Large pion pole in Z_{S}^{MOM}/Z_{P}^{MOM} from Wilson action data

We show that, contrarily to recent claims, data from the Wilson (unimproved) fermionic action at three different beta values demonstrate the presence of a large Goldstone boson contribution in the quark pseudoscalar vertex, quantitatively close to our previous estimate based on the SW action with c_{SW}=1.769. We show that discretisation errors on Z_{S}^{MOM}/Z_{P}^{MOM} seem to be much smaller than the Goldstone pole contribution over a very large range of momenta. The subtraction of this non perturbative contribution leads to numbers close to one-loop BPT.

Does F2 need a hard pomeron?

We show that the latest HERA measurements of F2 are compatible with the existence of a triple pole at J=1. Such a structure also accounts for soft forward hadronic amplitudes, so that the introduction of a new singularity is not necessary to describe DIS data.

High-Energy Forward Scattering and the Pomeron: Simple Pole versus Unitarized Models

Using the largest data set available, we determine the best values that the data at t=0 (total cross sections and real parts of the hadronic amplitudes) give for the intercepts and couplings of the soft pomeron and of the rho/omega and a/f trajectories. We show that these data cannot discriminate between a simple-pole fit and asymptotic log square s and log s fits, and hence are not sufficient to reveal the ultimate nature of the pomeron. However, we evaluate the existing evidence (factorization, universality, quark counting) favouring the simple-pole hypothesis. We also examine the range of validity in energy of the fits, and show that one cannot rely on such fits in the region sqrt(s)<9 GeV. We also establish bounds on the odderon and the hard pomeron.

The Transverse Cross Section in Exclusive Vector-Meson Production

We show that the ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal cross sections observed at HERA cannot be reproduced by models which assume that the meson can be described by an on-shell q qbar pair. We explain how a simple model allowing off-shell (anti)quarks can naturally lead to agreement with experiment.

Pseudoscalar Vertex, Goldstone Boson and Quark Masses on the Lattice

We analyse the Structure Function collaboration data on the quark pseudoscalar vertex and extract the Goldstone boson pole contribution, in 1/p2. The strength of the pole is found to be quite large at presently accessible scales. We draw the important consequences of this finding for the various definitions of quark masses, and point out potential problems with the operator product expansion.

Soft Pomeron and Lower-Trajectory Intercepts

We present a preliminary report on the determination of the intercepts and couplings of the soft pomeron and of the rho/omega and f/a trajectories from the largest data set available for all total cross sections and real parts of the hadronic amplitudes. Factorization is reasonably satisfied by the pomeron couplings, which allows us to make predictions on gamma gamma and gamma p total cross sections. In addition we show that these data cannot discriminate between fits based on a simple Regge pomeron-pole and on an asymptotic log^2s-type behaviour, implying that the effect of unitarisation is negligible. Also we examine the range of validity in energy of the fit, and the bounds that these data place on the odderon and on the hard pomeron.

Fermi Motion and Quark Off-Shellness in Elastic Vector-Meson Production

We study ways of implementing Fermi momentum in elastic vector-meson production, and find that the usual on-shell assumption of quark models and quark wave functions cannot reproduce the ratio of the longitudinal cross section to the transverse one. We propose a new approach which allows the quarks to be off-shell, and which naturally reproduces the data. As a consequence, we prove that the asymptotic form of the transverse cross section is different from 1/Q^8. In this new model, we show that the mass, t and Q2 dependence of the cross sections are also reproduced. We also make predictions concerning the production of excited states such as the rho' and the psi'.

Soft Pomeron Intercept

We show that simple Regge pole fits to the imaginary and the real part of the elastic amplitude in pp and pbar p collisions give a value of 1.096+0.012-0.009 for the pomeron intercept. Preliminary results of the new global fits to all hadron total cross sections as well as to the proton structure function at low x and low Q2 are briefly mentioned.

Vector Meson Production at HERA

We show that the lowest-order QCD calculation in a simple model of elastic vector-meson production does reproduce correctly the ratios of cross sections for rho, phi and J/psi, both in photoproduction and in high-Q2 quasi-elastic scattering. The dependence of the slopes on the mass of the vector meson is reproduced as well. We examine the lower-energy data, and find that the energy dependence of the cross section does not depend on Q2, but may depend on the vector-meson mass.

Bounds on the Soft Pomeron Intercept

The Donnachie-Landshoff fit of total cross sections has now become a standard reference for models of total, elastic and diffractive cross-sections. Adopting their philosophy that simple-pole exchanges should account for all data to present energies, we assess the uncertainties on their fits. Our best estimate for the pomeron intercept is $1.096^{+0.012}_{-0.009}$, but several models have a good chi square for intercepts in the range [1.07,1.11].

A Review of the Soft Pomeron

Soft pomeron fits reproduce all zero-Q2 data for light quarks, but run into problems at HERA for heavy mesons and for high Q2, and at the Tevatron for W diffractive production. I review the basic properties of the soft pomeron, and outline the possibilities which have been considered to account for the new data.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking From Dyson-Schwinger Equations

I report on recent progress in the study of mass generation in non-abelian gauge theories, and concentrate on the origin of constituent masses in QCD. I argue that a consistent formalism has been developed to describe chiral symmetry breaking via multiplicatively renormalisable Dyson-Schwinger equations. Its main consequence is the existence of a critical value of the coupling beyond which massless solutions do not exist.

The Quark Propagator from the Dyson-Schwinger Equations: I. the Chiral Solution

Within the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the axial gauge, we study the effect that non-perturbative glue has on the quark propagator. We show that Ward-Takahashi identities, combined with the requirement of matching perturbative QCD at high momentum transfer, guarantee the multiplicative renormalisability of the answer. Technically, the matching with perturbation theory is accomplished by the introduction of a transverse part to the quark-gluon vertex. We show that this transverse vertex is crucial for chiral symmetry breaking, and that massless solutions exist below a critical value of the strong coupling constant. Using the gluon propagator that we previously calculated, we obtain small corrections to the quark propagator, which keeps a pole at the origin in the chiral phase.

The Donnachie-Landshoff Pomeron vs. QCD

The Donnachie-Landshoff model of diffractive scattering, which accounts for all confirmed diffractive data, is briefly reviewed. The picture emerging from this model is shown to directly contradict that coming from perturbative leading-log s calculations. The inclusion of non-perturbative effects brings the two pictures in closer agreement.

A Consistent Next-to-Leading-Order QCD Calculation of Hadronic Diffractive Scattering

We calculate the order alpha_s^2 and order alpha_s^3 QCD contributions to colour-singlet exchange in the leading log s approximation. We implement the resulting amplitude at the hadronic level and thus construct the QCD pomeron and odderon to this order of perturbation theory. We show that the structure of the hadronic form factors provides a natural mechanism through which the odderon gets suppressed at t=0 whereas it dominates the elastic cross section at large t. We also demonstrate that the inclusion of nonperturbative effects through a modification of the gluon propagator accelerates greatly the convergence of the log s expansion, although not enough to provide agreement with the data.

Can perturbative QCD predict a substantial part of diffractive LHC/SSC physics?

We examine a model of hadronic diffractive scattering which interpolates between perturbative QCD and non-perturbative fits. We restrict the perturbative QCD resummation to the large transverse momentum region, and use a simple Regge-pole parametrization in the infrared region. This picture allows us to account for existing data, and to estimate the size of the perturbative contribution to future diffractive measurements. At LHC and SSC energies, we find that a cut-off BFKL equation can lead to a measurable perturbative component in traditionally soft processes. In particular, we show that the total pp cross section could become as large as 228 mb (160 mb) and the rho parameter as large as 0.23 (0.24) at the SSC (LHC).

Perturbative QCD Corrections to the Soft Pomeron

We study the interface between soft and hard QCD at high energy and small momentum transfer. At LHC and SSC energies, we find that a cutoff BFKL equation leads one to expect a measurable perturbative component in traditionally soft processes. We show that the total cross section could become as large as 175 mb (122 mb) and the rho parameter 0.40 (0.25) at the SSC (LHC).
