigate whether five high-velocity galaxies in the merging cluster SPT-CL~J0307-6225 ($z=0.579$), distributed in two candidate infalling groups, show signs of group-scale environmental processing prior to accretion. We combine MUSE integral-field spectroscopy and HST imaging to derive [\ion{O}{ii}] kinematic maps, spectral classes, and star-formation rates (SFR), to understand the properties of the galaxies. We further use the Magneticum simulations and the phase-space information to determine if these galaxies are part of two groups, and if they will be accreted onto the merging cluster. Group~1 is a morphologically disturbed interacting pair bound to the cluster, with at least one galaxy classified as dusty starburst. Group~2 is a compact triplet at $\sim$4$σ_v$ from the cluster, in which two galaxies share a common [\ion{O}{ii}] envelope and the dominant member, an e(b) starburst, shows an elevated ionised-gas velocity dispersion. The SFR of both starburst galaxies lie within the scatter of the field star-forming main sequence, as expected for modest, interaction-triggered bursts. Close pairs at the phase-space position of group~2 occur for $\sim$1\% of comparable-mass cluster galaxies in Magneticum, so it is not unlikely for the group to be bound. Both groups show spatially resolved signatures of galaxy--galaxy interactions alongside ongoing star formation, supporting a pre-processing scenario in the environment of a merging cluster. Such group-scale interactions may contribute to the enhanced star formation reported in merging clusters.

A new $H_0$ measurement with SNe Requiem and Encore using $\texttt{Gravity.jl}$

We present a strong-lensing (SL) analysis of the galaxy cluster MACS J0138.0-2155 (z=0.336), the first known lens cluster discovered to host two distinct multiply imaged Type Ia supernovae (SNe): SN Requiem and SN Encore. Both SNe are located in the massive, multiply imaged red galaxy MRG-M0138 at z=1.949. The projected total mass of this cluster has been investigated with several independent lens models (Suyu+26; Pierel+26), using a sample of 23 spectroscopically confirmed multiple images from 8 background sources (0.767 10%). The forthcoming reappearance of SN Requiem offers an immediate opportunity to significantly improve constraints on H0, provided that lens-model systematics are controlled. These results establish M0138 as a premier anchor for high-precision cluster TDC.

JWST NIRSpec+MIRI Observations of the nearby Type IIP supernova 2022acko

We present JWST spectral and photometric observations of the Type IIP supernova (SN) 2022acko at ~50 days past explosion. These data are the first JWST spectral observations of a core-collapse SN. We identify ~30 different H I features, other features associated with products produced from the CNO cycle, and s-process elements such as Sc II and Ba II. By combining the JWST spectra with ground-based optical and NIR spectra, we construct a full Spectral Energy Distribution from 0.4 to 25 microns and find that the JWST spectra are fully consistent with the simultaneous JWST photometry. The data lack signatures of CO formation and we estimate a limit on the CO mass of < 10^{-8} solar mass. We demonstrate how the CO fundamental band limits can be used to probe underlying physics during stellar evolution, explosion, and the environment. The observations indicate little mixing between the H envelope and C/O core in the ejecta and show no evidence of dust. The data presented here set a critical baseline for future JWST observations, where possible molecular and dust formation may be seen.

A Reference Survey for Supernova Cosmology with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope

This note presents an initial survey design for the Nancy Grace Roman High-latitude Time Domain Survey. This is not meant to be a final or exhaustive list of all the survey strategy choices, but instead presents a viable path towards achieving the desired precision and accuracy of dark energy measurements using Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We describe a survey strategy that use six filters (RZYJH and F) and the prism on the Roman Wide Field Instrument. This survey has two tiers, one "wide" which targets SNe Ia at redshifts up to 1 and one "deep" targeting redshifts up to 1.7; for each, four filters are used (with Y and J used in both tiers). We propose one field each in the north and south continuous viewing zones, and expect to obtain high-quality distances of $\sim$12,000 SNe Ia with $\sim$5,000 at z > 1. We propose a wide-tier area of $\sim$19 deg$^2$ and a deep tier of $\sim$5 deg$^2$. Exposure times range from 100 s to 900 s for imaging and 900 s to 3600 s for the prism. These exposure times would reach $\sim$25.5 mag and $\sim$26.5 mag for the wide and deep tiers respectively, with deep co-add stacks reaching $\sim$28 mag and $\sim$29 mag. The total survey spans two years, with a total allocation time of six months, and a cadence of $\sim$5 days.
