A dynamical model for longitudinal wave functions in light-front holographic QCD

We construct a Schrodinger-like equation for the longitudinal wave function of a meson in the valence qq-bar sector, based on the 't Hooft model for large-N two-dimensional QCD, and combine this with the usual transverse equation from light-front holographic QCD, to obtain a model for mesons with massive quarks. The computed wave functions are compared with the wave function ansatz of Brodsky and De Teramond and used to compute decay constants and parton distribution functions. The basis functions used to solve the longitudinal equation may be useful for more general calculations of meson states in QCD.

A nonperturbative coupled-cluster method for quantum field theories

The nonperturbative Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem for bound states of a quantum field theory is formulated in terms of Dirac's light-front coordinates and then approximated by the exponential-operator technique of the many-body coupled-cluster method. This approximation eliminates any need for the usual approximation of Fock-space truncation. Instead, the exponentiated operator is truncated, and the terms retained are determined by a set of nonlinear integral equations. These equations are solved simultaneously with an effective eigenvalue problem in the valence sector, where the number of constituents is small. Matrix elements can be calculated, with extensions of techniques from many-body coupled-cluster theory, to obtain form factors and other observables.

An application of the light-front coupled-cluster method to the nonperturbative solution of QED

The new light-front coupled-cluster (LFCC) method for the nonperturbative solution of Hamiltonian eigenvalue problems is described and then illustrated in an application to quantum electrodynamics. The method eliminates any necessity for a Fock-space truncation and thereby avoids complications associated with such a truncation. An LFCC calculation of the electron's anomalous magnetic moment is formulated for a truncation that, for simplicity, excludes positrons but keeps arbitrarily many photons.

A light-front coupled-cluster method for the nonperturbative solution of quantum field theories

We propose a new method for the nonperturbative solution of quantum field theories and illustrate its use in the context of a light-front analog to the Greenberg--Schweber model. The method is based on light-front quantization and uses the exponential-operator technique of the many-body coupled-cluster method. The formulation produces an effective Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem in the valence Fock sector of the system of interest, combined with nonlinear integral equations to be solved for the functions that define the effective Hamiltonian. The method avoids the Fock-space truncations usually used in nonperturbative light-front Hamiltonian methods and, therefore, does not suffer from the spectator dependence, Fock-sector dependence, and uncanceled divergences caused by such truncations.

A light-front coupled cluster method

A new method for the nonperturbative solution of quantum field theories is described. The method adapts the exponential-operator technique of the standard many-body coupled-cluster method to the Fock-space eigenvalue problem for light-front Hamiltonians. This leads to an effective eigenvalue problem in the valence Fock sector and a set of nonlinear integral equations for the functions that define the exponential operator. The approach avoids at least some of the difficulties associated with the Fock-space truncation usually used.

Application of a light-front coupled cluster method

As a test of the new light-front coupled-cluster method in a gauge theory, we apply it to the nonperturbative construction of the dressed-electron state in QED, for an arbitrary covariant gauge, and compute the electron's anomalous magnetic moment. The construction illustrates the spectator and Fock-sector independence of vertex and self-energy contributions and indicates resolution of the difficulties with uncanceled divergences that plague methods based on Fock-space truncation.

A first nonperturbative calculation in light-front QED for an arbitrary covariant gauge

This work is the first check of gauge invariance for nonperturbative calculations in light-front QED. To quantize QED in an arbitrary covariant gauge, we use a light-front analog of the equal-time Stueckelberg quantization. Combined with a Pauli-Villars regularization, where massive, negative-metric photons and fermions are included in the Lagrangian, we are then able to construct the light-front QED Hamiltonian and the associated mass eigenvalue problem in a Fock-space representation. The formalism is applied to the dressed-electron state, with a Fock-space truncation to include at most one photon. From this eigenstate, we compute the anomalous magnetic moment. The result is found to be gauge independent, to an order in $α$ consistent with the truncation.

Pauli-Villars regularization of field theories on the light front

Four-dimensional quantum field theories generally require regularization to be well defined. This can be done in various ways, but here we focus on Pauli--Villars (PV) regularization and apply it to nonperturbative calculations of bound states. The philosophy is to introduce enough PV fields to the Lagrangian to regulate the theory perturbatively, including preservation of symmetries, and assume that this is sufficient for the nonperturbative case. The numerical methods usually necessary for nonperturbative bound-state problems are then applied to a finite theory that has the original symmetries. The bound-state problem is formulated as a mass eigenvalue problem in terms of the light-front Hamiltonian. Applications to quantum electrodynamics are discussed.

A nonperturbative calculation of the electron's magnetic moment with truncation extended to two photons

The Pauli--Villars (PV) regularization scheme is applied to a calculation of the dressed-electron state and its anomalous magnetic moment in light-front-quantized quantum electrodynamics (QED) in Feynman gauge. The regularization is provided by heavy, negative-metric fields added to the Lagrangian. The light-front QED Hamiltonian then leads to a well-defined eigenvalue problem for the dressed-electron state expressed as a Fock-state expansion. The Fock-state wave functions satisfy coupled integral equations that come from this eigenproblem. A finite system of equations is obtained by truncation to no more than two photons and no positrons; this extends earlier work that was limited to dressing by a single photon. Numerical techniques are applied to solve the coupled system and compute the anomalous moment, for which we obtain agreement with experiment, within numerical errors, but observe a small systematic discrepancy that should be due to the absence of electron-positron loops and of three-photon self-energy effects. We also discuss the prospects for application of the method to quantum chromodynamics.

Nonperturbative Pauli-Villars regularization of vacuum polarization in light-front QED

We continue the development of a nonperturbative light-front Hamiltonian method for the solution of quantum field theories by considering the one-photon eigenstate of Lorentz-gauge QED. The photon state is computed nonperturbatively for a Fock basis with a bare photon state and electron-positron pair states. The calculation is regulated by the inclusion of Pauli-Villars (PV) fermions, with one flavor to make the integrals finite and a second flavor to guarantee a zero mass for the physical photon eigenstate. We compute in detail the constraints on the PV coupling strengths that this zero mass implies. As part of this analysis, we provide the complete Lorentz-gauge light-front QED Hamiltonian with two PV fermion flavors and two PV photon flavors, which will be useful for future work. The need for two PV photons was established previously; the need for two PV fermions is established here.

On the nonperturbative solution of Pauli--Villars-regulated light-front QED: A comparison of the sector-dependent and standard parameterizations

We consider quantum electrodynamics quantized on the light front in Feynman gauge and regulated in the ultraviolet by the inclusion of massive, negative-metric Pauli--Villars (PV) particles in the Lagrangian. The eigenstate of the electron is approximated by a Fock-state expansion truncated to include one photon. The Fock-state wave functions are computed from the fundamental Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem and used to calculate the anomalous magnetic moment, as a point of comparison. Two approaches are considered: a sector-dependent parameterization, where the bare parameters of the Lagrangian are allowed to depend on the Fock sectors between which the particular Hamiltonian term acts, and the standard choice, where the bare parameters are the same for all sectors. Both methods are shown to require some care with respect to ultraviolet divergences; neither method can allow all PV masses to be taken to infinity. In addition, the sector-dependent approach suffers from an infrared divergence that requires a nonzero photon mass; due to complications associated with this divergence, the standard parameterization is to be preferred. We also show that the self-energy effects obtained from a two-photon truncation are enough to bring the standard-parameterization result for the anomalous moment into agreement with experiment within numerical errors. This continues the development of a method for the nonperturbative solution of strongly coupled theories, in particular quantum chromodynamics.

Zero momentum modes in discrete light-cone quantization

We consider the constrained zero modes found in the application of discrete light-cone quantization (DLCQ) to the nonperturbative solution of quantum field theories. These modes are usually neglected for simplicity, but we show that their inclusion can be relatively straightforward, and, what is more, that they are useful for nonperturbative calculations of field-theoretic spectra. In particular, inclusion of zero modes improves the convergence of the numerical calculation and makes possible the direct calculation of vacuum expectation values, even when the zero modes are determined dynamically. We also comment on zero-mode contributions not included by DLCQ, namely zero-mode loops.

Supersymmetric Two-Dimensional QCD at Finite Temperature

Light-cone coordinates and supersymmetric discrete light-cone quantization are used to analyze the thermodynamics of two-dimensional supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics with a Chern-Simons term in the large-N_c approximation. This requires estimation of the entire spectrum of the theory, which is done with a new algorithm based on Lanczos iterations. Although this work is still in progress, some preliminary results are presented.

Numerical evidence for the Maldacena conjecture in two-dimensional N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory

The N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory in 1+1 dimensions is solved at strong coupling to directly confirm the predictions of supergravity at weak coupling. The calculations are done in the large-N_c approximation using Supersymmetric Discrete Light-Cone Quantization. The stress-energy correlator is obtained as a function of the separation r; for intermediate values of r, the correlator behaves in a manner consistent with the 1/r^5 behavior predicted by weak-coupling supergravity.

Two-boson truncation of Pauli-Villars-regulated Yukawa theory

We apply light-front quantization, Pauli-Villars regularization, and numerical techniques to the nonperturbative solution of the dressed-fermion problem in Yukawa theory in 3+1 dimensions. The solution is developed as a Fock-state expansion truncated to include at most one fermion and two bosons. The basis includes a negative-metric heavy boson and a negative-metric heavy fermion in order to provide the necessary cancellations of ultraviolet divergences. The integral equations for the Fock-state wave functions are solved by reducing them to effective one-boson--one-fermion equations for eigenstates with J_z=1/2. The equations are converted to a matrix equation with a specially tuned quadrature scheme, and the lowest mass state is obtained by diagonalization. Various properties of the dressed-fermion state are then computed from the nonperturbative light-front wave functions. This work is a major step in our development of Pauli-Villars regularization for the nonperturbative solution of four-dimensional field theories and represents a significant advance in the numerical accuracy of such solutions.

Constraints on proton structure from precision atomic physics measurements

Ground-state hyperfine splittings in hydrogen and muonium are very well measured. Their difference, after correcting for magnetic moment and reduced mass effects, is due solely to proton structure--the large QED contributions for a pointlike nucleus essentially cancel. The rescaled hyperfine difference depends on the Zemach radius, a fundamental measure of the proton, computed as an integral over a product of electric and magnetic proton form factors. The determination of the Zemach radius, (1.043 +/- 0.016) fm, from atomic physics tightly constrains fits to accelerator measurements of proton form factors. Conversely, we can use muonium data to extract an ``experimental'' value for QED corrections to hydrogenic hyperfine data; we find that measurement and theory are consistent.
