Recent Experiments with Bose-Condensed Gases at JILA

We consider a binary mixture of two overlapping Bose-Einstein condensates in two different hyperfine states of \Rb87 with nearly identical magnetic moments. Such a system has been simply realized through application of radiofrequency and microwave radiation which drives a two-photon transition between the two states. The nearly identical magnetic moments afford a high degree of spatial overlap, permitting a variety of new experiments. We discuss some of the conditions under which the magnetic moments are identical, with particular emphasis placed on the requirements for a time-averaged orbiting potential (TOP) magnetic trap.

Dynamical response of a Bose-Einstein condensate to a discontinuous change in internal state

A two-photon transition is used to convert an arbitrary fraction of the 87Rb atoms in a |F=1,m_f=-1> condensate to the |F=2,m_f=1> state. Transferring the entire population imposes a discontinuous change on the condensate's mean-field repulsion, which leaves a residual ringing in the condensate width. A calculation based on Gross-Pitaevskii theory agrees well with the observed behavior, and from the comparison we obtain the ratio of the intraspecies scattering lengths for the two states, a_|1,-1> / a_|2,1> = 1.062(12).

The dynamics of component separation in a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates

We present studies of the time-evolution of a two-component system of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in the |F=1, mf=-1> and |2,1> spin states of Rb-87. The two condensates are created with a well-defined relative phase and complete spatial overlap. In subsequent evolution they undergo complex relative motions which tend to preserve the total density profile. the motions quickly damp out, leaving the condensates in a steady state with a nonnegligible (and adjustable) overlap region.
